Rules

Inspired by Equinox's, Glork's and Ether's rulesets.

important bit
  • Day 1: up to 10 days, Day 2+ up to 7-days, Night: 48 hours.
  • Majority lynches
  • 36 hours before prod, 24 hours before replacement, 24 hour weekends
  • Bah posts allowed (limit: 1, free of game related content)
  • I have some unusual rules about animated GIFs, tiny text, and prodging. Scroll down for details.
  • Don’t be a dick

  1. Follow all site rules.

  2. Mod colour
    – My mod colour is
    grey
    ; don't use it.
  3. Behaviour
    - Don’t be a dick. This is a heated game but toxicity will not be tolerated. Attack the play not the player. If your fellow players tell you to stop, you must stop. If you do not stop, I will tell you to stop. If you still do not stop, you will be force-replaced. Asking people to stop voting you or to stop scumhunting you entirely doesn't count for this rule and you may find yourself lynched if you try it.
  4. Don't talk about ongoing games
    - You may not talk to each other about this game outside of threads I have created for this purpose. You may not talk about other ongoing games in this thread.
  5. Animated GIFs
    - are of the devil, but they are permitted behind spoilers if clearly labelled as such.
  6. Tiny text
    - is also of the devil, keep it 70+ please.
  7. Provable randomness
    - is against the rules. Saying that you rolled a dice is fine, using dice tags or random.org is not.
  8. Claiming scum
    - by yourself is fine. Claiming scum with another player is against the rules.
  9. Cryptography
    - is forbidden. Breadcrumbing is okay.
  10. Confirmation
    - You have about 72 hours to confirm your role and your alignment by PM. Game will start sooner if everyone confirms. Posting in a private topic counts as confirmation.
  11. Days
    - Days last about 7-10 days. Extensions may be granted if there are replacements.
  12. Activity
    - You must post at least once every 36 hours or I will Prod you. You then have 24 hours to post in the game thread or I will replace you. If you come back before I find a replacement, you can stay. The activity timers run at half-speed on weekends. Players can request me to prod somebody early. This will only count as an official prod if you don't post before you would have been due for a prod. If you haven't posted in the 24 hours before the thread is locked for night, you must reply to the night start PM or you will be replaced during the night.
  13. Vacation/Limited Access
    If you need to be absent for longer than this, you should declare
    V/LA
    in bold in the thread like this: [
    b]
    @Mod: I will be v/la until Thursday
    [
    /b]. While you are V/LA, you will be nudged once every 54 hours. Two nudges equals one prod. If you have not posted game advancing content in 5 days, regardless of V/LA status, you will be replaced.
  14. Prodging
    - A naked "prod dodge" does not reset the prod timer. To avoid being prodded/replaced for inactivity, include some game advancing content in your prodges, such as "got prodded; xxxx is still scum."
  15. Quoting
    - You may not quote (or copy paste) any private information into the thread, including your role PM and any mod communication.
  16. Voting
    - Votes must be in bold in the format VOTE: Plotinus or
    Vote: Plotinus
    . Strong preference for using vote tags instead of bold tags. Unvotes are nice but not required. If I think it’s a vote, it’s a vote, no tricks. Type [
    v]Plotinus[
    /v] to vote and [
    uv]Plotinus[
    /uv] to unvote.
  17. Lynching
    - Days end early when a simple majority of players (50% of living players + 1 rounded down) vote to lynch somebody. If a majority is not reached at deadline or if a majority of the players vote for no lynch, the day will end without a lynch. At evens, 50% is sufficient for no lynch.
  18. Twilight
    - Begins when a majority is reached and lasts until I lock the thread. You're still alive until I flip you so you can talk in any game threads you have access to until then, but no votes or unvotes will be counted.
  19. Night
    - Night lasts at least 48 hours. The night phase can be shortened if every living player -- even those with no night actions -- agrees to it and if I'm not busy.
  20. Action submissions
    - You may submit actions via PM (if town) or PT (if scum). If the actions are not submitted by the deadline then you do nothing. You can change your mind as many times as you like before the deadline.
  21. Reminders
    - If I don't hear from you about your night actions, I'll PM you 24 hours before the deadline. This doesn't count as a prod. If I still don't hear from you, you will take no action.
  22. Play to win
    - this particular game, not some future one, and keep it fun!

All role PMs have been sent out (in the order of the signup list so timestamps mean nothing)! We will start in (expired on 2018-11-29 08:00:00) or when [8/9] people have confirmed, whichever happens sooner.

The above clock and any others used throughout this game will be accurate from the time you loaded the page.

Note: I mistakenly posted this early before any role PMs had been sent, and then I deleted it pretty much immediately. They've been sent for real now!

Official Vote Count 1.00Every few weeks, MafiaScum has a Song Contest. Pick a song that you like, check that it hasn't been entered before, pick a country for pseudoanonymity, and submit it! Then in a week or so when entries are posted, give everything a listen and vote for your favourites. It's pretty fun and a great way to expose yourself to some new music.

If you're new to mafiascum, I suggest checking out MishMash for non mafia games, General Discussion, and Mafia Discussion but be careful not to talk about this game, not even in hypotheticals, not until we're done playing! We also have a Wiki.

LynchingWith 9 votes in play, it takes 5 to lynch.

Everybody
(0): Nobody

Not Voting
(9):0verki11, Dethnote, LCpl Jones, RCEnigma, RainZI, Roo, Thespio, naturalbreadcrumbs, teacher

Deadline:
(expired on 2018-12-09 08:45:00).

Mod notes:
Good luck everyone!

dethnote and RainZI have another (expired on 2018-11-29 20:00:00) to confirm before they will be replaced.

Please take a moment to familiarise yourselves with my ruleset because I have some rules you may not have encountered in other games before regarding animated gifs, tiny text, prodging and perhaps some other things.

IC Intro, adapted from many othersHey everybody! I'm teacher, your Inexperience-Challenged (IC) player for the game (it's my first time)! That means I am here to lead by example and answer your questions along the way. I will be playing to my win condition to the best of my ability, but if you have questions about Game Theory or Da Rules, I am required to answer them honestly, and to be clear when I am speaking as am IC vs. as a Player. Just as an FYI, I am a teacher with limited daytime access, but I will be signing on at night every night to give thoughts and respond.

Here are some helpful links (a lot of them from our helpful wiki):

-> Forum Rules and Guidelines
-> The Glossary
-> Commonly Used Abbreviations
-> The Newbie Guide
-> Articles on How to Play Well (be sure to check the dates these were written/updated, as good advice changes over time)

And here are some helpful tips:

->
Try to check in at least once a day.
Besides the activity requirements listed in Plotinus' original post, it's just necessary for a fun and healthy game that everyone
plays
. If you post very rarely, or only post a little bit at a time, you may get scumread for lurking. Even if you are not scumread for it, what's the fun in playing a game where multiple people are hardly participating?

->
"Site Meta"
is the description of how people on Mafiascum like to play mafia. Things can be different on other online mafia sites, or if you play IRL, so it's good to know what's expected of you on this site. These aren't "rules", per se, but if you don't follow these guidelines it is likely things will go poorly for you on MS. Some examples are...

--->
Give "intent to hammer"
when you want to place the final vote on a player. This gives time for that player to give a final plea and to claim their power role, if they have one (or if they are lying scum). If, after that player has posted, you are still sure you want to hammer them, go ahead and place the final vote. It is also common courtesy to declare "L-1" ("1 Vote away from lynch) when you place the penultimate vote on a player.

---> Don't claim your role until you are in danger of getting lynched - usually, you want to keep it a secret right up until someone gives intent to hammer. Sometimes, everyone will agree to claim in a "massclaim".
Other than these situations, do not make your role obvious,
even if you are a vanilla townie, as claiming makes it easier for scum to kill power roles at night.

--->
Do not fake claim a power role as town!
While it may help you avoid getting lynched, you might cause a real PR to out themselves by counter claiming - then the mafia will know who the PR is, and you will probably get lynched for lying to town. Feel free to fake a claim as scum, though, if you think it would help.

--->
Don't vote for yourself.
There are very rare occasions where this is helpful in non-newbie games, but usually only for scum, so if you do it here you will certainly get scumread for it.

->
Mafia is hard!
As town, it can be hard to figure things out, and stressful when people think you're scum.
That's okay!
Just share your thoughts on who you think is scum as they come to you, and don't be afraid to change your mind. As scum, it can be hard to lie convincingly, and stressful when people think you're scum. Don't let that scare you! Try to think of what you would post if you were town, and don't be afraid to "change your mind".

-> This is a game.
Have fun!
:]

Oh this started. Hello I am Dr. Evil, I'll be your SE (Semi Experienced) today, it's also our job to help with any questions you guys might have. Keep in mind SE's aren't bound to the ICs rules and it is entirely possible for us as SEs to lie, cheat, and steal to play towards our win condition (as either alignment)

I will try to be as helpful and forthcoming as I can, especially since our IC will have periods of inactivity. I'm sure Lcpl will as well, he's a decent enough lad.

That monologue wasn't nearly evil enough

@all new players
don't worry too much about making mistakes, just play and have fun :)

We usually start here on this site with a period called RVS (random voting stage), where people place semi-random votes. Since we are in a low-info stage, the reactions / interactions around these votes are the best way to get the game going.

Scummy RVS wagon building? (mostly kidding, just signed on at lunch and wanted to say at least something game relevant in addition to the below).

IC Things. Thx RCE and Nearly Bird for the SE/RVS explanation as well. In case you are wondering why RCE used "our," I believe they are a hydra of two people who have agreed to act together in one slot for the game. Such a practice is relatively common on Mafia Scum Dot Net, and can be quite fun. They/He can of course correct me if I am wrong about that.

1. RL years ago; appr 12 forum games in the last year.
2. I effort obv!town (but have a lot less time during the school year)
3. I effort obv!town (see above).
4. Motivations, probabilities, and associations. For each post, I try to ascertain the motive behind it. Does it seem town-motivated or scum-motivated. To be sure, both town and scum have similar objectives, but they arent overlapping. Town is not as afraid of being lynched, because there will be a mislynch at some point; scum knows that their death is 50% of a loss. Town wants to out real analysis to advance the game; scum wants to repeat information that everybody knows so they can appear to be helping without actually doing it. Another key area of difference is in probabilities. Here, I cant say it much better than a strategy article from the Wiki (link). I'll speak more on associations tomorrow if Im still kicking.

Ahh common misconception I am not a Hydra it is purely a coincidence, although I suspect RC gets a kick out of it. My use of 'our' was intended to group the SEs (myself and Lcpl) since my points could be applied to both.

1. What is your experience at Mafia - I was introduced to mafia in a cam/Skype setting and the style of play is pretty different. Cam and Forum both have pros and cons but I enjoy both.
2. How do you play as town - like this
3. How do you play as scum - not like this
4. What do you think gives away a player as scum or town - I'll answer this one seriously since I don't think it has a big impact on other slots play. Motivation and Tone are very difficult for scum to hide or emulate.

Hello All

1) Was a theatre kid in high school, and this was a favorite game of ours when we would just be hanging out with nothing to do. Started playing forum mafia regularly on a music message board a few years ago. But alas, the game is almost nonexistent at this point. Heated games and certain players going over the line, plus overall board activity going down caused games to be hard to come by for a while. So I thought I'd venture over here and give it a whirl, this is game number 2 for me here.

2) To win

3) To win

4) I think frequently scum give themselves away by trying too hard to build consensus for moves. Trying to get town players that read them as town to act as a collective or to hide behind those players assertions. "Contributing" but not really contributing.

KidLyoko replaces Dethnote, who failed to pick up their role PM in time.
snowbeast replaces RainZi, who failed to pick up their role PM in time.

They have (expired on 2018-12-01 20:10:00) to confirm or they too will be replaced.
The failure mode of clever is asshole.

I was going to wait until everyone checked in to really start playing but it's not often you get solid page 1 reads and I've found scum

VOTE: Snowbeast

The case is actually good too.

1. Two games on an old account, two games on this, and a hydra game (3 scum / 2 town). 2-3 games on other sites too

2. Not that well... I do my best but I don't work well in a low-info environment. I just post what enters my head tbh.

3. My favourite mode - I usually am townread (don't ask me why!). I basically look friendly and helpful while making minor pushes, trying to look non-blatantly obv!town, etc. I'm more careful with what I post.

4. if you see someone contradicting themselves / changing their story chances are its scum. I don't do associations much, as I never can see them till hindsight but I try to look at motivations. Finally, I think wagons / VCA (vote count analysis) is a very useful tool. e.g. that person who is not voting all day before hammering is definitely scummy.

Where did I not?

@teacher, are two votes even concerning at this stage? I agree maybe L-2 or -1 is but why does this look like possible scum weak wagon building to you?
