SETUP RULES

  • A game will be played with as many players as would like to sign up. I require that there be at least 15 players signed up to play before we begin.
  • Players are welcome to join whenever they'd like, but any player that starts after the first round has ended will start on the same level as the player in last place.

DA RULES (shamelessly stolen from Xalxe)

Wheaton's Law

Don't be a dick.

Object
  • The player with the lowest position when one player reaches the highest position (position seven) is the winner. If more than one player is tied for the winning position, those who've reached position seven are out of the game and the rest will continue until there is a clear winner.

How to Play
  • A category will be given each round such as "Name Five Fruits" or "Which Player Reads the Most Novels." All players must then PM me their choices as answers for the current category.
  • I will give a deadline for PM submissions of your answers and, at deadline, will post them all. The point is not to give the correct answer(s), but to give the most popular answer(s).
  • Outside help (e.g. Internet searching and/or discussion of the current topic with other players) is
    disallowed
; answers must be actual attempts to fit the category -- none of this giving of answers that don't fit just for laughs or to match others outside of the category.
  • If a player plans to be away from the website for a period of time, they are allowed to PM me in advance so that I may send them upcoming question(s) to answer preemptively.
  • Players that do not submit answers before the deadline will automatically drop a position in addition to the player with the lowest score. All players are given three "strikes". If you do not submit your answers before the deadline on three occasions, you will be dropped from the competition officially (although you are still welcome to continue playing for fun).
  • At least one in every three questions will be a question with either a binary choice or a limited number of possible answers, to keep the game moving and hopefully provide more chances to even the playing field.

Scoring
  • All players start at the same position (position zero) and only move from this position if they have the lowest score in any given round, or fail to submit.
  • If there is a tie for least number of points, all those involved in the tie move forward. If all players tie, all will move forward.
  • Players score zero points if they give an answer that matches no other player during a round.
  • Players that give the same answer score a total amount of points equivalent to the number of players that also gave that answer.

Example Play
Xalxe wrote:Okay! Everyone, PM me five fruits. Your deadline is 3 days... go!
Eloritu to Xalxe via PM wrote:hmmm... my answers are
apple, banana, cherry, grape and pineapple
!

Thanks for bringing this game back, btw. You're a great mod and I love you.
Desna to Xalxe via PM wrote:As the god of freedom I think everybody should be free to eat as much fruit as they wish.

Pineapple, apple, banana, strawberry and blueberry
Hylax to Xalxe via PM wrote:lmao fruits are hard

Let's go with
Apple, grape, banana, cherry and kumquat
.

nom nom fruit flies
Xalxe wrote:All three players have got their answers in. Here are the totals.

Apple (3) - Desna, Eloritu, Hylax
Banana (3) - Desna, Eloritu, Hylax
Cherry (2) - Eloritu, Hylax
Grape (2) - Eloritu, Hylax
Pineapple (2) - Desna, Eloritu

Non-Scoring Answers
Blueberry - Desna
Kumquat - Hylax
Strawberry - Desna

Eloritu scored 12 points.
Hylax scored 10 points.
Desna scored 8 points.

Desna moves down a position this round for having the lowest score.

WWYT XV is now underway! To /in, all you have to do is PM me your response to this question:

Q1: Name five people on this site who are fun to play with.

Once I have 15 signups, I will set a timer for 48 hours; future rounds will have a 72-hour timer. While not required, it helps me if you start the subject line of your PM with "What Were You Thinking", "Re: What Were You Thinking" or "WWYT"—that will sort your PM in the folder I have created for this game.

PookyTheMagicalBear: Aureal

Searl: Cheery Dog

Xalxe: JerryArr

Irrelevant players

DragonEater70 (7): Dannflor, the worst, Firebringer, Datisi, fireisredsir
StrangerCoug (8): DragonEater70, biancospino, StrangerCoug, Ircher, DeasVail

DragonEater70 wanted only to spectate, so he is not being officially counted as in.

Don't feel bad if two people didn't pick you and/or you picked somebody nobody else did: I think all 15 of you are fun to play with, as are all of your choices. Picking just five was the hard part.

The wide variety of answers prevented anybody from starting out with a perfect score, but DeasVail came the closest with 25 points.
Aureal has the lowest score with only 4 points and is our first drop to level 1.

Non-scoring answers

Archery: Cheery Dog
Bobsled: N
Clay pigeon shooting: biancospino
Cycling: DeasVail
High jump: biancospino
Hockey: Aureal
Hurdles: Searl
Javelin: Searl
Pentathlon: biancospino
Running: DeasVail
Shot put: mallowgeno
Table tennis: mallowgeno
Triathlon: mallowgeno
Triple jump: Searl
Volleyball: Ircher
Weightlifting: imaginality
Wrestling: racefan12

Irrelevant players

StrangerCoug (19): Biathlon, Swimming, Gymnastics, Figure skating, Wrestling

Datisi answered with more than one running event and several people answered with multiple track and field events (with Searl's submission consisting entirely of them), so specific running or track events couldn't be merged into the general categories. I did, however, grant you the benefit of the doubt if you just said 100m—there are 100m swimming events, but nobody answered with a specific one.

Datisi takes home the gold this question with 28 points, just one point shy of a perfect score.
mallowgeno is the lowest score and drops to level 1.
Charles510 failed to submit, so he gets an activity strike and also drops to level 1.

Our unscientific survey says...

Q3: Does a hot dog count as a sandwich?

No (8):
Aureal, Cheery Dog, Ircher, Jake The Wolfie, mallowgeno, racefan12, Searl, tris
Yes (6):
biancospino, Datisi, DeasVail, imaginality, JerryArr, N

Irrelevant players

StrangerCoug (8): No

We had an almost even split here! We had a player fail to submit, but we do have a majority among those who did submit, so I'm not dropping everybody down a level this question—only seven of you (counting the player who didn't submit):

biancospino, Datisi, DeasVail, imaginality, JerryArr, and N drop to level 1.
Charles510 fails to submit and so gets his second activity strike and drops to level 2. If he fails to submit again, he will be eliminated.

Q4: Name three things to which people get addicted.

Alcohol/Drinking (10):
Aureal, biancospino, Cheery Dog, Datisi, DeasVail, imaginality, Ircher, JerryArr, N, Searl
Drugs (8):
DeasVail, imaginality, Ircher, Jake The Wolfie, JerryArr, mallowgeno, racefan12, tris
Gambling (6):
Aureal, Datisi, imaginality, Jake The Wolfie, Searl, tris
Tobacco/Smoking (6):
Aureal, biancospino, Cheery Dog, mallowgeno, N, Searl
Coffee/Caffeine (2):
Datisi, racefan12
Sugar (2):
biancospino, racefan12
Video games (2):
Ircher, tris

Non-scoring answers

Internet: DeasVail
Mafia: Cheery Dog
Meth: N
Porn: mallowgeno
Sex: Jake The Wolfie
TV/Streaming shows: JerryArr

Irrelevant players

DragonEater70 (14): Mafia, Drugs, Smoking
StrangerCoug (22): Tobacco, Alcohol, Gambling

Everybody who answered with "drugs" except Jake The Wolfie and tris also put a specific drug (I merged racefan12's answer of "caffeine" with biancospino's answer of "coffee"), so I couldn't merge the latter into the former.

imaginality has our first perfect score with an open-ended question this iteration, getting 24 points.
racefan12 has the lowest score and drops to level 1.
Charles510 has received his third activity strike and has therefore been eliminated. He may resume submitting responses if he comes back, but he will be counted as an irrelevant player, and any latecomers will be started on level 3 until someone drops below that.

Well, well, well! In WWYT XIV, the first binary question had an even split and the second binary question had unanimity. This time around, the first binary question
almost
had an even split and this question
almost
had unanimity. We only have one member of the lonely hearts club I have to drop, and that is Cheery Dog, who goes to level 2.

It's a
tick
early, but everybody's submitted, I'm off work now, and there's not much time left to change answers anyway, so why not?

Q7: Name three articles of clothing that are no longer commonly worn.

Corset (6):
Aureal, biancospino, Datisi, imaginality, N, tris
Suspenders (5):
Cheery Dog, DeasVail, imaginality, JerryArr, N
(Top) Hat (5):
Cheery Dog, Jake The Wolfie, JerryArr, racefan12, tris
Chain mail/Armor (3):
biancospino, Ircher, Searl
(Puffer) Vest (3):
DeasVail, mallowgeno, racefan12
Toga (3):
Aureal, Datisi, Jake The Wolfie
Bell-bottoms (2):
Aureal, biancospino
(Bow) Tie (2):
Cheery Dog, racefan12
Monocle (2):
mallowgeno, tris
Petticoat (2):
imaginality, Ircher

Non-scoring answers

Bonnet: mallowgeno
Codpiece: N
Cufflinks: DeasVail
Fanny pack: Ircher
Kimono: Datisi
Loincloth: Jake The Wolfie
Spats: JerryArr
Tunic: Searl
UGG boots: Searl

Irrelevant players

StrangerCoug (13): Corset, Monocle, Top hat

A couple of people—I didn't keep track who—sent me an apology to Haschel Cedricson for their suspenders answer. I haven't met any scummers in person to date (I'm kind of a recluse :P ), so I don't know his style tastes.

No perfects, but we do have two players in contention who got the highest score with 13 points (imaginality and tris), a feat that yours truly also achieved.
Searl got the lowest score with 3 points and drops to level
2
, no, just 1.

Be abolished (9):
Cheery Dog, imaginality, Ircher, Jake The Wolfie, JerryArr, mallowgeno, racefan12, Searl, tris
Become permanent (4):
Aureal, biancospino, Datisi, N

Non-scoring answers

Remain as is: DeasVail

Irrelevant players

Charles510 (4): Become permanent
StrangerCoug (4): Become permanent This is what I get for lying and misjudging what the most popular answer would be; I don't support DST either

The majority of you want to be rid of DST, but since it's only DeasVail that wants to keep changing his clock, let's change it so he drops to level 2.

In post 71, Aureal wrote: Wow, why do you all love it getting dark at 4:30pm in early November? Do you like going home from work in the dark? DST is awesome and going back to standard time and having it suddenly getting dark an hour earlier SUCKS. The only thing worse would be it getting dark that early even MORE of the year because DST didn't exist at all.
About how far north are you? The sun wouldn't set that early in San Antonio even without DST; 5:37 PM is the earliest sunset I can find on timeanddate.com for 2024 here.

My big concern is children going to school in the dark, but I can be talked into supporting having DST all year long if school starts later to compensate (no earlier than 8:00 AM without DST or 9:00 AM with). The sun can rise as late as about 7:30 AM in the winter here.

Jake The Wolfie was the only player who failed to get the top answer and who had three goose eggs. With only 15 points, he is shaken off the top and drops to level 1.

Only Ircher and tris remain at the top. Will one of them win?

Q11: Name three famous landmarks of religious significance.

Mecca/Kaaba (8):
Aureal, biancospino, Datisi, DeasVail, Jake The Wolfie, JerryArr, N, tris
Christ the Redeemer (6):
Aureal, imaginality, JerryArr, mallowgeno, racefan12, Searl
Notre Dame (6):
Aureal, Cheery Dog, imaginality, JerryArr, racefan12, tris
St. Peter's Basilica (3):
biancospino, imaginality, mallowgeno
Vatican City/Holy See (3):
Cheery Dog, Jake The Wolfie, N
Great Pyramids of Giza (2):
Cheery Dog, Searl
Hagia Sophia (2):
Ircher, Jake The Wolfie
Taj Mahal (2):
DeasVail, N

Non-scoring answers

Angkor Wat: racefan12
Auschwitz: Datisi
Dome of the Rock: mallowgeno
Mont-Saint-Michel: Ircher
Mt. Sinai: biancospino
Parthenon: tris
Sistine Chapel: DeasVail
St. John's Cathedral: Searl
Stonehenge: Ircher
Wailing Wall: Datisi

Irrelevant players

DragonEater70 (10): Hagia Sophia, Mecca, Western Wall
StrangerCoug (9): Notre Dame, Dome of the Rock, St. Peter's Basilica

I thought Charles510 submitted answers for this question, but if he did, I accidentally deleted them. If he still has them, I will add them here.

Aureal and JerryArr tie for the top score this question with 20, a perfect score!
With only one scoring answer, and just barely, Ircher has the lowest score with 2 and drops to level 1. That leaves only tris on level 0—can she hold on to her position until someone officially drops to level 7?

Edit:
Corrected the scores in the spreadsheet; they were correct above.

:?: :?:

8+6+6=20 or 17?
It looks like there's an error in the spreadsheet; I will hunt it down in the morning.
I found it; it's erroneously scoring as if you didn't submit at all. Will restore in the morning.

Primarily because the Sistine Chapel is also in the Vatican and is not the same thing as St. Peter's Basilica. I'm open to discussion as to whether all three should be grouped together, but it won't affect the lowest score.

Assuming we do not group the Vatican City, St. Peter's Basilica, and the Sistine Chapel all together; these should be the corrected Q11 scores:

This will be reflected in the OP in the next update, and post 88 will be edited to reflect that Aureal and Ircher got a perfect score.

is this because of me? i couldn't remember the actual name so i specified it's in mecca.
oh, could i have said, "the Jesus statue at Rio de Janero"? would that have counted?
If I could tell you were referring to Christ the Redeemer, then yes, I would have. Datisi wasn't sure of the English name of the Wailing Wall, so I used the Croatian name he gave me to figure out what he was trying to say.
