Normal Game List (Moderators) - OLD

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Mon Jul 21, 2003 1:59 am

Waiting List Rules

Normal Games

This is your standard Mafia game: any game with more than 12 players (usually 20-30) played with the standard rules, basic roles, and no theme.

Played in:
New York forum.

Number of games at a time:
5 (Subject to change, based on number of members).
Dependent on demand.

Signing up to play:
When a Moderator is ready to start a game, he or she will post a sign-up thread in the Queue forum. Do not post in the Normal Game Moderator List to join games. If there is not an open sign-up thread, then there are already the maximum number of games, and someone will start a new sign-up when one of them finishes.

Moderating:
If you want to moderate a normal game, simply post so in the thread Normal Game Moderator List. Note that it is suggested you moderate a mini game first, though this is not required.

What is normal?
(subject to small changes)

It is natural for games to progress from the simple to the complicated. Players like to try new roles, mechanics, and so on. Theme games developed to add a bit of flavor to the standard game.

That said, the purpose of Sicily is to ensure that there are always a few basic games going. Theme games can be very fun to play, but often get away from the point of the game to some degree; the outcome is sometimes decided more by the players figuring out the setup and dealing with special mechanics than by suspicion. They can also be confusing, especially to newer players and to those unfamiliar with the theme.

For a long time, moderators have been pushing the definition of "normal" to the point where Sicily has lost most of its purpose. When I originally set the forums up, I thought it was common sense that even themes which are solely for the purpose of flavor are still themes, and that games with unusual mechanics were not "normal". Apparently that's not the case. So, here are some "official" guidelines governing what a normal game is. This applies to both Sicily and normal Mini games.
  1. The setting of a normal game should be Mafia related (or, on occasion, Werewolf related). Even flavor text should not be based on any book, movie, song, time period, etc.
  2. A normal game should have at least one Mafia family, and no more than two.
  3. A normal game does not have to have any other roles other than Mafia and Townies. If it includes other roles, they should mostly be considered standard: Cop, Doc, Vig, Roleblocker, Mason, Traitor, Serial Killer.
  4. Other (new or otherwise) roles can be included. However, there should be no more than 1-2 of these, and they should be based around the usual game mechanics: Killing, Protecting, Investigating, Voting.
  5. In general, normal games should include plain Townies. Don't overuse roles just to make your game more interesting (it probably won't make it more interesting anyway, just unbalanced).
  6. Certain setups which satisfy all of the above might still be better suited as theme games. Examples include Texas Justice, NYPD, and Hospital, in which all the innocent roles were the same. The setups of these games fit the guidelines outlined above, but their nature makes them more suited to be run as theme games.
  7. Moderators should have their game set up prior to signing up to the waiting list.
Inactive players on the mod list

If anyone on the list, currently active on the forums or not, fails to answer their prodding PM within a week, they'll be removed from the list permanently. Exceptions will be made for those who posted in the Limited Access thread. You don't have to start sign-ups right away when you're prodded, there could be a period when you don't have enough time for modding a game. You can always be put in limbo in this case. All you have to do is let the list mod know what your plans are when your turn's up. Should you fail, tough luck.

Does this list carry over from the previous board? If so, then I was next up for a full-sized Normal game when it crashed.

Either way, I have a game ready to roll whenever...

Thanks, Macros, although you didn't have to do that. I wasn't trying to be pushy or whatever when I asked that, of course... was just wondering.

So, should I start sign-ups now? Or do the games carrying over and/or restarting fall into this category (and therefore should finish before this list activates at all)?

Well, I PM'd mith to see whether I should start sign-ups yet or not, and haven't received an answer yet. Therefore, unless I hear differently within a couple of days, I'm tempted to begin sign-ups just to get the ball rolling. I don't want to step on any toes or anything, but we've eventually got to get things rolling here.

I have begun a sign-up thread for Normal 14: "Rumours" in this Forum.

mith:
If this is a problem, please let me know and I'll be happy to lock that thread until such time as I'm allowed to begin the game, or whatever other solution is deemed appropriate. Again, I don't want to violate our rules regarding how many games should run at once, but it seems that the pre-crash games are having a tough time being restarted right now, and it seems like a full-sized game could be run without disrupting things too badly. I hope this is OK...

Alright, I've already PMed Dourgrim, but just to make it official (and to say some other things):

Currently Intrigue and In/Dependent Mafia are both on the "moving" list to be resumed here. Those two, along with Dourgrim's game, will be the three from the Normal List. However, as the resuming process may take a bit of time, and I still consider Intrigue more of a Theme game anyway (;)), if you decide to, Macros, you can let another one start as well (whether yours or not).

The waiting list is restarted, so sign-up here. If you whine enough about how it was almost your turn to run a game before the crash, maybe Macros will bump you up a bit, but I leave that to him, so no promises. ;)

I donlt know about the rest, but I'm not signing up anymore to games with over 20 players. They simply take too long.

Contrary to DP, I love big games. The bigger they are, the more strategy usually involved, and the more thinking usually needed.
This is just here so my posts don't look so ugly when I edit them.

I have to admit, I'm with DP on this one. I've decided never to run a game with more than 20 people in it. My few experiences playing in them have involved far too many player replacements and a constant feeling of "Ok...where were we again?"

That said, I seriously considered signing up for this one because I trust Dourgrim to be an accurate and attentive mod, and that goes a long way toward making me happy in a game. But I'm currently stretched to my personal limit in playing/modding games (four max), so I regretfully passed.

MeMe agreed with DP, and then wrote:That said, I seriously considered signing up for this one because I trust Dourgrim to be an accurate and attentive mod, and that goes a long way toward making me happy in a game. I understand DP's point, and that certainly answers why DP hasn't signed up... but it doesn't really address where everyone else is. Perhaps we just have too many games running at once, and everyone else is stretched as thinly as MeMe seems to me... in which case perhaps we shouldn't be starting more games at this point. Just some food for thought...

(And thank you for the kind words, MeMe dear... they are certainly appreciated.)

I'd like to mod a classic 'no cop' mafia game - 17 players.

what others opinons on running sign ups for another normal game, i think with antraxs game starting, in/dependant mafia nearly ready to re-run, and 1 and 14 still on very high players it can wiat quite a while.
i have it ready to go if needs be, but i dont particularly think we need it at the minute

I think it'll be a while, due to all the existing normals being in the early stages of the game.
