RULES (inspired by the rule sets of Faraday, Maestro, and Nexus):


General Behavioral Expectations:

• All site-wide rules are to be followed. They can be found here. Rules here are also in effect. Important points are:

o Personal attacks on any basis are prohibited. Excessive vulgarity will also be stomped upon. When in doubt, err on the side of being civil and respectful.
o Play to your win condition.

Game Play, Voting, Lynching, and Night Actions:

• You may not edit or delete posts once they have been submitted.
• Do not quote mod communications anywhere in the thread.
This is my bolded color
so do not use it for any purposes, particularly impersonating me.
• Claiming to be an anti-town player sharing an alignment with another living player in the game is a modkillable offense regardless of one's actual alignment or whether the statement was intended to be taken seriously.
• When placing a vote, it is not necessary to unvote first or to put your vote on a new line. However, votes must be submitted in bold like this:
VOTE: penguin_alien
or like this: VOTE: penguin_alien. I will accept any votes in these formats so long as I can tell the intended target from the abbreviation used.
• Lynches (or decisions to no-lynch) require a majority of the votes in play.
• No cryptography is permitted.
• Discussion may continue in twilight.
• Once you are killed, do not post in the game thread. This includes ‘Bah!’ posts.
• Night actions may be PMed to me or posted in bold in the appropriate QTs. If you know you will be V/LA during the night phase, you may send in a conditional night action in advance.

Activity Parameters and Mod Communication:

• Prods will be sent out by PM to players who have not posted within the past 48 hours. Players receiving prods have 24 hours to post before I will start looking for a replacement. If the day ends before you can respond in-thread, you must PM me within the allotted time.
• Three prods in one game day phase or four prods overall will result in my replacing you.
• Day phases will last two weeks. Night phases will last two days.
• While you are welcome to post about any issues that arise in the thread (use bold to get my attention, please) you may also PM me concerning any problems. Use your best judgment here, and I will endeavor to do the same. This also applies to issues with me/my modding or other players.
• If you go on V/LA, please PM me.
• Alterations to these rules will be announced in-thread and PMed to all players in the event they become necessary either due to unforeseen circumstances or my own oversights.

Miscellaneous or Game-Specific Topics:

• Please do your utmost to avoid alt slips. If you do mispost, please quote the post as the hydra account ASAP.

Violations of these rules will result in a warning for a first offense and a potential forced-replacement or modkill for subsequent offenses. I reserve the right to skip the warning for particularly willful or egregious violations.

The bridge club is slowly filling up for the evening when nine new players arrive. Everything looks peaceful on the surface, yet as they start filling out their convention cards, it becomes clear that not everyone came ready to support a partner. The group disperses to various tables, but a new air of tension is present. Which of these players are here to win...and which are looking to cause trouble?

Nine players took their places. North, South, East, West, in which direction do scum lie?

One partnership is already running into problems, it would seem. When jklash12 sitting in North seat doubles after South's 1 D opening and West's 1 S rebid, passes partner's 2H bid, and shows a hand with zero hearts, it's the last straw.

"That's it, I'm not playing with you any more!" His partner storms out. Without anyone to play his dummy hand, jklash12 is out of the club...

I made an error in jklash12's flavor when flipping the lynch. The role and alignment were correct. The proper flavor has now been denoted; many apologies for the mistake.


Night One Flavor:

With jklash12's exit, the club returned to its usual level of activity. Bidding cards hit the table, cards rustled as they were returned to the bridge boards after each hand, pencils recorded contracts made and contracts going down. Not even a dull roar, really.

Could it really be that easy: one quarrelsome duo eliminated and smooth sailing from there? Surely not...

Six tricks is a book; bidding is done as a number of tricks to be taken exceeding a book given a particular trump status for the hand. This can either be a suit or a declaration of no trump. So for example, a bid of two hearts (2 H) is a bid to take at least eight tricks with hearts as the trump suit.

Bidding and making a game contract is superior to bidding and making a part-score contract due to the bonus points received. Game in no trump is 3 NT, game in the major suits (hearts and spades) is 4 H/4 S, and game in the minor suits is 5 C/5 D. Bidding and making slam contracts involves even more bonus points, with small slams being 6 of anything and grand slams being 7 of anything (yes, a grand slam means taking all the tricks; if you bid and make it you get to pretend you're an airplane and fly around the table. No, wait, that's just with my group of friends...)

Note that one has to bid the game or slam contract; getting there on overtricks doesn't net bonus points.

As per standard auctions, each bid made must be for a more valuable contract than the previous one. If the number of tricks to be made in a contract doesn't increase, the trump suit must be higher, with order from least to most valuable being clubs, diamonds, hearts, spades, no trump.

The value of a contract changes with several factors. Vulnerability is one, where in duplicate bridge depending on the hand number to determine if one or both partnerships is eligible to score extra points for making a contract. A contract can be doubled by the defending partnership and in turn redoubled by the bidding partnership to make the final score higher. Finally, overtricks add value to the final score of a contract.

Once a contract has been reached (a bid made followed by three passes) the player to the left of the declarer has the lead. The declarer in the partnership is the one who first bid the suit of the final contract, not necessarily the last of the partnership to bid. What do we call the other half of the partnership? Dummy! Ahem. I mean, that's the designation for the declarer's partner. Once the defender has chosen a card to lead and played it, the dummy lays down his entire hand and takes no further part in the hand beyond playing whatever card the declarer calls for in turn. The dummy is not allowed to suggest plays or touch the cards unbidden. This means the declarer knows all the cards his partnership has available, and the defenders know the exact contents of the hand as well.

In playing cards, the led suit must be followed if possible. If a player cannot follow suit, he may then play any card from us hand, including any designated trump suit. The highest trump played on a trick wins it; if no trump are played the highest card of the led suit wins.

It's late and I'm tired, so we take a break from our regularly scheduled bridge instructional series to say that if you misdeal a hand such that you get 14 cards and an opponent gets 12 and no one notices and your partner puts you in a small slam contract, and the misdeal STILL isn't noticed until the tenth trick, expect to be mocked for the rest of the night. Especially if your partner manages to lose four of the ten tricks in the process...

Mod announcement in two parts:

First, the site is back up. Yay. As such, I've restarted the night deadline because why not at this point. New deadline at the end of this post.

Second, I am exceedingly sorry to have to do this, but I will be absent from the site for a week. It's a risk scum have the right to take in my philosophy. I often use trackers, and being tracked to two people, one of whom dies, is hard to wriggle out from. They also lose all the benefits of night actions if that particular player is blocked/interfered with. I respect that other mods/players feel differently.
