NY175: Sycamore Scuffle

Headquartered on Brussles Street, the Sycamore Chess Club was founded in 1926 and had a rich history of turning beginning players of little knowledge into strategical powerhouses of regional notability. Of course, such an reputable establishment couldn't go forever without some controversy. In March 1985, one of its top and most well-beloved players, Lorenzo McReynolds, was found out to be a high-ranking member of a crime syndicate, and he was expelled with extreme prejudice. This event created a bit of a rift in the club - some felt this was unnecessary and overzealous, while most felt it was the least they could do.

Now, in mid-2014, the disagreement is about to come to a head. It had always been known that some unknown subset of the club's 22 masters were McReynolds supporters, but it was always seen as a polite disagreement that existed only as rumblings. So when a note was found attached to the door of the Masters' Word, the exclusive room where the masters convened, it was a great surprise to all of them:

Surely you know that McReynolds will be released from prison less than a year from now? You may want to consider allowing him back into the club, or there will be some...dire consequences.

A secret ballot conclusively determined that this was not going to happen, and the matter was considered closed. This didn't hold up for long, however - Craig Grady, one of the most anti-McReynolds masters, was found dead in his house by police the next day. Immediately a meeting was convened in the Masters' Word - at the end of the next two weeks, not one more McReynolds supporter would remain with the club.

Posting

• Do not impersonate the mod. Impersonation posts may be edited by the mod to dispel the impersonation.
  
• Do not overuse bold text. If the mod sees a post with too much unnecessary bold in it, they may decide to remove it.
  
• Posts may be edited by the mod to fix broken tags, and double posts of identical content may be deleted. You may request such actions or the mod may do it of their own accord. Edited posts will be noted to have been edited by the mod; do not make posts with a claimed edit notice. The post of a double that is not deleted will also have such a notice, if not in the post that requests it.
  
• If you are part of an anti-town faction, do not out your partners or bargain/threaten to do so. If the mod sees a post that goes "I'm scum with X", "my buddies are Y and Z", "do Q and I'll tell you my peeps", or something similar, you will be modkilled regardless of your actual alignment.

Voting

• You can vote with the vote tags or the bold tags.

• Unvotes before vote switches are not necessary.

• Votes inside spoiler tags (of either type) will not count.
  
• Votes do not have to be at the start of a line or in their own paragraph, but most of the players will hate you if you don't do so.
  
• Once a majority (floor(living players / 2) + 1, rounded up) is voting for one player or for no lynch, the decision is fixed and no further votes or unvotes will take effect.

Phases/Deadlines

• Each Day phase will last [number of living players + 4] days.
  
• If there is no majority by deadline, no lynch will occur, regardless of whether the mod is currently online at the deadline to make said result official.
  
• Each Night phase will last 72 hours (3 days), regardless of whether the mod is currently online at the deadline to make the results official.
  
• Living players may send the mod a PM during the night requesting that the Night end early. If all living players do this, the Night will end as soon as possible.

Activity

• You should try to post once every 24 hours.
  
• If you don't post for 72 hours, you will receive a prod. You then have 24 hours to respond to said prod in-thread (not by PM). Prods sent will be noted in-thread.
  
• You will be force-replaced for inactivity under one of the following conditions:
  • You are about to receive a third prod.
    
  • You do not respond to a prod in 24 hours.
• If the mod decides, at their discretion, that your activity has substantially improved, they may choose to expire one of your prods or allow you more than three prods before replacement.
  
• You may declare V/LA by posting in-thread your expected day of return. Once your stated V/LA time expires and you have not yet posted you will receive a reminder that you are now on the prod clock. Note however that if your stated V/LA is too long (such as two weeks), the mod may choose to replace you.

Replacements

• Players who choose to replace out may PM the mod a message they wish to send to their replacement, which will be relayed at about the same time they receive their role PM (as a result, must be sent in before the replacement is found). This message should be treated as a role PM and therefore may not be quoted, only paraphrased. Force-replaced players may not necessarily be allowed to do this, depending on the nature of the force-replace.
  
• If a replacement occurs during Day with three days or less left in the deadline, the deadline will be suspended while the replacement is happening and reset to three days once it is completed.
  
• Replacements may ask for an extension of up to three days, but only in their first few posts. You can't replace in early in a Day, wait until close to deadline, then ask for a replacement extension. The mod has the right to disallow this extension request.
  
• If a replacement occurs during Night, the Night will continue for 24 hours after the replacement is complete (unless this would make it shorter than usual).

Hydras

• No midgame hydra creation (e.g. "A is replaced by X, hydra of A and B").
  
• I make no concessions for hydras. Any PMs sent (such as action PMs and prods) will be sent to the hydra account only, not any of its individual heads. I'll make an exception for the PM that first informs players of the game, but after that too bad.

Endgame

• Note that these win conditions are generic and should not be used to assume any particular role or faction is in the game.
  
• The Town wins once all anti-town players are dead and at least one pro-town player remains alive.
  
• An anti-town faction wins once it comprises 50% or more of all living players, whether there exist Town roles capable of stopping them via role actions or not.
  
• A Serial Killer wins when all other players are dead, whether they themselves are alive or not.
  
• Should two anti-town factions (or an anti-town faction and a Serial Killer) both comprise 50% of all living players, whichever faction began the game with fewer members wins. If both began with the same amount of members, they draw.

Mod Requests

• If you notice a mistake with a votecount or similar, post so in the thread and the mod will fix it.
  
• If you need a rule clarified, you may post in-thread or PM the mod.

Roles

• Note that the given role-related information is generic and should not be used to assume any particular role is in the game.
  
• Roles are composed of a list of abilities. They can be of the following basic types:
  • 
    (Active)
    abilities are only used when you PM the mod stating what you are using and who to use it on (if applicable). If the mod does not receive a relevant PM, it is assumed you chose to not use the ability. Active abilities can be blocked.
    
  • 
    [Passive]
    abilities are "always on". They have a continuous effect and cannot be blocked by normal roles.
    
  • 
    <Reflexive>
    abilities automatically use themselves under a given condition. They may or may not be blockable and may or may not inform the user that they have been used.
• Abilities can have the following basic modifiers attached:

    {Factional}
    abilities belong to a group and are executed by a chosen member. In general, a player may use a factional ability and a personal ability in the same night, but not two factional ones or two personal ones.

    (X-Shot)
    abilities can only be used a given number of times. If an attempt to use such an ability is blocked, no shot is used up.
    
  • 
    <Compulsive>

It's gonna bug me a litte, but the spirit of the rule is so people don't post large blocks of bold that don't need to be, so I can't argue against it.

@Mod: When the mafia submits actions and a player is replacing, does mafia get to make actions in place of said player?

The rules provide for a minimum of 24 hours for replacing-in players to take action. That said, should any factional member be absent during night for some other reason, they will lose out on their personal abilities, but may be directed to carry out factional ones. So for example if a mafia is made of A, B, and C, and C is absent, A and B can direct C to do the kill but not to do any personal actions C may have.

Where is it against the rules? I have never seen that rule and personally don't think it should be against the rules. But, show me where and I will be glad to drop it. I have seen people scum hunt all the time by seeing who is online or in scum chat or last visited so I don't see how this is any different.

Read the activity rules for this game. Attempting to circumvent them via illegitimate V/LA is a clear violation. Furthermore, Site Rules prohibit bringing outside influences, of which this is most

Do you normally just skip over the parts of mod posts that aren't votecounts? I have addressed this three times already.

@Wake88: Time spent during night does not count towards being prodded, as should be expected from any other game here.

Players will not be prodded until the day has been open long enough to reach the ruleset's prod length.

Toomai, does this mean a Scum Odd-Night Commuter could use his ability AND use his factional ability to kill someone? 'Cause it's looking like your rules say the member of Scum could do a factional kill and a personal ability at the same time.

By default, yes, a groupscum member may carry out the factional kill and use their personal ability on the same night. However, it is possible that (for example) their personal ability has a clause such as "You cannot carry out the factional kill on the same night you use this ability."
