If you're training at your own team's gym, then no you can't team up. You can only take in a single pokemon and yes this is hard.
If you're attacking an enemy gym, then you can team up, you just need to enter battle at the same time as someone else (not sure whether you have to be on the same team as your accomplice for this to work, e.g. whether blue+yellow can join battle against a red gym).

easier than strengthening a gym. I'm pretty sure a couple of lvl 20 players could take down level 10 enemy gym, with bit of time and a few potions.

If your argument is simply that going from level 20 to 21 is going to take longer without an egg, sure. And I can see some value in mitigating the frustration by the relative slowness of advancing in later levels.
But if your argument is that using an egg later on gets you further faster, that's probably wrong. Because you GET to level 20 faster. And sure you might slog a bit more in that time period between 20 and 21, but that doesn't mean overall you're going to end up with a lower level of total XP.

I think they can, some guy joined me in a gym battle once and I'm pretty sure he wasn't yellow. Not 100% sure tho.

I'm annoyed toda, i went down to take the gym and a dick drove up next to me and stole it from m after i defeated it.
Bloody car players. If he was walking then I'd be yeah whatever as I'd have been able to laugh about itl, but just pulling up, and popping a pokemon in and driving away. Gahh. I didn't really feel like battling again, espeically when the new pokemon was 600 CP higher than the one I'd just taken out. (which was also 100 CP higher than my highest)
I think I'm going to go back to waiting for someone else on my team to come take it so I can move it without having to go through effort.
Also Pidgey's need bigger shoulders, I somehow keep managing to throw the pokeballs over the top of them.

The sightings feature most/all of have right now is still useful though, scans for all pokemon within 700ft (200m) every ~10s, does not show duplicates or lured pkemon

I think that new nearby will be just as useful as the sightings for me.

ye it was one dude in a van pretty much right next to us.
wed taken it to zero a few times and he dropped shit(literally instantly) a few times, but it was always shitty stuff so it was like lel free xp thx bro. Then after doing it a few times he apparently didnt like that so much, so we(me and my sis)had me taking it down and her ready to snag it, but when I beat his 350 golbat or w.e in 10 seconds the prestige went from 2k(and wouldve been 0) to like 7750 or some shit.
it was pretty funny all around cause like holding gyms dont give ya anything past the gold and stuff rofl.
