I disagree with one of your positions. This game relies heavily on emotional reactions, and impacting your fellow players in an emotionally stimulating way in order to understand their alignment is proper if you know how to do it.

That being said, most players don't.

I think this is more insulting than "you're a dumb fucktard who needs to learn how to play".

The problem is that quite a few players see "emotionally stimulating" others as being an asshole because you can just say "well I was playing the game" as an excuse for being an asshole. I don't care if it gives you a slightly better chance at being able to read another player correctly. If what you are doing is making quite a few players not enjoy the game, you are screwing up and any mod who has respect for the integrity for the game should be force replacing you.

Mafia is not a nice-nice game. Take all the edge out of it, and the game will quickly dissolve into pure setup spec and empty attempts at scumhunting that go nowhere. And we know where that road leads.

Sterilizing mafia is not the solution. The solution is tougher skin and not taking things said in-game personally.

We're talking about 'verbal abuse'; the OP provides a good rule of thumb which is 'if you wouldn't say it to a stranger's face, don't say it to someone in a mafia game'.

I would have no problem verbally abusing a stranger if I felt they deserved it.
