The reason i do triple doran's generally, is that my first back on a champ like lulu (main one i can think of that i do the triple dorans) is generally around the 1k gold mark, and i find that i need the mana regen but want to keep on the offensive so like to pick up triple dorans for that reason, it gives me a semi decent power spike while keeping me in lane a lot more, the only problem being of course the clogged item slots when i get close to the 4-6k gold mark of the game.
The only other way i can think of doing it is going double doran's and getting an amp tome but given the aggression i tend to play (and the mana i tend to use during these trades) i feel like i'd be lacking in the mana regen department.

Then spend less mana? I would definitely go double Doran's and then build Athene's / Morello on non-support Lulu... all the mana regen you need right there if you can manage it well.
EDIT: Why is Morellonomicon not a more core pick in general? I feel like it's a super awesome item (EDIT AGAIN: 135% Gold efficient ... WHAT) even without the passive and I get it even over DFG sometimes on my APCs. How wrong am I?
Morello's is a decent item but a large part of the value of it is the passive, so you gotta make sure you can get actual value out of that (facing high-heal champs a la mundo / zac) - otherwise, you can get a different item such as athene's which fills the mana regen slot and gives slightly better stats. At least, imo
Also, I can't see how you'd have any issues with mana on double doran's. If you really have mana issues on that level and aren't getting blues, buy a couple of mana pots.
Personally my lulu tends to be focused on the quick 2-3 second trades that you can get off (using her W as a polymorph) and in doing so requires her whole combo to go out, i could use less mana but that kinda hinders the trading potential, and the lane pressure it creates.
I also don't really want to delay the build, with a mana based item.
General build: Triple dorans > Nashor's > Pen Boots > Zhonya's/Abyssal/Rabadon's (the order of these 3 changes quite often)
P-EDIT: i guess i could get mana pots, and yeah blues tend to be rare in lower elo's.

People build Nashor's on Lulu? I build her full AP.
PEDIT: Glad to see my knee-jerk "WTF" wasn't wrong there.
@Ray: I don't feel as mana-pressured on Lulu or most APCs, at least not to the point that Jason does, but I too favor a more aggressive playstyle. With that in mind, I would see Morello as more "glass cannon"-y than Athene's. It does fill the mana regen slot (well enough for my needs) but gives better AP, some needed CDR, and a great passive. Am I wrong in assuming it has value versus any champs with high-healing ITEMS as well as abilities? Yes it's a straight-up counter to Aatrox / Garen / Mundo / Sion / Zac et. al., but when you see (for example) so many ADCs (erroneously) rushing Bloodthirster, why not pick up Morello to deal more damage up front and hit them where it hurts? Their
itemization
is important to your build, not just their kit, right?
You'd be correct in thinking that morello's helps into them, there's nothing particularly wrong with the item. It's, as you said, the more offensively oriented item choice.
I do feel that athene's is far far better mana sustain in a teamfighting situation, though. The mregen on morello's works over time, but in a teamfight you're burning mana hard and fast to do the things, and the atheen's passive is burst mana sustain which vastly outperforms morello's.
But overall I'd say you aren't particularly wrong, maestro
