I also went into this movie with expectations. I wanted it to be good and thematically coherent!

Okay.

I had a bit of side conversation with Zor, and we talked a little about my biases and perceptions, which evolved into a good old romp through our shared youth reading old-fashioned paper Star Wars books - some of which were good and most of which were kind of trash in retrospect. The fun kind of trash, though! The source of my antipathy for Ms. Nicholson's review is probably the format, and is more generational annoyance than anything so ugly as sexism or even "true fan"-ism. I'm an older Millenial, but in many ways I connect with Gen X more than my own. I prefer analog to digital when I can get it, I never really liked social media despite being a native to it, and I am suspicious of zoomers for no really good reason. So when you see the video I posted below, it's not that he has a beard, it's that that beard has a touch of white in it. He chooses to present his thoughts quickly, to the point, and with visuals from the thing he's talking about.

I went looking for a review done the way I like it, which I felt represented both the good and bad. Here it is - it sums up my feelings on the movie (though I am baffled by his reverence for TLJ) and why I am willing to forgive some of its problems:

I regret the hostility with which I reacted to some criticisms I don't think were correct, but were probably fair to question.

Pine, really?
Pine how is this ok.
Prejudice based on age is among the last most tolerated prejudices I know but when you like are even specifically highlighting how physical and aesthetic the criterion for deciding whether to increase or decrease your approval of the viewpoints that are about to come from that person
I really disagree with how o.k. you seem re-attributing your bias instead of feeling like you need to actually treat all opinions equally or at least totally restrict it to things the speaker has control over.

"What? Nothing? You would make the prince suffer over... nothing?"

I’m not excusing my biases or asking you to do so. After some introspection I have simply identified them and explained myself.

Seems no one has linked this video (which covers pretty much all of my gripes with the film much more eloquently than I ever could) so I'm just gonna drop it in here:

When I was watching the movies I assumed the healing (life transference?) was a dark side power. Rey could do it because she was obviously tapping into darkside powers, this also explains why Ben could do it immediately after his turn to good, and why the Emperor could drain the life from the other 2. I remember Palpatine saying something in Episode 3 when manipulating Anakin that the jedi didn't have powers over life or something. I seem to be the only one who took it this way though. Did anyone else?

I kinda wish that Rey did kill Palpatine and save everyone at the cost of becoming sith. Would of been a neat contrast between her journey and Kylo's. Maybe have Ben kill her cauae she is full of sith now and went too far. Finn could come down and as she is dying, she becomes free of the sith influince and tells Finn that Ben is a good boi. Finn tells her he loves her but she dies. Then Ben lives on having to work hard to redeem himself the end.

Rey was constantly abandoning all her friends, kinda wosh that bit her in the butt more.

Needed more actual death, felt really cheap to have pretty much everyone come to life.

Also sure, the second movie didn't have best press but it is still a trilogy so they should of tried incorporating it to make for an overall better trilogy. As it stands I like the prequel trilogy better since it is far more cohesive.

At first I wasn't big on the fact that the gay kiss was between some extras but the scene was aloud to play in China which was good to have them start being more inclusive.

Liked her being a nobody better than related to Palpatine.
This is my life now

Oh that gay kiss was the worst rainbow capitalism pinkwashing. Like you don't get progressive points for a couple of faceless background extras after you go out of your way to shoehorn in super straight female love interests for your very heterosexual male leads. That kiss made me madder than any of dumb stuff.

I think it sounds pretty bad still. I think bringing palpatine back is probably better than introducing a new secret sith lord behind the sith lord. I really think Kylo was done with following old people after the last jedi though. He and rey were each setup to forge their own path, but rey should have done so learning from the past and kylo doomed to repeat it.
