Game Rules

All Forum Rules and Guidelines should be followed, along with the following rules.

Deadlines

Day phase length is dynamic. Every Day phase will last (amount of living players +2) days.
Night phases will last three days. If, at some point, less than 10 players are alive, Night phases will last two days.

General Rules

Do not quote your role PM, what has been said in PT's or other private communication. Paraphrasing is generally fine.
Keep the game in this thread, and in the PT's you were given access to by the mod. Do not contact anyone outside of these threads about the game.

Do not discuss ongoing games. Meta from finished games is fine.

Activity

If a player doesn't post in-game after a period of 72 hours, I will prod that player.
If a player is prodded, that player has 48 hours to make an in-game post with actual content, not just a prod dodge. If they don't, they will be force-replaced.
If a player received too many prods and/or prod-dodges excessively, that player will be subject to a force-replace.
Setting a V/LA tag alone is not accepted. Please tell me in thread or via PM for how long you'll be gone. If you are going to be V/LA for longer than a week, you might want to request a replacement instead.

Votes and Lynching

Votes must be in the format of VOTE: Player Name or
VOTE: Player Name
. As long as I understand who you are voting for, it's fine. If it looks like a vote, it will count as a vote.
Unvoting when changing your vote is not necessary.
A player will be lynched if they have the absolute majority of votes on them (half of all votes, rounded down, +1).
You may vote for a
No Lynch
. If half of the votes are on No Lynch, the game will proceed to Night without a lynch.
If a lynch is not achieved at deadline, no lynch will occur.
The game goes to twilight once a lynch has been achieved. You may continue to post until I lock the thread.
Once dead, you are no longer allowed to post in any game thread (except the dead thread) until the game is over.

Behavior

Harassment of an individual player is NOT permitted. While this is a competitive game, no personal attacks will be tolerated.
Always play to your win condition.

Breaking the rules

If you break the rules, you will be modkilled or force-replaced (depending on the infringement).
Pretending to break the rules also counts as breaking the rules.
I have the right to change the rules at any time, if needed. I will notify you if this happens.

Setup Information

This is a closed setup.
Anti-Town Faction(s) may or may not have daytalk. I will not anwer questions regarding this.
Mafia can NOT do the factional nightkill next to their other abilities, if any.
You may not target yourself with any ability, unless specified otherwise.
Mafia may or may not have access to factional abilities not listed in their role PM's.
If there are less than 2 players able to communicate in any PT (except for factional and personal PT's) at any time, the PT will remain locked until this is no longer true.
Players will always flip with their full role,
unless there is a special scenario. For more info, see the mechanics.

Mankind has achieved a perfect simulation of reality, both for business and recreational purposes. Everyone with enough money to buy the right equipment can easily join in and be anyone or anything they want. All users are allowed to create their very own environment, connected to a central plaza by a single gate, customizable, just like everything else.
Magnificent, the achievements of this era.

EverHope plaza is, as the name implies, a beacon of hope. It symbolizes humanity's resilience, its ability to create a new life for as many people as possible, even after all went wrong. Don't get me wrong though, everHope is not just another world; it's perfection itself, a utopia unlike anything that exists. It's a place full of beauty and peace, not bound by human nature or similar imperfect concepts. Here in everHope, racism, war, rape and any other form of harm and harassment are forbidden by law. A law that we strictly enforce, no matter what.
And that, my colleagues, is our job here at Simotech.

This, however, makes this harder to tell you what I'm about to say - although it's required that I do. Humanity, as always, has the urge to destroy all that is beautiful. There isn't one thing that once was beautiful and hasn't yet been crushed.
How perfect everHope may be, human nature always finds a way to make its environment just like itself; imperfect. Even we could not stop it.
It means that our utopia is no more; Simotech has been infiltrated.

Little is known about why and how this happened. The few things we do know are classified. All I can tell you is that, recently, several assassinations were performed in everHope, this by a terrorist organisation calling itself Iustitia. Known members include professional hackers, as well as ex-marines, but they have been hiding well. They claim everHope to be "An imaginary nation of aristocratic elitism." I'll spare you the swear words.

Your objective is simple: eradicate all Iustitia members before they eradicate us. Your simulation pods are ready; your rooms will be locked after you access your terminal. In name of Simotech, I wish you the best of luck. Do NOT disappoint us.

Please play the games you sign up for. This game - or parts of it - mean a lot to me, and the reviewers put a lot of effort in making the best of it. Seeing whatever this is makes me feel sad.

It's been a while since I started working here. Or at least, it seems that way.
I was young, ambitious, but above all I had unstoppable hunger for exploring. I wanted to see new things, to be part of things that would become huge and well-known. If people would talk about it, I wanted to be part of it.

The first question is in the mechanics post; yes, they can. They are effectively treestumps, who can still use Reality powers, but don't count towards winconditions.

Changing locations happens at the very end of the night, meaning that, if you get killed during the night you intend to switch, your switch will fail. That also means your old location would still be used to resolve the kill.

A newsflash is being broadcasted on all screens worldwide.
Shocking images and video footage of violence can be seen by everyone, everywhere.
"Hello, everyone. My name is Rick Alan, and I lead the organisation Iustitia, sometimes rather unflatteringly called 'the baby rebellion'. What you are seeing right now are all reported acts of violence by Simotech, the company which most of the aristocratic dogs amongst you worship. Let me tell you that they aren't the security corporation they claim to be."

The image shifts from cruelty to a handsome man, sitting at an oak desk in a dimly lit room.
"Crimes against humanity by Simotech include - but are by far not limited to - electrocuting everHope users in their pods, deleting mental sprites, effectively killing everything but their body, assassinating possible opposition, human testing and so much more."
The man stands up and slowly walks towards the camera. He looks tired and exhausted.

"And that is exactly why we need you. Help us stop the injustice; become a member of Iustitia. We can use any help you can offer. This is not one of those simple 'save the whales' kind of protest; Simotech has announced they will extend their services to our world - yes, you heard it well. They are preparing a privatized army.

Suddenly, the sound of shattered glass overwhelmes his voice. His calm expression was nowhere to be seen; he was very clearly in pain. A large red dot appeared on his chest, and grew fast.

The man falls on the ground, a slight grin now forever on his face. The screen flashes black, and then shows the logo of Simotech.

Today's events, we learned, were only the start of history.

Long ago, inside a distant memory, I founded Simotech. I was seven.
It was pure and innocent, and it was beautiful. Can you imagine a world without evil?

I no longer can.
Power is dangerous, and humans are bound to be corrupted by it. Even people such as Mr. and Mrs. White, pure of heart, humanity's kindest, could not resist. They saw that what they created was beautiful, and protected it at all cost. Even if those costs were the life of civilians, breaking their very own laws, or even the life of their own employees.
They kill him. My son. Aspiring programmer, one that would have changed the world as we know it. The one person who I loved more than anything.

Do you know why? They called him a threat to Simotech's integrity. Is that a reason to kill a human being? Is that even a reason at all? It's about as vague as whatever came out of Jenn's mouth, and boy, that girl had some serious issues.

I left. Not really, but still a bit. I founded Iustitia, together with another employee. All we needed was a face, a name, and a cause. You can be damn sure that we had the latter, oh yes.

Do you know, when the sun sets and still dimly lights the beach? Do you know, when it shimmers and sparkles in the sea, that soft, cosy, orange gloom? That colour, it's beautiful.
I remember it, years ago, when it still existed. Before earth became... this.

Have you ever tried to code a colour that you only vaguely remember? It's hard, I can give you that. I worked for hours and hours, blending, changing, adjusting, until I got that one exact colour. The colour of my dreams. The colour of my hopes.

Just like I kept believing in that colour, I kept believing in humanity. In me, in you, in we. It wasn't easy, I can give you that. But I did it anyway. People are so simple, yet beautifully complex. Did you know that the human memory is not reproducable? It's impossible to model bits and bytes to an ever changing stream of thoughts. Did you know? I do.

I don't always agree with Simotech's actions, but it's for the greater good. Can you imagine that I, a woman of morals, am performing human testing? It's weird, really. I don't like it, but it is required that I do. For the sake of humanity. I believe in a future, and I always will.
And it really is hard, I can give you that.

chapter 6: assault

All screen across the city suddenly changed. After a white flash, the same video was shown on every screen around the globe.

A man, dressed in black, stands in front of a dark, grey gravestone. The rain loudly splashes on his large, black umbrella, a brightly white magnolia being the only bit of light during this scene.
The camera zooms in on his face and zooms in on the tears in his eyes.
"You are the witnesses of yet another crime, shamelessly done by nobody else than Simotech. Our leader..."
The man takes a moment before being able to continue.
"My friend, he was murdered. Assassinated. Killed. Now, THEY think they can stop a rebellion. They dare to think they can stop us, the people, everyone who isn't a wealthy aristocratic dog, by killing the one person who dared to stand up!"
His sadness made place for raw anger, his hands shaking. With every word he spoke louder, angrier, more determined.

"well, THEY ARE WRONG! Nothing, NOTHING can stop the fire of anger. All we needed was a spark, and they gave us that. We are done putting up with their crap about security, about how we should be happy to have them, as well as everHope.
EverHope, my friends, is an illusion. It's a world you'll never be in, because 'everHope is open to anyone' is actually 'to anyone able to afford it'. Can we? No.

Today, I stand here for you as your new leader. I never wanted to do this, but someone has to stand up and kick Simotech's bare bottoms. We gained control of everHope, but that's not even close to where we are going. It's only a matter of time before they regain it.
That is why, as I am speaking right now, we are working to do something better. WAY better.

You will pay, Simotech. And we WILL take more than one life."

A man appears on the screen. The same man as not too long ago. The new face of Iustitia. The Iustitia logo - a black scale with 2 snakes crawling around it - fills the background.

"The deed is done. No more oppression. No more pain. No more fake freedom."
The man pauses for a second and grins.
"EverHope, my friends, is no more. We shut it down in its entirety, and deleted all relevant data. It cannot be recovered in the near future; not by us, not by Simotech. We have been discussing this for a very long time, and it was a though choice. However, we shouldn't forget that this was required. We need everyone to see what Simotech really is. What they do, who they are, and how they feel when they can no longer hide behind their monstrous creations.

Before destroying everything, we searched and decoded the rather well encrypted data - Kudos to that, Simotech. You did something right. - of everHope. We found automated pod scanners that analyse brain functions. We found forced location enquiry code. And that wasn't even the worst; we found data scanners and decryptors, able to detect strings of numbers rooted deeply in your brain. Passwords, phone numbers, bank accounts...
They have it all. They could have robbed you, every single cent you have, and they might still do so.

This war, or whatever you'd like to call it, is not over. At all. We have dealt a major blow to Simotech, but they still exist. They are their own judges, make their own laws and have their own jail. They cannot be sentenced for all their crimes because now, they are in control. Maybe it's time to go back. To reinstall a government, a central police force, a court, each unbiased towards anything or anyone.

Someday, we'll achieve this. Someday, Simotech will pay for what they have done.
And until that day, we will fight."

epilogue: a new hope

Iustitia Headquarters,
San Diego, 2176.

"I have unfortunate news to tell. Very unfortunate news."
The tall man shrugged.
"Our elite team has been wiped out by Simotech after successfully destroying everHope. They will be remembered as the heroes of our time, those who have changed the world. But before that, we have to complete their work. Simotech is up to no good, and for as long as they exist, they will attempt to gain more power. For now we hold back. When we have regained strength, Simotech will be no more. It's a long way forward, but we will get there in the end. Our day will come; but it isn't today."

The eight other men and women at the table nodded in agreement. One woman - Thalia, according to her badge - stood up.
"The artillery division has no need for that. We acquired mortars just a week ago, with plenty of shells to make the Simotech HQ nothing but a faded memory. We are ready for war, Mr. Garish. At your command."

The man laughed when he heard his name.
"Ah, the memories. Very well then; vengeance is a dish best served hot, isn't it?"

Simotech Headquarters,
Las Vegas, 2176.

"We lost everHope. HOW COULD WE?! We needed it, more than anything."
The rather young, blonde woman slammed her fist on the table.
"Kleinfeldt, how have the tests been going? Please tell me you are almost there."

The man in a lab coats shrugged and adjusted his glasses.
"Don't worry about everHope, ma'am. We have gathered plenty of brain data because of the large userbase. The serum is powerful, but still has some... minor issues. We have observed increased strength, fast tissue regeneration, increased skin thickness, reduced anxiety and even the ability to mutate certain body parts at wish. We may even have found a genome infusion that allows external energy manipulation.
Now that I think of it, test subject 73 was amazed by the results and wanted to speak to you personally, actual-"

"Where is he and why haven't you told me yet?", the woman interrupted.
Kleinfeldt hesitated.
"I'm... we are sorry ma'am, but he cannot speak to you anymore. He... he snapped his artery using his teeth. Insanity is one of those minor issues that occur after continued usage or abstaining. The ARCH serum is on the verge of a breakthrough, we just need a little more time. We are sorry, ma'am."

The woman grinned.
"After continued usage or abstention ... don't worry about it. If the guys grow insane or are no longer of any use, they are no longer our problem. Start large-scale production of the serum immediately."
"Ma'am, we can't just let them..."

"Haven't you heard me? Or do you want to be test subject 74?"
The woman opened her purse and grabbed a gun. She pointed it at the doctor.
"No ma'am. I'm sorry, ma'am."

She grinned yet again.
"Very well then. Initiate Project ARCH."

About project ARCH: it is the sequel to this game. I haven't started on it yet, but it should be around somewhere this summer if I still feel like modding.
This game was a drag, and I'm happy it ended. Thanks so much to those of you who pulled me through <3

I disagree that it's a bad ability because, while not powerful, it stirs things up. Evil? Maybe. But like, it's existence was hinted at in the rules section, actually twice even. I thought it was a nice way to counter pseudo-masonries.
You dislike it, and I can totally understand why you do. I hope you understand why I used it, though?

I think most players, if not all, can and peobably should keep this game somewhere not too far in the back of their heads. I don't blame anyone for anything and I know for one that I'm a terrible mafia player myself but...

I hope some of you see that if everyone throws their ego in the game, it becomes a toxic mess.
If a few hyperpost and the others lurk, the gamestate will become ehh...this.
Lastly, the game had so many underused/unused things. Mafia had some cool stuff and just didn't use it.

All the power mafia had was rather weak, but could be very powerful if used at the right moments.
The town PR's were kind of designed with the same philosophy; they needed to make decisions about where to reside, but they coule increase their strength by quite some if they worked together closely.

Eventually none of that happened but whatever
