What I still haven't figured out is if the speed of the timer is a function of 1) just the amount of time you've spent playing the game, 2) the number of bonuses you've achieved, or 3) the amount of time spent on a particular level. Likely it's some combination of the three, but I'm not surely exactly how it is determined.

I'm pretty sure it's the level you are on. It gets less and less tolerant the further on you go. It could be #1 though too.
I never watched the timer for long enough periods, I'm too busy trying to see where another match is, otherwise I'm dead

It definitely does, just sit on Level 1 for a while - it starts taking over two seconds at first, but that doesn't last long. It definitely goes up faster though if you rush the levels... really hard to figure it out.
