Balto: The true story of an American hero

Taking place from May 28th to June 5th

Image

Here is a list of things we will be doing:

  • 1) Baltimore Aquarium
    2) Gay bar
    3) Mafia f2f
    4) Board games
    5) DC trip maybe
    6) Drinking "games" if you are "21 or older"
    7) TheTrollie will perform really good magic tricks
    8) Pole dancing lessons by Grimm
    9) Other stuff

Transportation

  • 1) Amtrak: Amtrak will take you to Baltimore Penn Station, which is about 10 mins car ride from our apartment. The code for the Amtrak stop is BAL. We can pick you up or it's a $7 taxi to our apartment.

    2) Plane: BWI Airport is about 25 minutes from our apartment, and we can pick you up.

    3) Car: You can PM me for an address to my apartment. There is free parking about 3 blocks from our apartment so it should be no big deal to drive.

In post 6, gorckat wrote:Baltimore meet will be cool.

May 17-19 should have lacrosse (May 18- men's quarterfinals at UMD for people able to make the trip), and all dates might have O's baseball for sports minded folks.

No room in my basement, but I'll help scout locations and such.

Thanks :)

May 17-19 would also be best for me since it's the day after finals end so I will be free and ready to get wasted.

K methinks it'll be May 24-26 anyway because now that I think about it I will NOT want to be setting up for this as I approach finals and I will probs want a week off.

The Baltimore Museum of Industry is, imho, vastly underrated and a lots of fun for getting into the origins of modern technology.

Also, I can show you where all the cotton candy fluff landed, and probably still is, from my daughter's b-day ~7 years ago

A solid day could be had hitting the Aquarium, lunch in Fells Point or Fed Hill, the BMI, maybe even AVAM (American Visionary Arts Museum) and then an indie film up at the Charles Theatre.

I like this guy. We'll keep him.

Damn, I have to get out of the Hopkins Bubble

Why would someone make a TV show about Hopkins? o.O

Because it's known as the most cutthroat college, and I heard that the wire just fed that stereotype

We live like 5 blocks from ghettoland, and Hopkins security drives around the area 24/7 so it's p safe. I walk around by myself a lot but you're especially safe if there's more than one of you outside at night

And dw, the last time I was into sports enough to drag people to a game was never ;)

Trollie and I will discuss how it would work. We can always have people get 2 rooms for 8 people at motel 6 and then have people cycle every 2 days to the hotel rooms to water down individual costs. That would cost $40 per person (20 per day) and would open up another 8 sleeping situations, allowing 23 spots (not including Trollie and I).

We also have carpet space. If needed we can search around for more mattresses to borrow from people.

We'll make it work

We ask if people are 100% coming to say so, even if they've already /inned, so that we can start preparing now

That is so skeezy!

As a property manager, the first thing I think of when I hear of a mattress swap is...bed bugs.

I doubt our friends have bed bug problems, nor do I believe there is such a thing as air mattress bed bugs :P

Trollie and I will discuss how many people can be staying in our house at a given night and set each night's limit to that number. It will probably be 20, and I really doubt we will have more than maybe one or two nights with that many people given the current conditionals of people inning to the meet. We'll set up a google doc, and first 20 to sign for each day are given priority for sleeping space, with anyone else having to get hotel/motel space. I would be willing to chaperone people to hotels even at night since I don't really drink so that won't be a problem, and if I do drink there are taxis everywhere so nbd

I think it'll work out fine. But yes, we should get a google doc up ASAP and secure air mattresses now

Ok

As I said we'll have a signup for days within the next week

It won't be a "you only can sign up for X days" thing, it will be the first 20 people that are /in to this get dibs for days and then it's first come first serve. I'm sure there will be less popular days based off of current interest so I really think we won't get over 20 any specific day except for MAYBE the weekend

Here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... sp=sharing

If you're a maybe for space reservation PLEASE state so. It's ok that you call space when you're not 100% positive, but I will be expecting a definite answer for space reservation by March 20th so that people can plan accordingly if spaces open up

That means you can tentatively reserve sleeping room until March 20th and if you back out of space after then I'll be kind of peeved that you held a space from someone else that could have had it and bought tickets / travel costs for cheaper if they had known a space would be open then.

At this point I'm not worried about housing. If there is any issue it would just be on day, and we can transport people to a motel6 for maybe 20 dollars for that night. I really don't think it will be an issue.

Please keep in mind that for days we are cooking it will run around maybe 10 bucks a day for food. We can eat out too obviously, but just expect a full day to be about 10 bucks and we will have things like peanut butter, jelly, bread, etc etc available all the time and then make something for dinner every night. We don't cook meat (other than fish), and I'd prefer if in the apartments meat wasn't cooked (aka I really would prefer if burgers weren't a thing) just because I can't really handle the smell but of course you can get fast food and stuff, which is within walking distance, if you want that. There's also grubhub and stuff.

I'll tell you guys what I told UN:

  • no beaches anywhere within like an hour drive so that's prob not gonna happen. We also dont have a pool
The rooms are large, we have 2 apartments. In total we have 2 large living rooms, 2 kitchens, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. There is also a basement that's gigantic with a pretty shitty gym. We have plenty of outlets, we also have two laundry/storage rooms (1 in each of our apartments) where you can do laundry if you wanna and keep your stuff. We also have two storage cages in the basement if people wanna keep stuff down there. Oliver's apartment is pretty much set up to be a light show (multiple LED lights, a fog machine, a strobe light, a bubble machine, black lights, etc) and a large speaker system and we use spotify through it so dw about bringing music, you can just add to the playlist. We can't always be loud but we can have parties some nights, prob on weekends mostly since a lot of families live in the building.

I'll probably cook a lot b/c I like to but we'll prob chip in. I'd expect to be spending on AVERAGE 5 to 10 bucks a day on food depending on what we're doing. We can also eat at the inner harbor / go to the aquarium, etc. For transport we have a car for days when less people are here but there is a lot of free public transport throughout bmore as well. We may go to DC one night to go to a club. Or maybe one in Bmore idk yet.

There are lots of parks around, a cool wooded area we can go through one night, we have campus to do shit in obviously. Plenty of stuff to do

This meet starts on Tuesday which is a little awkward (why not go weekend to weekend?) so Im thinking about maybe making this a 3 leg trip and flying to Los Angeles first to visit some people and then going LAX-BWI. If I did that, I'd probably end up getting in on a 4:10PM arrival flight on Wednesday, 29th. Would that be doable? Could someone pick me up at that time? Im not sure that the schedule looks like on the Balto end, trying to work this out. Let me know! Thanks.

We can pick you up any time preferably between 1PM and 8PM, with a standard deviation of "chance we will be disappointed to pick you up" outside of that range of plus or minus 2 hours, obviously it being an empirical mound.

Due to the current lower level of interest in week days, I'm making a change that I think will be a wise one

The first two days of the meet, May 28th and 29th I am capping it at 15 people (as opposed to 20). The last two days, being the 4th and 5th, I'm capping it at 17.

It will be a VERY hectic weekend since I assume we'll be full and then us = 22 people in two apartments. It'll obv be fun as fuck, but for the sake of my sanity I'd prefer a little bit of a weaning into that number at the beginning and a weaning out at the end.

This still leaves at least 3 available spots for all of those days. Attached is the document. Please reserve space if you want it before you lose it. If you're not on the list and someone doesn't drop please don't rely on sleeping space in the apartment, even if it's floor space.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... maVE#gid=0

Also, if someone wants to coordinate a weeklong game of mafia I'm in. I would not be willing to host.

Oh in case it's not clear the meet is going until the 5th, not through to the 6th. Oliver has to leave on the 5th and I'm ok with staying of course through the rest of the day while people wait for flights/boats out of Bmore but I'd like it if there was noone staying over that night. I gotta be in Chicago on the 8th so I'd like a little bit of leeway in case something goes terribly wrong

I gotta be in Chicago on the 8th so I'd like a little bit of leeway in case something goes terribly wrong
Does this mean that the "6/5/2013" column on the google doc is superfluous?
Oh yes technically for "sleeping arrangements" it is unnecessary

I am immediately changing said column to "cock"

Updated. I deleted Reck and Grimm from days they're not gonna be there

There is now a waitlist for some days. It would be very nice if people could decide ASAP if they're coming if they're not certain so that people can plan based off of that. I'd hate for someone on the waitlist to not come and then there ends up being a spot.

WE ARE CONSIDERING GOING TO SEE A SHOW AT CENTERSTAGE THEATER

IT WOULD BE CLYBORNE PARK

The show would be free for all involved, we have a shitton of free tickets. We don't know the date yet, or how many seats they can specifically hold for us on a given day.
Please PM me if you're interested and we'll try to figure out the best day.

I want this very clear and stated:

There is an ABSOLUTELY no drama policy at this meet.

I don't care what forum-related qualms people have had, we are all people that are coming to a crammed apartment to live together for a week and we would only do this if we expected it to be a worthwhile and enjoyable experience.

I'm not having this meet to experience people being passively or openly aggressive with each other. Be cordial with everyone, no snide remarks, passive aggresive asides, or open insults to any other person or I will approach you and ask you to resolve the situation. If you are not willing to do that I will ask that you leave.

Please let this be fun for all involved and know that even if a situation is between you and someone else, is affects everyone else in the apartment. Be respectful.

I'm sorry I have to do this but I just want us all to be on the same level of understanding.

Only 10? Kuribo could probably name 50 favorites.
I only need a few since I doubt we're going for more than one night

In post 1469, Jake from State Farm wrote:is there a daily itinerary setup yet?
No, I haven't been really around Oliver / finals, but we will be discussing it on the 12th when my first round of finals are through

Also, the itinerary won't be daily, per se. We will plan for specific things on certain days, like a gay bar, the theater trip, aquarium, etc. But a fair chunk of the stuff we do will be spontaneous.

Also, I'd like to say that if people could get on a sleeping schedule that they are asleep by 2am on weekdays and 3am on weekends that would be optimal. We have neighbors and there are going to be 20 of us, so I would like to be reasonable and not get a noise complaint. Also if we wake up at 3pm every day we will not really have time to do much. So just like mooove your sleeping schedule to a point where that is possible. If you're up after 2am on weekdays or 3am on weekends you of course can do whatever you want but we'll ask you go to the apartment basement (which is pretty cool and has couches and a (crappy) workout room so you can go there to play games and shit.

And if there are people that are early sleepers that's the joy of having two apartments on separate floors as well, we can accomodate if some people want to be asleep earlier we can always move everyone to one apartment.

sooo there is a LOT of transit in bmore that can get us like anywhere (to inner harbor, penn station, peabody, ETCETCETC) so we can get around it, and a lot of it is free

It would be sexy if we had it but there are easy ways around it. ONLY thing is getting people to the airport. There is free transit to and from penn station.

It's useful to have some cash on you for when people chip in for things

Also noone is going to get mugged and even if you did that is actually a reason to keep 20 bucks on you so you dont get shanked

Maybe 50 US dollars on you to be safe? You'll probably need 30 tops but it's better to overestimate I guess

We currently have nine beds and air mattresses (3 queens I believe, 2 fulls, 3 twins) so that's at worst 12 sleeping situations and we obviously need eight more not including sleeping bags which are a last resort. I'll e in Baltimore starting tomorrow night and will be asking around for spare ones and Oliver expects to get at least two before coming down so I think at minimum we will have 15 spots on beds but the last few are just being an issue. If someone traveling by car brings an air mattress it saves a lot of calling by me

At worst maestro said he has sleeping bags for the last few spots and we will just have to switch out over the weekend when we have over 15

I'm not gonna get into the math of how i got 12 but it's basically that Oliver and I will share a bed and so will glork, singer and quad

So 12 not counting Oliver and I

Oh look that was the math

We now have 15 sleeping spaces out of the 20 needed for the weekend so we will try to get to 17 but we may have most people have one night of floor duty

Did anyone see this? I can try to get closer if it's too inconvenient, but I should really know soon.
Apparently maestro has this handled

Thanks for making it less magical DGB

I don't think there's bed bugs in it because my apartment isn't like that but I guess I'll leave it

People are moving out because they're graduating I think someone just didn't know what to do with it

Also my friend moving out just offered me a full sized mattress and a futon but they will take up so much room in the apartment

I guess we can take one and leave it in the apartment

If we take both that's 18 spots sans the questionable bed in the main floor of my building which would make it 20 spots

Ok we have 18 definite sleeping spaces sans sleeping bags and can have 2 more easily if we want it but it's gonna be annoying to get the mattress to my apartment so I think we will just live with two people sleeping in sleeping bags on the weekend
