His choice to discard it makes me feel like he wanted the town cred for not wanting to be forced to kill an innocent child.

In a set up like this, it's likely that he could have gotten 2 Townie cards, used one for the alignment and the non townie for the ability. It wasn't even a random vote, you presented it as a 'legitimate' reason to think someone might be scum, and tried to hinge it by saying 'this looks town but is a good scum move', to be more non committal of your read.
