Mafia University

I think the title is pretty self explanitory... i think we need a mafia "college." With a teacher for each "class." There'd be like... Mafia 101 (newb class) which would be like... reviewing rules, going over basic strategy, etc (MBF's flash would be "required reading") Modding 201 which would be like... how to mod games and such, how to make balanced set ups... showing how to avoid certain mistakes.

There of course could be other classes... I suppose it'd have to be a subforum, w/ each class as it's own tread. But before we make any big plans, we need volunteers for professors, and ideas on classes and such.

I think it's a little too large of an idea for mafiascum at the present. It could eventually become a requirement before modding/being in games, which could be a pain for players who are already skilled. Personally I think education by experience will work just as well.

I would tend to think experience is the best teacher for this kind of thing.

Yeah...I think the best way to learn is to play, and to discuss stratagy in a forum like this. Whatever role a "mafia university" is likely to play is already covered by the Wiki, I suspect.
I want us to win just for Yos' inevitable rant alone. -CrashTextDummie

I agree with Yos. Beat me to it. Experience, and if that fails, there's always the wiki.

Lol, the people against it are the ones that post :P.

I've seen the idea thrown around... so i'm trying to take the innitiative and getting the ball rolling.

It doesn't matter how much time I spend playing or going to class, I'll still never learn.

I think teaching and such is a way to effectively cut off imagination which is what makes these games so good...

Besides, the game is so cyclic, that you'd never know what's in style. And it's evolved quite a bit in just a few years. Nothing says it'll stay the same... but if we instituted a MU, then it would almost force it to get stagnant.

After payola mafia, I think I'll offer a class on why you don't let claimed docs that never die live to endgame....
Actually I think I'll adopt a "always kill a claimed doc" policy in general.

Furthermore, I've been using the GMC tell (Gestalt Mafia Codex - basically, citing "tells" without being able to justify
why
it's a tell and why it applies to the current situation, as a) it's a variant on Appeal to Authority, and b) scum are generally aware of such tells and try to excise them from their play anyway - this is particularly true when someone cites GMC arguments against an experienced player) for some time and it's proved quite reliable.

Once anything is "common knowledge", it ceases to be useful. A MU's very existence would render itself obsolete - the game wouldn't get stagnant, it'd just move beyond whatever was in the MU. The best we could hope for is to have a better understanding of the rules, but not how to play.

I'd perfer to have an Independent Learning section of the Wiki, where people could learn at their own pace. Between the Road to Rome and scumchat, I think we've got a pretty good newbie training system going already. And as CA said, you can lead a player to skill but you can't force them to drink...

What I would really like to happen is that at the end of each newbie game, the mod should write detailed notes evaluating the performance of each player and giving them tips on how to improve their play. Most mods in newbie games either skip this stage entirely or limit themselves to 1-sentence blurbs.

I mean, come on, you moderated a three-week game, can't you take one hour of your life to write notes more detailed than "good game, scum/town!"

I'm always reluctant to get too in-depth on analyzing what players did in the game, because I don't know what their motivations/external/hidden factors are, and don't want to a) lambast them for playing poorly when something else was going on that stopped them from doing well, or b) embarass them by praising something that was purely an accident/not even intentional. So I usually leave it to the players themselves or the other players to critique the game.

Also, just because you're a mod doesn't mean you're a Mafia God; it's easy to say things "should" have gone another way from your perspective, as you knew the entire setup. I'm not sure how I'd take that, as a player, getting Pronouncements from On High...
