Welcome to Planet: Mafiascum 2, based on the original by izakthegoomba. Again everyone gets put in charge of a country and do whatever they want with it, leading theirs and others' to glory or destruction.

This time the game will be a lot more structured in the background and somewhat more structured in the while still allowing everyone to do whatever they want.

The rules

The world:

The continent is divided in five regions similar to PMS1, each region has 4 players for a total of 20. Each region has a primary resource and each player chooses a secondary resource for their country. Apart from that all regions are identical.
The resources are oil, iron, gas, rare earth metals and minerals, all are equivalent.

All countries should also have a description of their government/culture, this has some effect on how your actions affect your approval rating and the effect of low approval.

A submission should contain this:
Country name
Region (from the list in the next post)
Secondary resource (oil/iron/gas/rare earths/minerals, different from your region's primary resource)
A short description of the government of your country.
Optional: Anything else you want people to know about your country.

Turns:

There is one turn a week which correspond to ~3 months of in game time, each turn players get income and population growth and their spending is processed. The time between turns works on narrative time, so any response to a situation is assumed to be in a timely manner.

Spending:

Players can spend their money on:
Soldiers/reservists/draftees
Fortification
Resources
Technology
Anything else you want

Everything in the ‘anything else you want’ category is translated to whatever is most applicable when appropriate.
There are the following 'technologies':
Infrastructure (does a bit of everything)
Education (makes spending on other tech more efficient)
Industry (improves income)
Healthcare (improves population growth)
Military (better soldiers)
Intelligence (better chance of protecting/finding out secrets)

War and Combat

At any point in time a country can shift to war footing, this has several effects on it.
At peace you can recruit soldiers and reservists for 100.000/50.000 each. Soldiers are better at combat but more expensive at 10.000 upkeep, while reservists have 4.000 upkeep. Draftees can not be recruited at all.
In a peace economy you can attack other players, but only with soldiers, reservists can only defend.

In a war economy you can also recruit draftees (50.000 training/4.000 upkeep), they'll disband when you go back to a peace economy. Soldier and reservist upkeep will also increase to 15.000 each. You can attack with reservists and draftees in addition to soldiers. When at war your army will also accumulate 'experience' (a combination of everything that makes things run smoother while preparing for and fighting a war) which makes them more effective in combat. You will not be able to improve your fortification level. The fortification you have will also degrade faster as will your economy.

Any actions you take in preparation or in a war reflects on your approval, so if you just want to kill things at least spend some money on propaganda and/or fabricating evidence of your opponent's wickedness.

Each attack by a player on another creates a separate war, the factors that determine both sides losses are:
1. The amount and type of combatants on each side
2. The military tech on both sides
3. The soldier xp on both sides
4. The fortification level on the defender's side
5. A role playing factor depending on whether one or both sides do something sufficiently intelligent/stupid/random.

If both forces are exactly equal in strength both will lose 10% of their combatants each turn.

If multiple players are fighting against a single player the defender splits their forces to fight each separately.

As a general rule: Soldiers are strongest per unit and most versatile. Reservists are less versatile, but cheaper and more cost effective if you're at peace. Draftees are weaker still, but they are a cheap way to field an army (using them is unpopular though).

Espionage

Intelligence tech affects both intelligence and counter-intelligence, if it's high you'll get to know a lot about your opponents' secret plans and they don't get to find out about yours. Every secret project has a chance to be found out each turn by other players or the public. The chance of this is determined by your tech level, their tech level and the size of the project.

Inflation

There is a form of inflation in the game, for one if a techlevel is high, it will cost more to upgrade it further, besides that, tech, economy, resource reserves and fortification degrade over time. For the most part, costs will not increase, but income and other things will decrease if not maintained.
If you suddenly find yourself earning less than last turn or your population growing slower that is probably the cause.

The mods and events

This game is run by me (inspiratieloos) and JDGA, if you want to take an action in secret or want to ask something without others knowing send a PM to both of us. Based on advice from izak, if you want some kind of event to happen or an epic speech spoken you get to write it yourself. If it involves something significant happening, tell us what you want to happen, then we'll tell you how good/bad it goes and fill in any numbers, you get to write the story of how things got to that conclusion.

Any out of thread communication between active players is allowed, quoting mods' or other players' PMs isn't, paraphrasing is allowed. You are allowed to lie about communications, but this will create a covert project to keep the truth hidden (in case of falsely paraphrasing another player you must inform the mods of the lie).

The planet you all find yourself on is called Gazebo, it is dominated by a single large continent (also called Gazebo)which itself is divided into several regions[1]. It is the third out of six planets of the local star, from what astronomers have been able to gather both the second planet (Mig) and fourth planet (Ileitis) might be habitable, although not comfortably for humans. No one knows if there is (intelligent) life on these planets.

Eyato

Eyato has a fairly mild climate, it has a lot of farm- and grassland and some large forests. It’s main export is natural gas.

Iruildona

Iruildona’s nature is fairly inhospitable, with large rainforests and flatlands. It does however have large quantities of high quality iron ore.

Antubela

Antubela is the region closest to the equator and thus the warmest. It has by far the largest oil reserves of any region.

Udos

Udos, the easternmost region, is by far the largest, although a lot of it is unable to be built upon. The mountains there contain the only large deposits of several rare earth metals.

Oekkezia

Oekkezia is a very large peninsula connected to Gazebo. The people there are hardened from encounters with the local wildlife[2]. The ground contains large amounts of minerals not found anywhere else.

Mechanica Terram ruled over by the Grey Party (Led by Ben Roberts, 45). This however, only applies to 7% of the country area, known as The Central. The other 93% of the country (Greenland) to be explained later, is granted semi-autonomy. The government still controls defense spending and will supply some money too keep them satisfied and all.

The area where this country resides was mostly uninhabited until the late 17th century, when people started migrating here to escape the more densely populated areas in neighboring areas. Eventually, more and more people came, and they decided to make a government and all, and the country was founded as "Grassland". The country stayed relatively peaceful.

In the 1990s, the country experienced a huge Technological Revolution, which happened so quickly that many people were confused and unwilling to conform with their new way of life. Eventually, many people resisted. This caused a 5 year civil war from 1996-2001, where finally Ben Roberts, leader of the ruling Grey Party, managed to suppress the uprising. Being a not-so-evil ruler, he decided to keep most of the resisting forces under his control, but semi-autonomously, only controlling defence (well, don't want that part of the area to defect to other countries, right?), nearly existing as a separate, peaceful country but the party remains the right to withdraw it's autonomy. This area, now called "Greenland", consists of mostly rural areas, with only 1 notable city, the so-called state capital Westfield, and consists of the aforementioned 93% of the city area. This area is also constantly mined for it's natural gas and rare earths to be used or exported. the remaining area, known as the Central, is encircled by a huge glass dome (citizens are free to move in and out of the city though, and is significantly more technologically advanced than the rest of the country. (Obviously, the airport resides just outside it, how is it gonna hit the dome?). The Grey Party headquarters, the Government House, City Hall and basically everything you can find in a modern city is in there. These 2 areas try to live in harmony as far as possible, with the government trying to keep both areas happy.

After the civil war, the country was determined to never let a war take place in the country again. The government has decided to pump more money in defense (although it claims it will stay neutral in any war), and will not attack unless provoked.

There is no nobility in Amyr (except the monarch). Instead representatives are elected by the people as a form of simple government.
Amyr is the empire where there is no prejudice against any minority and it was achieved through education.
The citizens of Amyr are open-minded to all life style choices as long as no one is harmed. In fact the only punishable offence in Amyr is when you intentionally cause harm to another. Amyr will go to war with any country where people are getting oppressed.

The elite hold secret meetings to determine new policies. New people may be voted into the oligarchy by the oligarchy, and the oligarchy is generally filled with the smartest citizens of Orthel, regardless of political stance. When the oligarchy creates a new policy, they hold a conference to announce the policy. Although it's not a democracy, the people of the country are treated as fair as possible. The economy somewhat resembles capitalism, but the oligarchy may take control if necessary. Culture is fairly high. Art, music, and literature is created often.

The people of Swizzerland (who prefer to go by "dorfs", as per their native language) are devout adherents to Armok, the God of Blood, so much so that they refer to themselves in the collective as the "Slaves to Armok."

Despite this, they're not an overly warlike people, being content over the years to toil endlessly in their own fortresses (huge, sprawling underground cities). This is due in equal measures to the strong work ethic inherent in the dorf culture, as well as the fact that advancement in the society is based almost entirely upon skill -- the more skilled one is, the better their life, so that the few legendary dorfs, undisputed masters of their craft, essentially want for nothing.

Although they make exception for trading and diplomacy, on the whole the dorfs are isolationist and tend not to travel, preferring that others come to them. Their rules are arcane and lengthy, nearly incomprehensible to outsiders. Individual dorfs can (and will) be punished for failing to meet bizarre (or even impossible) goals, and by far the most common punishment is to be beaten soundly with a very large hammer. Still, it is the way of Armok, and thus accepted by all as the way things are.

The dorfs are happy to trade almost anything with anyone, and always on the lookout for ways to improve the quality of their work or otherwise better themselves. Travellers to Swizzerland talk of the giant monuments built in the middle of nowhere, huge faces carved into cliffs, and mounds and mounds of discarded items carved from rock, all testaments to both the Word of Armok and the dorf work ethic. Less thrilling to the rest of the world, perhaps, is the recent interest of dorf scientists in using magma and other forms of vulcanism as a power source.

The country is run by a group of five leaders: the Economic Leader, the Foreign Affairs Leader, the War Leader, the Justice Leader, and the Leader of the People. Each person has powers over what they are Leader of, but the other four can veto anything one leader says if the four vote unanimously against it. One term is five years, and the leaders are chosen by popular vote. A leader can only spend a total of two terms as leader. A Leader must have a replacement ready at all times in the event of the Leader's death.

The government lies in the hands of 13 members, that make up the Council of the People. Each councillor serves for life. Their identities are held absolutely secret- even from each other. Each councillor chooses their own replacement in case of their death. Each are also responsible for grooming and training of their replacements. They meet in a undisclosed location, in which they wear masks and cloaks at all times. The council decides policy through majority vote. The policy is carried out by the Chancellors- a larger group of bureaucrats and politicians chosen by the Council of the People. Furthermore- the Chancellors elect a High Chancellor amongst their number to be the public face of the country, and to handle any diplomatic relationships with other countries. (This information is entirely known to the people, via the Council Proclamation of 1453 A.U. ) The country is mostly focused on medical and technological advancements. There were several civil wars, brutal and bloody affairs, before the Council of the People rose to unify policy and provide a firm governing body. One of the current mandates of the council is to avoid any loss of life through unnecessary internal conflicts. Topos' capital is Honeypolis- a sleepless city taking up one fourth of the total surface area of the country. Honeypolis is the center of technological innovation and commerce. The second largest city is Thranid, on the eponymous Thranid Mountain Range. This city is entirely made up of miners and their families, and assorted essential personnel that provide services that is indispensable. These miners are absolutely proud to be miners, for they know that what they mine is what allows Honeypolis to be the center of the world in technological innovations. The people (referred to as Toposians) has their own calendar system, counting from the date Topos became unified. The current year is 1576 A.U. The economy is in essence a capitalist system, but the Council, and by extension, the Chancellors are known to invest large sums of money into the country's 3 biggest corporations. They are the Evir Aduso TechnoCorp (EAT), the Thranid Mining Conglomerate (TMC) and the Ballardos Medical Technologies (BMT). Education is a way of life in Topos. Everyone under the age of 28 must be either enrolled in school, or working for one of the big three corporations. The dominant religion is Lux Semitam, which arrived in the year 1421 A.U.

A northern country with a harsh climate, Mæristo Lux was originally isolated from many of the other civilized countries of Gazebo. It is an old country, steeped in customs dating back to pre-civilized culture, most noticeably in the famous state religion “Lux Semitam”, or the “Path of Light”. Much of the country’s names and customs relating to its religion focus on light, which is only natural since Lumine is one of the northernmost cities in the world. Technology-wise, they are more focused on medicine and fabrication, and they are the headquarters of a multinational corporation focused on the same.

No tobacco, weed, marijuana, any other illegal substance shall be brought into the cathedrals, schools, other public buildings. Residences are private buildings, and are thus, up to the owners of said residences.

Schools are to be in session between the autumn months and the end of the spring months. 6 days a week, for no more than 6 hours per weekday, 4 hours per Saturday.

The only penalty for rape, all kinds, is public hanging.

The Holy Empire of Mhork is an old nation founded long ago by the prophet Ma'Krah who gave his followers hope in harsh times of drought, disease, and famine by saying that the Holy Creator, Mhork Himself was looking after them. Within a few months they happened across a sort of oasis in the mountains with flatlands and a beautiful waterfall that is still incorporated in the architecture of the Capital Cathedral today. That was the site of the Capital City, still the Capital of the Holy Empire today.

The Holy Empire is a vast nation holding huge swaths of land, not all of it used, but all of it claimed in the name of the Holy Creator. There were many periods of war and annexing of different nomadic villages and heathen tribes, but they were all safely assimilated into Mhork culture. However there have been several hundred years without expansion, as all the land on the Udos region had been claimed. While vast, Mhork is not necessarily heavily populated. It has many areas of dense urban concentration, but it is not universally heavily populated.

Religion is the cornerstone of Mhork life. Every citizen is baptized into the fold at birth, and Mhorkism is at the focus of every birthday (a celebration of existence), wedding (a celebration of union), birth (a celebration of life), and death (a celebration of Mhork taking back what was always his). In addition there are several national holidays for the various past reformers and historical festivals such as the Harvest. On these days of celebration, the populace ceases working for a day of contemplation and of partying. The tenants of Mhorkism are outlined in the sacred Book of Mhork which is owned by every follower, or at least every household. It gives several life philosophies as well as general rules for living life according to Mhork's will, along with many scholarly theological opinions on what each passage means. The general rules include "Love thy Mhorkish brethren," "Seek always to convert thy neighbor into the fold," and a bunch of passages giving general rules of ethics like "Don't kill each other," etc. In addition, followers offer tithes in order to support their local churches, with a part of it going back to the Capital Cathedral.

The nation is lead by a single leader, The Holy Lord of Mhork. He is similar to the Pope in that he has the ultimate decision when reading and attempting to understand the Book of Mhork and that he is the moral example for all Mhorkans to aspire to. While he has the ultimate say, using such an Act of Papal Decree is very rare and typically results in a great deal of controversy. He also is the ultimate Judge on matters of Heresy (punishable by death) and Treason (punishable by death or imprisonment) and the decider of how the penalty shall be conducted. [It is of note that the prisons in Mhork are especially harsh as they all are built into higher mountains and the penalty is typically to dig up the precious metal deposits within until either death or release.]

Lord of Mhork is a sacred title and one that has been with the Holy Empire since its birth. Once an older Lord of Mhork has reached his age of retirement [decreed as 55 years of age though there is a movement to try and raise it to 60], the youth he has been training takes over. He begins training a youth [typically an orphan or a child given to the Clergy from birth] when he is 40 and the youth is 10 in studies of the Book of Mhork and in general leadership principles, history, and foreign policy. The youth then takes over when the former Lord of Mhork reaches his 55th birthday. It becomes a day of celebration and inauguration where the youth then relinquishes his entire former identity, if there was much of one to begin with, and becomes the newest Lord of Mhork.

While the Lord of Mhork is the official leader on all matters of Mhork religion and government, most of the laws and day-to-day matters are handles by the Houses of the Clergy and the Electorate. Similar to the Senate and House of Representatives, they both must agree to a law through a fierce series of discussions, debates, and votes. It is a bit slow and there is a ton of red tape that guides the process, but it's a system that is shown historically to work well and in the best interest of the nation. The House of Clergy is composed of bishops, cardinals, and other religious leaders chosen to represent each region in the Holy Empire.
In addition, each foreign nation who recognizes Mhorkism as their national religion are permitted to send a single religious leader to observe the business handles between the House of Clergy and the House of the Electorate.
This leader can also double as Ambassador to Mhork. The House of the Electorate is composed of nonclergymen and roughly outnumbers the House of Clergy by 3 or 4 to one. It is composed of a representative chosen by the clergyman in charge of the region to represent each of the subregions.

The Capital Cathedral is a beautiful city with gorgeous, stunning architecture built around the various natural formations. All other cities and towns in Mhork seek to emulate this city of splendor, thus the architecture in Mhork is one of the best in the world. Citizens also love fine jewelry and trying to stay at the peek of fashion. This includes fine clothing; though Mhork is a very cold nation, many citizens enjoy showing slight skin as a sign of status. Overall Mhork is a very pretty, very fashionable nation.

Spoiler: Laws
As has been the case for many years, all education remains public. No private schools have been approved for operation.
Theological instruction remains an integral part of the school curriculum.
All students are required to be involved in either a school sport or other extra curricular activity.
Schooling remains year long with intermittent breaks.

The Capital Cathedral is strictly off limits to any non-Mhorkish personnel. The aforementioned 'Capital Cathedral' refers to the entirety of the Holy Empire's capital, and this law has been tradition for many years. Any attempt to circumvent this law will be met with harsh penalty, up to and including charges of Treason and Heresy.

Heresy and Treason are both punishable by death, with the latter also having a possible penalty of life imprisonment. The Lord of Mhork is the final arbiter in these charges, as well as the decider of penalty.

The capital city of Arz Centaria is Zentrum, which is placed roughly in the middle of the country and has a population of 4.75 million. Arz Centaria is a democracy, a representative is elected once every 12 years and has no limits on how often a leader may hold office. The common people view their government as strict but fair. The governments current interests are establishing trade routes and forming diplomatic relations with its neighbors.

Does this game need a win condition?

Being the last man standing is probably the only 'absolute' wincon, apart from that it really depends on what happens.

On regions: There are several reasons they're all identical, background complexity, balancing and lack of creativity being the most important ones.

On tech: It's supposed to be a bit ambiguous. Think roughly modern day without nukes (because people researching nukes -> drama :lol: ).

Also, how does the fact that this takes place X time after P:MS1 have any influence on the technological development of two planets that are on different ends of the galaxy? :roll:

The continent is a pangaea, there are no significant landmasses other then the continent you're on. You can try to colonize space though.

Ooc/Word of God: Both the other named planets in the solar system are inhabitable enough to build a self sustaining colony, no guarantees though (read: probably not) that this colony will be able to to recoup the cost of getting it there in the first place during the course of the game. You don't actually know this in character.

He was soon subdued and Sopheria suffered no actual injuries.


In Fallen Tragedy 1 man was imprisoned.

Death and Taxes


Several days ago both the governments of Orthel and Arrakis announced an increase in taxes for their citizens. This was not generally received well, with people feeling that they are being made to pay more than their neighbours, the people in Orthel are willing to see what the government will do with their money before passing judgement, but they are watching the oligarchy with suspicion.


Tax increase in Orthel is expected to increase the government's income by 2B per season at this point, government approval rating is reduced by 20.


In Arrakis however, the further announcement that the government would adopt Mhorkism as the official state religion and that the planned tax increase would only be levied on those who don't follow the religion has met with much more stiff resistance. Both unbelievers and moderate Mhorkists are afraid that Arrakis adopting the religion and the new tax measure are only a first step in more fully adopting the Mhorkist ways, fearing forced conversions and heresy trials. In the mean time more fundamentalist Mhorkists are getting ready their torches and pitchforks, hoping they'll finally be able to practice their true faith. Plans for protests and counter-protests are rapidly being made.

Bad things.

It depends on your country, what caused the decline in approval and what strikes our fancy.

Best case scenario you need to make your people happy with you again before taking another controversial decision (or not and suffer worse consequences the next time).
Worst case scenario you lose the game.

Edit2: It also depends on the specific circumstances. Instituting a large war tax when you're being attacked by a much stronger nation might not decrease approval at all, while a much smaller 'just because' tax does.

Depends on what you want.

You just do everything in the form:
Spend x on [tech from list].
Spend x on [solder type].
Spend x on fortification.
Spend x on [resource] mining.
Without ever giving any other order or saying anything else (as long as you don't get attacked).

You can also make elaborate plots.

You invest money in it.

The region resource is abundant and can be mined/sold for a profit. The country resource is abundant enough to economically mine for internal use (and thus effectively profit from the cheaper price than importing). The other resources can be 'mined' where you make a small profit from buying and reselling.

All of these are expressed in increased income from industry. It also protects you from damage to your income if people decide to boycott you.

Income from mining is calculated differently from other industry income. So they both have a positive effect, but in a different way.

The benefit of having the tertiary resources is very low (you might make a tiny profit over a lot of turns), however if you get into diplomatic trouble with other countries and they boycott you it's very valuable to have some reserves. The primary and secondary resources have a more direct profitable effect.

For the purposes of this game 'tertiary resources' are whatever resources out of gas, iron, oil, rare earth metals and minerals you don't have from your region or your country. You are assumed to have a sufficient supply of them from trade with the other countries.

Today three large hammers were found embedded in the ground in front of the seats of power of Disputelo, Maeristo Lux and Caeliah, no one saw them being placed despite the areas being usually well travelled even at night. Religious leaders are claiming that these so called 'godhammers' are prophesied to be the first warning signs of a terrible fate that awaits country leaders who are not interested in leading their people. More rational people are left scratching their heads at this, although it has also served to point out their governments have been rather lacklustre in doing their jobs over the last few months.

Policy change

A slew of new policies were announced in Chesstopia today, some were popular, some where not. In particular the outlawing of condoms was condemned as unduly interfering in the lives of people for some nebulous government gain. Birthrates are expected to increase, but for a large part within families that can't support the children well. On the other hand, the workers in the mining industry, a significant part of the total population of Chesstopia, are happy with the new government regulation for lethal incidents.


Increased taxrate in Chesstopia decreases government approval by 5 and increases expected income by ~500M/season.
Other policy changes decrease approval by 7 and economy by 10, birthrate is expected to increase.

People will generally disapprove if you do things that limit them, but they get used to the status quo eventually. Throwing money at it is the simplest solution to quickly increase approval, just not taking any other unpopular decisions for a while also works.

Putting more money in the orphanages will go to whatever you focus it on (military in case of the investment last turn), advertising it will go to approval.

Edit: Yes, your investments in mining will counteract the loss in economy.

Elybria reveals documented Mhorkish activity in Arrakis!

Aiming to sow seeds of discontent in the country, the Mhorkish Agent, named Markman Ghaor, was discovered in the Arraki capital by intelligence forces. An open 20-page document details Ghaor's activities in the capital. The spy reportedly handed out thousands of anti-government brochures to the people of Arrakis, aiming to start revolts against the government and create instability, and is suspected to have created a semi-organized group of dissenters to the government. Whether or not they were planning on military action is unknown.
Ghaor and family had been living in The Holy Empire of Mhork for multiple generations. He official occupation from a file 10 years ago states "Government Accountant".
Arrakis officials immediately set out to arrest Ghaor, but his place of residence was abandoned, all possibly relevant documents burned. At the moment he remains at large.

A note on embargoes. They're not particularly effective if only one nation does it, the total effect of an embargo of a nation is determined by whether it's cut off from (most of) the primary suppliers of a resource (in this case the Oekkezian nations for minerals), all suppliers (primaries and those who have it as their secondary resource) and the country's own stock of the resource.

You also might want to put some conditions on lifting the embargo, people tend to not like it when their leaders are starving another nation just because they don't like them.

The feasibility of doing anything international on your own is pretty low in general.

You don't really have the knowledge to build something like the ISS atm, you might want to try a few more satellites and normal manned flight first.

A simple calculation to put things in perspective: 10B a turn / 50.000 per reservist * 1 turn to prepare a defence = 200.000 troops.

Shocking news

Today the Word of Mhork released an article describing an interview with an anonymous source in the Mhork government. The source revealed that the elusive Markman Ghaor, known in Mhork as Tch'Tanah, subject of the recent three month long worldwide manhunt, has been found. For the past three months he has been in custody of Arrakis who have yet to release him, demanding some form of recompense from the Holy Empire of Mhork, though there appears to be no sort of deal in the works. In addition, a startling revelation has occurred: Markman Ghaor was very recently spotted in Topos itself prepared on a plane back to Arrakis. This information begs the questions: why did Arrakis authorities not bring this news to light to stop wasting effort on a useless worldwide manhunt? Why did Mhorkish authorities keep quiet? Why was Markman secretly in Topos? Why did Topos stay silent? When will Tch'Tanah get the justice we all deserve? More on this story as it develops.

Orthel's first attempt to get a man into space was under way.

"T-minus 45 seconds."

Hajek Biederman wasn't nervous. He'd put in hundreds of hours of training for the mission. Perhaps even thousands.

"T-minus 30 seconds."

30 seconds until Hajek would take off into space. 30 seconds until Hajek would go rocketing into the sky, out of the atmosphere, going where no man has gone before.

"T-minus 15 seconds"

Haj was ready.

"T-minus 10...

We have liftoff!"

The G-forces hit Haj almost instantly. The roar of the engines below him were deafening. It was all so exhilarating.

"Biederman, this is mission control. It appears that some debris has punctured the final stage's fuel hose. We can get you up, but we wouldn't be able to get you down. Cut the engines when you reach 5 km, separate the command pod from the rocket, and parachute back down."

Hajek hesitated. He could still make it into space. He could still make history, at the cost of his life.

"Biederman, you've passed 5 km. You need to cut the engines immediately."

Haj still couldn't make up his mind. Was it worth it?

"Biederman, you need to cut the engines right now. Do you read me?"

Haj audibly sighed over the radio.

"Yes, I read you"

The engines were cut. The stack separators were activated. Hajek's command pod parachuted down to safety.


The rescue team met up with Hajek's pod where it touched down.

"It's okay Hajek. We heard that they're going to attempt the mission next week. You still have a shot to make history."

Today, with a lot of fanfare, Lord Chesskid revealed the 'Friendship mk. 1' missile. During the ceremony several were placed in the 'friendship tubes' of the middle finger statue that graces the central plaza of the capitol "to protect the proud nation of Chesstopia from foreign aggression". Meanwhile [REDACTED] more missiles are being placed in strategic places all over the country. The specifics of it's capabilities are a closely guarded secret. Meanwhile an even larger number of similar missiles are being deployed in Elybria.

19 small aircraft take off from a military airstrip in Mechanica Terram, veering off in different directions.

Shortly after entering Espysius airspace the foreign objects are discovered and immediately shot down from the ground.

The ones sent to Tragoedia, Punatheia, Kartonia, Amyr, Swizzerland, Maeristo Lux, Mhork, Elybria and Morphia managed to get a little further, after ignoring a warning to leave their sovereign airspace they were also taken out.

The Orthel and Lanthiria militaries were a little more cautious, sending a fighter jet to intercept the object, they confirmed it as being an UAV before removing it from their airspace.

As soon as the UAV sent to Castelia crossed the border all contact was lost, it is unclear what happened exactly.

Gunia opted to take a warning shot at the object first after the initially ignored warning, after that was also ignored the UAVs were shot down.

The one sent to Chesstopia was also immediately shot upon, followed by a message to any pilots that they might want to bail out about now.

In Arrakis, as soon as the object was discovered a fighter jet was sent after it. When the pilot reported back that it was an UAV, this was passed up though the chain of command until it arrived with the Minister of War two hours later, by which time the UAV itself had already returned to Mechanica Terram.

Blood for the blood god


Viewing audiences throughout Swizzerland tuned in to watch the top-rated "Gears: Teeth of Blood" educational historical drama, only to find it interrupted five minutes in:

"Swizzerland, we interrupt your regularly scheduled broadcast to bring you this very special edition of," cue bright, flashing strobes, "SACRIFICES TO ARMOK!"

Cut to an elaborately coiffed dorf, along with two much nerdier dorfs, in front of a huge studio audience, applauding manicly.

The elaborately coiffed dorf speaks: "Fellow servants of Armok, we all know that Mechanica Terram sent an unmanned aerial vehicle into Swizzerland airspace last week."

Behind the dorfs on the stage, an immense digital display lights up, showing pilot's-view footage of a UAV being chased. In the lower right hand corner is a timer showing an elapsed time. Within seconds, a missile is launched; at the moment the missile reaches the UAV and detonates, the timer stops updating, and just shows a blinking 6:24.40.

The coiffed dorf continues. "Six minutes, twenty four seconds. Shot down by two aircraft."

There's a polite smattering of applause.

"But, the question has to be asked: can we do better?"

Higher-energy applause fills the studio, but the coiffed dorf does not seem to like what he's hearing. He holds a hand to his ear, and repeats, "I can't hear you! I said, can we do BETTER?"

The audience hoots and hollers; there's a lot of stomping of feet. This seems to please the coiffed dorf, who turns to the other two who are on stage with him.

"These two need no introduction, but in case you've been working in the salt mines for the last year, allow me to introduce you to Alvin McMurn, two-time winner of the Novacraft II ladder championship!" One of nerdy looking dorfs waves his hand, obviously very embarrassed. The coiffed dorf continues, "And Garm Dummon, the top ranked Call of Battlefield 8 player!"

Two computer workstations are wheeled out onto stage, while Alvin and Garm shake eachother's hand before taking their seats. The digital display behind them now shows a split screen setup, each half showing a UAV flying through the air, overlaid with technical readouts.

The coiffed dorf continues: "In approximately 30 seconds, our UAVs will enter into Mechanica Terram airspace. Each contestant has sixteen cameras giving them a full surrounding view of their vehicle. The goal is six minutes, twenty four seconds. Let's get reeeeeeeeeeady to praise Armok!"

The crowd goes wild, but at a wild, "Go!" from the announcer, instantly quiet. Timers appear on both halves of the split screen, counting up from 0:00.00.

Within 30 seconds both UAVs are set upon by dozens of contacts. "Wait, where did those come from?!" The announcer exclaims, "A response time like that should be impossible." Meanwhile both UAVs are quickly bracketed in and brought down with gunfire, neither having lasted more than 45 seconds.

Suddenly a figure cloaked in darkness appears besides the screen, he raises a hand and the feed changes to the inside of a Hawk I cockpit, the people paying attention wonder if there's even a camera there.

"What was that all about?" The pilot asks his squadron. His flight leader responds: "Command picked up a Swizz transmission, we were there anyway, so they asked us to take out the two hostile objects on our way to the targets." As the fighter/bombers continue towards Oekkezia.

The feed changes again, to the office of the party leader of Elybria, who is just finishing recording a speech to be sent in a few minutes.

As soon as the recording stops he turns to a speaker labelled 'missile command'. "Attention all stations, ready all missiles for a strike against target Mike Papa Alpha Three Six." Among a number of "affirmative"s there are a lot of questions for confirmation, "dafuqs", "Wait, What!?"s, "Are you sure you don't mean Mhork, sir?", questions about how someone managed to hack this signal and other expressions of disbelief.

Another wave of a gloved hand and the feed changes back to the Hawk I cockpit, now fast coming up on the Elybrian border, the screen splits and a second plane is shown, this one coming up on Chesstopia, each flying in a formation of a hundred fighters. Long range radar already shows fighters being scrambled to intercept, but the Hawk I's stealth means they were picked up too late to be intercepted outside the border.

The first Hawks let loose with missiles at targets marked by the UAV some time ago in the limited time they had to scout, the rest start scanning for further installations, finally coming under fire from SAM sites and intercepting fighters.

A huge explosion is seen in the fight over Elybria, it looks like an ICBM collided with a Hawk by pure chance, disintegrating several and hitting others with shrapnel, this only speeds up the end for the Mechanica pilots in Elybria, not that those in Chesstopia fared much better. Within a few more minutes both the Hawks that were being followed by the feed are shot down by the defenders.

Back in the Swizzerland studio the cloaked figure takes a step backwards and seems to melt into the shadows, the feed changes back to the no-signal from the original UAVs.

"Ahem... Uhm... Well..." The announcer stutters "That was unexpected... Anyway, back to the show." He turns to the two players, who are still staring at the screen in shock. "Oh, that's a bad break. Everyone give them a hand!" After the enthusiastic applause dies down, he continues: "As you know, failing a challenge to Armok results in being thrown off the top of the Tower of Justice." Uniformed dorfs carrying hammers can be seen taking the contestants off-screen. "You can tune in to see that at the normal time tomorrow..."

About fifteen minutes later the message recorded by the Elybrian party leader is broadcast internationally:
"The country of Morphia has violated numerous agreements and we have recently confirmed to have been conducting harmful espionage work in our country. Normally, our country would be willing to let such violations of trust slip in favour for keeping a peaceful Oekkezia, but the effort involved in the work in our country could be nothing more but an act of aggression that was inevitably leading up to their declaring war on us. In response, we are, at this point in time, at war with the country of Morphia. God bless us all."

Just in time for missiles to start raining down on the unwitting people of Morphia. Soon after protests and riots start breaking out all over the nation, people being not too happy about their government attacking their peaceful neighbour over an obviously made up excuse.


For Mechanica Terram, 400 died. Almost the entire fleet of Hawk fighters was destroyed.
For Chesstopia, 167 died. 52 missiles were destroyed.
For Elybria, 192 died. 60 missiles were destroyed.
Elybria fired 40 missiles as Morphia. 500 missile operators are facing court-martial for refusal to follow orders.
For Morphia, 784 852 died.
DiplomatDC lost 20 approval for an unprovoked attack.
Orcinus lost 80 approval for... apparently going completely insane.
For Swizzerland, 2 died. A new national sport has been born.

The smoke over Oekkezia was still visible when the response to the Mechanican attack came. Dozens of missiles streaked out of Chesstopia and Elybria to avenge the losses suffered.

The Chesstopian missiles were aimed precisely at any known military target, blowing up airfields and bunkers all over the country, the Elybrian ones were more indiscriminate, hitting several cities.


Chesstopia fired 100 missiles at Mechanica Terram. Elybria fired 50 missiles at Mechanica Terram.
For Mechanica Terram 1 197 205 died. Severe damage was done to military assets and fortifications.

Embargoes

Today Castelia announced that, following group consensus both in Iruildona and among the other countries with minor deposits of rare earth metals, it would join in embargoing Elybria on both iron and rare earth's.

This leaves Elybria in a precarious position.
Not a single country with meaningful gas deposits is willing to trade with it any more, apart form Tragoedia, which doesn't have the industry to export to other nations.
The only country with major iron deposits that is still willing to supply Elybria, Kartonia, is equally unable to export significant quantities, forcing Elybria to rely completely on the lower quality ore from Gunia.
The situation for rare earth metals is only slightly better, Maestro Lux has a small mining industry that could supply Elybria, but suddenly finding itself in a position where the only competition is Swizzerland with their lower quality product Maestrian brokers are quickly increasing their prices.

The Elybrian economy is expected to crash completely in the following months.


Update later today... After we figure out exactly how hard Orc's economy crashes.

Mechanica Terram attacks Elybria again with what's left of their air fleet, this time attacking everything that looks even remotely civilized. Planes get shot down, people die, the usual.


For Elybria 14238 die, several cities were damaged.
For Mechanica Terram 157 die.

We care, it's just that last period I had time to be on in the afternoon several days a week so we could do events then and updates on the weekends. Now I'm only available when it's already 4-5AM in Australia during the week, pushing events to weekends and leaving no time for updates.
(before you ask, we realised quickly that on any given week each of us makes about a dozen mistakes, so updating without comparing notes is a bad idea)

The problem is that that is basically whenever the next time is we have a few hours free at the same time.

In theory that is every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, in practice at the moment it's basically just Sundays if nothing unexpected happens.

Elybrian woes


The embargoes placed upon it are hitting Elybria hard. The economy is grinding to a halt, not helped by the fact that the government is using a large portion of it's budget on building ever more missiles... And firing them at ever more people.

The people are getting really fed up with their ruler and fear of stronger reprisals by other nations is increasing every day. Emigration is at an all time high and approval is rapidly approaching the all time low from right after the Morphia bombing again.

But President Orcinus has a plan! In what was apparently a mad scheme he announced that Elybria was going to attack the neutral nation of Stonewynn next, over something involving 'posts' or something, he has ordered another stock of missiles launched. His cunning was revealed however when at the last moment he sent orders to fire at Topos instead!
The Elybrian missile operators, very well able to adapt to confusing and randomly changing orders, by experience if nothing else, even managed to actually get the missiles fired somewhat on schedule and on target.

Topos however seems to have been more prepared for such an attack than it's predecessors, tracking systems follow the incoming ICBMs and anti-missile missiles are fired, four for every one of the attackers. Unfortunately hitting such a fast moving target is not the easiest of tasks, but with some luck they manage to make over half of the ICBMs explode in mid-air, those that do come through mostly landing in the countryside.

Having already mobilised it's forces Klazam has now ordered Topos army to Elybria, hoping to end the reign of Orcinus.


Elybria fired 100 missiles at Topos.
For Topos 23.099 died.
Orcinus lost 20 approval for starting yet another fight while his nation is in trouble.

To this purpose Martial law is in effect across the nation as of right now, all resources will be devoted to keeping the invaders out, all that are capable of serving are hereby drafted into service in whatever capacity they can best serve their nation.

Elybria is willing to compensate those that were wronged by the previous government and take steps to assure everyone that similar attacks will not happen in the future. It will not give in to extortion.

Elybria offers to:
Pay 0.2B to Topos for the civilians that died in an unprovoked attack.
Pay 3B to Mechanica Terram for the excessive damage done in retaliation for it's attack.
Decommission all it's long range missiles.

In exchange for ceasing all hostilities.

Might have to clarify that a bit then, with a highish intelligence level the chance is about 1/10000 per turn that someone finds out your plan (unless they have even higher intelligence). The highest vs. lowest atm gives a 3/1,000,000 of discovery on a small plotlet or 6/100,000 when building a Death Star in secret.

Apparently multiple people are planning to attack Chesstopia. I'm going to note here that Chesskid's final ingame action was to test his first nuclear weapon and he already had the delivery system. The event never got written but the result was 'you can now make nuclear bombs'.

Taxes, the root of all evil?


The spokesperson of the Orthellian oligarchy has prepared a speech to explain recent policy decisions:
Citizens of Orthel: You may be wondering why we recently raised such a massive military force seemingly out of the blue. Well, for the sake of transparency, I am here today to tell you why we would do such a thing.

Not every country of Gazebo has been as good to their people as Orthel has. Many nations overtax their citizens, others ignore the welfare of their people. Their citizens are often oppressed, unable to avoid the rampant taxation and other injustices. Even with their discontent with their governments, they are often unable to rise up and demand the freedom that they deserve. It is our duty as a nation to assist the downtrodden citizens of other countries, and liberate them from their unfair situations.

To the west lies a neighboring country of Orthel. This nation, of course, is Tragoedia. Their people are overtaxed, to the point of misery. They are clearly discontent with the current situation, but they're unable to make the changes needed in order to let them live fairly. This is why we have raised such a massive force: we wish to liberate their people from the oppressive situation in Tragoedia. We will march on their country, preferably peacefully, and take over their capital. We do not expect much opposition, but will take whatever actions necessary to overthrow the government. We do not desire war, we simply wish for our brothers and sisters in Tragoedia to be free from their overburdening politicians.

The Terramite government holds a press conference.
Just recently, Terramite pilots bombed major cities in Chesstopia in a bid to.... well that's for us to know. In any case, After Bombers were detected by Chesstopia radar, Amyr was called on to honor its mutual defense deal. Stealth fighters were immediately mobilized to defend Chesstopia.

Terramite pilots bombed major cities in chesstopia killing 1.171.528 Chesstopians. Chesstopian defenses and Amyr stealth fighters retaliated. 963 Mechanica Terram pilots were killed. Amyr lost 102.

Afterwards apparently the Chesstopian king got pissed and bombed us with missiles too, but it wasn't too well planned, because of whatever's that going on in their country. Nevertheless, 483,439 of our civilians are killed. And there goes our economy as well.

We've received intel that they're gonna produce nukes, train soldiers, and go into war economy. Hmmm.

Today every inhabitant of Gazebo suddenly had a blackout. On waking up they found that the world is now subtly different.

Kartonia (Kartosael) ceases to exist
Lanthiria (Nexus) ceases to exist
Gunia (TheBadOne) ceases to exist
Elybria (NPC) ceases to exist
Morphia (animorphev1) has been replaced by Arz Centaria (tn5421). It starts with 30B
Chesstopia (chesskid3) is now an NPC nation
Stonewynn (PrivateI) ceases to exist


If anyone wants to do anything with Elybria based on existing relations please send a PM before the end of this turn.
