Also keep in mind it's not a value judgement on the show, I still am gonna enjoy the show, but it definitely reflects racist attitudes that I find problematic.

Anyway the episode was good! A whole lot of complaints about it on r/freefolk and r/gameofthrones (apparently the whole ending got leaked so I'm steering clear of the former) but I honestly thought it was a great episode. Poor Dany though. Also kinda pissed off at Sansa for sullying the Stark honor.

ive seen the complaints about the scorpions killing the dragon and frankly i dont care. the night king killed a dragon with one well-placed spear. i like that the dragons arent this impenetrable plot armor vehicle.

however.

i do have a problem with the cersei scene. what in the hell makes anyone think cersei would be above slaughtering them all right there? seriously. she blew up the sept of balor like it was nothing. she's willing to cross lines. hell, the lannisters were responsible for the red wedding. fuck courtesy rules. she brought the mountain back from the dead using dark magic. she doesn't give a fuck about protocol. that's what is compelling about her. cersei has grown from someone who bends the knee and plays the game into someone who has realized there's nobody stopping her from taking shortcuts.

episode wouldve been about 100x better if cersei just offed missandei and then opened fire on them, taking out a few characters in the process. let her wipe out some main characters. hell, let her wipe out tyrion for being so dumb as to underestimate cersei for the umpteenth million time.

The fact that the scorpion is capable of it, sure. Especially given the wounded and thus less mobile state. But didn't they see them in the previous battle in season 7? When they just started flying towards kings landing I was thinking, don't they have those cross bows? Isn't this a horrible idea? And then a dragon dies to one. Why didn't they have a counter measure? How didn't they see the giant fleet of boats? It's all shot for shock factor to emulate the big moments of earlier seasons without understanding why those moments were effective.

i did not.

I'm not quick to declare books better than tv/movies because they're different media. But to me, the show has been full of satisfying small things and unsatisfying taken as a whole. This was papered over for the first few episodes because the battle with the nightking was a big deal and it was decently well done. We didn't need to really focus on the overarching political machinations. But now that it's done, we're back and it doesn't feel good.
