That is to say my vote was at least semi-serious.
I don't disagree, but I think given contextual clues that the vote on LLD was unwarranted.

In the spirit of that one Mastina post about helping advance dialogue by stating WHY you disagree with ABC instead of countering with DEF, Shea:

LLD's statement is something she has made as both alignments in her recent 2020-2021 games, and she suffered heavily as town in Xenoblade II from being unable to keep up with the slog that was caused. (And in the case of that game, the slog was me, I was the bad one on a shitton of painkiller opioids after surgery...)

I see LLD using her "gravitas" as far as her reputation for MURDERTUNNELZZZZZZZZ to threaten people to keep on track perfectly fine. Did she need to say it? Probably not. Do I scum read her explicitly for saying it, no. Would I scum read some random person with a join date of yesterday for stating it? Possibly.

P-edit: Sure Shea. Cabd is Neuter, ffery is spay.

I have a pretty questionable innate action
, and even more questionably use SP skill.

My innate skill is I can check people's current HP. I checked Save The Dragons last night (random.org). They have 3 HP. Comparatively, I have 5 HP.

My other ability, which costs 2 SP is to check a target and see if they are using SP as well the same night. I didn't use it last night.

My "class," is called Sovereign. I'm royalty or something.
This is town.

Folks who were in FGO, this is the "Master upgrade clause" thing all over again.

you have an investigation and can check if players are lying. call out liars.

or you could just claim all invests immediately and make sure your role has zero utility, while outing the HP of other random players and making them easier to kill? i suppose.
from what i gathered theres no reason people would lie about SP abilities so don't think that will be really useful "invest"
unless im misunderstanding role.
i mean if i was scum who used an SP action to debuff a towny i would like to keep that a secret, personally.
So, hypothetically speaking, as town you would have announced that you debuffed us?

In post 166, Thestatusquo wrote:What is the town motivation for just claiming like that?
Shea, I know you were not in it, but something INCREDIBLY similar to this was used to clear LLD in FGO mafia (I was the mod) where all of town had a thing, but didn't know that the others had the thing, and somebody stepped forward confident that THE THING gave them ultimate cosmic duty to get an upgrade/shiny.

That is how I read Toog's play.

"I have this shiny thing and it seems unique and suspicious enough to me that I feel the need to claim about it, lest somebody investigate me and it comes out as a wasted fake guilty gotcha"

So I'm town reading it more than just a miller claim.

Not at all.

I don't intend to encourage anyone else to go down this path.

It was a one time use thing, and it appears Toog used it.

I agree that unwnd likely designed roles that punish massclaim.

That doesn't seem like what they said, though? They didn't say anything about getting investigated.
It's amazing what the power of thinking about another player's mindset and projecting a "town toog model" can do, isn't it?

Spoiler: mastina claim
In post 351, morph the cat wrote:Unless you're claiming town-siding third party, it's 7.
Oh what the hell I'm probably not any worse off for claiming it since I bet the playerlist would be able to tell I'm not town and would wagon me for that anyway where I'm damned if I do damned if I don't, wagoned for not being town if I don't claim, wagoned for not being town if I do. (Meaning there's a high chance I don't win here even tho I am in fact fully benign.)

I am the third party.

I'm an Arcanist.

My non-SP ability is Charm Eye. I target a player and they are Charmed. (No clue what Charmed means, my role PM doesn't specify.) Charming counts as a form of marking. (And is the only form of marking I have.)

My 1-SP ability is Chain Circle. I bind the target, negating all support done to them--useful for the town if I target scum, but harmful to the town if I target town, because it's by my understanding basically negating buffs to the target. Preventing scum buffs pro-town, preventing town buffs anti-town.

My 2-SP ability is Nerve Circle. I ensnare my target in a circle--anyone targeting that player takes 2 HP in damage. This basically turns my target into a form of PGO. Incredibly pro-town if I target a player scum target as it damages scum. Incredibly anti-town if I target a player town target.

My 3-SP ability is Curse Circle. I curse my target to be unable to be healed by utility abilities. Again, incredibly pro-town if I target scum to stop them from healing, but incredibly anti-town if I target town to stop them from healing.

My fourth ability, Dispel, 2-SP, is dispelling the curse circle. Doing so heals me for 2 HP.

My passive, Enlightenment, makes me gain 1 SP every time I successfully mark someone.

I win when I mark 5 players. (Which means had I gotten a N0 action in I could've won on D5 but now it's pushed back to D6 at the earliest.) A target doesn't need to be alive to count. So basically if nothing causes my marks to fail I automatically would win on D6 if I got five marks off.

But, *shrug*, "mastina just admitted to not being town", "mastina isn't town", "mastina could be lying", "mastina might end the game in a solo win", "mastina could be scum fakeclaiming 3p", etc. Pick your choice in ways where I'm guaranteed to die before I win, likely by the town elimination.

Since I've taken the "oh what the hell" approach of claiming, may as well go on to scumhunting now.
VOTE: morph the cat

Call it gut if you must but the insistence on hunting 3p as scum pinged me as probably being scum. As the third party in question who knew that I wasn't malevolent, the odd obsession with insisting the game had seven scum and hunting for seven scum stuck out as being a scum mindset.
lucky(?) for you, THIS head has a soft spot 3rd parties that say they can townside. I don't think you have quite the bizarro meta-memory that I have, but you may recall that from the days of yore.

We're looking for the Oil Tycoons role PM in the DBZ game, but something 3rd Party JOATish sounds familiar.

Toog townslipped in our collective opinion, the same way it went down with you in the master uprgade clause thing in FGO.

Well, with the exception of about three posts, it's been all me so far.

So treat it as a cabd slot from today's posting, no need to fall back onto the hydra unreadable clause.
Ok but that's not going to be true long term.
This seems like a really disingenuous argument honestly.
I was taking your prior post about seeing cabdscum to be a statement that you were scumreading me based upon today's posting. I was telling you that you didn't need to add a subnote that "maybe ffery though" if that was the case, as her contributions up to that post was minimal.

I waffle about the space where Bell's scum game lives, worrying that it has expanded.

This play is well beyond my thoughts about where and how his scum game expands.

We'd definitely metadive any mod as either alignment.

For me, the difference is in what hits the thread vs what stays locked in scumchat. Cabd plays scum on a very different level than I do, though.

We also have fairly different immediate reactions to 3p claims, shaped by very different offsite experiences with/as indies.

You can do better than call us scum for extremely NAI behaviors.

Anyways. I have a pretty questionable innate action, and even more questionably use SP skill.

You know, I kind of want to dig into this.

This is something I faced a lot in team mafia where I would do townie things that are in my town meta and people would be like "well this is NAI for Shea." and honestly its kind of frustrating. I know I'm good at scum and I know I'm good at replicating my town game, but at some point you can look at the motivation for my points and make a judgement call about them. Just saying "this is NAI" is lazy and doesn't really seem like much of an attempt at solving. I am solveable, everyone is.

Not to be all LAMIST but solve me, don't be apathetic about it. Look into the why of my posts.
Ohh are we going to 1v1 this early? I am not gonna be apathetic to u. I think im actually pretty good at reading u. i read u correctly in 2 team mafias tho i think i told norwee u were town in last one so i guess wrong on that.

Anyways im not gonna shout down all reads on u but im def gonna challenge anything i don't think doesn't mean what a person thinks it means.
So we can fite it out all u want but im not being apathetic about u buddy.

you have an investigation and can check if players are lying. call out liars.

or you could just claim all invests immediately and make sure your role has zero utility, while outing the HP of other random players and making them easier to kill? i suppose.
from what i gathered theres no reason people would lie about SP abilities so don't think that will be really useful "invest"
unless im misunderstanding role.
In post 178, White Fire wrote:

I disagree because, to be honest, you are a possible elimination target if you are town. I think you tend to flail a little bit when you get close to lim. So I worry about a wagon being formed on you without good justification.
Either way, I get to come back when I'm a little more sane and look at the wagon and its formation, see who did what when and where. Then you get more AI stuff from me and how I approach it. Win Win. :D
u make it sound like u want a wagon on u. Which I press X to doubt.
Doesn't matter who it's on, I just want a wagon to form for me to dissect.

It's still quite surprising to me. I expected divergence on some of them.

I guess next up would be Bell, his back and forth with Shea in the past few pages read as extremely town bell to both of us.

I mean, there's no point in doing it now. Besides, Toogeloo is probably town.
I actually kind of worry about it being the kind of thing Third Party might do in order to gain town cred for having a vaguely confirmable action without being threatening enough to draw a NK. It's the kind of play I would consider if I were a TP and had a vaguely confirmable role. Also, knowing HP in general seems like a role that would be more useful for scum than town.

All of that is a little tin foil hat though.
This comes from a player who I know immediately claims vt as vt in the mason vs scum stump setups, if that adds context

Titus' got her team she wants, Nancy's got their team of Masons they want, other peeps got some juicy powerz probably, and then me... stuck in the middle twiddlin' my thumbs.

Wait... Why's this feel so familiar? Pooky, I'm having déjà vu!?!
To be clear, this wasn't a good idea in that game, or in the game before where they did this, but at least they're consistent. Though I think it loops back around into being "not towny" (the role is though)

That is only happening due to the cabd head, by the by. This wouldn't be happening if the slot was a ffery slot, I don't believe.

That is the average but there are exceptions to that rule. The Tenet scum discord, for instance, was the equivalent of about 70 thread pages. We all used both realtime and our PT to keep track of everything. And did plenty of active coaching. (In the case of Tenet, to get Gypyx outside of what we knew Nacho was looking for in his scum range)

That scumteam had LLD on it, incidentally.

Running out of scum ratholes to hide from the POE, and several players have yet to show up.

Yeah you'd have to hate your own money to host a massive scummer meet at a home you own as opposed to a third party venue with insurance.

Just too many moving parts. Even with a smaller group.

Not really what I meant, although I see that point. I’m more looking at the player list and wondering why, given said list you’re more worried that there aren’t movers and shakers on the scum team than that there are and you aren’t seeing them.
I have fairly solid townreads on a majority of the movers and shakers I personally would panic about, and I just came off a game where being paranoid about handing out townreads and instead sitting by burned me and my town team.

How bad was the burn?
Extreme, actually.

It was soulcrushingly miserable. Mod randomly did a "tehehehehe by the way the town miller exists but there are no town cops oh yeah and there's a neighborhood but both memebrs are mafia traitors that don't know about each other" shit and we tried to mechsolve instead of reads-solve. It was a disaster.

We've played as morph so often that our hydra has its own meta, somewhat separate from our solo play. Our styles merge. a LOT. I feel like our voices are still recognizable, but external feedback suggests otherwise sometines.

Aside from an abandoned game from earlier this year, most of our scum-meta is from 2013-2014, I think. We did intentionally have dissonance in at least one of those games. And in the abandoned game, we had some unintentional dissonance at one point, but I'd say neither of us was putting in a great performance that game.

I have done this before in every hydra I've drawn scum in. Morph is no exception. I recall explicitly doing so in the fire emblem mini theme Vi ran many moons ago. Against Mara/Borkie in our neighborhood QT.

Spoiler: Nuanced Answer
In most of my hydrae, it's two separate players with two separate styles posting under a combined flag. Morph is a little different. In morph, both of us essentially abandon our existing play styles and get into a convergence of our two styles, such that we could literally post each other's thoughts in morph's style, and few would notice. If you go back earlier, there was a part where both heads of the hydra replied to the same post back to back and said nearly the same substance. That's not by design, it's just the morph-sync we get into. As far as our vote goes, we discuss everything internally in a PT or discord chat, and even though it's not in the thread we have a reads list from the get go. Even before the game starts, heck, even before we have our role PM or alignment, we're already doing homework on the player list. For whatever reason, our styles are super compatible, and it brings out the tryhard in both of us.

I think the key to this game is gonna be preventing scum from pivoting from the "eliminate the easy marks" stage to the "expand the scum pool with paranoia and setup spec" second stage.

I also think we can be more choosy about which LHF we elim as to not let phase one play out completely.

I agree with you.

I think my current play of allowing Wheme and Arte wagons to compete and see where people land (one one of them, or on netiher) will give me a good sense of what people are trying to do.

Where do you want me to look?
What do you make of NDmath and STD? Those are the other two with low post counts that I could see a flashwagon popping up on.

I try to forget that game. Can you link me?
It was in the scum discord channel.

I can paraphrase though:

Phase one: elim the low hanging fruit that wasn't mafia
Phase two: Pivot to expanding the scumpool via paranoia and setup spec and hope town ignores the low hanging fruit that is Mafia
Phase three: use the near majority to win off of one or two players with abysmal reads

In tenet, the pivot from phase one to two was us expanding the scum pool away from A50/Gypyx/Spiffeh/Pooks and towards Bell/Skitter/Notsci et al.

Well yeah. Both of you know (or at least I think you do) that there's a significant chance I get bored and double check later. Lying here is stupid, so you won't do it. So why not ask you directly instead of waiting to have the time to do the legwork?
Just seemed off compared to asking the two players not in our slot that are experts in morphology.

I don't hate it, just trying to get to the meat of why.

This is my first game with Flea, but I've spectated a few of faer games. Watching a game vs being active is never an identical experience so some of the shine I feel for Flea here could be an artifact of being immersed in this game instead of a desultory spectator in the grandstand. I feel a lot more in sync with faer's game thoughts than I anticipated.

1) The difference between the whemestar and aremiana slots in your mind. Why is one a priority sort while the other is icky? What is causing that difference in read tiers?

-If it were entirely Cabd's call Mara would be down in red but I (cabd still) just came out of a game where I mistakenly scumread her and her replacement pooky suffered a tunnel from me that was unwarranted. Both heads of this hydra saw Mara's scumgame up close and personal in perpetual mylim just a few weeks ago, as well.

Whemestar has gone from me being whelmed, to me being underwhelmed, with a set of hedges suitable to fully fence in my corner lot here in the north suburbs.

2) The bell locktown read

Completely meta and unlikely to be super compelling to you. But his back and forth with you was incredibly vintage bell ubertown. This and the Toog read are both completely 100% no disagreement sheeped by each other.

3) The bingle scum read

We intend to get into this in another post, but it's something that started last night in our hydra chat around 10:30 PM (Chicago time) to the point where I told ffery that we were getting into "Bitch Eating Crackers" mode and needed to step away from it. When we came back to it around 4PM (same Chicago time) we didn't feel much differently.

We don't think he'd really expect any pushback from scum reading us early. I don't think that I care much about his "big soft" as it's NAI anyways. I've softed my real role as scum in early day ones plenty of times.

We find that as we track the opinions of other slots, Bingle is the most polarizing, which is an interesting thing. We'll get into THAT more in detail as well.

Close, but no cigar
Think on it more, you are close
But there’s something gone.
Close, but not quite there yet. Think we need a bigger flashlight.

Alternatively, you can spell it out in Cobra Kai fashion~

What is your make and manufacturer? Generally speaking replacing the keyboard can be part ordered online, and then YouTube video to step by step it. You'll want anti-static straps, as well as a precision screwdriver set, and a shim to avoid damaging the exterior case or interior pieces. Depending on your manufacturer, you may need a new ribbon cable (connects the keyboard to the motherboard) or it may come with the replacement part.

It's the trend of large themes over the past few years to have scumteams that don't actually post that much, such that the game ca often be won by just eliminating from the bottom of the activity post count sort list until the game's over.

I would like more insight into this
faers entire ISO up to faers multi-spoilers were pretty much exactly the kinds of posts that I haven't liked when reading along as a spectator in other games. I was expecting to have faer below the line of elimmability when I finally did a full sort of the player list.

Stuff fae posted in that catchup that I liked (like doesn't mean agree, necessarily, but it does mean I can follow why fae has that stance/opinion and can see it coming from town):

- the Bell trajectory in
- the pushback about MC's statement re "people" giving scum-LLD a pass in
- also the TSQ turn of phrase fangirling in that post. not directly AI, but feels really light, easy and unfettered.
- faers reaction to LLD's thoughts about Dunn pushing faer in and then confirming the "rubber chicken" characterization (in faers own words) shortly after in a reply to Guill
- expression of "the heebies" to Guill's "when I flip town" interaction with Dunn. This is a reaction I disagree with, but I *get* that it can come from town-I-disagree-with

I just had one of the least pleasant experiences I have ever had playing mafia in my entire life.

In which I was invited into a dance game as the 9th player, and in the course of essentially 5 minutes of a deadline, the game had already been over and I was without a partner because players had essentially already decided what they wanted to do.

I don't know why I was invited to that game just to be ostracized, but I was especially bothered by how I was told that it wasn't a big deal.

It hurt me a lot. And Bingle was a player who had a pre-planned partner going into the game. He contributed to the worst feeling I've ever had playing Mafia on this site, I think, and I'm kind of really just angry.
We're good with our vote based on our own read/interactions with Bingle (damn cracker crumbs everywhere).

If we were voting with you only because of the strength of your read/strength of our townread on you, we'd be reconsidering.

And I'm really sorry you wound up in an awful game situation. <3

I'm aware. FWIW, I'm not at all proud of my play that game and that was literally the most emotionally distressing game I've ever played on site, for reasons that were largely not the fault of anyone directly involved in that game. Suffice to say I was going through a really hard time with family stuff and probably shouldn't have been playing mafia at all, but the mod was too tempting to resist.
That's not what I meant at all!

Updated. We should probably put STD back down to sort, but coming off of games of misreading him, it's tough to not want to give him BOTD.

Bingle you should quote stripe our reads list and tell us why we're bad point by point. It'll be fun.

Get off your butt and go round up some townreads if scum hunting isn't your forte right now.

As tvtropes puts it:
"First, think of a problem that the player has to get around — like, say, helping a cat down from a tree. Then, think of how a normal, sensible person would solve the issue with the objects that would be close to hand. Then seal your head inside of a half-full vat of boiling chlorine for about twenty minutes, and write down another way you'd solve the problem that at that moment makes perfect sense to your probably fatally poisoned mind. Repeat this process until you have discovered the most circuitous possible solution."

I understand but don't subscribe to the Chara/MC/LLD/Shea townreads. I might be biased, but I feel like MC has been a little too concerned with how he looks to other people. That's a big grain of salt, because I scumread town him in TM for literally that same reason. I think that LLD and Shea are probably town, but it's not strong yet. With that said, despite a small sample size I've actually been fairly successful at reading LLD as a spectator, so I'm not particularly worried about her. Shea... snows me. I don't think I ever don't tr shea before endgame, and even in TM I arrived at scum shea because I was hypertunneled on a townie who couldn't be scum with anyone else. In my defense, Pine did outright lie about my reads on a few occasions tactically in that game so I didn't have the agency to press, but I'm not at all confident in my ability to locktown him. I'd like to see more from Chara before I commit to a solid read on it, but so far I've liked what I've seen.

Regardless, I'm fine with leaving that group off the table for now.

Notty I just talked about, and would probably put in your orange bin or perhaps just below.

Titus is tough. Like, once upon a time I could reliably read Titus, but we haven't played together frequently in years. There are posts she makes that make me want to say "This is townTitus." but they're less frequent than they need to be for any degree of certainty. One of my priorities is going to be to try and get her engaged in the game and in an active back and forth about reads, preferably with someone like you or LLD. I remember Titus being really good at performing for an audience or pocketing someone in a back and forth, but not both simultaneously.

Flea I should probably look at again as I don't recall any strong pings. I do remember fae was scum in Among Us and I think faer scumgame was pretty strong early but fell apart after time, so that's not a priority sort for me.

Your yellow crew is probably all null to me atm and none of them would be off the lim table if I was given a compelling reason.

Farkran would probably be on the same level as Titus but with the same disclaimer as TSQ, and with the note that I have FAR less experience there.

Anya is a read I'm strategically withholding atm. The rest of the players I haven't even really attempted to sort.
Different game experiences and quite possibly different skillsets.

I'm not sure about Cabd, but I think this is my first time playing with TSQ. There was a point earlier in the game where I almost got snippy with him about barging through my lines of questioning a couple times, but I know that my approach to digging for data annoys some players. It feels like he's playing from the sidelines, though.

Chara may be too high in our reads given the amount of time we've spent thinking about its play.

Cabd is (and will be) a sort of buffer between me and Titus. Our playstyles clash pretty hard.

There are actually a number of players in this list that I have little or no experience playing with and I'm comparing their play to generic models for now and waiting to see what develops. e.g. big error bars.
