Okay. So that was actually fun. I went to the park next to my apartment complex and people put down a combined 4 lures at once and although it's hard to know because people moved around so much, I stopped counting at 50.
in any case, challenging a gym is not necessary, and you can train at gyms belonging to your team to increase prestige and your pokemon wont faint!!!!!

caught a Dratini and a Golduck today, took over two gyms (coulda gotten ~3 more but they keep glitching out on me), hatched an Omanyte, and caught a 330cp Eevee which gave me exactly enough candy to evolve it immediately into a 869cp Vaporeon.
today was a good day.

My entire neighborhood is apparently just Weedles and Pidgeys. Went to the closest thing Hazel Dell has to a downtown, caught some Eevees and Ghastlys there.
Finally hit level 5, have to figure out how gym battling works.
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.
I just logged on to three Rattatas as the closest Pokémon to me.
Catching one got me up enough rattata candy to evolve a previous one I had.
I'm worried about this Radicate's health though. It only weighs 2.5 kg. (Less than it did as a rattata) The pokedex also says it's meant to be 18!

As I pass dozens upon dozens of people walking around in small groups muttering phrases to themselves I am struck by how Mr dursley must have felt when wizards talked excitedly to each other after the first fall of Voldemort.
We took two gyms yesterday, held them for at least 5 hours, but this morning they'd both changed hands. So I realise now it's not going to be realistic to claim coins from a gym by holding it for +21 hours, because the game is designed to make that difficult. It's better to just wait until your shield timer is ready, take as many gyms as you can in a short space of time, and then claim the coins straight away.
Also zor you might be able to take down a trainer who is at least a couple levels higher than you, assuming you have reasonable pokemon for your level. Attacking is easier than defending, and you can also use types to your advantage.
Edit: oh I just read that the lowest pokemon in the gym is a few levels higher. Well you'd have to be prepared for multiple battles as you chip away at it. If you can defeat just one of the gym pokemon each time, using 6 of yours, eventually you can weaken the gym to zero. You'll need a lot of potions and revives though.

Mr. Dursley is also kind of an asshole, so any feelings of sympathy I might have had just disappears before it ever forms.

We also did something similar near where I live. In total, I gained 4 levels, caught over 100 pokes, and spun over 40 pokestops today.

From what I understand you can co-operate with someone from your team in a gym battle by fighting at the same time. Supposedly the enemy pokes take damage in real-time. Haven't had a chance to try this out as a lot of the locals are either Mystic or Insight, and I'm Valor.
Ingress is arguably the deeper game right now from what I can tell but the Ui is terrible. The biggest appeal for me right now is its fad but phenomenon nature. I'd play it now or not play it.

yeah. the first few weeks are probably going to be the coolest. I just can't imagine people gathering in the numbers I saw yesterday when this has been out for 4 months.
