The Tenements

This story takes place out on a planet that has no official name, a planet off the grid. Different names can be heard depending on what local you are talking to. Sometimes I think the multitude of languages here outnumber the population of this large mining colony.

A certain metal is found here, integral to the construction of space crafts. I have trouble remembering what it's called. I know it's one of the dozens of -iums that make up the composite material of the hull. The Hathor corporation hired me to count numbers, not to remember names, or at least that's what I thought at the time.

Me getting abruptly fired, kicked out of the corporate housing, is the start of this tale.

I found myself staring at the number 7 and the letter B carved in a wooden door, no belongings, a small amount of money and no idea what to do. Inside was a single room with a bed tucked in the corner and a window overlooking the rail system.

As I stared out the window contemplating this new life, there was a quiet knocking. I ignored it at first, thinking the sound was further down, meant for someone else. The source of the knock belonged to a tiny woman who must've been thrice my age, judging by the wrinkles.

She stopped by to welcome me to the community. While I was too wrapped up in my own problems to appreciate the gesture, there was a sense of comfort in the greeting. The tiny woman reminded me of my own grandma, something in the mannerisms.

Before long I was following the frail woman down the stairs leading to the main square. I was expected to participate in a ceremony of sorts known as the election ritual. My curiosity was piqued, having heard rumors of these practices.

To my horror, I learned a daily sacrifice was chosen for the good of the community. A superstitious need to answer for recent disturbing occurrences.

Day One will start when 11 out of 13 have confirmed. Since it is the weekend, you have until monday to confirm before I start looking for any replacements.

I do not feel any action needs to be taken, considering it is borderline. The ceremony took longer than I had suspected, all day in fact. Everyone had gathered around a man covered in soot; later on I was told he worked in the mines as an overseer of sorts. There were hints of respect in the way people described him.

The miner started to explain the ritual, the evil it drives away, our duty to uphold the tradition.

He then asked if there were any newcomers present. After a nudge from a person next to me, I tentatively raised my hand. I was told to come forward and extend a thumb. Injected with some kind of ink, a black dot seemed to glow on my thumb.

The fact that someone would die at the end didn't bother me as much, surprisingly. The suspense was worse, listening to arguments devolve into witch-hunts.

A decision was made, followed by the accused trying to escape. The miner nodded viscously again and again, and proclaimed: "Only the guilty run!"

The frail lady was back again, carrying a plastic bowl filled with some grilled meat, some local cuisine I wasn't familiar with. "Here you go dear," she said, handing me the bowl.

"Thank you," I stammered, "However, I don't have much money to pay for this."

"Don't mention it, we take care of each other here."

A new smell wafted in from the hallway--either the scent of cooking started to fade or this odor was becoming overwhelming. It was both sweetish and sickening. We followed the odor to its source, and found one of the residents lying against the wall.

"Oh dearie me," said the old lady, "we have another one."

Today was worse than I could ever imagine. First was this morning, with the finding of the dead body covered in syringe marks, and then later, with the calamity at the election ritual.

Those pleading eyes of the accused still haunted me. Those eyes were not capable of anything evil; but what could I do against a mob? That haunting face of the accused was nothing compared to the screams of another bursting into flames.

I never saw who it was that set the bystander on fire, and I guess neither did anyone else judging by the apparent confusion. I guess it is easier to remain unseen in a crowd than I would have imagined.

I need to get out of here. What does the Hathor corporation want with this slum anyway? I need to leave this planet.

And what happens to the accused after they are taken away?

The pattern repeated: I woke up. I was handed more of the local cuisine (despite my protests that I hadn't finished the previous dish, the food was good; I never had anything that tender, but it was too much--I couldn't shake the guilt). And another victim was found.

This had to be the work of the Hathor corporation. I didn't want to believe it after the first victim but I had seen those types of syringe marks before. They were distinct amongst a few employees who I used to work with. (What did they say was the reason when I asked them?)

The miner who dictates the election ritual was also there examining the body. His face was lined in grim determination, and I have to admit... it scared me.

He recalled the necessary decisions he had to make in the mines, the "hard truths" of "evil times". The miner demanded everyone be at the ritual today. By the look in his eyes I knew that it would not go well for anyone who skipped the ritual.

I had to know where the miner was taking them after the ritual. I needed to see for myself what exactly I was apart of. While the crowd dispersed, I decided to stay behind. Why I couldn't just ask the miner what happened to the accused, I don't know. Maybe I've stopped trusting people since being fired.

Following was tougher than I would have thought, figuring out the best distance, not too far, not too short. Every time their faces turned to look around, I imagined that I was found out.

The miner and the accused ended going into the alley behind the butcher's shop. I waited several breaths before opening the door they went through, and even then I peered in first, slowly edging the door.

It was cold inside, which made sense with the freezer. Searching through the aisles of frozen meat, I stumbled upon something that made my stomach lurch. I backed away and ran without taking a moment to wonder if the miner noticed me.

I didn't stop running till I was well into the streets, gasping for air and reason. Smoke was rising in the distance.

After yesterday I had trouble sleeping. The first thing I did when I got back to my apartment was throw away the food that was given to me. Yet the smell of it lingered. All through the night I tossed, trying to forget the odor. It followed me into daybreak with the tenants cooking their morning meals.

I couldn't stay here any longer. I could care less if I had nowhere to go; I had enough death for one lifetime. Not even my desire for answers could hold me here.

Flinging the door open, I took off. In my hurry I failed to notice the body at the top of the stairs. I tripped, tumbling down, and hit the back of my head. As I fell, just before my vision faded, all I could think of was... why?
