Prolific isn't just about post count, from what I remember when I was a judge; it's also number of games, activity, contribution, etc...

Yeah, but the Best Performance (Town) could go to upwards of 15 players... not sure how they've handled that in the past, as there used to be some confusion on if it was for a single player or a faction.

Nominate Thestatusquo for, among other reasons, his current avatar, general hilarity, and making a previous winner snort her drink through her nose.

I'd say Most Enjoyable Game Regular [free market/normal] is the category for it, Thok, even though you aren't talking about gameplay (regular there talks about size, not "normality").

We used to have the Best Theme/Adaptation Scummie, didn't we?

Nominate: Zindaras
Scummie: Best Performance - Mafia (solo)
Game: Newbie Game #321
Link: http://www.mafiascum.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4867

Zindaras lost his partner D1, figured out who the Doc was D2 but didn't kill him in order to gain the Doc's allegiance, then bluffed his way through a 3-man endgame after killing the Doc once he actually claimed. Very impressive (the Doc even protected Zindy the night he killed him).

Also, I support the Best Setup, though we already have Best Theme don't we? Or did that one go away?

I'd support some sort of Best Replacer, though I could see that getting the Behind the Scenes award, since technically replacement is a feature of the site, not the game...

Second both of those folks; I think Behind the Scenes gets few enough nominations in an average year that this'd be a good way to utilize it this time around.

Okay, okay, if SV refuses the nomination there's not much point in beating flaying that deceased equine.

I do think it's
declasse
to "unnominate" or oppose a nomination, though. Nominate someone you think is more deserving, or get out of the way, in my view.

PJ, I don't think I know any such thing. As a judge, I certainly debated the merits of each candidate long and hard, and I've seen people go "eh, not really" to a couple of nominations, but I don't recall anyone ever trying to block a nomination before. I don't always read the whole nomination thread each year, though, as I don't play enough games to comment intelligently on most nominations.

IH: Damnit, I left a stray word in there. Remove the extraneous disyllabic "beating" if it assists you in diagramming my sentence construction in a more effortless manner.

I suppose you could nominate them for the Best Oscar - Scum, but doubt they'd win. We used to have the Most Likely to be Lynched Day 1, but it got axed as mean-spirited (IIRC).

Having watched Most Prolific for a couple of years, I agree that it's our most useless Scummie currently in effect. All of the *good* aspects of being prolific are already covered by the Best Oscar/Professor Mafia awards, and if it's encouraging people to over-reach themselves, it's doing more harm than good. I remember as a judge, it was the one that was tacked on as an afterthought when all the other awards were done, because it seemed so pointless to us.

You've got to build a case for new Scummies, not just "nom my bud lol". See the examples for Pooky's Marathon Day performance, and Luckiest Town (even though I disagree with that one, personally).

While it stretches the analogy of "Oscar", which is always for a singular performance, I think this would be a good standard for Best Performance Town/Mafia (can someone get enough SK/Cult roles to apply for this?). A single performance of extraordinary caliber may sway, but I think the award should reward consistency over luck/power roles.

Yeah, it's not really any worse than the "lynch X just in case" metagame that crops up from time to time. Any given player is less likely to be scum than town in any given game, so it's bad play to always focus on them to the exclusion of everybody else...

Nominate JDodge for Replacer Extraordinaire
, or Behind-the-Scenes, or whatever we're calling the replacing award these days. He's been a replacin' fool in The Road to Rome, keeping numerous games afloat AND actually participating.

See the first post of the Newbie Game Queue and Newbie Game/History for examples: 376, 389, modding 404, 408, 440, 456, AND he's playing in several games as an IC from the beginning. Kudos to him.

Ratio posited a minimum number of games. It's still subject to some gaming, but it's better than straight numbers. Also, these are juried awards, so 'gaming the system' is not likely to work.

Replacements should count against that ratio somehow, even if the role eventually goes on to win. But maybe that's something for the judges to decide.

Mr. Grey also ran Verbose Mafia 2, and will presumably be running the other two parts of the California trilogy sometime in the future.

Also, "London Mod" won Best Night Scene Writer in 2005, for Cadmium and Leonidas.

C'mon folks, just four more days to wind up those endgames and qualify your current games for the 2007 Scummies!

That's a good question, actually. Since Phoebus isn't around to adjudicate, we can look back in history:
  • The original nomination for a newbie was (I believe) informally by Alexander in 2006. No one discussed time-limits then, but Kelly had under 3 months' experience at the time.
  • I then nominated viper0933, who had less than two months' experience at the time (no one seconded).
  • Thok nominated Sarcastro in August 2006, when Sarc. had about three months' experience.
Kelly Chen won.

Looking at the 2007 nominations, The Fonz had 3 months, Kison had ~8 months, White had ~ a month and a half, Dale_Crompton had 3 1/2 months, Shanba had ten months, Erg0 had just over 7 months, and DogMom had just under 7 months, at the time they were respectively nominated.
::edit:: Oh, and Muerrto was nominated for Best Protown when he'd been here three months, and Whome? got nominated with less than two months, and Sudo with just over two months.

I think on a site more than five years old, having started in the past calendar year would make you eligible for a Newbie Award. *shrug*

Second gemelli
, it's the achievement, not the current status, that I'd like to recognize.

I'll hopefully be back with more this weekend.

Technically, it'd be the first nominee for the 2008 Scummies, though I guess that's up to mith in the end...
