Twilight Five

Balthazar spent much of the day lazing around the small yard out behind the Walker residence. He chased a squirrel and nibbled at some fruit which dropped from an overhanging bough from the neighbor's yard. Some time in the afternoon he noted the scent of burning custard. Racing into the bakery he noticed the pastries arrayed along the counter and an éclair burning in the oven. Balthazar learned long ago that the oven was not to be trifled with. The front door opened with the chime of a bell, and the pup raced into the room to be fawned upon by the girls, returned home from school. A bit of puppy love was well worth the afternoon in the sun. Even if that squirrel did taunt him all morning.
