On this day, in 1825, the U.S. House of Representatives elected John Quincy Adams the 6th President of the United States. This marks the second and final time that a U.S. presidential election resulted in no candidate receiving the required votes from the electoral college, thus requiring the House of Representatives to decide. The contested election resulted in great difficulty for Adams in accomplishing his agenda, and as a result he is widely remembered and respected far more for both his work as the 8th U.S. Secretary of State (prior to his term as President) and his work as a Representative in the House (following his term as President) than for his term as President. Much like George W. Bush 175 years later, we use John Quincy Adams' middle name when referring to him and his presidency because his father served as president before him and they shared the same first name.

Perhaps the most notable thing about John Quincy Adams was his life long habit of keeping a journal. Historians view his journals as an invaluable source of insight into the early years of the United States, especially concerning the evolution of the American political process.
