I have been thinkin' about the food-piggy. I think his prod on the sunny diamond came at a time when it really turned a weak and simmery wagon into real one, which is where scurvy scallywags be backstabbin' their mateys the least frequently, in me experience.

At the same time, that be the best explanation for the mermaid to be sleepin' with the fishies, but that could also just have come from no one openly suspectin' the remainin' scoundrels and believin' that the mermaid was especially proficient-like.
