The Journal of Sir John Franklin, Captain of the HMS Erebus
April 30, 1847. Ship lies groaning & straining in the ice off King William Island.
May 2, 1847. Sore gums & loose teeth indicate that many of the crew have scurvy, so I spoke out against this nefarious French disease & initiated tango lessons and likewise bench pressing of the ship’s spittoons to ward it off.
May 3, 1847. Ship still mired in the ice. The bosun, in the midst of a tango maneuver, fell overboard, went through the ice, & was promptly torn to shreds by a school of man-eating cod. Bloody Arctic!
May 5, 1847. Dreamt Lady Jane came for a visit & asked, “Sir John, why are you late to supper?” “I’m looking for the Northwest Passage, dear,” I told her. “But you can’t eat the Northwest Passage, can you?” she replied ominously, then vanished.

Rules
General
1. This game uses sitewide rules. Have you actually READ this link lately? -- viewtopic.php?f=4&t=6470 -- READ IT if you do not want to get warned!
1a. Do not private message other users about anything having to do with this game in any circumstance even/especially if you are dead/have replaced out/etc. If you even think it might be a grey area, it is not a grey area, it is not ok. Don't do it.
2. Did you know that discussion of ongoing mafia games is not allowed? -- viewtopic.php?f=4&t=30908
2a. Did you think there was an exception to 2? Nope, there isn't. There's no grey area. If the game is ongoing, IT DOES NOT EXIST IN THIS THREAD. No reference, whatsoever, should be made about other ongoing games. Ever.
Respect
1. Be nicer to other people than they are to you. Attack the play not the player.
1a. Assume good faith for replace-outs. Players can cancel a replace-out if a replacement has not yet been found. Players can replace-back-in if they have not been dead threaded for the same slot, unless you were force replaced. If you replace out, please do not comment directly or indirectly about the game in other sections of the site including the queue and/or your signature. This falls into the broad umbrella of "outside influence."
1b. Sexual innuendo toward other players will result in a moderator warning. Do not make my thread weird...er.
2.
Play to win.
2a.
You must read your role pm, and confirm that you understand your role.
2b.
Do not state, whether honest or false, that you have not read your role pm
in-thread. If I somehow forget to send you a role pm or send you multiple role pms, please contact me
by pm
.
2c. You can claim scum, and you can claim scum with someone else provided that the moderator can reasonably suspect non-malicious motives behind such.
2d. Scum can night kill their teammates, but I must see evidence that such a move is not game-throwing.
3.
Avoid using the plain spoiler (blackout tag). Use spoiler= instead!
This is wrong.
4.
Please use spoiler tags when posting large videos or animated GIFs.
4a. Gifs this size are ok, any larger should be spoilered:
i.e. gifs this size should be spoilered:
Spoiler:
5. Cryptography and other forms of codes are generally not allowed. Breadcrumbs are generally okay.
6.
Constant off-topic posting will not be tolerated.
7.
Provable randomness is strongly discouraged.
In particular, do not use the dice tag.
Honour
1.
Discussion of ongoing games at any time, through any means, and regardless of content, is prohibited.
2. Do not attempt to impersonate the moderator.
Purple is my color, but you may use it as long as you are not attempting to impersonate me with it.
Note I don't actually edit in replies all that often.
3. Do not edit or delete your post if for some reason you have the ability to do so.
4.
Do not attempt to get the moderator to influence the game; in particular, do not try to use the moderator to confirm your role.
4a. Any VC-related question or V/LA should be declared in-thread.
4b.
Everything else should be discussed by pm and by pm only.
4c.
Do not discuss any disciplinary actions that the moderator takes in-thread.
5.
Trust tells are prohibited.
5a.
Do not replace out in such a manner as to confirm your alignment.
6.
Do not quote or copy-paste moderator communications and other forms of private communications.
6a. Post links to anything except the main thread, timestamps, and read statuses should never be referenced in the game thread.
Access list numbers in private topics are also covered by this rule.
6b. You may directly copy-paste
unflavored night action results
(usually in bold) as well as your alignment, flip role, and effective role from your role pm, but
do not directly quote them
.
6c. Scum may quote result pm's and role pm's in their scum PT. The same applies for a mason group in their mason PT.
7. No Bah! posts. When you dead you dead, no talkie in game thread.
Miscellaneous
1. Follow the spirit of the rules.
1a.
Do not attempt to find loopholes in the ruleset.
1b. While the moderator will generally assume good-faith, action can be taken against inadvertent rule breaks if deemed necessary.
2.
All PTs will be released within 24 hours of the game's conclusion.
Players in any thread except the Dead PT may request redactions at any time
before
I release the PT. The dead thread is released immediately on the conclusion of the game.
3. The moderator reserves the right to update this ruleset as necessary.
New items will be underlined
, and
deleted items will be striked through.
(Note: The markup on this line is an example.)
Setup-Specific Rules
Activity and Deadline Rules
1. Days last 14 days. Nights last 48 hours. (After day 4, I reserve the right to shorten the length of the dayphase)
2.
Nights may be extended if a replacement is needed.
There will be a minimum of 24 hours between the time a replacement is found and when night actions are due.
3. You will be prodded after
48 hours
of inactivity; this does not change on weekends. All prods should be responded to
in-thread unless the thread is locked in which case pm is acceptable.
4. 2 prod dodges are equivalent to a single prod. If you are prodded again from prod-dodging, you may not prod dodge. Prodges must still include some game content: "Krazy is still scum", "Krazy is still town," and "I like this wagon" are good enough for a prodge. While a subjective rule, prod dodges are objectively defined as posts that consist of little or no content related to the game with the sole purpose of avoiding prodding. Minimum content is not defined here as to mitigate abuse, but do realize that this rule is applied as objectively as possible.
5.
V/LAs should generally be announced in-thread, not by pm.
You should also set V/LA in the User CP to make sure I do not forget.
6. If you have
regular weekend V/LA
, it is
your reponsibility
to either inform me at the end of
each week
or to remember to set V/LA status.
7.
V/LA players must post at least once every 96 hours.
Excessively long V/LAs (
14 days or longer
) may have stricter requirements imposed on them.
8. I reserve the right to warn and replace players whom I believe are exploiting loopholes in the activity rules. Please note that players are expected to do more than the bare minimum as outlined by these prodding rules. I reserve the right to warn and/or replace players whom I believe are exploiting loopholes in the activity rules, or are otherwise not treating the game as the commitment they signed up for.Regardless of whether or not you actually post, you are expected to be reading the game to the best of your ability at all times. (In other words, do not state that you have not been reading the game.)
Voting, Lynching, and Twilight Rules
To vote, use
Vote: Player
or VOTE: Player.
To unvote, use
Unvote: Player
or UNVOTE: Player.
You do not have to unvote to change votes.
Furthermore, I will only track the last *valid* vote in your post.
Vote Conspiracy
will not change your existing vote.
Player abbreviations are allowed, and the moderator may consistently abbreviate names in VCs.
Hammer occurs when half of all living players (rounded down) plus one cast a vote against the same player (or No Lynch). All votes after a hammer will not be counted, and the hammered player is the one who will flip. The time following a hammer is Twilight, and all players may continue talking.
No lynch will occur if deadline is reached without a hammer.
Setup Details
Unless otherwise specified, mafia may
not
perform a kill and use an active ability at the same time.
(these rules mostly borrowed from Ircher)

Notes about flavor:
At daybreak, I may include flavor text (depending on my availability and schedule). No one has a flavor name and this is not a theme game. Please do not engage in moderator speculation based on my flavor text.
Notes about VC:
This is my first time trying Mathblade's VC system. Please let me know about any issues that arise.
Game Start:
Role PMs are out. Please make sure you remember to confirm with your role name and faction via pm.
Now in Day 1

May 6, 1847. Men shivering constantly. Confrontation with the cook today. The quartermaster and others know that the larder is empty. There must be some solution, he insists. There is also the matter of our long-term chances he says. "What do you mean?" I asked. "Think, man, think!" he bellowed. "If one more man were to, say, fall overboard like the bosun... then that would be two fewer meals a day that we have to scrounge for. That could very well be one more day for the rest of us!"
He'd gone mad. He was dreaming of murder. The long nights had gotten to him. God above knows they have gotten to us all. I calmed him down, but what if someone heard him? What if there are people here who no longer see their fellow man as their shipmates, but as... threats?
With 12/15 players having confirmed, we have reached critical mass. For the remaining players, please confirm by PM with your role and alignment.

May 7, 1846. Things nearly got out of control. Too many people had heard what the cook, Malakittens, had said. It was mutinous, they said. Not against the captain, but against the entire crew! I thought it rubbish, but the words had been spoken, and the crew got riled up. Their bile was boiling. We looked over his things and there was no evidence of any wrongdoing, but the crew demanded an immediate court martial. The first mate insisted we had to string her up. A morbid affair. Have things gotten so bad so soon?
May 8, 1846. It was a damned cold night, and not improved by the shouting and screaming and shouting that broke my reveries. I put on my jerkin and rushed out as soon as I heard the sound of the shot. Found the source soon enough. It was the quartermaster, mate popopopopopopo. It must have been one of our marines, a man who served with me since all the way back in the Battle of New Orleans. It was a clean shot, he no doubt died instantly. A clean death, although gruesome nonetheless.
But that wasn’t all. No, by the grace of god, that wasn’t all. We found a marine dead as well! A strange coincidence on this most terrible night. But this was no easy murder. No… the poor marine, we found him not only stabbed, but dare I say it? It looked like they truly were trying to cut away at him. What savagery has infested our poor crew? What more can be said? I must go forward and bring these poor men back to rationality. Otherwise I too will end up like that poor marine, my dear friend davesaz.
It is now Day 2!
popopopopopopo and davesaz died!

May 9, 1846. The crew has lost all its mirth over the recent spat of deaths, and today they took it out on one of the most jolly and playful of fellows--the Performer, we all called him. They thought any man who could keep his spirits up in such gloom must be well fed & therefore a cannibal, someone who had not been living off our rotten tins. Despite my orders, they strung him up and cut open his gut... it was empty. This was concerning to me... the happiest man in the whole crew was the one who wasn't eating at all? Perhaps the tins really are spoiled, are infecting our brains somehow. This cannot last.
May 10, 1846. I have lost control and it is time to abandon ship. There is only one chance now. We must strike out for King William's Isle, through the wind and the snow. We must leave the comforts of the ship behind and try to make for land. Not one more day stuck on this ice. Not one more day.
During the night, two of my bravest men died. First, there was Akarin--a quiet, kindly soul. But I had tasked her with checking on the armory each night and noting the guns. Then, there was Io. Although I made no note of it here, but I had tasked Io with locking one person in the brig each night to see if that would stop the killing. Now, two of my bravest sailors are both dead. The crew is tearing itself apart. We must make for land. We must give up this ship once and for all. Come on, sailors! Pack up! We're heading out!
It is now Day 3!
Akarin and Io died!

May 11, 1846. We set out; we took the tender and loaded it with the tins. I knew the crew was drawing thin... there were few men now around me that I knew well from before this expedition, & those that I thought I had grown to respect looked at me with strange askance eyes. The fear & hunger & cold have turned this expedition into a nightmare. But that is why we must hit land! Over the ice, lads! Onward, to King William Island! That is what I was saying, but suddenly a group of my sailors turned and accused Ensign tictac of being a cannibal! What evidence was said--I heard not a word offered, but before I could even say a word Mr. CT stepped up behind her and hit her in the back of the head. This is not order! This is not the discipline of a ship! I was not sure we would even have time to properly examine the body... we had to press on. And I had to hope that Mr. CT would not turn on me next...
May 12, 1846. We hit King William Island! I knew we could do it--it was not so far as we had feared. Finally, we were sitting our feet on solid ground once again. I ordered tents to be set up and for camp to be established while we prepared for the overland journey to the southern edge of the island.
But then, something happened at night. I heard screaming, and rushed outside... one of my marines! Officer Lapsa, stabbed in the back! Oh dear god, he was still alive but... someone had cut straight through his thigh. Do these monsters amongst us not even have the dignity to kill before consuming the flesh...?
May 13, 1846. Captain Franklin is no longer among us. I, Mr. CT, along with my cohort of Purrcocet, Mr. Saudade, and our boy Mr. Stigligtz, have taken over this expedition. Franklin was a fool and was... unwilling to do what was necessary for us to survive. The rest of the
livestock
crew will do well... certainly one shall be joining us at dinner tonight.
Bon appetit
A win condition has been achieved!
Lapsa has died! He was an
even-night vigilante!
Congratulations to the scum team!
The scum team consisted of three mafia goons,
Saudade, Completly Trustworthy, and Purrcocet
, and a mafia traitor of
Hugo Stiglitz!
Game over!

Mod errors:
Apparently I was not supposed to reveal the nature of Akarin's informed status. I apologized to the scum team for this mistake, even though it made no impact to the game as far as I can tell. I do think the wiki entry for "Informed" could use for a bit of an update -- https://wiki.mafiascum.net/index.php?title=Informed -- so that other mods don't make this mistake.
I ended up confusing myself on whether the scum team even needed to shoot after they lynched Tictac; the wiki entry for traitor made it seem like the game could end immediately. In the process of consulting with mastina, implosion, and RadiantCowbells about whether scum needed to shoot, I tried asking implosion on discord. However, at the time Gammagoey had, as a joke, listed himself as implosion. Thankfully this did not impact the game but in the future I will need to be a lot more careful about discord and probably just stick to pms on the site when in doubt.
I continue to love flavor text but in retrospect I should not have given any indication about which faction made which kill on N1 (even though it seemed super obvious to me, but it might have discouraged speculation about multiball). I know normal games basically aren't even supposed to have flavor so I really wanted to not mess up there but I think that was a little mistake.
Other mod notes:
Mathblade's scrubber, once you get it working, is DOPE. Use it if you mod. Highly recommended.

Other miscellaneous note -- I think it's really hard to word "Voyeur" results
Here's what I went with for no actions on Performer:

Result: You did not see any action targeting Performer (other than yourself watching him, of course).

Yeah I've been trying to figure out how Ircher did vote progressions in NY213. I wanted to do that here but the way the scrubber outputs that data was really different. The wagon data seemed too convoluted to be helpful to me personally although tictac seemed to be trying to do something with it.
If town knew that scum were largely avoiding each other's wagons then this would have been the most informative VC on d2, but that would have required a large presupposition that there were only ever 1-2 scum on a wagon together. It would also require the town to guess that eveerrry wagon was on town except the one bus.
All PTs have now been released, thank you again to everyone for playing, mastina for backup moderating, radiantcowbells for setup design, and implosion for answering questions.
