Dictionary of "tells"

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Wed Nov 18, 2009 11:22 am

Post by Ether »

Disclaimer: I think many of these, although not all, can be used as valid tells sometimes. However, I think people frequently drop these words without actually caring what they mean or why they make a person more likely to be scum.

Appeal to authority - This is when a player who is more experienced than you suggests that it is more experienced than you.

Appeal to emotion - This is when a player provides a (usually unsolicited) reason that it might be town.

Buddying - This is when someone defends a player that you think you have a pretty good case on.

Chainsaw defense - This is like buddying, but the guy you're attacking is still scum.
Seriously, people, even the guy who published this tell admits that it doesn't work when both players are still alive.

Defending known scum - A strong tell. Much more reliable than distancing from or ignoring known scum, but a combination spread throughout the game is even better.

Defensiveness - This is when a player defends itself.

Deliberately acting scummy - This is when a person admits to doing something that you believe to be a scumtell.

Distancing from known scum - A strong tell. Much more reliable than defending or ignoring known scum, but a combination spread throughout the game is even better.

Hypocrisy - This is when someone is on a bad wagon, but then the next day acts like people on that wagon are more likely to be scum.

Ignoring known scum - A strong tell. Much more reliable than defending or distancing from known scum, but a combination spread throughout the game is even better.

Knowing too much - See buddying. Only scum could know that the person you are attacking is really town.

Leading the town - This is when people keep nodding along to what a player says, but you can't logically disagree with it either.

Lying - If someone is caught giving two different excuses for a behavior in two different posts,
it must be policy lynched on sight regardless of anything else it has done
.

Rushing the day - This is when someone tries to achieve a lynch.

Selective scumhunting - This is the exact same thing as tunnelvision, but tunnelvision refers to stupid townies. Selective scumhunting, on the other hand, is a scumtell.

Setting up mislynches - This is when someone is suspicious of multiple players at the same time.

Unexplained voting - This is when a player explains its vote in a separate post, or votes right below a supposedly scummy post its target made.

Useless to us now - This is when a player has been outed as a power role. If it's telling the truth, scum will just nightkill it anyway.

Vote-hopping - This is when someone moves its vote.

WIFOM - Your case might be right, so someone bringing up alternate explanations counts as this.
As I move my vote
Towards your wagon, town is taking note
It fills my head up and gets louder and
LOUDER

Straight out of my standard vanilla town playbook.
Guard your honor. Let your reputation fall where it will. And outlive the bastards.

I think this definition is what people should generally mean when they call someone out for acting in a defensive manner if they want it to be an actual tell: "excessively concerned with guarding against the real or imagined threat of criticism, injury to one's ego, or exposure of one's shortcomings" (dictionary.com def. # 5).

What about when somebody tries to get a bandwagon goin' on somebody?

Is it valid to claim they are trying to rush the day?

Slightly less so than actually trying to achieve a lynch (and there are huge gulfs between voting someone, joining a wagon, and trying to lynch someone) but nonetheless it's worth taking note of.

The scumminess factor is comparable to "being invisible" or "being indecisive", but pales in comparison to "waffling".

Distancing is also apparantly much more reliable than the others.

What's with that?

The action which seems to have the strongest correlation to having a mafia role appears to be registering on this site.
My posts are best read in the calm, reassuring voice of Morgan Freeman. I don't sound anything like him, but they sound best that way.

I believed this one for a very long time, until I started realizing I would often do the same thing even as town. =(

It's a shame, because you can't nail scum in the same way without it.

It's absolutely valid, RayFrost. In fact, this hypothetical scumbag would be guilty of both bandwagoning
and
trying to rush the day. When you're making your case, you can dedicate a separate paragraph to each of these offenses.

*shrugs* Unless the reasons are mutually exclusive, I don't see why that should be a rule. People can have multiple reasons for their actions.

What about if it is in the RVS and the individual makes the first vote and says "BANDWAGON THIS PERSON!!!!"

still valid?

It's not foolproof though. I'm
never
scum.
and regardless of how true that is, the sooner that becomes a meme the better

@RayFrost: All statements and accusations made in the RVS carry as much weight as statements and accusations made on Page 20.
In addition, you can wagon someone just for saying "RVS". Everyone knows that doesn't (or shouldn't) exist.

Vi:

I should be lynched in 90% of my games, then. I knew I was bad as town, but not this bad :(

edit: and I'll continue going for bandwagons in the early game to get games moving, so yeah... I'll continue to be bad

Lol, "his or her" is probably most correct.

Or just use "his" because female players can never be scum, anyway.

I usually stick with the generic 'him'/his'.

Vi is wrong; you shouldn't worry too much about what you do during the RVS. Anyone who tries to lynch you that early is
definitely
rushing the day. The fact that you're deliberately acting scummy might negate that, though--especially if someone calls you on it later.

I don't like the singular "they." I prefer dehumanizing hypothetical characters who don't really exist.

Use "they". There's even a use of singular "they" in the King James Bible. Are you saying that God used incorrect grammar? ;)

Whoever made that blasphemous translation went straight to hell.
  • Best

    "It"
Alternating between "he" and "she" in different examples
Using "he or she" when necessary
    Avoiding pronouns
"He" (but this option has no merits that alternating doesn't have)
    "They"

    Worst
