Mafia Scum Classic Arcade (AND THE WINNER IS...)

Welcome to the Mafia Scum Arcade! This game is open to whomever and you may compete whenever! Each week there will be a different "classic arcade game". These might not all be arcade games but they will be classic in some sense.

Players will post a screenshot with their score on this page to enter the leader board

. Scores may be submitted and resubmitted if a player does better. The player that gets the

High Score

will receive 100 points. Every other player will have their score divided by the weekly

High Score

and multiplied by 100. That will be their score for the week. In addition the top 3 scorers will receive bonus points. (For example, Dean scores the high score of 120,000 points. Juliet scores 65,000 points. Dean will score 100 points while Juliet will score 54.17 points ([65,000/120,000]*100). Dean will also score bonus points for having the high score.)

After 8 weeks the top 8 scorers will face off in a knockout game. The top 4 scorers will move on to a duel against one other player. The final 2 will then face off and see who becomes the ultimate champion!

I'm sorry for the confusion, wouldn't a percentage just be the same thing?

Say someone is a beast at Tetris and scores 100,000 points. And then I suck and get 10,000. I would only score 10 points ([10,000/100,000]*100) while they would get 100 points.

So I've heard a couple different objections to scoring in the rules. Some people have said that someone scoring 400,000 isn't ten times harder than score 40,000 but it would net you ten times the points.

On the other hand I want to reward players who have high scores. So I am debating switching the scoring. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments? I was thinking of giving first place 200 points, 2nd place 190, 3rd place 180, etc. The only problem with this is that someone who scores much much higher than the rest doesn't benefit from furthering their score.

What are people's thoughts?

For this game, take the square root of everyone's scores. The scoring progression is quadratic, so that'll equalise it.

That's fine for this one but will I have to finagle it for the others? Also would I still take each players scores and divide them by the high scorer after taking the square root?

I will take some suggestions but I like this idea of the straight scale as long as there's a little bit of a gap for the first few highest scorers.

I will keep this discussion open tomorrow and then will assign points tomorrow night based on what we decide.

That works if everyone participates every week, but at that point it's basically just the same as "score one point for every person you beat, highest score wins"?

Otherwise you get an advantage for not participating.

Yeah I thought about doing this system JDGA but implosion is right, you get a big advantage by not participating. You COULD penalize players who don't submit a week but that seems harsh. I think the points system you suggested is the best way to do it. I will hammer out some numbers tomorrow unless you guys have suggestions. I think maybe doing 50-42-35-29-24-20-17-15-14-13 12-11-etc might work? Anyone have any problem with this?

Can't really figure out how exactly the timer works, and this is not the greatest game for a trackpad.

There's a certain point where you cannot just do matches of 3 anymore, the timer will fall anyway. The curve gets real hard real fast

What I still haven't figured out is if the speed of the timer is a function of 1) just the amount of time you've spent playing the game, 2) the number of bonuses you've achieved, or 3) the amount of time spent on a particular level. Likely it's some combination of the three, but I'm not surely exactly how it is determined.

I'm pretty sure it's the level you are on. It gets less and less tolerant the further on you go. It could be #1 though too.

Week 5

- Donkey Kong Link

Donkey Kong is one of the earliest arcade games to have platforming. It was a groundbreaking game that was one of the first to use graphics as a means of characterization and included cut scenes to forward the plot. Donkey Kong steals Pauline (originally known as Lady) and you play as the hero (later named Jumpman, then Mario). Fun fact, most computer ports had the cement factory level (50m) while most console versions do not. This version will not include the cement factory level.

For this competition you may choose either 1Player Game A or 1Player Game B. 1Player Game A is easier and when you beat Donkey Kong the first time it will begin where 1Player Game B starts. Therefore 1Player Game B starts on a harder difficulty. It's up to you to determine if you want to start harder or easier. The final score is what you will need to enter the leader board. You may submit as many times as you wish until the deadline.

- World's Hardest Game Link

Time to wrap this up with a doozy of a challenge. The World's Hardest Game might not actually BE the hardest game, but it certainly is challenging. The only way to submit a high score on the site itself is to actually beat it. However for this match we will be more lenient.

You will play this game until you have lost 100 lives. Once your death count is 100 you must stop and take a screenshot. If you want to try again you must start over. HOWEVER I will also need a screenshot of your best 50 lives as well in case of a tie. Again this will only be used in the case of a tie. This was much fun - the amount of fun varied from week to week a lot though with the games. I enjoyed tetris and snake a lot for instance, but in weeks with games i found boring i generally just made like a half hour or an hour of attempts and submitted what I got (i.e. bejewled, qwop). I liked how the scoring system worked out but it ultimately rewards activity so would have been better with more people more active, of course.

It might be interesting to have a large pool of games and have people vote on them for some amount of time, and have the actual games chosen reflect the votes with the higher-voted games coming in later and later weeks and the most-voted game being the finale.

Or maybe like there could be a couple options for a game the next week and whichever game got more votes would be played. So Week 1 would be Tetris but Week 2 players would vote between Snake and Simon for example, the one with more votes would be played? Is that what you mean? I like that idea.

That being said games won't cater to everyone and some people might enjoy other games more. I tried to pick a wide variety of games that hit different skills. That being said I f'd up on a couple with them just being on Chrome or not on MAC and I will definitely bear that in mind in the future.

As far as the activity, I mean yeah you gotta be active to get points. It seems like that is most fair. And challenges run for a week so you should have plenty of time to at least complete one.

Another idea for activity would be you drop your lowest score. So if you forgot to submit one week or really don't like the game then you would just drop that score. But I don't want that to hurt activity levels though.

The only problem I see with that is that players will just try and get good for the other games that will be revealed. I want the idea to be kind of like you get better as the week progresses
