I think it's just a regular tournament but with the understanding that everyone playing is terribleish.

So DRK & I just did some 2v2 for a couple hours. We were on a six game winstreak at one point, then we got VOID RAY'd like two games in a row.

Well, to be fair, it's another full-length campaign (the same size as Wings of Liberty), plus a bunch of multiplayer mods with new ladders for the new units and buildings (lurkers, apparently). I don't mind paying full price for it, especially since we won't even see it until Q1/Q2 2012.

PS, I'm having a racial crisis. I can't decide if I want to keep playing Terran, but there are things I hate about each race that I'm not sure I can overcome:

Terran: Siege tanks. I fucking hate using them, and I hate playing against them.
Protoss: The whole mechanic behind warp-ins is odd and unfamiliar. It feels like having a third arm or something.
Zerg: Balancing drone production with army production.

will probably be in the solo campaign

But whether we put them in multi, it really depends on a number of factors.

The reason we pulled the Lurker from multi was that they were simply just weren’t useful at the end of the day. Like, the reality was that so many units had taken over his combat role as we went forward – infesters, roaches and banelings all were doing things better than the Lurker was doing at the time and we found that we just weren’t building them in games really all that much

We were so in love with the unit that we kept it way past its prime like it was sitting way at the very end of the tech tree. It was like an artillery unit now and it was doing all this crazy stuff and it was not really even a Lurker anymore.

It didn’t really make sense but that’s what the unit had become and it was just a desperate attempt to hold on to it and as we looked at it this was not a unit the game needed. The Lurker was not actually doing what it used to do and the game had changed too much for this unit to have the same core role.

I do know there was a big outcry from certain players; not specifically for that unit although they’ll sometimes say that. Although

is that they wish they had more ways to use cloak or burrow specifically as a threat to enemies and they feel they have lost that with the Lurker. I think that is a fair feedback from our players that is something we will definitely look to address in the expansion

With KoC out, we could do the rest of us in a 5-player double elimination tournament. Would you be down for that? If so, I'll set up the brackets and we'll start working out the dates and times.

@JD, with Moratorium in, a six-player double-elimination tournament works just fine.

First two games are played

Even easier (conceptually, not as much for the players) would be a round robin where the top 4 move on to single elim. Plus, more games = more casting = more fun for everyone.

Is this going to be at a set time (like some weekend afternoon or something), or just pairings where the two involved need to settle on a time to play each other and report their results?

I would say we'd give ranged deadlines for rounds to be completed (like 3 days per round) and then let the competitors set up specific times to play. Are we going to do Best of 3 or just 1 win for the round robin?

I can vaguely determine what kind of builds people are going for or what they'll be focusing on but I have no clue how to counter each one yet.

Play around with all three races to see which one you like the most. I would recommend learning the absolute basics of each one and then playing about 5-10 custom games as each race against the AI to get a feel for them. I can tell you this much:

Terran are the most straight-forward. They feel the most "RTS"y of the three races. A lot of their strength comes from brute ground-force power... in the air, they aren't so great. Another feature special to Terran is some of their buildings have the ability to lift-off and move... so if you want to expand with another Command Center, you can just build it in your base then fly it to wherever you want when it's complete. Terran also start out with 11 supply instead of 10 like the other two races.

Protoss are a lot of fun. Warp technology is important in Protoss strategy. Building warp gates allows you to warp in ground forces anywhere on the map that there's a Pylon (Protoss energy structure). Stalkers can research "blink", an upgrade that lets your stalkers blink a few yards ahead to anywhere on the map. So if an opponent's base is walled off, you can just blink past it, or blink up the cliff, or something. Oh, and Protoss worker units "warp in" structures... so all you have to do is click to drop it, they warp it in, then you can go back to doing something else while the warp-in completes, which means you don't have units wrapped up in building stuff all the time.

Zerg are the most unique of the three. Rather than having specific structures to produce specific units, all of your units are spawned from larvae which are generated at your hatchery. When new larvae hatches, you choose whether or morph them into worker units or military units. Furthermore, your drones morph into the buildings you need, so when you build a building, you lose a worker. The only purpose of buildings, as Zerg, is to upgrade units or unlock new units. All the production is done by the hatchery. Zerg is also a lot more reactionary than the other races, so you have to kind of get a feel for what they're doing first before you start going for a certain strategy.


Overall, I'm most comfortable with Terran, I have the most fun with Protoss, and I'm very challenged by Zerg and would like to learn more.

Did monobattles with JD & peg last night. Twas fun. Things I learned:

Good - mass Phoenixes, Banshees, and Void Rays
Bad - mass Marines, Hellions, and Void Rays

That second one could also be because JD decided he only needed to have four Hellions

Well to be fair, JD's base got raped by an early stalker rush, and I had to give up a lot of marines there.
And now that I think about it, it was Marines + Hellions + Carriers. So yeah we were screwed even with my 150 marines.

I prefer a wired keyboard/mouse, that's all I know. The biggest problem with my current keyboard, I think, is that it feels too wide... having to reach to Ctrl+# to set control groups is a stretch for my finger, not to mention I feel like the gap from the left half the keyboard (where my left hand usually is) over to my mouse (where my right hand usually is) is way too wide.

I'm currently trying to learn to play protoss. If it goes well enough, I'll probably try terran too so I can random (I don't actually expect it to go that well though...), but at the very least I want to be able to play protoss at a comparable level to that at which I play zerg. Also, Terran has a lot less complexities, IMO, which makes it easier to make decisions on the fly. The only thing I have trouble with as Terran is knowing what I should be building out of my factories (if anything). Siege Tanks are good defensively but other than that, I don't build much mech.
