Because Merlins know who is scum and scum need to find the Merlins, so the townies want to make it look like they could be Merlin, and Merlin's want to try and hide their identity. If you're vanilla, you don't want to say too much to give away that you don't know who is scum. If you're Merlin, you don't want to say too much to give away that you do know who the scum is, but obviously enough to signal to your fellow Merlins.

When I realised that was the mechanic, I was just worried about fking it all up for everybody which is why I've been a bit less engaged.
