Summary

The party moves into the abandoned mines. They trip a tripwire and an alarm goes off. They proceed to walk into what looks like an old mine office, and gets ambushed by bunch of kobolds. They kill off the kobold sorcerer before he can get any spells off, and proceed to take down the rest. They capture one alive, and learn that this is just a small scout force of a larger force, currently investigating the mines for useful minerals. Saag breaks its legs and let it go. It crawls away.

They travel south, where they encounter more kobolds. They engage in combat and take them down. They find the kobold camp and loot it for gems. Ciel crosses the bridge, and gets almost dragged off by a shadow spider. The party throws things at the spider, and it limps away.

The party hears loud booming sounds like something heavy is dropping from the east corridor, so they decide to go check it out. They find a very large open chamber, with sprawling ruined stairways. There are no railings, and the drop is 100+ ft below. There are signs of something heavy dropping on the stairs everywhere, along with webs. Party walks forward a bit and a Huge spider comes crashing down. The party fights back, but it impales Ciel and climbs back up, where it eats him. Rest of the party runs back to the way they came from.

Party travels south and finds a room filled with spider webs and eggs. They see a chest, so they tried to drag it out but disturb a nest of baby spiders. They fight them off, and they get some loot. The mother spider came after awhile, but Thog chopped it down with 2 swings. They found a magical necklace in one of the chests.

They traveled to east, and ran into a large chamber with a lot of acidic damage everywhere, with bubbling sounds. They turn back.

They go back to the mining office and head east. They run into some rubbles of what possibly may have been mining supply rooms. They run into more baby spiders and fight them off. At this point, a large blue/red spider comes out and begin to throw poison-soaked web at the party. Anias casts sleep to buy time and party runs back out the mines.

Don't worry about falling behind, since you get a lot of bonus xp to catch up.

Players, there is a decision to be made for the campaign: whether to go back into the dungeon after resting one night, or traveling back to town, sell loot/buy supplies, and then heading back to the mines. (this option causes 4 day delay minimum)

This decision creates certain differences in the monster population you will encounter. (i.e. it is more likely that the kobolds sent a group to investigate after few days, etc)

Removing all threats (threats as viewed by Praxleni) completes the task set out by Maria Whitlane.

She rewards each of you with a masterwork weapon of your choice, or 300g. Please post your decision regarding which regard you would prefer.

In addition, 3000xp is rewarded for lv 2s, 4500xp is rewarded for lv 1s.

We are checking out the main mines next session, as well as finishing the "boiling room" if you guys wish.

I will now write the sessions summary.

Summary

PCs travel down once more. They head over and defeat the Crush Spider, and retrieve the amulet from its dead body. They head over to the blue/red spider and present the amulet. The blue/red spider opens up a secret passage and brings the PCs to Praxleni, an aranea friend of Lady Whitlane. Praxleni asks the PCs to remove the derro cultist threat in the southern chambers, to which PCs agree.

PCs head to the center room to investigate the spell circle. Anias almost drop off the ledge to his doom, but he is saved by Thog. Thog and Saag arrive, and they find an ettercap inside the spell circle. It warns them about the "spider king who crushes" but upon learning that the Crush Spider is dead, it and its minions attack. Saag and Thog makes quick work of them, and they cut off its head. They find another magic necklace off of it. They head over to the eastern passage and see some kind of ritual going on by the Derro and kobold slaves. They charge in and slaughter all of them, and they head over to the underdark entrance and kill the derro and their kobold slaves there too. They shut off the passageway, completing their mission.

The difficulty of this dungeon is about comparable to the abandoned monastery dungeon from the start of the last campaign.

Of course, you guys chopped through this one much easier since you guys had a much stronger team composition.

I do think you should play what you want to play, and after talking with you, it sounds like you would really enjoy playing a ranger 2/cleric X over a pure cleric.

Sure, having a cleric helps not dying. A lot. But you don't need a cleric to survive. I've seen many parties without a cleric do quite well.

ConMan, or any other player for that matter, should not be expected to "bail out" the party by playing a pure cleric, when he would rather be playing some other class.

Summary

Main mines fight. PCs climb down, only to get surrounded and attacked right away by massive number of kobolds. They chop through, then explore to the west. They find a tiled corridor, leading to chilly prison cells. There they encounter skeleton archers and a Deathlock (Ice). Anias almost dies, but they manage to run away safely. They clear out some of the other rooms, but arrive at a gorge with kobolds shooting at them. They retreat, find another path, and confront the kobolds. Thog bravely lunged forward while the boss was blind from Vert's glitterdust, but enough kobold guards block him and fend him away. Boss clears his eyes and starts sniping, but Saag breaks through the kobold frontline, into the bridge, where he grows in size to Large. Kobold guards try to stop him, but they get cut down as enraged Saag charged across the bridge to the boss kobold, enveloping him in his 20ft reach. Nowhere to run, boss tries to fight back, but Saag lands a critical hit and destroys the Boss. Rest of the kobolds surrender.

So ends the early hack and slash portion of the campaign.

We will be investigating the deeper levels of the mines next week. We will be going through the undead area to reach the staircase leading downwards, so be prepared accordingly.

Campaign 5 - Cutscene 3.7

-In Cassios's Prison

Summary

PCs travel down with the doctor and defeat a number of undead, traverse green slime filled corridors, and finally reach Cassios's prison, where Millie is imprisoned. It's revealed here that Millie and doctor were exploring this level together when they were attacked by Cassios, the jailwarden. Millie was cursed by Cassios, so she started to slowly lose Con and Cha and was unable to leave the prison. So she cast geas out of a scroll onto the doctor to force him to bring back help, which he did. Adventurers defeated Cassios and his minions and rescued Millie. They received a sum of money in return for keeping this quiet from Maria.

Thoughts

Who's Reach + Great Cleave doing major work today. The undead couldn't even close distance right. Wand of CLW obviously also doing solid work. Cassios could have been a tougher opponent if one or both the melees failed the will save vs fear. Good coordination on focusing and eliminating enemy DPS early on. It got dicey towards the end but ConMan wasn't in much real danger thanks to huge reach your melees had. Can you guys imagine doing this dungeon with your old party? I think it'd be TPK at the Cassios Prison. Not even enlarged Kat could carry against that many opposition. Also, I think if you guys conserved spell slots, you guys probably could have cleared the bonus rooms and rescued the prisoners. (rip bonus xp and treasure)

Maria offers nothing but the letter. Being train guards allow you to be carrying weapons on the train. Payment to you will come from Captain Regul. You may ask Maria about the city of Bogata, and the guards there.

Millie offers a scroll of your choice. It must be 6th level or lower, and the spell must have no additional xp/material costs. Being in the luxury compartment gets you good food and better social stature while talking to NPCs on the train. You may ask Millie for additional descriptions of Alexandria.

Dr. Benedict offers nothing but the letter. He knows some people who can sneak you inside the mithral ore crates being shipped to Bogata via the steam locomotive. He suggests that you and him split the extorted money 50/50. You may ask Dr. Benedict about the Red Pillar guild.

Benedict's findings are a number of differences in writing style between Dr. Mozack's papers from before and after 6 months ago, and the fact that Dr. Mozack has not demonstrated any ability to craft wondrous items or magical arms/armor in the past, when craft construct feat needed for homunculus creation requires them.

Summary

PCs get on the train, but not before fighting off bunch of hooded men dressed as guards. They beat them and find the real guards. PCs meet NPCs. Vincent Harif, Mehani Harif, and Finlay Harif, the artisan family. Corinne, the red haired woman who has something on her mind. Elizabeth Roseweave and Christopher Cierci, two nobles who know Millie. Sanki Fuller, a rude banker. Butler Argyle, the butler. Conductor Ross, the conductor. Harpy lady named Maetra. Gnoll captain named Yaksol. Maetra gives Finlay a flying ride outside.

They arrive in the redberry fields owned by goatmen. With some listen checks and see invisibility, Brian Skies detect Christopher sneak into the fields and stealing some berries. Chris trips over a trap and gets powder dumped all over him, as well as ring alarm bells. Goatmen come after them. Elizabeth draws her sword and goes to save Chris, so the PCs rush in as well. Eliza almost dies, but PCs manage to wipe out the goatmen and run away. They make it back to the train. PCs yell at Chris, but Chris simply counts the berries he stole and tell them to leave his room. Thog beats the shit out of him before getting stopped by the guards. Maetra yells at the gnoll captain for not saving the passengers.

They are at the bridge leading to Thundercrag, but there is a giant boulder in the way. Gnoll captain drinks a potion of enlarge potion and goes to remove it off the track, but the ground under him suddenly becomes slippery and he falls down to the depths below. Illusion fades away and more goatmen arrives. PCs kill the goatmen and the ogre shotgunmen but by the time Maetra arrives with a healer the gnoll captain is dead. Conductor Ross remarks that his throat has been cut, and suspects foul play.

Guys, I was wondering if we could play on Saturdays instead, instead of Sundays. Same time.

Alternate time I'm considering is playing from Midnight to 3 AM East Coast time. This means Who/GIF is playing from midnight to 3AM on Saturday night, Brian is playing from 9PM to Midnight on Saturday night, ConMan is playing from 5AM to 8AM on Saturday morning, and Hana is playing from 2PM to 5PM Saturday afternoon.

Session Summary

PCs are trying to figure out who could have killed the gnoll captain. Corinne Laplace reveals herself as an investigator working for the Bogata Watch. She has asked around for alibi and learned that while the train was stopped:

Conductor was with the engineers.
Guards were patrolling the train.
Father Eustus left his room and went into the cargo.
Harif family stayed in their room.
PCs, Maestra, and gnoll captain were outside.
Banker was arguing with one of the guards demanding that train start moving immediately.
Butler, Elizabeth, and Chris were tending to Elizabeth's injuries.

Therefore, unless there was an unknown 3rd party aboard in the train, only one who could have murdered the gnoll captain was Maetra. When she presents her findings to Maetra, Maetra gets offended, yells at her, and slams the door in the face. Corinne then asks the conductor to perform a train wide search to rule out an unknown 3rd party. There actually was a hobo stowaway in the cargo. Corinne quickly arrest him, but the train is attacked by a pack of gargoyles. The butler fell screaming with his arms ripped off, but Moriko calmly eliminated the gargoyle threat, and loss of life was contained to just the butler.

Later on, the guards ask Saag to join them in a midnight lynching. Anias joins them too at Saag's request. They saw Father Eustus leave his room for some reason when the train stopped, and suspected him of murdering their captain. They broke into his cabin and held him down while they searched his room. They found a number of cryptic self-torture devices, along with a book written in strange code. Percy the Guard was ready to throw Father Eustus overboard when he found these strange things, but Saag wanted to talk to him, so eventually the guards backed off. After they backed off, it was discovered that Father Eustus was poisoned and rapidly losing Constitution. PCs knocked on everyone's doors for help, and Elizabeth mentioned Chris probably have some delay poison potions. They bought one off of him for double market price, and traded the berries they got off of him for another potion. After the trade, Lukas rushed into the room and ate all the berries.

Delay poison took effect and PCs were able to have a nice talk with Father Eustus. He is a cleric of Vecna, deity of secrets. He is currently traveling to Bogata in order to meet her daughter, Linnet. He has not seen her in 7 years. His deity has not been granting him spells for some time now, and he suspects that it's because he or his family (his daughter) has angered Vecna somehow. Multiple attempts on his life has been made by a cult based in Thundercrag town. He claims that he does not know the reason why.

Later in the night, PCs find that Mae has not returned to her room yet. Worried, Anias cast

clairvoyance

and learn that the rope connecting her to the train is not there. The PCs go to the conductor, and the conductor was surprised to learn that the rope has been removed. Mae is most likely dead, as the weather outside is brutal, with low visibility and a powerful thunderstorm going on. In addition, Corinne reports in with the news that the hobo has escaped and the guards who were guarding him have been killed.

With this in mind, the PCs finally arrived at Thundercrag.

Question about Ultimate Magus:
Spontaneous Divination (ACF in Complete Champion) allows a wizard to cast divination spells spontaneously. Ultimate Magus requires the ability to "spontaneously cast 1st-level arcane spells". Can a wizard with spontaneous divination go into UM?
They obviously can't get double caster-progression because that would be obscenely overpowered. Can they enter it for the other benefits it provides though? A 5th level wizard's only options for level 6 is either guildmage (Which requires 2 feats to enter out of the 3 they have), Master Specialist, which is useless until level 3 but you have better options for what to take at level 8, and wizard 6, which gives nothing at all. Ultimate Magus' Arcane Spell Power is better than nothing. So basically would a 1-level dip for arcane spell power work?

Ultimate Magus is pretty obviously intended for Wizard/Sorcerer multiclass characters, and I wouldn't allow such method and let a pure class enter it.

Both guildmage and MS are solid options for PrC. Pure wizard is also viable, as the wizard class already is incredibly strong.

PCs are traveling from Glueba to Bogata, as per 3 separate requests made by 3 different NPCs:

Lady Maria Whitlane, head of the Glueba rangers, who is sending the PCs to help out the captain of the Bogata Watch deal with a thief.
Her younger sister, Millicent Whitlane (goes by Millie), who wants the PCs to find her childhood friend, Alexandria, who is supposedly in Bogata somewhere, studying.

I'm writing up a summary Who.

Thog died.

Summary

The train arrived in Thundercrag. The town is located inside the mountain. The outer area containing the train station looks devastated. Conductor orders his guards to scavenge fuel from the wreckage, and asks the PCs to investigate the town. Corinne Laplace requests to join them, since she has a map of the town, and because she does not believe it to be very safe in the train.

Party walks in and is attacked by shrapnel gun wielding ogres and townspeople who have gone mad. As the townspeople are killed, they leave behind this yellow cloud of spores. Ogres are wearing gas masks to prevent being affected by these spores. Corinne warns the PCs to avoid the spores, and then she marks out 4 areas on the map most likely to contain survivors from the town.

As the PCs progress towards the marked points, they find survivors and learn that couple days ago, the town was overwhelmed with a large yellow cloud of spores. Soon, townsfolk began to go crazy and start murdering those who have not succumbed. Some people managed to hide themselves, but most people are dead or infected now. In addition, a number of non humans, ogres and goatmen, has been seen among insane townsfolk. The insane people seem to follow their orders.

As PCs rescue the last of the survivors, Lukas hear a large group of people coming their way. Soon, doors all around the town open and a massive horde of infected appear. PCs get into defendable chokes and hold them off. Lukas manage to make it back to the building other survivors are holed up in. Moriko's fireballs, Anias's legion of sentinels, and Saag prove highly effective against holding their positions.

Things go bad as goatmen shapers arrive. They have ability to open up passages in the walls, making the rooms unsafe. Anias and a survivor is overwhelmed as Saag races to the left side to cut the goatmen off. Saag takes some damage but takes them down. At top side, survivors retreat into a small room and lock the door, but an ogre rips the door down, and they fire into the chamber, dealing heavy damage to most people inside. As things get even more desperate, a giant goatman smashes through the south walls and join in the fight. He has a massive aura of spores around him, making it difficult to approach him.

Anias turns himself invisible and begins making his way north, but gets infected with spores. He casts whelm on himself to knock himself out, but fails. He soon succumbs to the voices in the head and attacks Saag, but Saag knocks him unconscious and continue northward.

Moriko falls unconscious, gets healed by Lukas, then barely makes the next shrapnel blast before using up her last fireball to take out the concentrated force of infected villagers and the ogres. The fireball wipes them out cleanly. Unfortunately, the NPCs, Hana and Lukas are trapped inside the building surrounded by many feet of spore clouds. Outside, Thog wades into combat against the giant goatman.

Moriko dim hops Father Eustus out the walls before running out. Moriko fails her fort save against the spores. Corinne and Lukas also rushes out and make their saves. Battle rages between the giant goatman and Thog, but Thog is on verge of going down. Goatman gets hit by Moriko with a ray of enfeeblement, but then proceeds to crit Thog into the ground. Thog resists dying with mad foam rager, and asks Lukas for healing. Unfortunately, Moriko succumbs to the effects of the spores and fires magic missiles at Thog, reducing his hp pool even further. Lukas heals Thog with a cure critical wounds, but it wasn't enough. As the mad foam rager ran out, Thog managed to take out the giant goatman. Killing the giant goatman removed the mind affecting effect over Anias and Moriko. Everyone begin to run for the train as more infected were on their way.

Outside, the train was under attack by the infected. Conductor took a quick vote, whether to leave the adventurers behind or not. Conductor, engineers, guards, Harif family, the banker, and Chris all voted to leave. GuyInFreezer and Elizabeth voted to stay. Train takes off without the PCs, but GIF burns 3 dimension doors to teleport those left behind onto the train.

Make the following changes on your character sheet:

Level is now 7.
Experience is now 21000.
HP is now 50.
Base saves are now +5, +2, +2.
Base Attack Bonus is now +7/+2. (you can attack twice per turn if you do not move, or limit yourself to a single 5-foot step)
You can now Smite evil 2/day, instead of 1.
You can now remove disease 1/week.
You get 1 1st spell per day, instead of 0.
You get 6 skill points. Spend them as you wish. Unless you want to ride a horse, in which case put them all on ride skill.
You get a feat. Before you pick a feat let me ask you if you want to ride a horse around, because......

Paladins are able to summon a special horse as a full round action. The horse lasts 2 hrs/lv, so 14 hrs total. Every time you summon it, it appears in full health, but if it dies, then you can't summon it again for 30 days or until you level up. You can dismiss your horse as a free action if it look like it might die or something. Your horse has 45 hp and AC of 18, with speed of 50 ft.

Choosing the ability to summon your special horse means that you can't use Charging smite. I would swap out your travel devotion feat for mounted combat feat, and pick up Ride-By Attack feat.

You get +1 to attack rolls when you are mounted, and if you charge while mounted and you're using a lance, it deals double damage. (so pick up a lance! masterwork lance costs 310g)

Alright, in that case keep the Charging Smite, keep Travel Devotion feat, and take a divine feat. (like Divine Might or Divine Vigor)

You can activate Travel Devotion once per day as a swift action. It lasts for 1 minute (which is 10 rounds) and while it lasts you can move as a swift action every round, which means you can do things like double move and attack, triple move, move and full attack, and so on.

You can get your Travel Devotion daily use back if you expend two of your turn undead attempts.

Hmm, it actually looks like Travel Devotion will be a significant drain on your turn undead attempts, and perhaps you should avoid taking a divine feat. (divine feats use turn undead attempts as fuel)

You can always just take Weapon Focus (Greatsword) for +1 attack roll in that case, or some other feat.

Here's a tl; dr version of what has transpired so far in the campaign, lilith.

PCs have been tasked with a number of errands to run in a neighboring city, Bogata. They get on a train to go there. It's a two-day ride. PCs meet the other passengers:

Vincent Harif and his family, who are artists and they are traveling to Bogata because Vincent have been commissioned to work on a statue there;
Mr. Fuller, the banker, who is not very nice and keeps threatening to "buy out your business";
Maetra, a harpy girl who is currently working as a spotter for the train;
Yaksol, the gnoll guard captain;
Father Eustus, strange masked man who keeps to himself;
Corinne Laplace, investigator working for the Bogata city watch;
Chris Cierci, a noble from the city of Glueba (the city PCs are going away from);
Elizabeth Roseweave, a noble from the city of Glueba and a friend of Chris;

Train stop in the Redberry Hills to refuel, and one of the NPCs named Chris decide to steal some berries from the goatmen farmers. He gets caught, but PCs rescue him and fight their way out. Instead of apologizing, Chris shows more concern for his stolen berries, so PCs beat him up and take the berries from him. Later, gnoll captain dies from trying to remove a random boulder blocking the path of the train. Later, maetra goes missing in a thunderstorm when her rope tethering her to the train goes mysterious undone. A hobo is found in the cargo cabin and is detained. Guards are suspicious of the Father Eustus and confronts him. They were gonna kill him but PCs intervene to save him.

Train arrives at town of Thundercrag to refuel, but villagers are missing. PCs are sent to investigate but they discover that villagers are infected with strange yellow spores and are acting crazy. They fight their way through and escape alive, only to discover that the train has departed without them. Luckily, GuyInFreezer's character uses

Summary of session:

PCs arrive at the train and find the guards wrestling Elizabeth down to the ground. The conductor orders the guards to cut out her tongue to prevent her from casting spells, but PCs intervene to stop that. They back off and go to the engine room, and Elizabeth is found to be poisoned and dying. Corinne demands to speak with the conductor but the guards won't let her through. Saag draws his weapon but guards are faster. Guards try to stab Saag but Corinne gets in the way. Guards stab Corinne, who turns into a flock of crows and fly away. Saag takes the guards down and walk into the engine room, only to find the conductor missing and the crew members dead. Saag search the cabins but he gets

to search the back cabin, which promptly disconnects from the train, leaving Saag behind. GIF cuts the connection between the train engine and rest of the train when he realized that the crates were now full of yellow spores. They rush to take down the remaining guards but then they meet "saag". They realize that it must be a doppelganger, so they don't fall for its tricks. "Saag" goes to the passenger cabin while invis and kills bunch of passengers, but the banker Sanki was ready for him and glitterdusts him. PCs rush down and finish him off, and they trudge along to town of Bogata with the survivors.

City of Bogata.

Unlike its neighboring city of Glueba to the south, Bogata arose primarily as a mining colony. When the nearby Salt Pit was finally exhausted of its minerals, the desperate mine operators scoured the nearby areas for traces of anything worthy of mining. The coastal region few miles northeast turned out to have bountiful iron deposits, and the miners relocated. Over time, more deposits were discovered, and need for labor soared. Slaves supplied by the pirates from the Las Verisa region were transported in for hard labor in the mines, as well as to cut down the ever advancing Glueba jungle. There were numerous slave uprisings, but they were quashed by the vigilant mine owners. However, when the deposits begin to run dry and the pirates were all but broken at the disastrous raid on Lunar Island, slaves were no longer brought to Bogata, and the remaining slaves were eventually freed and settled in the region. The city slowly rebuilt itself as a major trading post that connected between the southern jungle cities and the north's Las Verisa. The old mining town is barely recognizable under the new structures these days, and city boasts its booming population and advanced technology.

The guild of mineralogy and alchemy that was established to verify the mined materials expanded into accepting scholars from all facets. Most scholars study under established professors with doctorates, who study widely different subject matters. This guild is known as the Red Pillar, and it still draws students to this day. An old weaponmaster from the east retired to Bogata twenty years ago and used his funds to set up a temple, dedicated to martial study. This temple drew students from nearby cities and thrived before the untimely death of the weaponmaster couple years ago.

The city was plagued by a group of infamous Gun Mage thieves few years back. They called themselves the White Rose, and they always left a calling card at the place they intended to rob. The City Watch did their best to defend against them, but they were largely unsuccessful. They vanished two years ago, and things remained quiet until few days ago, when a White Rose calling card was found at the entrance of the Red Pillar guild. Captain Bartolo Regul of the City Watch raised alarm and requested to his old friend, Lady Maria Whitlane of the Glueba city for assistance, which she promptly complied.

In the campaign Act 2, PCs have taken a train from Glueba to Bogata, and after a series of misadventures, finally arrived in the city of Bogata.

1st Motivation for Players:

They have been contacted by Lady Maria Whitlane, a NPC who has hired them for adventurer work in the past. She wants them to assist her friend Captain Bartolo Regul of the Bogata City Watch in preventing a robbery.

Spoiler: Shadowcaster Fixes

1) Charisma determines the DC to save against your mysteries. Intelligence determines the highest level mystery you can cast.

2) Grant bonus mysteries per day based on Charisma. These would work just like bonus spells. For instance, if your Cha is 14, you can cast one extra mystery of 1st-level equivalent and one of 2nd-level equivalent per day. (Note that each mystery does give an equivalent level, even though you don't learn them by level.)

3) Eliminate the rule that says you have to take mysteries in a given Path in order. If you want to jump around, so as to broaden your versatility, you can.

4) Within a category—Apprentice, Initiate, Master—you must have at least two mysteries of any given level before you can take any mysteries of the next higher level. For instance, you must have two 1st-level mysteries before you can take any 2nds, and at least two 2nds before you can take any 3rds.

5) Eliminate the rule that says you get a bonus feat equal to half the number of paths you have access to. Instead, you get a bonus feat equal to the total number of Paths you complete. Thus, while you are no longer required to take the entirety of a given Path, there's still encouragement to do so.

6) You may “swap out” mysteries, just as a sorcerer does spells known. If you “un-complete” a Path in this way, however, you lose access to the bonus feat you gained from completing that Path. (You can regain access by re-completing the Path, completing a different Path and choosing that feat as your new bonus, or selecting that feat as a normal feat at your next opportunity.)

7) Once your Apprentice Mysteries become supernatural abilities, change the save DC from 10 + equivalent spell level + Cha to 10 + 1/2 caster level + Cha. This makes them useful even against high-HD opponents, and follows the pattern for other supernatural abilities.
