dipping my toes in here:
I haven't watched NFL in 2 years. I'm kind of a closet fan. I like the tactical/strategic aspect combined with the athleticism and extreme skill and healthy sportsmanlike competition. I can't stand the commercialism, fandom, greed, arrogance of players, and unhealthy contentious competitive nature it breeds within society, especially with how that affects children on a deep level (schools getting funding for sports over the arts, and kids being raised with a superstar desire mentality, etc. etc.)
got NFL game pass a week or so ago and have been catching up on some stuff so I'm uptospeed for this season
I have a handful of teams I like to watch and follow to varying degrees, and that shifts based on personnel (for example, I never cared about the Chiefs until Andy Reid went there - I love Andy Reid, so now I watch and root for the Chiefs)
I grew up and live in pennsylvania, so I've always been partial to the Steelers and the Eagles and follow them more than any other teams
I also like: Chiefs, Ravens, Seahawks, and loved the Vikings while Favre was there but no longer care
can't stand: Patriots, Cowboys, Packers, Saintsbalance among all things-

because he's already making millions of dollars regardless
I value team and work ethic over money and I'm extremely poor, so when I see the rich quabbling over millions when there is more value in things like relationships with your peers and teamwork and working towards a common goal (being a great team, winning a championship), it's utterly stupid
yes, I understand the business aspect, yes I understand that in that business aspect he might think (or even be) worth "more" than what he's being offered, but it's still nonsense and shows he has poor values, and I can't respect that
it's greedy and shows he values money over football, it doesn't matter that that is 'what practically everyone in professional football does', it doesn't need to be that way and a good person could set an example (there have been plenty who take paycuts so they can stay on their team, I believe Roethlesberger did this some years ago)balance among all things-

yes, it's a deeper complex problem than you're trying to make it out to be
you're valuing the greed over the integrity
if you want to bring health in to it that is ridiculous, 'hmmm my health is worth 15.9 million not 14.2 million' - give me a fucking break, do you love to play football or do you love making money more? if you don't love playing football, then go awaybalance among all things-

if you want to get into a sociological discussion on disparity of pay among disciplines, that's something else and I'm not sure I have energy for that right now
other than to say, teachers need to be paid more and the value they do in their job and how it contributes to society should be held higher than the value placed on professional athletes (but then the whole education system is defunct and needs a rehaul, so, there's issues there of course)balance among all things-

Really? How many people do you know would feel comfortable going up to their boss and saying "yo, pay me more or I'm not coming in" without pissing in their pants that they are going to lose their job?
and you know what happens if Bell doesn't sign with the Steelers? he can not work for a WHOLE YEAR (and longer), live off of previous earnings and likely still get a job in the same field next year if he wants tobalance among all things-

but all I'm trying to talk about is an individual player who should be less greedy, none of that other stuff comes into it
you think a teacher's union is going on strike because they're greedy?
no, that's SEPTA
plus, when the NFLPA organizes a league-wide player holdout, that's something different than what Bell is doingLast edited by drealmerz7 on Sun Sep 03, 2017 2:35 pm, edited 1 time in total.balance among all things-

good convo., btw
and ftr I think most companies don't pay their workers enough and would probably even argue that the NFL franchise owner's are making a disparate amount of money compared to what players make (considering MOST of the players DON'T make as much as the top-tier paid players)
but here I'm only talking about Bell, and again, the salary cap issue comes back into play, as well as his priorities, if he participated in the offseason, cared about his team, and was even willing to take a paycut to allow for more cap room, HE COULD BE ON A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM, but instead, he's being a greedy ego-inflated jerkbalance among all things-

I'm currently watching the Eagles get tramped by the Seahawks from last year
Kaepernick is really good, and I commend him for his integrity as well as raising awareness to social injustice in a setting where he knew it wouldn't be well received by the majority
Flacco is having issues you say? maybe he'll get it back, I imagine he wouldbalance among all things-

From my memory he sat very shortly after a specific incident, like maybe the Trayvon Martin shooting? So I didn't think it was career or game-timing based. My issue with what you say that TwoInAMillion is that it shouldn't BE negativey publicity, the issue is the media spinning it to be a bad thing. There are lots of players who do lots to raise social awareness and combat social issues and they use the franchises and the franchises use them as a backing supportive effort to do good and he and that should be no different, or if it is different, it should be by the extreme positivity in raising awareness. It doesn't need to be a negative distraction at all.balance among all things-

re: Ezekial Elliot :
I think it's pretty simple. There are people who are good at reading people, there are people who are great at reading people. Put me in a room with someone, let me have a 10 minute conversation with them and then I ask them 5 questions and I can more often than not tell you if they're lying. If I can't tell if they're lying or not, I can at least tell I can't tell. Then you've got lie detector tests. It could have been something as simple as Goodell going to Elliot and saying "are you willing to take a lie detector test?" and Elliot says "no" and Goodell says "okay then you're suspended" OR he could have even agreed to the test and failed. As much as people love to hate on Goodell, I think he's done a lot of great for the league and I trust him as commissioner to make good choices, not arbitrary ones.balance among all things-

First, he's not doing anything with precedence, many players have done what he's done before, but, wouldn't it be great if he set an example of "money doesn't matter as much as my doing the thing I love with people I care about" ? (again something that has been done before but could be done more and it could help towards a shift in mentality)In post 436, PJ. wrote:so it's impossible for you to have the discussion about an "individual player" because that player sets a precedent, especially one that is a) the best player in a dying position and b) a hybrid athlete that is on the cutting age of how his position will be played in the future.
not really sure what your argument is or what you're trying to get at, as, my point still stands about him being greedy and valuing his ego and money more than doing good for his team
not familiar with these circumstances but I'm pretty sure my position would be the same for them as it is for BellIn post 436, PJ. wrote: How did you feel about David Carr holding Oakland hostage at the beginning of the summer to become the highest player ever at the time? or the two guys who signed bigger contracts after saying they'd walk if they didn't get extended?balance among all things-

ohdear, I knew the Eagles had gotten rid of Matthews at WR and I was wondering what their WR spread was going to look like...I just looked at the roster
wtf are these WRs and are any of them any good? I've seen a bit of Agholor and know Torrey Smith is decent, but, who are these other guys and is there a hope in hell for this offense with this setup? What happened to Green-Beckham?balance among all things-

it's less about the play call and more about "was the receiver in a position where the QB should have reasonably connected with them?" - I think most of the time it is going to be pinned on the QB, but I do think there are times where it is not the QBs fault but the receiver's, and there's no reason that that can't be factored inbalance among all things-

I feel like you're kind of looking for what the definition of "is" is
when I'm watching a game I can often enough go "that incomplete pass was the fault of the receiver"
most of the time it is a dropped ball, sometimes it's stumbled feet or some other thing that clearly makes my brain go "oh, that was the fault of the receiver"
I don't know why it has to be more complicated than thatbalance among all things-

they're cheaters (and Belichek teaches cheating) , arrogant, sore losers, just downright unlikable people all around
Brady doesn't even register to me as comparable to anyone because he's just on a cheating team so it doesn't matter how good the stats are or people saying he's one of the greatest/the greatest, he'll always be a huge fat ZERO in my mind and I disregard anything about him
that's his legacybalance among all things-

oh, I certainly wasn't favoring browns, "good" is relative for them, too
and holycrap, last week it was Ronde Barber, who sucks at commentating, but then this week it switched to Charles Davis, who is so much fucking worse, Ronde Barber might get mental hiccoughs, but Charles Davis is just baaaad - he repeats himself multiple times and treats each time is like the first time he's said it, or repeats something someone else already said and treats it like it's never been heard before, and just says the stupidest shit all of the time, gaahhhh

Hey, I want to QB bash a bit
Donovan McNabb was mediocre at best with an exceptional coach who figured out how to make a contending team in spite McNabb's mediocrity - I wish we would have seen what he could have done with a good or better QB.
Hey, wait, Alex Smith is pretty good!balance among all things-

you gotta look at the team and coach, no way was McNabb better than Eli
yes, stats might be better, overall team performance might be better, but on an individuality (I know it's hard to judge that in a team sport), Eli is decent, McNabb, mediocre at best

aye, ppl just want to have shit to go do while in vegas and having sports events is just more to do so they'll fill easily
don't they have boxing there a lot?
and if you get the stadium close enough to some other action, it can be even more of a wild and crazy 'event' thing, integrated and multi-faceted (casino sections, other entertainment, that capacity for combination fun in general)
not that I'm a proponent of any of that
it'll be interesting to see if there's an increase of incidents in players and personnel when in vegas/being the home teambalance among all things-
