It’s not so much the (lack of) randomness as the overly forced theatricality.

I had yet to rep in but I don’t recall you doing that in 1952 aaron?

I have no desire for teacher to claim unless he needs to, but I have 0 alignment reads so far, so I have no issue with hammering anyone here provided I think they are scum.
It is even worse than this, which is illogical as heck. What does hammering me here give you? Does it create alignment reads?

I get that wagons are good for reactions, but why be ok with hammering in a game that’s on page 2 and has eight days before deadline? Like, really?

As an aside on the wagon thing, I kinda like what you did but lolhammers are a thing, especially when people haven’t checked into the threat. I usually wait for everyone to post before we get to L-1 because some people rvs without reading the thread and then you’ve bought two mislynches (the wagonee and the innocent hammered) for the price of one.

I’m hating the slowness of the game. I’ve got like 2 reads out of rand and we are a couple days in. Let’s try some getting to know you questions to hopefully start things off into the week. All slots kindly answer.

1. What is your experience at Mafia
2. How do you play as town
3. How do you play as scum
4. What do you think gives away a player as scum or town
5. Time zone/standard posting times

1. Appr 20 games, mostly here but a couple on another site.

2. I effort obv-town, but Have less time when schools in session.

3. I effort obv-town

4. I use tone more than I used to. I also motivations, probabilities, and associations. For each post, I try to ascertain the motive behind it. Does it seem town-motivated or scum-motivated. To be sure, both town and scum have similar objectives, but they arent overlapping. Town is not as afraid of being lynched, because there will be a mislynch at some point; scum knows that their death is 50% of a loss. Town wants to out real analysis to advance the game; scum wants to repeat information that everybody knows so they can appear to be helping without actually doing it. Another key area of difference is in probabilities. Here, I cant say it much better than a strategy article from the Wiki (link). I'll speak more on associations tomorrow if Im still kicking.

5. Late night/early morning nyc time or mobile fun in free periods

Use the links. If you want to quote a whole post (as here), just hit the quote button on the top left of the post. I’d you want to quote only part of it, highlight the relevant text first, then click the same button. The advantage of using them is the automatic links the system codes so that we can go back and see the original material.

I disagree. You took the randomness out of RVS, by denying agency for your vote and not voting another slot. Both actions suggest sensitivity to how you would appear. It could reasonably be seen as AI.

Outside of that, I have mixed feelings on you. Like I liked the pressure move on my slot, but not the reaction to Frosts question (which did read to me as being ok with a page 2 hammer “here” though I recognize you disclaimed that). I also like the drive for participation, though it could be lamisty.

Ultimately, I TL you despite these pings because I don’t think scum would be poking the thread in the way you have; they’d rather let it skate along quietly. The wIM I see is outweighing what may simply be playstyle differences.

I dont like the thought lynching one of the two people who is fighting upstream to keep this game somewhat alive.

Im going to need something from Dong pretty soon or thats my preferred lynch. Also open to Chibi or Yoda atm. Spartan and Salad are pretty off the table for me.

I will say we want to be coalescing in around 48 hours, so I will definitely play tonight. Im sorrya bout last night -- the site was being wonky and mod duties come first.

I don't think Dong is scum. Calm people can panick, that's not what he's saying here.

But I don't think teacher is scum just because he panicked at L-1. Wouldn't any role would panick if they're about to be lynched d1 from an RVS?
I read 56 as saying he cant read too much into my reaction because Im generally pretty relaxed. The implication being that my reaction is pretty relaxed, just like my general play Thus to me, 56 directly contradicts 102.

Im not sure I understand your post, but I think you are saying you read 56 differently (Im not sure what "here" is in your post). How do you read it?

In post 116, GeorgeBailey wrote:I read it as more of a comment on your overall character, simply stating that according to previous posts, you're pretty relaxed. Then he contrasted that to the fact you freaked out at being put to L-1, and that an experienced Town wouldn't do that.
I dont think 56 was a comment about my overall character. It was a response to a direct question about my reaction, and it was saying my reaction was NAI.

In Dong says my post is no big deal -- "I dont think
the response
is telling"
But in , Dong makes a big deal of the exact same post -- "I dont like Teacher's
response
"

I bolded response here, because he is talking aobut the EXACT same thing - a specific post, not a general character. Before it was NAI, but now -- when Im one of the few active posters in the game, and indicating openness to him -- he says it was AI. I see this as a more nuanced version of OMGUS. I dont think this is a towny evolution in the context of this game.

Sure I'll engage.

Why Yoda as a townlean? Why George as a scumlean?

But I would also like the answer to Aaron's question. Plus, why do you think Salad is town? (if i'm reading that right).

Taking the questions in order:
Yoda is a townlean mostly by PoE. Meaning I like him better than the two other low-post slots (Merfin or Chibiie) and generally try to limit myself to two w/i rand. I feel like the other two were doing a bit more of an active lurk. Merfin came close to being replaced (which is statistically scummy), avoided my questions, and the push on spartan didn’t feel real. Chibi has been playing the newby card a bit much and didn’t engage the game at all til 131, which felt bandwagonny. As for Yoda himself, kinda liked on balance because of that. Sure, it gives an excuse for lurking which scum!Yoda would want, but it takes away the option to play the newbcard, which I don’t think scum!yoda would give up. I also thought showed a genuine effort to sort.

George was a scumlean because of and . I don’t like the “no reason now” – it implies there was a reason before. The only reason I can come up with is pressure. But if that was the reason, there is no reason not to vote another slot, as I said in 81. So there not consistency in approach. The same is true for the 82-111 sequence. In 82, George votes Spartan for making what the board had
already
established was a pressure vote, but then takes the same action himself (pretending to just realize the pressure thing). I will say that I have reevaluated this slot, however, and think it should be higher.

Salad is a townread by meta. I have played with them or modded them at least twice (cant remember which) and they tend to be lynchbaity town. His tone and acknowledgment of this do not strike me as hiding behind meta, but rather trying to help through it. His activity levels alone take him off the table for me in this game which is struggling for content.

@George/board: I need some help. I am getting myself in conf-bias land regarding Dong’s contradiction and overall play.

On the contradiction, Ive posted about it several times but nobody’s engaging with it (other than to tell me they don’t see it). Can someone explain to me why this either (a) isn’t a contradiction, or (b) is NAI?
Spoiler: contradiction one more time
In post 56, Donempire wrote:teacher is a pretty relaxed player overall so i dont think the response is telling.
Here, there is no problem with my response (and I think the implication is my response is pretty relaxed, otherwise why say the first part).
In post 102, Donempire wrote:I dont like teachers response to getting wagoned. . . . . teacher was panicking here.
Here, there is clearly a problem with my response, and I am no longer pretty relaxed)

Outside of that, in the early game Dong claimed to be a werewolf () and claimed not to know there was daychat () – both things Ive seen scum do, and both of which are, at best, simply WIFOMy that do not help a solve in any way. In the later game, he avoids the general questions (), does not respond to a direct question asking for reasons to avoid them (), and also does not engage on the contradiction (). Instead he declares v/la, without doing any real sorting on most of the board.

Finally, his read on me is contradictory. He says multiple times how experienced I am – saying that as town I should have no problem keeping calm. But why, then, does he assume expert!me makes a newb!scum play of panicking?

(FWIW, I disagree that I was panicked – I think I made the exact post he would expect me to make in , but here I am trying to play through his mindset. I simply don’t see how Dong’s read is the product of a consistent mindset rather than a motivated push on the most active player).

1. No lynching does not "add a target for scum." Whether or not we lynch today, we must catch a scum by D3. All no-lynching does is turn worst-case D3 lylo (3-2) into mylo (4-2). This actually lowers the odds of successfully lynching scum on a day where scum must be lynched or town loses (hence lylo - lynch or lose/mylo - mislynch and lose)

2. In order to catch a scum by D3, we need all the information we can get. Mislynches provide info. Who is pushing it, who gets onto it at a key time for weak reasons, who avoided the wagon like the plague. Scum is most regularly 1-on, 1-off town wagons. If they are both together, they are both on far more often than both off. Its information like this/vcas that is imperative.

3. There is minimal risk of hitting PRs (and doing so can be good). Wagons must build to L-1, then to intent (absent deadline pressure). At intent, the PR can claim. If they are the real PR, then they dont get lynched, we have chained the NK in a way scum might not have wanted and PRs might protect, and we can do the same VCA but now without even the cost of a town.

4. Literal no downside. Sure, towny could die. But see 1, it doesnt change day structure/number of targets for scum at all.

It stinks right? or am I just missing some sort of meta where he acts all random looking for a lynch.

My issue with you putting things down to his townmeta especially now I know youve not seen his scum meta is what if they both look the same, what if this is scumsalad?
This is in fact off-meta for him; he has been somewhat more active/involved in discussion/open about randomness than he was in Newb2080. So Im not putting it down to town meta.

Its more that I expect him to be lynchbait, so Id rather hunt elsewhere today because he is a slot that I think gets solved through progression/interaction/investigation more so than others.

I townread him for keeping the game alive, but that has faded a bit in the last couple reallife days. I could compromise there, but would much rather get Dong through for actual scumtingles and I dont want to let attention off his slot simply because hes not posting.

Spartans a nonoption for me.
Salads vote has somewhat soured me on dong, but he’s still in my lynchpool.
So are salad himself and merfins slot.
We need to start consolidating.
I’ll happily vote w Aaron and sparty, we need to be forming a block and those are my two strongest reads Rn.
School for the day.

It’s the same slot - I use both to inform reads.

@Aaron-I actually like lynching inactices D1. Actives will eventually spew alignment, and inactives tend to be lylo liabilities if town. I have longer posts on this theory written up that I will dig up later.

But given that [creeper] has not contributed any scumhunting OR (and the OR is in fact important here) claimed VLA to return at a date certain, even a green flip would have also removed a liability. This a lesson I learned a little later in my time on MS, but it makes sense to me. D1 and D2, you should of course try to scum hunt. But you should also get rid of town liabilities -- nullish folk that scum wont kill. Town liabilities should not make it to lylo because (1) they are an easy mislynch for scum to push and win the game, and (2) they havent been invested enough to have game-saving reads themselves.”

Top right. But I also use this sometimes when I mod.

Site Tools

For those new to BBcode forums, there are multiple tools to help you (and others) navigate. The ISO link next to each post number will allow you to see all posts made by that single player in the thread. On bottom of the thread, you can set up 2 or 3 player ISOs to see interactions; "display posts by user", "+", and "+" are the links to do so. You can also search a game for all mentions of a player by using their name (or nickname) in the search this topic box on top; * functions as a wildcard in this search. When you want to refer to a specific post, you can provide a link by using the post tags: e.g., "in [
post][
/post], the moderator provided the player list."

In addition, the ego search function allows you to see all threads in which you have ever posted. This can be accessed through "view your posts" on the top of the screen. Finally, clicking a player's name will take you to their profile, where you can ego search them ("view their topics"), search within their posts for similar wording ("search user's posts"), or otherwise conduct meta research - be careful not to talk about ongoing games, however.

This earns scum points for Spartan as he - as stated before - calls out Salad for not investing in game related content while defensively replying to pressure.
Saladman's Lynch on Spartan is nai for me as of now. Going over rest of game soon
Am I mistaken or did you just say you think me calling out salad for not producing game advancing content is scummy?
Keep in mind these are my side thoughts trawling through beginning of day 2 as a sub. Clearly they are incorrect after reading through the rest of the game (content and number - wise).
we can wait for you to read through the whole game and post, with you posting several pages in the past, like you suggest your reads will change over the course of a couple of posts so for everyone reading you it is very misleading.
FWIW, I completely disagree and like spam ketchups. It shows how a player's mind works. Thats the best way to read someone - try to buid their mindset and then test whether they operate consistently. Reads can (and should) change, sure, but what matters is whether they change logically. I already have a better sense of Gimm1ck's approach than half the pl.

I liked gimm1cks spirt of activity and catch on chibi’s Contradiction. That unique thought was +town the o lot reason the slot is on the list at all is that I find replacements mechanically scummy.

Chiniie actually TL nethey have gotten more active and I see their effort to solve. I think it expresses poorly but it is a genuine pattern. I also don’t think some of the errors - no lynch views, TL then Scun you - would happen to newb!scum, who I think would be more afraid of posting.

I join Aaron in finding your switch in dong a little troubling. Like I was trying to play through a possibile explanation for it in my had, but that one didn’t rally track so I couldn’t tell why you defends his slot as much as you did without maybe knowing hi aslignme t. Bottom line is I feel like you’ve played fairly reactively so far and not “shown” yourself.

I hate lynches like this, I don't feel we learn anywhere near as much as we would with proper activity and dialog.
I disagree it has been super easy joining. I feel like I’ve been pushing this for days and nobody would join. So I don’t take the premise of the question that well.

Nor do I take the implication that there is an alternate lynch that well. Because there were few active players, there never really were competing/counterwagons throughout the day. At this point, anybody who got run up to lynch would be “easy” - sure many have joined Dong in the past 24 hours, but are you suggesting we abandon dong because of that simply in order to do the same thing on a diff slot?

This is a conversation we could and should have had 48 hours ago, but now it’s too late to complain about consolidation.

Im loving that everyone motivated (or pretend motivated) to do NKA. And I agree with a lot of it - I do think this was a PR snipe attempt, or an attempt to avoid the obvious protection candidates (Aaron>me).

Im most suspect of those that didnt find a PR hint. On rereading, I thought the repeating word could be a role claim.

EBWOP: The reasoning -- avoid protective candidates, and seeing friendly neighbor possible claims -- suggests to me that we are in Row B.

I havent been able to be much involved this week, but should have more time this weekend/first couple of days next week. The biggest thing I am regretting is not picking up the number of people pushing/SRing Dong but pushing against his wagon, like they didnt want the blame. I was wrong in my reads, and need to start again, but some of that felt like TMI. This is mostly to Spartan/Gimm1ck - can you speak on this?

In case you didnt catch it, I intentionally didnt share reads because I want to start over from scratch and reread the game. I was clearly fairly off base yesterday.

I saw Aaron posting on who could and couldnt be your partner. That's the sort of thing I want to think about on a reread.

I’m also interested in chibie. There’s like 0 reason to be pushing Aaron today - he hasn’t done anything scummy and was basically yesterday’s consensus tr I see that more as a way to appear solvey while salting the ground for lylo paranoia. I also don’t like the change in playstyle across days. I could see that as a partner for salad, which I suppose is my compromise slot but I’d rather try to sort players that haven’t been consensus scum-read as much.

Either way, as yesterday, it’s time to start consolidating.

Double replacements are statistically scummy - scum are twice as likely to replace out compared to town across :0 games (I analyzed this in one of my newb games in the 1940s and correctly found scum).

Chibie is kind of sheeting you, my strongest tr, and because I can’t pair saladman otherwise (possibly yoda). I also really don’t like the push on you - could be chainsaw in addition to omgus.

I’m in class but a little around. What didn’t you like?

Just because it should be explicitly noted, cop, mason, and tracker are all counterclaims to Gimm1ck. Any one of those should speak up.

Ugh, another deadline nearing and we haven’t even heard from salad if he could counterclaim.

I can compromise on salad if needed, especially with gimm1ck there. I’m also happy where I am. Anyone have thoughts?

So we’ve outed one PR (all slots have posted and nobody has countered gimm1ck).

I’m inclined to credit salads claim (because why wouldn’t scum claim PR to counter gimm1ck and potentially survive)?

But I also see legitimate reason to scumread the slot, and am leery our outing another pr.

Anybody want to chat about this? I’m worried I’m not thinking straight in my sleep addled state.

OMG Chibiie, youre my hero!

I realized right as the flip was happening that you mechanically HAD to kill Yoda, so told Plot I lost. But then you went and saved it. Such an awesome teammate.

Ive been away all day, and have to get ready for school tomorrow. I will give individualized feedback in a couple days.

Overall, PRs hid well (this was the first game where I totally struck out), and Aaron your play REALLY improved. But everyone needs to be more active for the game to be fun and for town to have a shot. I mean our 2 person scumthread is about 1/5th the size of this 9p game. It should be like a 10th based on the number of possible viewpoints and relationships discussed.

Finally, while I elected to go ahead and do it here since others were postign as well, please be advised that proper form would be to await the mod confirming game end since other games can have odd mechanics like resurrections and the like.

This game went largely to plan, which was aided by somewhat apathetic town. The posting has been belabored, so I wont hit it again beyond that.

Aaron, your game has improved significantly. I intended to save you for lylo because you were lynchbait last time, but you really towned it up and were fmpov obv-town.

Gimm1ck, your entry and play were similarly excellent. My one suggestion for you would be the N1 target -- George was indeed a likely lynch candidate, to the point that I think investigatives (even weak ones) are better in the null-ish pool that is likely to make D3. Try not to target the person likely to die D2, because your result has more meaning the longer you can sit on it. A no-movement result is not a clear, to the point you could validly argue against that lynch D2, and had that been the lynch D2, the check is wasted.

Yoda - well played from a PR perspective; I cant disagree with your targets though I personally would have saved Aaron over me (being the busdriver on a townflip isnt AI, especially D1, but should at least raise some suspicion after flip). I especially congratulate you for saving Conf-town N3 rather than playing the WIFOM game of letting scum think thats what you were likely to do and guessing elsewhere. You might regret that choice, but having known!town is more valuable than playing the odds. In dayplay, Id feel more comfortable taking part in the discussions despite your role -- I got the sense you were holding back a little to intentionally stay null, which - though a good goal - can be achieved while also forcing other slots to respond/react/share more content.

Salad - man, you remain lynchbait, but still a great player to share a room with. As you see others reason, I would think maybe you could see a little more of the process and start trying it. Here, it honestly felt like you were having fun but not trying to solve. Maybe that feelings off, but I think you have gotten yourself to the point that you doubt your abilities so you dont exercise them - doing the latter will help wiht the former.

George/Dong - to short for real comments. Dong has my right for wrong reasons award; George I think would have developed into a later game threat for us so Im still happy with the NK even if you were a VT.

Spartan - a good town leader; I think RL got in your way D2. I hope it worked out, and I think just get a better sense for how much of a timesuck MS can be.

Plot - the best mod, still.
