Game Specific Rules:

This game will take place in two threads: On Camera and Off Stage. Each player will only be allowed to post in one of these threads at any given time, with the exception of certain Job abilities. Off Stage, each player is an Actor. Your Actor name is hidden, and it may or may not be in your best interest to keep it that way. There are two main alignments among the Actors (there may or may not be other alignments): Innocent, and [Something Else]. The [Something Else] alignment is trying to interfere with the filming of City of Angels. On Camera, each player has a Role.

Rather than Days, the game is broken into Scenes. At the beginning of each Scene, some of the Actors will assume their On Camera Roles. They will no longer be able to view the Off Stage thread, which will be in a private forum (the On Camera thread will be viewable by all).

On Camera:

The primary game mechanic On Camera is the Decision. The Roles will have to choose between two or more alternatives: some good, some bad. In order to help them choose, one of the Roles will be an Advocate. The Advocate will have some information which will be helpful in making a good decision; however, if the Advocate is played by a [Something Else] Actor, he/she may try to mislead you. During the Scene, the Roles will discuss and vote on which alternative to take.

Scene 1 is special in that it has two Advocates, assigned at random before the game. However, the Advocate for each other Scene, as well as the outcome of each alternative in every Scene, will be chosen by the [Something Else] alignment. Thus, in addition to the information the Advocate(s) may have, any [Something Else] Actors in a Scene will have full knowledge of the choices, and can - if they choose - attempt to push the vote in the wrong direction.

It is hoped that players will post in character while On Camera.

Roles will be randomly assigned independently from Actors, and will be known at all times.

Off Stage:

Meanwhile, Off Stage, the remaining Actors may discuss and lynch as normal. Some Actors have Jobs. Depending on the Job, the Job's ability might be used between Scenes, or during a Scene (and therefore only while that Actor is Off Stage). When an Actor is lynched or killed, their name and alignment will be revealed.

Endgame:

After Scene 7, the Endgame will begin. In all cases, the [Something Else] alignment will choose 7 living Roles - 2 played by [Something Else] Actors, 5 played by Innocent Actors. These Roles will play On Camera until one side or the other is eliminated. The specifics of the Endgame will depend on the number of good/bad alternatives chosen; the more good choices made, the harder it will be on [Something Else], and the more bad choices made, the harder it will be on the Innocents.

Endgame will happen early if the number of Actors on either side hits the minimum required (2 [Something Else], 5 Innocent). In this case, the alignment triggering Endgame will be put in the worst Endgame setup for them.

Timing

The game will start Pre-Scene 1, in order to allow the Director to assign Roles to go On Camera for Scene 1. Scenes will last a minimum of 72 hours and a maximum of 2 weeks. They will end early if a majority is reached on the Decision; otherwise, the alternative will be chosen by comparing preference lists (for Decisions with more than two alternatives; see voting below), or most votes.

Lynches will be decided by a majority vote, if one is reached before the end of the Scene. If the deadline hits, or if the Scene ends early, the lynch will be determined by the Condorcet method (see voting below).

"Night" (between Scenes) will last a minimum of 48 hours and a maximum of 72 hours. Choices not received before the deadline will be determined randomly. Players are encouraged to send choices early, where possible.

Participation

All players must post at least an average of once every 48 hours for each game day (unless day lasts less than 72 hours), and must not go longer than 72 hours (within a single game day) without posting. For the purposes of this rule, posts shorter than 25 words (beyond voting/unvoting and quotes) and consecutive posts do not count (shorter and/or consecutive posts are allowed, they just don't count toward the minimum), but the "clock" on the 72 hour rule will stop during Sundays (GMT).

Players will receive strikes for failing to meet either posting requirement. For the per day average rule, a strike will be given for each post under the required average. For the 72 hour rule, a strike will be good for a 24 hour extension - further lack of posting will result in another strike.

Anyone receiving three strikes by this rule for any reason will be replaced ASAP if there is a replacement available, and will otherwise be modkilled.

Because of the nature of this setup, I will not wait for replacements - modkills will not hurt the balance of this game as much as a normal game.

If something unexpected comes up in the middle of the game, notify the moderator ASAP.

Post Content

Voting and Unvoting should be posted in bold at the bottom (end) of the post. Unambiguous misspellings will be counted as if they were correct.

Except where allowed by a Job, only the following tags are allowed Off Stage: Bold (for votes and unvotes), Italics and Underline (for emphasis), List, Quote, and URL.

On Camera, only Bold (for decision votes and unvotes) and Italics (for emphasis) are allowed.

Do not quote the moderator. If claiming information from your role PM, you are allowed to state your Actor Name word-for-word, but you must paraphrase your Abilities. Alignment and Win Condition is given in the sample role PM for innocents; other alignments may quote these if they determine it is to their advantage to do so.

Questions should not be directed to the moderator in the thread. If you have any question about the game, ask it by PM. If it is something that everyone needs to be aware of, the mod will make a public announcement.

Addition:

If you are part of a hydra, quoting small amounts of material (1-2 paragraphs) from your intrahydra communication (PM, quicktopic) is acceptable. Anything longer than that should be paraphrased, or cleared with the moderator first.

Voting

In addition to the normal voting/unvoting procedure, players may include a preference list with their votes (Off Stage, or On Camera if there are more than two alternatives for the Scene's Decision). For example:

The example list expresses a preference to lynch G first, then K if G is not an option, then L, then no one, then P (and then anyone else that is alive, with equal preference). Unless they explicitly state otherwise, it will be assumed that all players list themselves as the last option.

If, at the end of the Scene, no one has reached a majority of votes (Off Stage) or no alternative has reached a majority of votes (On Camera), all posted lists and votes will be compared to determine a Condorcet winner. Each option (all players, and no lynch) is pair-wise compared with every other option to determine the group preference between just those two options.

If a single option beats every other option in these pairings, that option is the Condorcet winner, and is lynched (Off Stage) or chosen (On Camera). If there is no Condorcet winner, no one is lynched, and the worst-for-the-Innocents alternative will be chosen from the Smith Set (the minimal set of alternatives which beat every alternative outside the set).

(If that's confusing... well, hopefully it will encourage you to reach a majority.)

General Rules

1. Have fun, and don't be a jerk.
2.

Read all the rules carefully and make sure you will be able to follow them. Unexpected things do come up, and in that case, let the moderator know as soon as possible so a replacement can be found, but if you just flake, expect to be barred from future mith games for a while.

3. No editing or deleting your posts.
4. No invisible text; no extraneous formatting tags.
5. When you're dead, you're dead. No posting in the game threads until the game is over, unless your role specifies otherwise. This includes "Bah!" posts.
6. No talking outside the thread, unless your role explicitly allows it.
7. No talking in the thread at night, even if the mod forgets to close it.

It is Pre-Game. Actor PMs will be going out shortly. When you have received your Role PM, confirm by posting in this thread. During the Pre-Game, any Actors with communication abilities may use them. The Director (MafiaJin) will select four Roles to appear in Scene 1, in addition to the five listed.

Pre-Game will last a minimum of 48 hours. Because Mr. Grey will be away this weekend, Scene 1 may not start until Sunday night. When Scene 1 begins, this forum will be unviewable by On Camera Actors.

Your Actor name is what you received in your PM. Your Role name is what is listed in the On Camera thread.

On Camera Actors cannot be lynched by those Off Stage.

Scenes will last a minimum of 72 hours and a maximum of 2 weeks. If the On Camera group reaches a majority on a Decision before the 2 weeks is up, the Scene will end, which will act just like a deadline for the Off Stage group - if a majority has not been reached, preference lists will be used to determine a Condorcet winner, who will be lynched, or if there is no Condorcet winner no one will be lynched. If a majority is reached Off Stage first, the lynch will happen and those Off Stage can continue discussing until the Decision is made On Camera.

Between Scenes, everyone (living) will be here, and can discuss the goings on. The Director will privately decide on extra Roles to include in the next Scene, the PNIA will decide on an Advocate (which may take the place of one or two of the Roles chosen by the Director, if they so choose), and any other Abilities, Job or otherwise, can be used.

Some Jobs (and possibly other Abilities) can be used during Scenes, whether or not the player using them is On Camera or Off Stage. I've added some clarification to the Job descriptions. All Job information is public, except for the identity of the Assistant Producer.

As the actors come off stage, Mr. Grey is sitting in his chair with his head cradled in his hands. His assistant walks over to see what is the matter.

"Sir? Is there something wrong?"

Mr. Grey looks up and gives her a nasty look.

"Something wrong? Something wrong?!"

"Sir?"

"Everything is wrong! The time travel thing is so overdone...."

"I thought we were always planning to do a time travel bit..."

"Well, yes, but not yet! And who hired Scott Bakula?"

"He has experience with this sort of thing..."

"Well, he... ok, he did some pretty good acting, I'll admit, much better than some of the rubbish from our main characters, but he was just so out of place."

"It all flowed naturally from pushing the button, though..."

"That's the problem, isn't it. They shouldn't have pushed the button. And now we've got to use this film, no time to shoot it over. To put our audience through Scott Bakula and his silly costume..."

"I do like a man in uniform. Sir."

Mr. Grey turns to the dead body on the ground. He inspects it closely.

"Great. Just great. I was hoping that at least you people got rid of one of our apparent saboteurs. Can't you people do anything right?"

Mr. Grey is yelling at a small group including two members of the camera crew and an editor. Most of the rest of the film crew are careful not to glance in that direction for fear of Mr. Grey making eye contact and turning his fury on them.

Mr. Grey's assistant is either very brave or very stupid, because she walks right over and eases into a position next to Mr. Grey's right shoulder.

"Sir? Is there another problem?"

"Of course there is! These idiots have...

misplaced

some footage. And don't patronize me."

"I... sir, I would never patronize you, sir. If my tone suggested... I suppose I am as frustrated with the problems we have been having as you must be, Mr. Grey."

"I doubt that."

"What footage is missing?"

"Those last few pieces of scene four that we filmed, and some of the stuff we've already shot for scene five."

Indeed, half of the actors are on the bar set, waiting for filming to resume.

"Ok, sir. I'm sure they'll turn up. And we'll get them in their proper place in the film."

"They had better turn up. Either someone is out to sabotage this film, or someone is very careless and lazy."

The final vote is cast, and the actor called Gaspar has taken the whole thing rather well. Not only is he - or is it she? - not attempting to escape, Gaspar has been silently knitting together a noose out of alfa grass. One of the others doesn't understand this apparent disinterest in personal well-being, and asks:

"Don't you care that we are going to kill you?"

"No."

"What? Why not?"

"Because you aren't going to kill me."

"Yes we are!"

"No. I have a contract. The only person allowed to kill me is sitting in that chair over there."

Gaspar points directly at the producer's chair. As if on cue, Mr. Grey turns to look at the tiny mob and smiles.

Meanwhile, one of the actors, who has at some point decided he is a furry and taken to wearing an outfit that makes him look like a giant teddy bear, has decided he has had enough. He keeps dozing off, and Mr. Grey's charming assistant keeps poking him to try to wake him up. He finally just walks off the set.

He is halfway to the parking lot where his car waits when a voice speaks behind him.

"You didn't think we would just let you leave after what you've tried to do, did you?"

Before he can even turn around to see who is speaking, two shots fire out and rip through the back of his skull, sending pieces of brain flying onto pavement and a nearby wall. He collapses, dead before he hits the ground, not even hearing the echo of the gunshot in the alley.

Mr. Grey's assistant walks over to the corpse and rolls it over. She reaches down to grab one hand and press the thumb against a fingerprint scanner. Satisfied that she has determined his identity, she drops the lifeless hand and walks back to the set.

Mr. Grey brings Gaspar to a private office and sits him down.

"I have been waiting a long time for this, you know."

"I'm sure you have."

Mr. Grey opens a desk drawer and pulls out an ordinary deck of cards. He begins to shuffle them as he speaks.

"You know, there are religions that believe in reincarnation, but I don't know of any that allow a soul to move from one body to another before the first has even died. A clever trick, no doubt."

"It has taken its toll."

"You haven't been quite yourself recently, true. Do you like the film?"

"I wasn't too happy with the car scene. But my previous hosts are still alive and kicking, so I can't complain too much."

"I am under the impression that your current form has a thing for poker. Shall we play a hand?"

"The stakes?"

"High."

"My life?"

"Not exactly. I am going to kill you either way. A stake to the heart would be appropriate, don't you think?"

"What, then?"

Mr. Grey sets aside the deck of cards momentarily, picks up a pen, and scribbles out a sentence on a piece of paper. He slides the paper across to Gaspar, who reads it, looks up, and immediately nods before picking up the piece of paper, pulling out a lighter from his pocket, and setting it on fire.

Mr. Grey slides the deck toward him and Gaspar cuts the cards.

The actor going by the name "sottyrulez" pounds on the door to Mr. Grey's office. There is no answer. The actor doesn't want to make Mr. Grey angry - he has seen enough to know that that is a bad idea - but as he grows impatient he raises his fist to hit the door again.

There is an inhuman scream from inside the office which startles him, and the fist never hits the door. After a few more moments, the door opens, and Mr. Grey appears.

"Can I help you?"

"Uh... I want a bigger role in this movie!"

"Your role is just as important as anyone's."

"I want to be a star! And an internet poll which I had my viewers ballot-stuff says it's what the people want, too!"

"No."

"That's it. I'm putting you On Notice."

sottyrulez, walks over to his dressing room and pulls out a large board with a list of seemingly unconnected items on it, such as "Golf", "Chestnuts", and "The Isle of Wight". He takes a card reading "Mr. Grey" and slides it into the appropriate slot.

"There, what do you think of that?"

Before Mr. Grey can respond, another giant board, this one with the label "Dead to Me", comes rolling out of nowhere and crushes sottyrulez against a wall.

"That board... is surprising... ly heavy..."

And he dies.

Mr. Grey is not pleased. Not one bit.

Another of his actors is dead. That's half now, though a couple of those weren't supposed to be involved in the movie in the first place. And this one was that annoying "I see dead people" kid, all grown up. Would've made more sense for him to appear in the second film, actually.

Someone has ordered pizza, and it's Pizza Hut. Mr. Grey prefers Papa John's.

A girl scout came on set during the scene and talked him into buying some sort of raffle ticket. Mr. Grey knows he isn't going to win anything, and he is already upset about that, too.

And the scene was just dreadful. All that precious runtime wasted arguing about a bingo ball, and for what? They picked a ball that had already been called? Mr. Grey has spared no expense on extras, but they aren't good enough actors to ad lib their way out of

that

. How could they, when every shot of the bingo cards clearly showed the number had already been marked?

At least they got to do the big explosion. Mr. Grey's producer's yacht docks on the island, and thunder rumbles in the distance. There is going to be a storm tonight... and not the kind with rain...

Mr. Grey stands in front of the mansion set, looking out over the edge of the cliff into the valley below both as part of the shot for the current scene and to watch the acting down below, though he can only hear the actors through the audio equipment relaying the sound to the speakers behind him. After the crew signals that they have got the shot of him needed, Mr. Grey's Assistant walks up to him, still in the heavy makeup she was wearing for the helicopter/coffin scene.

"Is something the matter, sir? You seem... troubled."

"The film and other... matters... nothing is going well."

"I'm certain it will be fine. Can I get you anything?"

"No. Wait, yes. A scotch."

His assistant nods and goes in search of the good stuff. Mr. Grey glances at the three actors not participating in this scene, and then turns his attention back to the valley...

Lickity Split

Mr. Grey is only vaguely aware of the voice behind him, as the one referred to throughout filming as "ShadowLurker" begins to discuss a plan of action. The view before him is picturesque; it has been too long since he visited the mansion set, and the only thing close in his recent memory was the view surrounding the New Zealand hotel he stayed at on his vacation two years ago.

Mr. Grey's attention is grabbed, however, when he hears:

"Wait! Hey, what are you guys doing? This isn't funny! Eck!"

Mr. Grey frowns and turns to see that the other two actors off camera have already wrapped a noose around ShadowLurker's neck and are choking him with it. The neck snaps, and the body goes limp.

Mr. Grey looks back to the valley below, making a quick mental count. Seven, right. And two left here. He glances down at a note from his assistant. That means... five left. Five honest crew members...

He reaches into a pocket and pulls out an iPhone. He touches through to his apps and finds the "Emergency Plot Twist" app. He pauses momentarily, then presses the button on the screen...
