Insane?

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Thu Oct 13, 2005 7:45 pm

Post by Einsteinmonkey »

In every game I've played (a grand total of 2...), the people who I was
absolutely
sure were mafia were actually pro-town, and all the people who I thought were definitely town were actually mafia. Does this mean that I'm "insane", and consequently, what if I were to follow my thoughts but then reverse my decision? Would that actually be a more sound strategy than doing what I really think?

You're not insane -- I would still go with what you feel --- a lot of people here are just really good at seeming innocent when they play mafia - it comes with practice.

I'm actually apparently sub-conciously good at spotting scum, but I rarely get to live through the game long enough to put these suspicions into action. I think once game where I died day one I put up a list of the most suspicious people IMO and about 3/5 were mafia.

Though if you are insane, swapping your beliefs will just swap how you see everything.

It also helps when you get used to some people's playing styles. Some people just always play in a way that looks really scummy if you don't know their playing style.

Einstien, dont feel bad. It's pretty natural to feel that way when you are new. My first game (a newb) it all came down to my vote on the last day, and I lynched the Cop. ^_^'
I suggest playing some newb games here before playing with the experianced player son Salvation (I assume you are the same Einstienmonkey)

Don't believe them, they're all SKs waiting for you to sleep to slice you to pieces. Image Image
For now, I'll ask Thoth to come up with reasons why I should be voting for him, and I'd like him to respond to those.

True, true. I think it's her eyes. Gets you every time.

More on topic, einsteinmonkey, I'd say that you should be much, much more wary of being convinced someone is scum based on guts or a feeling, than you should about feeling someone is innocent.

There's a trap where you start to interpret all a player's posts from the prespective of their being scum, and you become unable to get past it (been there, many times).

I made the
exact same error
as Einstein, in the
exact same game
.

So that's a newbie for you...and I'm about ready to sign up for another game. I think I can take some more punishment. ;)

On the other hand, don't ignore your early gut feelings, either.

I don't know how many times I had a feeling early on day 1 that person X was scum, accused him, and then forgot about it when we got more "solid" information later, only to find out at the end of the game that I was right all along.

There were six combinations of who could be scum out of the four remaining players. I said, "No way it could be Axelrod and Narninian. That's the least likely one of them all." I was wrong: http://www.mafiascum.net/forum/viewtopi ... &start=206

It wasn't me. Dybeck took control of my ID and cheated the town from its victory but in fact, I was innocent, as the inspection on me proved it.

Einstein, play some more games and you will get successful sooner than later.
