In theory (at least based on the fact that cops are quite common), it was a "bad move" - but he got lucky and it directly resulted in the scum winning the game.

That's a good question, actually. Since Phoebus isn't around to adjudicate, we can look back in history:

• The original nomination for a newbie was (I believe) informally by Alexander in 2006. No one discussed time-limits then, but Kelly had under 3 months' experience at the time.
  
• I then nominated viper0933, who had less than two months' experience at the time (no one seconded).
  
• Thok nominated Sarcastro in August 2006, when Sarc. had about three months' experience.

Kelly Chen won.

Looking at the 2007 nominations, The Fonz had 3 months, Kison had ~8 months, White had ~ a month and a half, Dale_Crompton had 3 1/2 months, Shanba had ten months, Erg0 had just over 7 months, and DogMom had just under 7 months, at the time they were respectively nominated.

::edit:: Oh, and Muerrto was nominated for Best Protown when he'd been here three months, and Whome? got nominated with less than two months, and Sudo with just over two months.

I think on a site more than five years old, having started in the past calendar year would make you eligible for a Newbie Award. *shrug*

so his scumbuddy (a mafia don) claimed cop on day one, and later that day Atticus was facing a lynch and claimed cop himself. That strikes me as a player attempting a desperate gambit that somehow managed to pay off against overwhelming odds -- did he somehow deduce on day 1 that there wasn't a real cop who could counter-claim? If not, I'm not sure his claim was a good claim, let alone a

strategy

or

outcome

Does a claim which is strategically poor but which has an excellent outcome qualify for "Best Claim"?

nope. He managed to survive and win, I think that is probably reward enough.

I'm with Adel on this, unfortunatly. I think best claim is some of the really good, strategic, imaginative ones. I've cop claimed several times (in newbies mostly) and won games on them. Wonderful result, definatly not worthy of a scummy though.

Also, since we only give out awards every year, its unfair to punish someone for joining early in the year by saying they can't be best newbie later. Vollkan has been awesome for Months and months (curse that dayvig!).

Okay then. I wasn't certain what the criteria for "best" was exactly - but the view seems to be that it has to be particularly good in the strategic sense. So...er...

The best newbie award was before then, I'm pretty sure of that... it was definitely awarded to, um,

someone

the year before at least.

Best newbie is the award for the best new player to the site. IMO, it should be based on performance

as a newbie

- so someone who played terribly in their first ten games but has played a hundred in a year and ended up awesome doesn't qualify for Best Newbie, but someone who played well as a noob and has since become an upstanding member of the community should still be eligible if they started in that Scummie year.

That's all IMO, of course.
