The crane had the potential to be useful. If the town had bandwagoned the crane, and the crane had come forth, the crane could have been a vigilante-type role, trying to kill whomever the town said. If they failed, of course, the next day's lynch was easy. (Reminds me of the water test for witches... :() Of course, whether the town could TRUST the crane is another story.

And using the crane as vig would run down the town's numbers faster than using lynches only. Vigs are useful because they can occasionally kill scum.
