All roles are randomly generated. Generally speaking it's a role + modifier, though you can end up vanilla and / or with no mods.
Apart from being able to exchange your them, abilities (and mods) generally work as usual and most will be familiar. You can only use one each turn, even if you exchange your role.

No 3rd party shenanigans, and your alignment will never change (so it's a simple 7-2 in that regard).

Dayphases last 12 days.
Nightphases last 48 hours.
Deadlines will generally be at 00:00 CEST (which is GMT + 1 + 1).
If an absolute majority is reached during the dayphase, I'll add the remainder of the current (actual) day to the following nightphase, keeping deadlines at 00:00.
If I have plans in the evening (and I have some film marathons / festivals coming up..) deadline will be somewhat later, which you're free to use to use to your advantage.
In fact, I'm busier than I was a few months ago, so updates may be be irregular on certain days.
Also, just so you know, for convenience I'n naming day- night cycles

. This may come up when reading your ability descriptions. Turn 1 for example, includes day(phase) 1 and night(phase) 1.

Mafia
: You win when nothing can prevent the mafia from eliminating all other players who are not aligned to mafia.

During the dayphase, you may vote to remove one player from the game (i.e. "lynch"). You do this by bolding
vote:

No lynch
is an acceptable vote, and is used if you want to end the day without a lynch. You may post
remove vote
(or unvote) to remove your vote altogether.
Do not unvote if you simply want to change your vote, I prefer to see only a single vote-related statement per post, so simply vote another player. If you do unvote to remove your vote, please don't add a name behind it.
Lynches (or no lynches) require absolute majority of the votes to go through, meaning a number of votes equal to 50% of the number of active players, rounded down, plus 1.
Once an absolute majority has been reached, the (no) lynch is locked in, and no new votes will be counted. The player to be lynched may talk until the write-up for the end of the day has been posted.

Your role PM will state if you have any abilities, what their effects are, and how to use them.
If you have an active ability, you may PM me any time during the turn with the required parameters (generally just your target). You may change this any time before the nightphase deadline. What's in the box?

So, the theme of the game is the mysterious mystery box. All players are free to exchange their current role for the contents of the mystery box. You may get something better. You may get something worse.

The rule: you may only exchange your current role once per turn (day-night cycle).

You do this by sending me a PM with the subject
Micro 648: exchange role
. What's in the body is not important. I will handle requests on a first come, first served basis. You hget a new role PM for every request, so make sure to check your inbox before you start posting.

Also, keep in mind that the use of active abilities remains the same: you can only use one each turn (unless the role PM states otherwise). You can use an ability and exchange your role, but then you won't be able to use any abilities you may have gotten for the remainder of the turn.

I myself will exchange the current contents of the mystery box for a new role regularly. Depending on the timing of your request, you may end up with a new role, or someone else's discarded role. I have no hard rule for how often and at what times I exchange the contents of the box, but it's probably going to be roughly once a day at variable times.

Roles I put in the box, and the ones you start with, are randomly generated. I won't go into detail, but in general: there is a pool of roles / abilities, and a pool of modifiers. They're rolled separately, so you will get a role, which may be vanilla, with a good chance of a modifier, though you can end up with no modifier. The majority of roles and mods are familiar, though there are a few original and set-up specific ones. I'm not going crazy for the first mystery box mafia, I'll save my grand idea roles for a potential sequel. The mods range from beneficial, to restrictions, to negative utility.

I intend to be flexible with the actual role and mod pool, and the chance percentages. I'll disclose full details in the dead thread, so if you're dead, and feel like discussing the mechanics, you may end up help tweaking the mystery box.

Before you die, you may determine the flavour surrounding your death. Keep it simple (you can't use this to incriminate someone). I will incorporate it in the casualty report, though if I can find the spare time (not likely at the moment) I may draw something.

You will be prodded after 48 hours of not posting, although I'll be flexible right before and after nightphases.
I'll look for a replacement in the following cases:
- When you don't confirm within 48 hours.
- When you have received 3 prods.
- When you don't respond to a prod within 24 hours.
- When you ask to be replaced.
I may or may not allow you to continue to play after I've requested a replacement, but haven't found one yet.

Some things to note:

Starting this game, I'm requiring 100% confirmations (we'll see how that goes).

Keep in mind that I'm flexible with the role pool, the mod pool, and the actual definitions.

Always check if you've received a new role PM (by request.. or some other means), the most recent one is the one that counts.

It feels a
bit
like a cop-out ending (slightly because of me delaying it but..), but I feel like mafia won
mostly
because of Not_Mafia not paying attention. If he exchanged his role right away, I suspect we'd be looking at a town win right now.
Not_Mafia definitely stepped up his game day 3, but it's a bit too little too late.

I liked how House managed to bullshit his way out of
major
scumslip, and I like how Vaxkiller continued that style, though I think it was delaying the inevitable with the truth coming out eventually. House fake result on NJAC was not something I'd have done, but team ice cream made the most out of it.

Comment about the "mistake". I did indeed make a mistake, but not the one House was claiming, so I didn't make a public announcement about it. What I did was, give House a role cop report about Expedience instead of a neapolitan report. If House claimed this and if did inconvenience him, I'd have made a public statement about it, but House claimed the town vanilla result on NJAC, and tried to use my mistake to bail him out his precarious situation. His situation was caused by his neapolitan / vanilla cop scumslip, and had nothing to do with the erroneous report I sent.

I liked how the mechanics worked, though it's a shame people weren't exchaning their roles more. I feel like this game could benefit from simply more players, I think a potential sequel would be a mini.
I will post the roles and mods with their chances in a separate post, but things like neighbours had a relatively bigger chance of getting used, but random being the way it is, neighbours never got used in this game. The neighbourhood is empty. Only one neighbour role made it into the box, but never got exchanged.

Those are the roles and modifiers. I only changed one thing during the game. I was getting way too many ascetics, so I changed it from 10 to 5, while bumping up neighbours from 15 to 20.

Like I said pre-game, I didn't want to go crazy for the first game, with only several mostly known roles ands modifiers. Getting in more would mean more roles not getting used anyway.

The unfamiliar roles and mods:

Box investigator

Already in the thread, but this lets you find out the contents of the box. Served 2 purposes.. You can see if there's something worth exchanging for (the obvious purpose), and you can somewhat verify some role / exchange claims.

Role switcher

Originally this would let you force 2 players to switch their roles, but I felt that would be a bit too chaotic, so I changed it so you'd force someone to use the mystery box (i.e only targeting one player).

Censor

The most exotic role, this would let you delete posts. Someone had this role, but exchanged it without using it.

Mod remover

Vanillaizer but for mods.

Hashtag

Gave you a post requirement as seen in the thread.

Deadtrader

Would restrict you to exchange your role with dead players, you can't use the box.

Other comments:

No cops or vigs. This was deliberate, and not up for discussion. Didn't want to potentially end up with multiples of those. Would not be a problem with non-random roles, which was the first idea I had for this set-up, but I liked the idea of random generated roles.

For next game I should definitely bump up role cop.

Vanillas had a relatively big chance of popping up, but would most likely be exchanged, making neapolitans harder to use, but the only way to get some form of cop report. I think they're more valuable here than in a normal game.

Odd and even mods were universal, I'd edit them to fit the role, so odd-night or odd-turn.

Likewise, I'd just ignore mods that wouldn't make sense with the roles, like odd-turn vanilla.

I was mafia, it was my job to lie and take maximum advantage of every conceivable opportunity.
Wasn't sure to what extend you have been banned, so didn't know if you'd get the message or be able to post here.

Anyway: sure, I'm not taking offense or anything, but if I make a mistake it's my job to make sure it has the least consequences (which is also why I didn't give the report to Vaxkiller), so that's how I decided to deal with it. Like I said privately, if I made it public, it would implie your fake claim about the town vanilla report on NJAC was correct, and I couldn't have that. But like I said, I'm impressed you managed to bullshit your way out of it regardless, enough for Vaxkiller to survive the game.

Some stuff I'd like to know:

Did you enjoy the game?

Would you like to play a sequel (hypothetically)?

Would you play this in mini format? Large? Which format would have your preference?

What do you think of this set-ups possible roles and mods, and their chances?

Which roles / mods would you like to remove if any?

And most of all, which roles / mods would you like to add?

All other comments / questions / criticism / whatever is welcome of course.


Like I said, for this first game I didn't want to go crazy, but for a second game.. I personally would want a bigger playerlist, so a potential sequel is definitely going to be at least a mini. And I'd include more roles / mods you'd see outside of normal. Perhaps even stuff I've posted in the grand idea thread. Actually, this could maybe benefit from a thread like that of its own.

As far as the mechanics go, I think the distro method was fun, but perhaps find a way to exchange modifiers separately from the roles so a hashtag modifier isn't instant doom for a decent role but costs them something important in order to use... such as lose your vote for the current day (or following day if swapped at night).
This is actually a bit against the spirit of what I had in mind. The whole point is that
most likely
you're getting a caveat with your role, though which one was the question. If you're lucky, it would only be something like an odd-night restriction, and if you're less lucky, it would be that or something like hated. It would make you carefully consider when to use the mystery box. The option is always there, but there was always the chance of getting something worse, which was the point. If I'd separate the distribution like you suggest, people would lose their disadvantages quickly, which I think would be less balanced, if there is such a thing with a game like this. Your only unlikely other option is the mod remover. If a townie would have it, you could just state you have a negative utility, hoping someone would remove it.

As for the hastag mod specifically, it was meant to be annoying. It doesn't affect your ability directly, but it would either give away your role to the mafia, or if you forgot (which proved very easy, haha, but totally expected), it would stop you from using it. Or both.. But since the set-up is random, this may or may not be an actual problem. You don't know if the mafia have anything to stop you apart from actually killing you, and you don't know if town has other means of helping you. Eventhough your role is out, you may not actually be the most optimal target for the mafia. And of course, you could actually
be
mafia, which would make this mod less of a problem.

That said, I originally also planned for a #imaraver (don't ask) post requirement, which would make other players question if the regular hashtag was a gambit or something. But I thought it didn't really add much. And now you know it's out there, you could fake it next game.

My suggestion still presents a caveat, and one that most would say away from using.

Losing one's vote to rid a negative modifier seems a fair trade. Just my opinion, though.
But it doesn't change the fact that
in the end
you have a big chance of ending up with a town full of unrestricted roles against the mafia. Maybe in a micro it would work, but in larger games with more days I don't see this working. The point is you remove a part of the random factor from the role distribution.

Also, I originally intended to separate mods in positive, negative and restrictive or neutral. With each having its own chance of being selected. I've abandoned it because the 1 mod system was easier to script, but I think I prefer it this way.
