The difficulty of this dungeon is about comparable to the abandoned monastery dungeon from the start of the last campaign.

Of course, you guys chopped through this one much easier since you guys had a much stronger team composition.

Yo guys I was talking to FakeGod about maybe dipping two ranger levels to make me more competent in combat. Anyway long story short, FG has very kindly given me the option to re-jig my char sheet and take those two levels now instead of the two cleric levels I'd filled in. Benefits of this are:
I can make Lukas a regular Half-Elf instead of Half-Human Elf, thus giving him slightly better racial bonuses (Such as +2 Dip I think) ->[I made him half-human for racial proficiency with longbows. Rangers automatically have it]
I'll be able to use Rapid Shot
I'll have a favoured enemy
I'll be able to track shit etc.
Much more skills
I can replace Zen Archery with some other useful feat, say precision shot to negate that -4 for shooting into combat

and probably a couple other bits and pieces.

The downsides are:
It'll take me 2 more levels of cleric after that (so when we hit level 5) to gain access to lvl 2 heal spells

Now, personally I'd love to do this, and honestly I think it might be better to dip sooner rather than later. I thought, however, it might be nice to ask your opinions on this, since my role in this party is basically healer and I would be briefly diminishing my utility to the group. Again, I figure doing this early means we could get by on CLW for longer, and then I'll have cure moderate wounds (2d8+1/lvl) once we hit level 5, which is when we'll need it more.

So, to the floor. Thoughts?

Clerics are more than just healers. In the final fight against Rislyn, we had a healer but we didn't have a cleric. And that was why we lost.

If you do that you will definitely be making yourself weaker and less useful. You're currently a healer, later on you'll do more. We have like 5 ranged attackers, we don't need another. We have 1 cleric, and we need you a lot. In addition, later on once you get more spells and fights become shorter, you'll be busy casting spells and will have less time with which to shoot things.

You might feel useless when your deity abandons you and you keep missing but you're not useless, you gave us enough HP to survive. And later on you'll do more. If you go ranger you'll end up a cleric who's trying to be a ranger and is useless at both.

Good point. Some of our ranged attackers are ditching ranged attacks soon though, is the only thing. Plus, I was only gonna dip two so after that I can still get useful cleric stuffs. Do we have any idea approximately how high we'll level to over the course of the campaign?

PEDIT: Would aim to finish at cleric 9 ranger 2

Ranged attackers also aren't that necessary though. Clerics are necessary.
At level 11 if you don't dip ranger you'll have access to harm, heal, and hero's feast. And that's only the the spells beginning with H in PHB. But like, there's a general pattern in cleric spells: Whatever the king of the universe is at that level, they have a spell to counter. At L5 evokers are king, clerics get protection from energy. At L7 battlefield control is king, clerics get freedom of movement. (Also, if you have freedom of movement and GIF lays down battlefield control we can do fun things like being able to move while our enemies can't, vs just making enemies unable to move but also being unable to go near them which happens without FoM). Also at L7, enervation shows up. Enervation is scary. Clerics get Death Ward, which completely protects against enervation at L7.

If you dip two ranger levels you're a level behind, so you'll get the ability to counter something just as it stops being useful. (Besides enervation, enervation builds generally get better after L7)

Who makes strong and valid points.

I do think you should play what you want to play, and after talking with you, it sounds like you would really enjoy playing a ranger 2/cleric X over a pure cleric.

I think that you want to play cleric 0/ranger X. I'm all for people playing the classes they enjoy, but not dying comes first. And clerics help a lot with the whole not dying thing.

Sure, having a cleric helps not dying. A lot. But you don't need a cleric to survive. I've seen many parties without a cleric do quite well.

ConMan, or any other player for that matter, should not be expected to "bail out" the party by playing a pure cleric, when he would rather be playing some other class.

I see what you're saying and I think I may just continue on with cleric. I think I just felt a bit cabbage in that session and figured ranger levels'd be useful. My next character I'll probably go back to ranger  although I
am
tempted to try a rogue or something.
as far as cleric 0 ranger x, I think dipping ranger and continuing on would be more viable if we were playing our characters for longer than just up to level 11. (Not saying I have any problems with that, in fact it's rather refreshing creating a new character!)
Also I need to get the Holz family tree out of my head and into text. In my head I've kinda decided 4 siblings (Karl, Lukas, and then maybe another brother and a sister).
Also if any of ye have been following Hobo, I
may
have accidentally included the party pic from last campaign in a portfolio of engineering drawings which I have submitted. I'll keep you updated on that as the facts emerge.
