This is exactly what I'm saying. The direct effect isn't one within the game at all. There are plenty of things you can do to someone while playing a game that will affect their performance that are not in the spirit of the game.

The implication of this is that if this was universally and exhaustively understood, then personal attacks would have no effect, making this a moot point.
And there we have it again. The game is psychological, so maybe "suck it up" is the appropriate response. All else being equal, it seems like good policy to react coolly to personal attacks. And, since this game is psychological, maybe it comes with the territory and anyone who can't take it should probably find another game.
