One moment, you're in drab human-world. The next? Colors brighten, scents are pleasantly overwhelming, and sunlight goes watery and dappled as you leave an urban landscape and enter a hitherto unnoticed, deep, inviting forest.

Legends of fairies and fairylands abound in many cultures. In this game we'll explore the the legends, cultures and landscapes of fairylands, and perhaps find commonalities that suggest a reality reflected in all the fantasy. This game's flavor is purely for your enjoyment (and mine) and has no effect whatsoever on the NewD3 setup and rules.

Setup Info

NewD3 Setup

NewD3 (as designed by RadiantCowbells):

ABC
Mafia
Mafia Roleblocker
Mafia Rolecop
Mafia Goon
Row 1
Town Cop and Town Doctor
Town Tracker and Town Friendly Neighbor
Town Cop and Vanilla Townie
Row 2
Town Jailkeeper and Town Tracker
Town Jailkeeper and Town Friendly Neighbor
Town Jailkeeper and Vanilla Townie
Row 3
Town Mason and Town Mason
Town Tracker and Town Doctor
Town Mason and Town Mason

This NewD3 Game is given a setup that incorporates one mafia role from the top of a column, and then two town roles from a row below the selected mafia role. The rows and columns are randomly selected via rolling 2 3-sided dice using the MS Dice bbcode. The remaining six roles are filled in by
one mafia goon
and
five vanilla townies
appropriately, to create a
2-mafia
and
7-town
setup.

The NewD3 setup uses the Natural Action Resolution system for determining Night action effects.
Mafia Roleblocker
action takes precedence over a
Town Jailkeeper
action, should that apply.

Mafia are able to communicate in their Private Topic at all times.

Rules:

In-Game Behavior

1.
Site Rules are in effect. Please familiarize yourself and follow them.

2. This rule is important in all MS mafia games: Do not talk about ongoing games except in the game thread and private topics that are associated with the game as provided by your game moderator. More information on this rule can be found here. Do not talk about ongoing mafia games on other sites at MS, either.

3. Posts consisting purely of insults without game content are not tolerated. I penalize such posts with a strike. Three strikes and you're out. Severe issues will be reported to the listmods.

4. Claiming scum is allowed. Claiming scum with another player (whether as a joke or not) will result in severe consequences for you, and consequences for your team.

5. Play towards your win condition. Gambits are fine, directly harming your own team is not.

6. Loophole abuse is not tolerated.

7. Have fun! There are a lot of great people who play, discuss mafia game theory and practice, and discuss life, the universe and everything, too, here at Mafiascum.net. During and after this game, please take a look around the site and get to know us. I think you'll like what you see.

Voting and Deadlines:

1. Voting must be bolded in the form
Vote: Player
- bold tags

Code: Select all

[b]Vote: Player[/b]
or

VOTE: Player vote tags

Code: Select all

[vote]Player[/vote]

or else they will not be counted. Unvotes are not required to change your vote, but they are helpful.[/b]

2. Votes inside of spoiler tags will not be counted.

3. I don't mind if you use nicknames/abbreviations when you vote someone. But if I have no idea who you're voting for, then the vote won't be counted. Please note: the vote counting application may be more finicky about nicknames than I am. If you notice that your vote hasn't been recorded, please let me know.

4. Eliminations require a majority of votes: (number of living players/2) +1, rounded down.

5. If there's no majority at deadline, there's no elimination.

6. When the hammer vote is cast, all players, including the eliminated may talk freely until the final vote count and eliminated player's card-flip have been posted. I will lock the game thread at that time.

6. Once you are dead, you may not post in the game thread again. Not even a "Bah" post.

7. Deadlines are set at 10 days on Day 1 and 7 days for subsequent game days. and Extensions may be granted if there are replacements near deadline, or under other extraordinary circumstances (e.g., site outages, major holidays).

Prods and Replacements:

Replacing Out
If you need to replace out of this game, send me a private message about it. Do NOT post that you want to be replaced, or that you have asked to be replaced in the game thread.
I will acknowledge your replacement request by replying to your PM. From that time forward, you are out of the game. Do not make any more posts in the game thread after that.

This is a site rule that can entail penalties if broken. It applies to all mafia games at Mafiascum.net unless the game moderator explicitly states otherwise.

1. Prods will be given if you do not post in
36 hours (48 hours on weekends)
.

2. You will be replaced if you either do not respond to a prod, or need to be prodded more than 3 times total. You may request for a player to be prodded at any time. Prods requested when a player has been absent for less than 36 hours do not count for replacement purposes.

3. If you are V/LA (on vacation/have limited access), make sure I know. If you are V/LA for more than a week, I suggest requesting replacement, but it's not required. If a lengthy V/LA is adversely affecting the game (e.g., if you are not able to post minimally during that time), then your mod may replace you.without penalty.

Misc.

1. Dark Blue (#004080) is the color I will use for mod posts. Please don’t use this color or otherwise try to make your posts look like mod posts.

2. You can talk about the game in the private threads given to you via PM, assuming you were given one. Otherwise, please refrain from talking about this game outside of this thread, and don't talk about other games inside of this game. This is a sitewide rule. See announcement here.

3. No editing, deleting, using invisible texts, write in code, using font sizes less than 70, etc...

4. Don't quote or talk about any mod-recieved PMs. Your flavor is for you to enjoy and you only, until the end of the game.

5. Vocaroos, Youtubes, etc, may not be used to make game-content posts. e.g., do not record a vacoroo with your thoughts about the game and post it.

6. All Private Topics (PTs) shared by two or more players during this game will be released unredacted. This pertains to Dead/Spectator PT, Mafia PT, and Mason PT (if there is one). Please keep this in mind if you have access to a shared PT.

6. I make mistakes. If you notice I make one, please let me know.

7. Questions are vastly preferable to Modkills. If you're thinking about posting or doing something that you're unsure is within the letter or spirit of these rules and the game of mafia, then ask me privately about it first.

Amid the pressure of great events, a general principle gives no help.

Introduction and Tips
Thanks to Irrelephant11 and others for their contributions to these tips.

Here are some helpful links (a lot of them from our helpful wiki):

-> Forum Rules and Guidelines
-> The Glossary
-> Commonly Used Abbreviations
-> The Newbie Guide
-> Articles on How to Play Well (be sure to check the dates these were written/updated, as good advice changes over time)

Key Concepts and Tips

Activity

Try to check in at least once a day.
Besides the activity requirements listed in the moderator's original post, it's just necessary for a fun and healthy game that everyone
plays
. If you post very rarely, or only post a little bit at a time, you may get scumread for lurking. Even if you are not scumread for it, what's the fun in playing a game where multiple people are hardly participating?

Site Meta

Meta is the description of how people on Mafiascum like to play mafia. Things can be different on other online mafia sites, or if you play IRL, so it's good to know what's expected of you on this site. These aren't "rules", per se, but if you don't follow these guidelines it is likely things will go poorly for you on MS. Some examples are...

Random Voting Stage (RVS)

Games on MafiaScum almost always begin with what we call the Random Voting Stage (RVS). At this point in the game, we are in a low information game state (except the mafia, which know everyone’s alignment). As a way to provoke reaction, start a discussion, and try to determine alignment, people will usually vote for non-serious reasons. As the discussion progresses, we will eventually get the game moving and progress out of RVS.

Voting, E-x, and Hammers

E-x is a way to convey how far away a player is away from elimination. For example, you should always announce that you are putting someone at E-1 (1 vote away from an elimination) so that someone doesn’t come along and accidentally vote for that player's elimination. This also prevents Mafia-aligned players from coming along and placing the final vote to eliminate (“hammer”) and claiming ignorance about doing so. You may also see E-2 and E-3 (2 votes away from elimination and 3 votes away from elimination, respectively).

Before you hammer a player, state your intent to hammer (usually done in bold) and ask the player to claim their role. This is done to prevent power roles from being eliminated, and can sometimes get Mafia-aligned players to be caught (via counter claiming). It's best to then allow other players to react and discuss the claim before hammering.

Claiming Your Role

It is almost always best to not claim your role unless you are at E-1 and have been asked to claim as part of an “intent to hammer.” This is because, as a town power role (“PR”), if you out prematurely, you are likely to be night-killed (“NK’d”). As a Vanilla Townie (“VT”), claiming early helps the mafia team narrow down the setup and possible PR candidates. An exception to this would be if a mafia player claimed your role, claiming early to counter the false claim (“CC”) would out the mafia player, and would be a benefit to the town.

Do not fake claim a power role as town!
While it may help you avoid getting eliminated, you might cause a real PR to out themselves by counterclaiming - then the mafia will know who the PR is, and you will probably get eliminated for lying to town. Feel free to fake a claim as scum, though, if you think it would help.

ELo

ELo is the shortened representation of “Eliminate or Lose.” ELo in the Newbie Queue is when there are 3 remaining players, 2 of which are town and 1 is mafia; or when there are 5 remaining players, 3 of which are town and 2 are mafia. It is important in these situations that the town aligned players do not carelessly vote like is done during RVS or early days, as the mafia player(s) can organize and instantly provide the necessary votes to eliminate (“quickhammer”) and win the game.

Conclusion

Mafia is hard!
As town, it can be hard to figure things out, and stressful when people think you're scum.
That's okay!
Just share your thoughts on who you think is scum as they come to you, and don't be afraid to change your mind. As scum, it can be hard to lie convincingly, and stressful when people think you're scum. Don't let that scare you! Try to think of what you would post if you were town, and don't be afraid to "change your mind".

This is a game.
Have fun!

This is the Pregame Phase. I'll send out Role Private Messages (aka Role PMs) during the next few hours. Please respond to your Role PM with your alignment (Town or Mafia) and Role Name to confirm that you have received it.

You have 48 hours from the time I send you the Role PM to respond. If you cannot respond by then, the game will start without you and you'll have an additional 24 hours in which to post before I must seek a replacement.

Once 8 of the 9 players have confirmed via PM reply and 24 hours have passed OR 48 hours after all Role PMs have been sent, whichever comes first, the game will begin!

I'll update this post as we progress through Pregame.

Image

All Role PMs
will go out shortly
have gone out!

If you would like a private topic for your personal notes about this game, please send me a PM and I'll get you set up!

The English word “fairy” (or faery) may have come from the Latin
fatum
, meaning fate and the Old French word
faeire
, meaning land of enchantment. The earliest origins of fairy legends trace back to gods and goddesses of ancient mythologies.

Day 1 is dedicated to the cultural roots of fae legends!

Ancient Egypt, dating as far back as the Protodynastic Period, had minor gods and goddesses associated with nature and places. Set was originally a god of the desert. Ash was the god of oases and vineyards. Wine jar seals of the Old Kingdom commonly bore the inscription, "I am refreshed by this Ash".

Mosaic Naiade

In Greek and Roman mythology every river and stream had its Potamoi (a minor god). There were 3000 of them. And they had 3000 sisters, Okeanides (Oceanids), goddesses of small streams, clouds and rain. They oversaw all sources of the world's water. Their daughters were the Naiades, nymphs of springs and fountains.

Slavic Fairies

In Slavic mythology there were many different types of fairies. They were considered demons, but not necessarily malign. Spring fairies were similar to Greco-Roman Naiades. Ship fairies protected ships and boats. Hill fairies lived in trees, cloud fairies lived in clouds and rain, and plant fairies lived as you'd expect. The most important way of classifying these sprites were "good" and "bad". In early Slavic folklore, fairies were described as magical creatures who appeared in groups of 3s to 9s, and didn't have individual names.

Depiction of a West African Aziza.

In West African mythology, Aziza are a "good" race of supernatural little people, much akin to European fairies. They're forest dwellers and give good luck to hunters, and are said to have introduced harnessed fire to humans. When European trade came to this area Aziza were thereafter depicted as "winged little people" sometimes.

A Mezoamerican depiction of Yucatan's Luxo'ob (Alux).

In Mayan mythology, luxo'ob are fairy-like creatures described as only about knee-high who dress in traditional Mayan garb. Luxo'ob are usually invisible but can assume physical form to communicate with (and/or frighten) humans, and to congregate in groups. They live in forests, caves, stones, and fields. And, they can be also be enticed to move somewhere specific, like a farmer's field, with offerings, especially a tiny house just for them. They like to play tricks on humans.

Simbi water spirit.

Simbi are spirits who traveled to the New World in the hearts and minds of captive West Africans who were enslaved in Haiti, Dominica, Puerto Rico, and Cuba as well as North America. Simbi are sea, river and forest spirits who can appear as humans, snakes, calabash vines, sparks of fire and mermaid-like creatures among others. They are seen as the guardians of nature and as intermediaries who travel between the physical world and the spiritual world of the ancestors. They also preserve oral histories for those they protect: stories of their ancestors and history. Compared to European fairies who are for the most part concerned with their own affairs and tend to toy with humans who cross their paths, Simbi have deep teaching and guarding connections with their human beings.

A modern rendition of an Iroquois Oh-do-was spirit.

In Iroquois mythology Jo-ga-oh (Little People, are similar in some ways to European fairies. They are invisible nature spirits divided into three tribes: Ga-hon-ga, Gan-da-yah and Oh-do-was. All three tribes are benign to humans. Ga-hon-ga are river and rock dwellers who like to invite strength competitions with each other and with humans, usually involving lifting and throwing rocks. Gan-da-ya are agricultural spirits who protect and advise fruits and grains. Oh-do-was live in the underworld, which contains deep forests and magical creatures. They prevent malign spirits from entering the human world and causing death and chaos. O-do-was also protect against snakes.

Male and female kappa statues at the Sogenji Buddhist shrine in Tokyo

In Japanese mythology, water sprites called Kappa (river boys) live in rivers and springs. They're roughly human in figure and the size of a small child. They have webbed hands and feet, a soft turtle shell on their backs, turtle-like faces, and a little bowl-like indentation on the top of their heads that holds water. If they leave the water to move about on land and their head-bowl dries out, they are profoundly weakened. So, they wear protective helmets when they venture out of the water. They like to engage in sumo wrestling. They are frequently accused of attacking humans who enter their watery domain.

Mohon

Originating in Columbian mythology, Mohon myths spread through several parts of South and Central America. Mohon is a forest and barren land spirit, and is associated with spirits of the dead and shamanism. In some legends Mohon is a satyr-like being who lives in a grotto in the bottom of great jungle rivers, where he keeps young women captive. In others Mohon is portrayed as an old man of great strength and stature, and a terrifying grin. He steals fishermen's' bait, nets, and catches. He is portrayed as an extremely hairy being with a very treacherous personality living in the backwaters and terrifying people who live beside rivers and streams they depend on for livelihood and sustenance.

Aos Sí

Aos Sí, or Aes Sídhe, is the supernatural fairy race of Celtic Irish myth. They are descendants of the Tuatha Dé Danann, one of the early supernatural races said to have conquered and inhabited Ireland. They live underground in fairy forts, across the Western sea, or in an invisible world that co-exists with the world of humans; an alternate universe, if you will. The aos sí are often appeased with offerings, and great care is taken not to insult or anger them. Perhaps out of fear of angering the ao sí, they are often referred to "The Good Neighbours", "The Fair Folk", or simply "The Folk". They are usually described as being stunningly beautiful, but some ao sí are hideously, terribly ugly.

Germanic Fairies

Nordic, Anglo Saxon, French, there are many other myths about fairylike creatures, more than can be explored in a single game day. But I think we've covered some unique aspects of cultural myths as well as some of the similarities they share. But, before I close, the mythic tradition that is most central to fairies (and elves) is a European one: Germanic mythology. These human-like sprites are divided into Light and Dark, much like the Scottish Seelie and Unseelie courts.

Liberty Cap mushrooms

A commonly mentioned gateway to Fairyland in British myths is the mushroom fairy ring. And perhaps not coincidentally, a fairly common mushroom in Britain, and throughout Europe is the Liberty Cap, known in modern times to be a hallucinogen. When trees have been cut down, or have fallen, their dead root systems are attractive to fungi. The circular-ish shape of the mushroom ring is dictated by the food -- the underground remnants of the tree's trunk and roots.

Enchanted Forest

Fairyland, Elfhome, Seelie Court, etc., have often been described as deep, mysterious forests. Tales of humans wandering into a dark forest, becoming lost and falling asleep, only to wake up in a glade inhabited by Fairy-like beings are common in many cultures. In these stories, rather than entering Fairyland via some form of portal, Fairyland sweeps over the visitors as they sleep, transforming that part of the forest into Fairyland by enchantment.

It's not a rule per se. Players aren't required to make note of voting to E-1. It's considered a good practice in Newbie games.

The beautiful fairy and Lanval ride off into the sunset.

Fairies began to crop up in literature and tales during the Middle Ages. They were often portrayed as creatures that a knight errant may encounter.
Lanval
is a French poem/song about a knight who was visited by a beautiful lady who sought his love. In the fairy bride tradition, she would shower him with wealth and gifts and be his lover, provided he swore an oath never to tell anyone else about her. Of course he eventually broke that oath. Queen Guinevere fancied Lanval and he spurned her. She defamed him, and he protested and told her that he had a mistress, whose handmaidens were more beautiful than Guinevere. Oops! not only did he break his oath of secrecy to the fairy mistress, but also defaming the queen at the same time. Guinevere set about to ruin him.

This song differs from most other Arthurian legends in the way it portrays women. Rather than women being minor characters with no real virtue other than their beauty, The fairy mistress and Queen Guinevere are both beautiful, AND they play major roles in the story of Lanval's rise and near-downfall. Guinevere is a vain villain in the story and the fairy is a heroine. Though Lanval broke his oath, the fairy rescues him from the intrigue-riddled trial that on the very day of the trial itself.

An early manuscript of Huon of Bordeaus.

Huon of Bordeaux
is a 13th or early 14th century French epic poem about the knight Huon of Bordeaux. He accidentally kills Charlot, the son of King Charlemagne and is sentenced to death. He is then given a reprieve only if he can accomplish several impossible tasks: travel to the court of the Emir of Babylon and return with a handful of the Emir's hair and teeth; slay the Emir's mightiest knight, and kiss the Emir's daughter, Esclarmonde three times. He is aided in these impossible tasks by Oberon, the king of the fairies.

Cicely Mary Barker's Silver Birch Fairy

One hundred years ago this year, fairies were a British obsession. Cicely Mary Barker, a British illustrator, created the Flower Fairies. They were tiny creatures with insect wings and clothes made of flower petals and leaves. Barker's illustrations had a profound influence over how fairies were depicted during much of the 20th century and beyond. Barker, herself was influenced by Victorian attitudes toward fairies. During the 19th century, they lost much of their alluring dangerousness of centuries past, shrank into diminutive sprites, became adorably cute, and were featured in children's literature.

Some of Barker's work is currently on exhibit in the Lady Lever Gallery in Merseyside, UK.

@Fferyllt if we get into a situation where after executing Dann we only have four left, does town win in the event that scum chooses to repeatedly no-kill? When I first played back in 2016 I think the consensus was that it would be a draw but I saw a recent game where Dragoneater was scum where I believe he was debating doing this in scumchat and the mod decision was that it was up to scum to actively kill and choosing to no kill for 3 nights in a row would default to a town victory. What is your take on the matter?

In your hypothetical, would Town be choosing to no-elim during the days? If not, I would let the game play out.

If both factions keep choosing not to eliminate/kill, then I would declare a draw after two full rounds of it.

Trailer of the 2016 movie,
A Midsummer Night's Dream

Shakespeare's play,
A Midsummer Night's Dream
has been remade for the big screen (and the small one) several times since motion pictures became a thing. The timeframe settings have varied everywhere from Elizabethan to right-this-minute. The 2016 version by the BBC is one of the more contemporary-times renditions. The fairies are quite human looking with an overlaid glamour of charisma and magic, which is more in-line with fairies as conceived in earlier centuries, rather than the more modern diminutive, winged portrayals a la Barker.

Book Cover of Faerie Tale by Raymond E. Feist.

Raymond E. Feist, best known for his
Riftwar
saga, wrote a contemporary dark fantasy in 1988. This novel lives where earlier dark fairy stories and myths live.

Spoiler: Hidden for those who might want to read this scary fairy tale. The spoilers are equivalent to what you'd read on the back side of the paperback.
In upstate New York, the king and queen of the fairies, Titania and Oberon, preside over the Dark Hunt. Puck and Oberon struggle against each other for control of Faerie. If the dark side wins, humanity may not survive. A screenwriter and his family are drawn into the conflagration and set out to save the world.

Merlin falls under Nimue's spell in
Camelot
.

The 1960s Musical,
Camelot
was written by Alan Jay Lerner and scored by Frederick Loewe. The movie version of this play left out an important fairy character (and song): "Follow Me", sung by Nimue. Nimue is a beautiful water fairy who draws Merlyn into her cave for an eternal sleep. Merlin begs Nimue for answers: he doesn't remember if he warned Arthur about Lancelot and Mordred. Alas, his memories fade permanently, his warnings heard only in Nimue's cave.

When I saw the roll for this setup, I thought town would have a difficult time of it with only a Jailkeeper PR. Unlike some PRs, the results can be ambiguous.

I realized after Night 2 that TimmerRC was likely to be the game's MVP. He jailkept both mafia and save 2 town lives, including his own.

Day 4 looked a little shaky at times, but Town pulled through. Congrats!

My backup mod, Prism had the same thought when I let him know what the setup would be.

He also was impressed with TimmerRC's night play!

I'm grateful to Prism for agreeing to backup mod, though I fortunately was mostly timely with vote counts, flips, daystarts, etc. Backup mods = peace of mind!

Watching you almost weasel your way out of one of the worst situations I've seen was very entertaining. I love the way you play the game. Super unlucky with the JK targets but you almost got there
I want to echo this. There were quite a few wow moments watching your day 4 play. You seemed incredibly close to making it to day 5, and who knows from there!

Oh!

A huge thanks to Dannflor, Merlyn and Whemestar for replacing in! Having quick replacement volunteers is such a gift to the whole player list. The replacements had an impact, but not nearly the impact of slots being empty for >24 hours.

As well as new players, we had a couple of players who had not been active at MS for 8 or so years. A lot has changed regarding MS games and site culture since then. It was great to see them adapt quickly, and also great to see the rest of the player list help them along on the learning curve!

Aaand...thanks for all the mod kudos. I appreciate it, and I always like to hear about improvements I can make as well as the opportunity to explain why I do things certain ways. There are so many ways to mess up as a mod. Probably most of my idiosyncrasies come down to preventing mistakes happening more than once -- mine, and those I've observed watching other mods.
