“Excuse me! Halt!”

You hear an unfamiliar voice coming from the side of the road. Swerving your headlights in the direction of the voice, you make out the outline of a figure cloaked in black. Trying to get a better view, you switch off the windshield wipers momentarily.

“Who goes there?”

“Stop the car. I need to have a word with you.”

Curiosity gets the better of you. You roll down the passenger side window as you bring the old car to a halt by the curb.

The figure slowly approaches your car. Rain glitters in the beams of your headlights. The figure slides off her hood, revealing a young policewoman in uniform.

“There’s been a murder up at Hell’s Bottom. We’ve been ordered to stop all cars leaving the area.”

A few hours later, you’re in a room with 11 other suspects rounded up from around the county. By some grave mistake the police have been sent away to cook noodles in a noodle factory.

You have all been placed into a single large cell, and the door has been locked. Most of you are innocent – but some of you are cold blooded killers. Someone says that everyone should just wait until the police come back. Of course, everyone else disagrees.

Someone finds a rope strung between the bars of the cell. You decide to strangle one person each day until the killers have been eliminated.

Rules of the Game: (derived from Empking)

General Gameplay and Etiquette:

1. Respect each other. Intolerance will not be tolerated.
2. Play to your win condition.
3. Do not quote private Moderator-supplied information (either real or fabricated) of any kind. Paraphrasing (for role claims, etc.) is acceptable.
4. Do not communicate outside of the forum postings unless your role PM specifically allows it. Mafia members may communicate at night and during the confirmation stage.
3. If you have a role with a Night action your choices are due to me by the posted deadline. If I do not receive your choice via PM or bolded in the quick-topic provided by the posted deadline you will forfeit your actions.
4. Roles with Night actions will not be able to submit an action on Night 0 (i.e. during the confirmation stage).
5. Any player with a Night action may instead submit a “No Action” PM to let the Mod know that you do not want to perform your expected action that Night phase.
6. I reserve the right to make any changes to the rules at any time. My word is law.
7. Abusing exploits or loopholes will not be tolerated.

Voting, Deadlines, and Player Death:

1. A simple majority of all living members must agree on one person for a lynch to occur prior to deadline.
2. Once you have reached a simple majority no further unvoting will change someone’s fate.
3. Once a player is lynched the game enters twilight until I post a death scene; all players including the one who was lynched may continue to post during twilight.
4. Please submit votes as: Vote: PlayerName or VOTE: PlayerName. Votes will NOT be counted if they are not bold! Obvious abbreviations or nicknames will be counted so long as they are unambiguous.
5. Please submit vote revocations as either Unvote: PlayerName or Unvote. Unvotes are not required, but are helpful.
6. You may Vote: No Lynch - a simple majority of these vote types are required to send the game to Night phase without a lynch.
7. This game will have 3 week deadlines. At deadline, if there is not a simple majority of votes there will be No Lynch.
8. I will post votecounts as often as possible, at least once a day (excluding possible holidays).
9. Deadlines may be extended to account for holidays.

Miscellaneous/Mechanics:

1. Purple is my color. Using purple will count as impersonating the mod.
2. No hidden text or cryptography.
3. If you have an issue/problem with the game, please PM me privately. Do not post issues/complaints in the game thread.
4. I may make mistakes - please point out any mistakes gently. Mistakes will be corrected where possible, but sometimes mistakes are made that cannot be reversed. These will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game.
5. Please bold all requests to the Mod so that they don’t get missed.
6. Prods of missing players will be issued automatically after 72 hours of no activity or upon request after 48 hours of no activity. A prodded player has 48 hours to respond or risks replacement. A player who has been prodded 3 times is subject to replacement without further notice.
7. Rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, up to and including a Modkill.
8. If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period please post a notice to that effect in the thread.
9. If you think you may need to be replaced, notify me as soon as possible.

Remember, this is a normal setup, so there are at least 2 mafia members and one vanilla townie. Here is a sample Role PM:

Slowly, you place the cord over her neck. She looks uncomfortable - but after all, any killer in her situation would. And you are sure she is a killer.

You look on in disappointment. You've chosen to strangle a strange looking boy with blue eyes, who has definitely been acting suspicious as of late, but at times you wish perhaps you had chosen the drunk guy doing the strangling. He belches loudly and proceeds with his business.

"I thin' he'll look real nice hanging from the rafters, dontcha?"

The cord has been artfully tied around one of the exposed roof beams running lengthwise across the cell. The drunk man heaves the young boy upwards and brings the noose around his neck.

"This'll be a much betta way of killin him, dontcha think?"

The man lets go. For a moment the boy is suspended in the air, unable to breathe as the rope bears down on his windpipe. Suddenly the knot fails. The rope rapidly unwinds, its many coils loosening from the wooden beam and sending the boy falling downwards towards the floor. He strikes the ground with a thud, and moves no more.

Did I forget to mention the stylish jail has a high ceiling?

It seems like eternity before you can go to sleep. At the slightest noise you are instantly alert and on guard - and you're sure it's the same for everyone. But finally the power of exhaustion takes its toll on your mind, and your perceptions begin to numb and die down.

You have a dream. You are driving along the road in your convertible, cool wind of the desolate highway streaming into your face. In the distance is a city, barely peeking over the horizon, and for a moment you swear you could have heard the honking of horns right beside you. The sun sets slowly, casting a red glaze over the black asphalt and your dashboard. Relaxing, you lean backwards into your chair and tune the radio onto your favorite station. But all you hear is static. And as you bend forward to check if you are tuned to the right frequency, you catch a glimpse of the pavement and suddenly something strikes you. You've come to a grim realization: your car isn't moving.

You jam your foot on the accelerator, but your efforts are in vain. You are chained, forever chained, to Hell's Bottom.

These were the images that were in your mind as you woke up to the noise in the middle of the night. But what you saw was perhaps even more terrifying. Everyone was crowded around a corpse on the floor, a man who had just 3 hours ago been breathing and alive.

This time you are sure that you have the mafia at your mercy. Desperado is surely one of them, right?

You pull the cord tightly around his neck, holding him still as a fellow inmate delivers a mind-shattering roundhouse kick to Desperado's head. He slumps backwards, forcing you to readjust your position, and mumbles something under his breath.

Another kick, followed by a punch, connects with his face. You sense a feeling of defeat within the dying man. Encouraged, you pull harder, savoring the helpless look in his eyes. For once, you are in control, not them - and you relish your new power.

Suddenly, Desperado pulls out a tiny pistol, hidden in his pocket, and aims it toward you. You extend a hand, attempting to intercept the weapon, but it still fires with a crack. The bullet, however, doesn't enter its intended target, instead lodging inside Desperado's cranium. You loosen your hold on the rope as you notice he has stopped breathing.

Some people clearly thought it wasn't enough, though. Just to be sure, they start beating the lifeless corpse and eventually hang him from the rafters, just to "make sure" he wasn't alive anymore.

, you think to yourself as you go to bed. For once, you fall asleep almost immediately - not out of will, but out of sheer exhaustion. The day's events had for once taken a favorable turn, but it had taxed your mind and body thoroughly.

The night passes silently. You awake to find everything just as you left it the previous night, save one horrific replacement.

It's not Desperado that hangs from the ceiling now, but qwints.

Unlike previous days, today's flavor will only be related from the perspective of one person. By the end of the story, it should be clear who this person is.

"It's time."

She struggles against her bonds, a desperate plea escaping from behind the gag. She claims that she isn't mafia - but after four days of deception who is to believe her now?

He aligns the shotgun with her forehead.

"Any last words, princess?"

The roar is deafening. Suddenly you have a feeling... a feeling you may have been wrong. Her eyes meet yours, the innocence, the injustice, crying to be heard. A single tear escapes before her eyes close at last, never to see the world again.

Were you wrong? That is the thought that plagues you as you lay down for another night.

Then you hear it - a small clicking sound. Feigning sleep, you gradually turn your head toward the source of the sound. You open your eyes an unnoticeable sliver and see a sight that almost makes your blood freeze.

It is unmistakable. A Beretta 501, a guaranteed one shot kill. She holds it as if she is ready to load in a final bullet - perhaps one intended for you. Taking a quick glance to make sure everyone else is sleeping, she then moves over to her bag, hiding the rifle momentarily behind her figure. Wondering what you should do, a cold sweat breaks on your back and you begin to itch uncontrollably.

But wait, what the hell is she doing? As she turns around, the rifle is gone.

It must have gone into her bag,

you reason. Perhaps it wasn't meant to kill me?

Relaxing, you casually move your arm up to get that itch. She seems at once alert, and you pause your hand midway. A look of genuine shock suddenly creeps into her face as she stares at some unseen threat behind you, a look so incredibly real that you open your eyes and whirl around.

The last thing you see is the blade of a hatchet sweeping in an arc through the air... straight into your neck.

The police returned from the noodle factory to find two people left in the cell. The policewoman was confused - after all, she could have sworn she had brought twelve in to begin with.

Troubled, the police searched the rest of the cell meticulously, but no trace of the other ten was found.

The remaining two suspects were interrogated, and circumstantial evidence proved sufficient to convict them of the murder at Hell's Bottom. One of them was sentenced for life, while the other one received 20 years.

The news report was fairly short and to the point. There was no mention of the other ten suspects, and for years afterwards the case at Hell's Bottom was forgotten.

There was only one loose end to be tied up. That was the third murderer rumored to be involved in the initial killing. The countryside stood sentinel for ten long years, but the last killer never surfaced ever again. It was reasoned that he must have been killed in some accident sometime or another or gone into permanent hiding.

14 years after the case was first brought up, a constable at the Hell's County Jail made a startling discovery. While renovating the cracked floor of one of the cells, the constable found that one of the massive concrete slabs that made up the floor was surprisingly loose. With the help of some other policemen, the slab was eventually lifted.

At first they thought it might have been an Indian burial site, but it quickly became obvious the bodies had been placed after and not before the jail had been built. Investigators compiled the following list of peculiarities:

Pistol and ammunition found by body 5
Beretta 501 sniper rifle in arms of body 2
Haverton Detective Agency badge near chest area of body 4

It was eventually concluded that body 4 was a well known detective who had been reported missing 14 years ago named qwints; body 2 was a retired military veteran who lived alone in the countryside known as Elyse.

It took weeks to identify body 5, but eventually one of the investigators, noticing both Elyse and qwints had been reported missing 14 years ago, found out about the murder at Hell's Bottom. The description of body 5 and the description of the pistol exactly matched those of the long sought after third suspect in the murder.

Interested in the specifics of these additional deaths, the investigators later asked the two remaining murderers to relate what had happened during those 4 days. The account which we have today has been pieced together from conversations with Mr. Flay and YOLO.

Now first off I'd like to apologize for making some moderator mistakes throughout the game. If you didn't know, this is the very first game that I have modded, so I pretty much knew I was going to make at least some errors.

Now about the game itself, many of you will probably debate how balanced the setup is (cough Rainbowdash), and I'm open to comments like about balance. The review mods were "happy to approve this", but I'd like to hear your feedback as well.

Specifically:

1. How was the game experience in general?

2. What can I, as a moderator, improve on?

3. How balanced was the game? How could the setup be made better?

I will admit now that the setup is fairly imbalanced. My original setup had an additional town role (first a doctor, then a jailkeeper) but during the review this was scrapped for additional townies (the setup was originally for 11-p).
