You're lagging (or the server is lagging). If you destroy a block and it does not pop out, wait a second for the server and your client re-syncronize.

To be honest, there is not a lot of expectation of privacy near the spawn area. If you give about 10 or 20 blocks distance, I don´t think anyone will complain if you build near the spawn. If you go to more secluded areas you might want to find your own spot :-)

The rules is basically common sense - don´t take things from other people, don´t break other people´s buildings, and that is about it.

Oh, and don´t leave floating trees around, please! :-P

Oh, I built that one, thanks! It was supposed to be the central for the rail lines, but we only have like 5 or 6 stations.

You guys write the coordinates to your houses in the thread, so we can add them to the billboard!

Rhinox wrote:
Spawn point seems to be a pit. Is it supposed to be like that?

>_> errrr.... It has been like that for a while. Since the area within ~30 blocks of spawn can only be modified by mods. Someone has to go and use their modly powers to fix that blight.....

I'll around to it this weekend. Promise. For reals...

I think it won't matter once I build a house and sleep in a bed though right?

You should wake up on a bed after you slept in one once. It doesn't matter that you didn't craft the bed. The fact that you are still spawning at the original spawn point is... strange.

Also, we have the /home and /sethome commands set for all players. If you use "/sethome" it will set a personal teleport point in your current location. If you use /home you will teleport to that point.

OK, so when I leave the pit first place a find is a small room with some water in it, and a bed, and a craft table, furnace, and some storage chests? I think it also has a glass green house with some sugar growing? Just wondering if this was someones house and who it belonged to.

That's is somebodies home, I just don't remember whose. I don't think anyone will have a problem with you sleeping in their beds, just don't take their stuff, and fix anything that creepers break (or ask here for someone to fix it). If you want, on the other side of the bay near the spawn (near the domed home), there is a wooden home with a tall wooden tower - that is the public housing.

Next day I wandered around and found the spawn guest house. After I left it I lost it... and I'm not sure how to actually get there from the spawn point

Lol, it is on the other side of the bay. Just follow the tall wooden tower.

I think the plan for this evening is I'm going to spawn in, stay around the spawn point trying to gather resources for the basics, then pick a direction and head that way for X days travel until I find a neat place to call home. Oh, and if I'm feeling pretty good with how things are going, I might build a spawn point gazeebo or something nicer to spawn in than a pit, unless you guys have the pit to spawn in for a reason?

No reason, but you need mod powers to alter the spawn point (maybe that is the reason no one has changed it until now )

Oh last question, how do I change the appearance of my character from the default?

You can upload image files for your profile in the minecraft.net website. I think there is a "profile" page there for you to do that. Also, there are some programs in the wiki that help you with the editing of the image file.

Well, we could change it like a museum -- keep the pit as it is, maybe in a glass case, and build a small building around it :-P

Recently, I have noticed that mobs seem to be less common. Someone in Reddit seems to have found a possible explanation.

Nothing we can do about it ATM, but food for thought.

Hey Guys!

I have made some maps of our server. These are just maps of the areas I have explored tonight. If your construction is not on the map, let me know the coordinates and I´ll go there!

http://claus.castelodelego.org/minecraft/MS.png -- 2D map
http://claus.castelodelego.org/minecraft/MS3.png -- 3D map, 5MB! please be gentle to my server, don´t hotlink this. Also, this map is chopped to save a bit on bandwidth, so landmasses may be closer than they actually are.

Have fun!

UltimaAvalon wrote:I totally can't find Brandi's Sanctuary on that map. This amuses me.

Is the sanctuary there, but not visible? Or is the sanctuary not even there? I'm using a mod that "records" maps from multi-player servers, so if I didn't get close to the sanctuary, it could simply not show up.

Rhinox wrote:I love the maps! The MSTA kinda looks like crop circles :P

That was the idea when I started building it.

Anyone know how to make a still water moat?

Source blocks that are surrounded on all four sides by solid blocks or source water blocks will not form currents. An empty block surrounded on two sides by source water blocks will become a source water blocks.

What this means is that you want to make a "infinite water supply" as a 2x2 water puddle, 1 deep, somewhere near the moat:

XX
XX

If you take a bucket of water from any of those blocks, it will be instantly refilled. Use this to fill your moat with source blocks in every square. Just make sure your moat is 1 deep when you fill it, and there will be no currents. After the moat is filled, you can dig deeper.

That is the gist of it, there are other ways to make a currentless moat, but I think this is the simplest.

That was.... unexpected.

I thought the cart was fast enough (and the areas around it were lit enough), that mobs spawning in the area wouldn´t have enough time to climb the tracks. Seems I was wrong.

I´ll fix the tracks in the weekend, and add some fences to the cave openings.

Thanks for letting us know!

DonJosh -- Notch has released an ¨official¨ (pre-release) version of 1.8. He doesn´t care about the leaking that much.

Converting the world from 1.7 to 1.8 will not be that bad. The limit between the old and new chunks will have some annoying weird walls, but some people may find them ¨alluring¨.

Villages are funny. Abandoned mineshafts are really alluring - long, reveal a lot of minerals. I heard some amazing things about abandoned underground fortresses (libraries! and more!) but haven´t found one yet myself. Endermen are cute. Running is okay. New blocks YAY YAY!

That said, it has a few game stopping bugs:
- Nether with tree leaves seem to crash the game (I have not verified it myself)
- furnaces turning on or off crash the game. I have tried dozens of different video settings, but it is consistent (changing the video setting also crashes the game). I´d wait for the ¨official¨ 1.8 before converting the server.

MME, I heard you like bays:

Image

There is an ocean on the other side of those two spires - I just have to build the channel.

Also, I found a mod the fixes the furnace problem. Although jeb´s tweet says that they are currently fixing the pre-18 release, and then will release the official 18.

Cheers!

Exploring abandoned mineshafts can be scary. So many corners for skeletons and creepers to hide! Worse yet (or better yet) is when a long mineshaft ends in a underground ravina full of lava at the bottom!

UA > Strange, I haven't had memory issues yet. But Jeb has posted a list of things he has already fixed, and memory leaks are among them.

On other news, after 1.8 is properly released and we update our server, UA might consider using this:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comme ... on_171819/

A tool to smooth out the crazy edges that appear between versions.

There is still a lot of speculation out there.

In post 1430, Rhinox wrote:Also, apparently they're like dungeons in that the seed determines where they spawn and is the same for every new world created with the same seed.

I have seen at least one thread in reddit where this was shown to be false (two worlds generated with the same seed, where one had a stronghold in a given location, and the other hadn´t). I guess we need to wait and see.

No the issue with sea levels is native to 1.7/1.8 (1.8 sea level is one below 1.7 or something like that). The guy who made the ¨best of both worlds¨ is trying to find a workaround.

Man, you are unlucky with seeds. Try the seed I'm playing with: "Vlachia"

You will spawn near two spires between a small sea an an inland lake, a large plain to the south and some amazing mountains to the south. In one of the mountains there is a giant lava fall coupled with a giant waterfall.

Man, every seed seems awesome with the new biome code.

Also I've notived that friendly mobs are very abundant, but rumor has it they spawn once per chunk, don't despawn, and don't respawn after you kill them.

Can you link to that discussion? I would love some serious SCIENCE about the rules of mob generation in 1.8. Some things that I know:
* Hostile mobs do respawn. Friendly mobs SEEM to respawn, but I'm not sure.
* Once I sheared a sheep, went far away enough for the block to unload from the memory, returned after a few minecraft days, and when I returned the sheep was still there, sheared
* I haven't seen a sheep spawn in my city in days. :-(

One last thing - I've read its possible to delete old chunks in established worlds so that they can be regenerated with 1.8 code - possibly we can delete all chunks that haven't been developed in so that we won't have to go as far to find the 1.8 good stuff?

I think we could "crop" the existing world to the smallest developed areas - but we can't simply erase all of the undeveloped areas, else we would have big gaping holes in the world. If UA is busy I wouldn't mind doing the work, I think I'll have some free time in the weekend. I would even try my hand at that "smoothing" tool they published in Reddit.

Even if we completely abandon the old biomes for the new ones (I don't think I would do that -- would probably start building more in the tundra, though) -- I think it is nice to keep the old buildings around for archiving purposes.

I'm not even sure how I'd go about doing that. I mean, I have a nice map and everything, but it's not entirely clear (to me) what goes where.

Basically we would need to do this:

0- Make a copy of the save directory.
1- Open this copy in a MC world edit program, and delete the areas we don´t want anymore.
2- Use the program that calculate the borders to calculate the borders of the old world
3- Visit these borders to generate 1.8 chunks there
4- Use the smoothing program to smooth the borders.
5- put the edited save back where the original one was.

Because of 2, you´d better send me the save (or a link to the save) before anyone goes a-exploring too much, so the borders can be calculated correctly (if we are going to do this, of course)

Well, Stone brick does not require more stone than regular smooth stone (4 smooth stone produce 4 stone bricks). And Clay is not rare anymore past 1.8. But these things won't be noticed by people who don't play minecraft, so other than that the poster is pretty awesome.

Maybe you could have some simple buildings in your background?

MME Wonderful! :-D
UT: Well, you can always use the slime finder to find slime chunks, and build a slime room around there... I managed to find a few that way.

Anyway... notch was thinking about making the default moon round. That cannot be! The square sun/moon is one of the most charming things in Minecraft!

He set up a pool for players to leave their opinions:

Slimes only spawn in certain chunks. The slime finder is a tool that, given the world seed and a set of coordinates, tell you which chunks will spawn slimes. So you just build a large, lit room under Y = 20 in these chunks, and eventually slimes will spawn there. It still takes a while, I suggest building a waiting room nearby, and trying to find 2-3 slime chunks near each other. Remember that no mob will spawn closer than 24 blocks from you.

I don't have the link with me right now, but if you google "minecraft slime finder" you should find it.

Minecraft 1.9 pre4!!!

I'm most excited about the enchantments. I was a bit skeptical about the experience, but this system of using the experience to power up breakable tools is great. The variety of enchantments is also really nice. Check out the "axe of silk touch" (when mining a block, gives you that exact block back -- glowstone, webs, redstone/lapis/diamond ore yay!)

Check the Minecraft wiki for basic recipes and hints. There is not a lot of "leveling up" or "equipment tiers" to climb, so in terms of power, you will be just in the same feet as everyone else.

Of course, how fast you learn to build cool structures depends entirely on your imagination :-) or maybe you are one of those exploring types! Feel free to ask questions in the thread.

Also, we will need your username for whitelisting in the thread.

- Release candidate 2 is out

Also, I have a server of my own that I use to experiment and mess about. It only has 6 slots, but if UA doesn't want to bother anymore we could use mine. Is your server in your home computer, or hosted somewhere? Well, I think with the rapid pre-release cycle, some people are opting to stay out of the servers until the release (I know I am). I think we are going to see an increased number of players after the 18th, so maybe it would be best to go with a hosted solution.

I'm indifferent to start a new world or keeping the old one. If UA has backups, we can put that to a vote.

If people want to discuss favorite seeds, someone in reddit did a large list of 1.9 maps with different seeds:

http://imgur.com/a/0XJi7

My favorite is the seed "numbat": http://i.imgur.com/mYH96.jpg
It has all sorts of biomes nearby, including a large ice biome, a large mushroom island (black), and a good-sized, but not exaggerated, ocean. Remember that the exact spawn point can be easily edited in the save file.

EDIT: Don't check the image if you are an explorer who doesn not want to be spoiled ;-)

Some info about the new world :-)

There is a welcome area in the spawn point. Right now it is just pretty, but not terribly useful.

Follow the stone road from the spawn point, and you will see the NPC village where we are building. If you want to be near everyone else, pick a place and start building :-) Or just go anywhere else and build.

If you build in the NPC village, we are making a series of underground tunnels connecting everyone´s houses around depth 45.6. Make sure to connect your house to the tunnel network, so you can use it as a escape route in case a creeper decides to park in front of your door!

Dog bowels :-P There is a lot to be done yet!

This is minecraft, anything ¨far¨ that people can get (diamonds, nether stuff, etc) can be gotten by anyone from scratch in 2-3 hours with not much problem. On the other hand, no one has yet built anything like the cool looking buildings we had on the previous server (the MME castle, the birdcage, etc, etc).

A few things that have not been done yet:
- nice roads for our city
- Mob farms
- castles and walls
- beacon towers
- Snow buildings

etc, etc.

Feel free to chat me up if you want more precise ideas of ¨things to do¨. :-)

Just used Rhinox Tunnel: It is awesome! Also, T-bone made a stairway from the spawn mountains to the town, for those who are too claustrophobic to use the tunnel. It is a nice place to snipe monsters :-)

We are now trying to fix the gravel roads in the NPC town -- if anyone has spare gravel, it would be most welcome!

We can't make it perfectly safe, unless we circle it with fences/walls and light everything inside, but we can improve the safety rate. Also, even if we don't have enough glowstone, we can spam torches as a temporary solution.

Also, if we add walls, don't worry about making them big enough for future houses. Medieval towns had circle of walls that were built as the town grew. Having "inner" and "outer" walls as people are added to the town would be fun :-)

Hmmmm, I volunteer for the initial walling effort, I'm inspired now :-D

Haven't been following up on the server as much as I would like to.
But I could select non-snow biome chunks. A tad more work, but doable.

And yes, ice regenerates.

Seems to be fine. Seed number is correct. Also, ice regenerates, so even if we already have the snow biome discovered (it is not that far from spawn), any thawn ice will recover pretty quickly.

Adding people in the whitelist above nao.

The ice is going away. It just needs some time, because either me or MME needs to mess with MCedit to clear the ice without screwing the world save :-)

Expect the ice to be gone today or tomorrow.

Hey guys, I have made a very basic webpage for our server:

http://claus.castelodelego.org/minecraft

Right now, the only really interesting thing is the server map, but I hope to add some statistics as well in the future.

Cheers!

Checking on the town earlier today, I noticed that there are still a few spots inside the wall that are not properly lighted. Since torches have light level 14, and the maximum level for monster spawning is 8, this means that any square more than 5 blocks of distance of any torch is actually not safe. So lets spam a few more torches around the village, and the monster appearances should be reduced.

Also, make sure to light your roofs (although I think most roofs are lighted up by now.

Demon, if you want to make a farm, how about sharing the one I'm building? I'm worried that TOO many mobs in the village might make things a bit laggy :-D Just put 4 sheep in each pen and then We'll sort out the colors!

But yeah, wheat works on cows, sheep, pigs and even chicken!

Sorry Maruchan, These two days have been crazy.

I have whitelisted:
- Spunkyox (maruchan)
- Scalebane (UntodTripod)

Let me know if you need anyone else whitelisted

============================

DH, if possible, only bring sheep to my barn. I know there are some cows there, but I'm planning to move those somewhere else in the near future (when I have time to finish the barn). My idea is to have 16 pens, one for each color of sheep, so we can accumulate colored wool without using dies.

Maybe we could start another barn for cows and pigs for meat? If so, it would be nice to make the cow/pig barn separate from the sheep barn, so that we don't have all the NPCs loaded at the same time. Although I'm not really sure exactly how much the animals stress the server, we should test it when the sheep barn is full.

Weird. I had added you from the console earlier today... it should have worked.

Anyway, I have added you again from inside the game. Unless the name I wrote in the post above has a typo, you should be whitelisted now.

End of stream == internet error, wait 5 min and try again (unless the server is down)
Invalid Server Key == server 1.0.0 bug, wait 1 minute (really) and try again.

The invalid Server Key bug has been fixed in 1.0.1 server (no need to update your client), but I have no idea if our hosting company has already updated the server yet or not. I expect them to update it this week.

I´m going out for the weekend! See you tuesday!

Maruchan, I really like your home! Thanks for the SS, I can't log in at the moment.

Also, maybe you have had your hunger question answered, but the server is on Normal difficulty. This means that, when hungry, you will lose hearts until you have only 5 hearts left. You wont lose more health than that, so you cant die of hunger.

Hey Maruchan,

The barn is supposed to be 2 stories high: 8 rooms x 2 stories = 16 rooms, one for each possible wool color.

* About the wall - we could build an outer ring to accommodate more people instead of removing and extending the wall. I think that would be totally awesome. (That´s how medieval towns evolved and stuff)
* About mobs getting in - Endermen can teleport. So if you see an endermen inside the wall, it won´t mean the wall has a hole in it.
* I´m kinda against tearing down the NPC houses. I´m okay with removing the NPC farms, we we build more somewhere else. Also, I think we can release the NPC from their cages, since we have a wall to contain them in!
* I will whitelist BV and scope as soon as I finish moving this week´s backups from the server to my personal computer (give me 20 minutes or so)

Oh, about the town barn... I think we can probably leave it as 1 story then, and leave the cows/pigs/sheep in. Mooshrooms are totally awesome. Did you know you can milk them for mushroom soup with a wooden bowl?

I´ll try to re-build the 16-pen sheep barn in a place away from the town, so it doesn´t affect server performance :-) I´ll let you know when finished!

Whitelisted Kalaydowscoop and BV310 - Also, I have updated the main map. It is now a cropped version focusing only on the city itself. The whole world map is 10Mb large. If you want it, just add a ¨-big¨ on the end of the filename (before the file extension).

Yeah, people need to differentiate between slow downs (low FPS/freezes) and lag (when you break a block and it reappears, mobs not responding to attacks, etc). They are two different issues - the first depends on your machine, the second on the server's machine/the connection between you and the server.

Maze III is REALLY hard, then I made the prize worth it. But don't go mad!

Ok, i lied, I'm not back yet, I'm on the airport waiting for my flight... I checked the options in the server website, and i can't find the option to remove the protection from the spawn zone.... I think I have to directly mess with the config files, and I won't be able to do that now. Give me 20 hours to go back home and I'll fix the spawn myself then (and spam a lot more torches).

As for the zombies attacking the town, is this because of zombie raids? A solution would be to slaughter the testificates (I think). That said, zombies are not as bad as creepers, so meh :-)

Rhinox, Fishy, thanks for the brave rescue of Izak! My new time zone makes me on only when everyone else is asleep... Anyway, tonight I will creative mode a stairwell from the town portal in the nether to the upper bedrock layer. Feel free to prettify it later! Or let me know if you want it in another location (give me the nether x,z coords)

In post 2223, izakthegoomba wrote:Uh, does anyone know the seed for our world? The debug screen says 0, but I know it's something different.

I'm pretty sure it is in this thread. I remember suggesting a number of different seeds. If I'm not mistaken, it is numbat. Also, I can give you a backup of the world save if you want.

Also, now that Bukkit is part of Mojang and releasing almost simultaneous candidate releases, I am planning to mess around with bukkit on our server either today, tomorrow, or this sunday (depending on how much free time I get). Maru, or anyone who has bukkit experience, can suggest a good tutorial? Also, if you have any mod suggestions, let me know -- just be aware that I prefer the server to be as vanilla as possible - I probably will only install admin mods (for allowing better logging, /sethome, mapping, etc), nothing that changes the gameplay itself.

Cheers!

lol.

They still don't even have a 1.2.3 Recommend and 1.2.4 is out.

Beta 0.2 the End is broken and kicks you from the server then throws you in the void if you try to go in it.

But isn't that Daddy's cheese fault, and not bukkit's? I think bukkit has released a RC for 1.2.3 for some days now, no?

Ok. So xalxeii asked me to give him "teleport" powers so that he could overview the race he is setting up this saturday. While checking out the Minecraft Control Panel, I found a way to give teleport powers to everyone (as in, teleport to other players, not teleport anywhere, vanilla MC does not support that).

So, I don't have anything against allowing anyone to teleport to anyone else. It might be an adequate substitute for /home until bukkit gets ready. So if no one has any serious objections to this, I will leave the command on. Opinions are welcome.

Notes:
0- To teleport to another player, type "#tep name of the player"
1- This command will be disabled for Xalxeii's race on the 31st (and other similar events)
2- Be considerate: if someone asks you NOT to teleport to them, for any reason, do not do so. I can check teleport use on the logs.

Cheers!

Maru: check the "commands" windows in the Minecraft control panel from daddycheese - you can set up a custom command using the "builtin:tp", and let it be used by all users (level guest or above)

Well, instead of taking it down, you can "make it a ruin", and build the open pen somewhere else.

Ok. Om of the Nom, you need to start acting like an adult or I'm gonna kick you from the server. Seriously. I'm tired of hearing you cursing and shouting at other players like that. Don't think I don't read the logs.

Also, for the record, that island is not yours. Tanstalas built there way before you joined the server. You got no claim to it, and if anyone decides to build there, as long as they don't mess with your buildings, that's totally fine with me.

"claims" to land are gentlemen agreements, and they are upheld by mutual respect, not abuse.

Well, the rule is very simple (for anyone who is interested): If you start or retaliate to PvP, I don't want to hear about it. Complains in thread will simply result in a ban of all involved.

If someone kills you, and you don't like it: don't retaliate, ask them to stop. If they don't, log off, and send me a PM.

Hey Guys,

In post 2438, Maruchan wrote:CraftBukkit Recommend Build 1.2.4-R1 (Build 2126) Released today. I will wait till all of out plugins have updated to this new Release Build (likely 1-2 weeks, more likely 1 week than 2), the new will update to 1.2.4

In post 2453, Maruchan wrote:@MME: I would usggest CraftBukkit now, along with this plugin:

http://dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/essentials/

when you download it it has a BUNCH of .jars, the only one I think you'll need/want is essentials.jar. It is drag/droppable with a basic default configuration setup that I think you'll like.

If you ever install any other plugin as well however, you'll want GroupManager.

Thanks for the heads up, Maru, I will take a look at it, probably Sunday or Friday!

In post 2460, Maruchan wrote:You have to open a ticket and request custom JAR access.

then you put it in the jar folfer and name it the same as oen of the other two jars.

Hmm, yeah, I'm not sure that I can open a ticket, I'll bugger MME about it on twitter.

In post 2513, Xalxe wrote:Claus, the #tep function is potentially borked.

I think I solved this online with you, but I had made a tepx function just for you, did you check the pm?

In post 2516, Maruchan wrote:Without Bukkit and Permissions, there is no way to limit JUST you to being able to use it.

It is not possible to restrict xalxe to using the command, but it is possible to build a command that just teleport Xalxe around, and no one else. For the purpose of the race, that was good enough, which is what I did :-)

In post 2540, JDGA wrote:>Still not whitelisted

Well, if I ISO you in this thread, you never posted before. Anyway, whitelisted now.

In post 2555, Xalxe wrote:Okay, who went on a fuckin' ocean voyage again? The map has a giant path of unnecessary ocean again.

I think that was my fault, I might have borked the map script. I'll fix it Friday or Sunday.

In post 2565, chesskid3 wrote:sure
but that was part of my point
the one we have is a decent xp farm and an amazing bone and arrow farm

I agree: just don't afk on it for TOOOOOO long, I have caught the server on 99% CPU use a few times. It would be useful if there was a bukkit plugin for autokicking a player after x hours of inactivity.

Cheers all!

Meh, I think it would be nice to have maru's server in the first post -- choice is good (vanilla or heavily modded?)

That said, UA is the only one who can actually change that post.

Thanks for the props on the MSTA :-P

I actually think the spawncity, as a whole, is pretty epic. UT's place (too bad he hasn't been around in a long while) and fishy's floating castle too..

There are also some pyramids that can be seen inside forests, -- I haven't been to those, but they seem pretty cool. And props to the creeper church.

That said, if we want to do megabuildings, there are still plenty of nice spots north of the town/UTs place. I've been kinda slacking off in my island resort, but there is a large holiday coming up next month, and I hope I can pick up the pace ^^

Hmmm, I personally prefer to leave constructions from previous players alone -- server history and stuff :-). Unless it is just something like a dirt hut or a tard tower, of course. One thing would be to build "around" those structures -- that sounds cool.

I haven't reset yet. I've promised myself to fix the sea leg map and put Maru's map online this weekend, so I might as well fix that too.

Also, I'm really sorry Izak, but the chance of me participating in the battle royale has dropped a bit -- there will be a welcome party for the new students sunday morning, so I'm not sure I can afford to stay up 3am+ :-( damn my weird timezone.

Server is back up. For some weird reason DaddyCheese's FTP is not accepting gobbling, and the "restore backup" command only overwrites the save, it does not delete the previous save, which could cause a REALLY big mess :-(

So I can't delete the old .mcr files to reduce the file size, and our map will still have that ugly sea leg. I tried to open a ticket, but I don't actually have an account with daddycheese itself, so I'll have to ask MME to do it.

On the bright side, I have reset the end. Have fun killing the dragon again.

So, the server is back up.... i wonder if bukkit + all the mob grinders is putting too much load on the server.

If you guys could add those wonderful, wonderful redstone lights to your grinders, and keep them lit when not using them, that might reduce the chance of the server crashing in a ball of flame! :-P

To be honest, chesskid, I have no idea why the server crashed. Sometimes the server will complain about "running out of memory"... it did that once or twice before bukkit, and now it seems to be doing that all the time, so I THINK the mob spawners might be the reason.

Does anyone else have big mobspawners around? I think there is one that is kinda abandoned in the swamp between town and my island.

Xalxe: I've considered it. Bukkit messes up with the nether folder, so it takes a tiny bit of work, so I won't do it right now... let me play a little bit more with it first.

What kind of gamer are you? Once I described minecraft for a friend, and he said "sounds boring". Other people love it. It is mostly a creative game. If you like building stuff and exploring as much or more as badassly stomping enemies to the ground, I think you're gonna enjoy it.

Also, I'm not sure it is the blaze farm that is causing the lag: since it is in the nether, I think its chunks are kept unloaded most of the time. Anyway if people go AFK near the blaze farm, please be nice enough to not do it for long periods.

About the lag, (this is something thread worthy, IMO), we can do one of three things:
- Remove Essentials/Bukkit : We lose /tpa and /home, but we were having no lag problems before installing bukkit, so this MIGHT solve the problem
OR one or more of the below
- People moving all/some farms away from spawn - we could set a policy of "No Farms whithin 500 blocks of 0,0".
- Configure Essentials to automatically kick anyone who AFKs for more than, say 15 minutes, 30 minutes?

Suggestions are welcome.

Well if we go the AFK-kick route, the self-rotating slide will have to go.

So does anyone has any arguents against the "x minutes AFK = kick" rule? Take into account our server is small, and is suffering from overload from the mob grinders.

Hey guys, exciting past few hours. The Serial Killer (Chesskid) targeted the server night one, which was also targeted by the doctor (backup script), so nothing changed. I guess the voting stage for this day will proceed quite quickly :-) Most recent backup was about 6 hours ago, give me some time to upload it.

Maru, I want to apologize to you for the last ban (which is undone), and not listening to you. That said, the rule (kill = ban) is still in place.
As for the other host, the person who is actually paying for this server is MME, so I need to talk to him about moving hosts, but he is kinda hard to reach recently.

TBQH, I'd love to actually have a server I could SSH to.... :-/

Let's hold the "how to reduce server lag" discussion to find out if the gunpowder farm was actually the reason for most of the lag or not.

Haschel, welcome to the server!

So, due to popular demand, the server is now in APOCALYPSE MODE!

Everyone creative, no rules. :-)

The 6hour ago backup is perfectly fine, I was just failing at restore :-) Server will be restored to lunacy when I get back from work (about 8 hours from now).

Have fun!

Yes, you have to ask people before doing PvP. When in doubt, assume other people are not interested in PvP.

Of course, be reasonable -- you will not get in trouble for one swing of a sword. But I would like people to err on the side of caution.

Well, Xalxexii, I like it Vanilla as you do, but to be honest, I usually make it an exception to teleportation functions.

That said, instead of just boring default warps, I had a much more interesting idea when going back home today... It is time for

The Warp Contest!

The idea is pretty simple: This is a building contest. Your goal is to build a warp platform!

I will choose the three best warp platforms, and make them actual warp points. The best platforms will be judge on construction, the place where the warp platform is built, and distance from the other chosen warps, in order of priority.

You may enter this contest in groups, and you may submit more than one entry. In other words: if more than one person want to build a warp in town, you might consider collaborating (or you can compete, both are fine to me :-)).

The deadline for the contest is one week from this post. Get your creative juices flowing! :-D

You're doing it wrong. It has to be REALLY close for it not to work.

Make a portal on the desert island, then go to the nether and make another portal at x/8, y/8, and it will work.

In post 4413, izakthegoomba wrote:
Claus, I'm making a public mineshaft later. Would that be warp-worthy? (bear in mind it will near or in town, but at bedrock level)

Go for it!

In post 4415, izakthegoomba wrote:...are there any really important places other than Vanilla Town and Skytown?

To be quite honest, it would be nice to have a portal in a more exotic location. The previous server had a really cool warp to a floating island in the middle of the ocean - you couldn't really build anything there, but it was good looking.

That sounds really awesome. Are X-ray packs forbidden? Also, I think you probably won't need to check with MC-edit, three strongholds are guaranteed to exist within 1000 blocks from 0,0.

But speaking of the End is there any chance we could stop resetting it at some point in the future? Enderman xp farms can have about 5 times the yield of blaze farms, but I don't want my work to get wiped out.

I actually only reset it when people ask me to.

BTW, have we found all three strongholds in the MS server? Or only two of them?

So, two things:

1- I made Izak and Xalxe ops in the server. Beware.

2- I don't really like the ability to "/back" after death - defeats the whole purpose of a "survival" server. Don't get too attached to that command, for it may go away soon.

EDIT: yeah, /back on death removed. /back on teleport should still be working. :-) Play safely, kids!

Uhhh you guys are taking this "shop" business too seriously. I strongly advise against it. Build shop buildings if you want, but don't expect any kind of trade to be officially enforced.

Izak - bringing testificates to town (or a conveniently placed prison) through train lines seems like a great idea for a project :-D

So, just to remind everyone, tomorrow is the deadline for the WARP CONTEST.

You have 24 more hours (give or take) to make candidate warp platforms for the server. PM me the coordinate of your platforms. I will choose 3, based on construction, location, and distance from the other platforms, and make them actual warp points in the server!

PM me your candidates. Cheers!

Hey Folks!

I have decided on the Winners of the WARP contest!

I got a bunch of submissions from izak, omnom, and UT (and a submission from korlash that met an untimely end in the hands of a creeper). In the end, I decided on 4 winners:

- spawntown warp: By Omnom -- a platform floating high over the ground. I really loved the idea of having and aerial view of the whole town
- skytown warp: By Izak -- another very frequented area of the server, I hope the portal will promote development of skytown
- junglefrontier: by UT -- I really liked the design and the position of this warp
- distantland: by Izak -- Izak found a really sweet spot with an amazing landscape, far, far from spawn. We should do some sort of collaborative project here, like a huge common villa or something.

Thanks everyone for playing! And each participant will also get a stack of chiseled stone!

On Vanilla minecraft, monsters de-spawn based on how long they have been inactive, and their distance from the player. Dig around the wiki and you will find the actual formula.

PE might have different rules, though.

Actually, I don't think that they de-spawn when the chunk is unloaded - they are removed from memory, but saved with the chunk (don't quote me on that though).
