A Vigilante is not something you should be using in any game, but
especially
not a Newbie. This is especially true as a Vigilante is a highly swingy role (it could potentially win the game on Night 1 or lose it on Night 2). A Vig in the hand of a weak player (like most Newbies) can be heavily anti-Town. Vigs have a disproportionate impact on the game. The skill of any other PR has less of an impact. For example, a successful Cop might catch scum, which is very good, but a Cop that targets only innocents clears them which is also good. No role (in Matrix6, not even the Jailkeeper) can hurt Town by using their ability, but Vigilante can be extremely damaging to Town. This detracts from the "majority rule" theme of Town's lynch, which is something that must come first in Newbies.

I think Gamma has the right idea. Vigilantes are clearly the role of the future; gotta keep up with the times. But I still think his setup is a bit too traditional; therefore, I propose this slight modification:

If you think that things can get toxic towards people who fucked up normally in a game, just wait until you have a newbie take atrocious shots because he has no clue what he's doing in a newbie game and watch the results. Vigs are fine in games where's a presumption of at least slight competence among players, but in games where you presume that a majority of the people are completely new or pretty new, that's a recipe for disaster.

There's nothing that says that a fake can't beat the real thing.
You must not imagine that for beings like you and us there can be laughter. The low men laugh, and we envy them. But for us, the higher ones, there is no laughter, only an unending vigil, purely serious, stretching on into the night.

That doesn't fix the issues w vig at all. In fact it makes it WORSE to potentially have a newbie take a bad shot n1, hit MYLO, and on top of that never get to shoot again.

Yeah I agree that even one shot may be too much for a newbie, since what should be taught to them is the fundamentals. (How to lynch and not be lynched, how to scum hunt, actually give them a reason to care about their slot) I would rather them have something like Town IC or an investigative. Check out Toto's thread on IC. If they somehow fuck up the investigative slot, there is not too much harm except they might just die themselves via lynch. They will hopefully have some leads left. The lynch has to have a great commitment to it, while the vig can easily just kill whoever willy nilly by
