GAME RULES

SPECIAL MECHANICS:

Spoiler: All about the MC

-What is the 'Main Character'?
The Main Character, referred to as the 'MC' from here on out, is a temporary modifier that a player can gain. The MC is immune to ALL killing actions (including strongman, treestump, etc.) and may not be lynched (except for in LYLO). The identity of the MC will be public at all times, as will the identity of his chosen Party.

-How does a MC die?
The MC can

only

be killed via two or more players on the party targeting the MC (one of these players must submit a killing action). When multiple Party Members submit actions on the same target, all of their actions see 'upgraded priority' and will resolve before any other actions in NAR. Actions with this 'upgraded priority' still follow their own NAR structure, so if one Party member kills the MC and another doctor-protects the MC, the doc shot will still protect from the kill.

This does not extend to factional abilities/kills

. This is the ONLY way the Main Character can die aside from being lynched in LYLO.

-How does someone become the MC?
During the day phase, players vote for a MC. When the day phase ends, whichever player has the most votes for MC will become the new MC during the following Day Phase.
If there is ever a tie (or no votes), the previous MC becomes the new MC.
If there is no previous living MC and no plurality winner in the MC vote, then no one becomes the MC during the following day.
If the voted MC is night-killed before the following day when they would become MC, the previous MC takes their place. If there is no previous MC to take their place, there is no MC for the following day.

-What other bonuses does being MC confer?
During the night that a player is chosen as the MC, they will pick four other players to become their 'Party'.
So long as there is an MC during the following day phase, the MC and the chosen four-player Party will be granted a private topic.
During the day phase that a player is an MC, the MC will decide which Region to visit.
During the night phase following deciding on a region, the MC and his Party may be given rewards based on the Region they visited.

LUMINOUS

- Home to Shadow Realm Omble and the Luminous Labyrinth, this is where many go to learn Shadow or Light magic.

SHRIKE (Tomb of Sei)

- The tomb of an ancient lord of Shrike, Sei. It is said he was a most powerful king.

SHRIKE (Tomb of Mu)

- The tomb of an ancient lord of Shrike, Mu. Conquering the trials of this tomb has become a competition as of late.

SHRIKE (Bio Research Lab)

- Horrible experiments lie in wait for whoever is foolish enough to wander into this forsaken place.

FUSCINATARU

- This is the home of the Charm Lord and the Mystics.

SCRAP

- A total junkworld, many wanderers end up here due to the cheap entertainment and loot to be found.

KOORONG

- The commercialized hub of transportation, with a seedier underbelly.

DEVIN

- An entire region caught up in fortune telling and petty magics, it is said one could learn of Rune or Arcane magic here.

YORKLAND

- A region known for brewing fine liquors, Yorkland doesn't produce much else of value.

BACCARAT

- The casino to end all casinos, it is said a gnome actually runs the place.

WAKATU

- Trinity forbids anyone from visiting Wakatu, as it is a literal ghost-town nowadays.

MOSPERIBURG

- Home to Virgil, the Ring Lord, Mosperiburg is a hostile place with few inhabitants.

NELSON

- A rich port of trade, without any of the criminal aspects of Koorong.

I.R.P.O.

- The headquarters for the Inter-regional Police Organization.

DESPAIR

- The universe's mega-prison. It's said that only one man ever escaped, but no one knows if this is true.

MAGIC KINGDOM

- The inhabitants of The Magic Kingdom pursue science and magic relentlessly; Realm Magic can be found here.

MANHATTAN

- Home to several Megacorps, Manhattan is a clean-cut metropolis outfitted with malls and stores of all kinds.

SHINGROW

- Shingrow's jungles are almost as well known as its annual fighting competitions held in ancient palaces.

I've added flavor to the REGION list and clarified some of the TECH mechanics.
Regardless, there is a lot going on in this setup, so feel free to ask questions any time you don't understand how something works.
I think the biggest aspect that has come up a few times are effects that change how many votes it takes to lynch people.
These effects are additive. So, two people target you with an ability that causes you to take one vote less to lynch, you now take two votes less to lynch.
You will always be informed of how many votes it takes to lynch you.

The only info that you have is that Drixx is the MC for Day 1 and Night 1 and that Drixx does not have a Party.

Drixx is currently immune to being lynched or killed normally--so yes?

If you do play the game, I highly suggest playing either Blue or Red's scenario first.
Both are fun and will help you learn core parts of the game for the rest of the characters you play as.

In SaGa Frontier, the primary stats used for magic are Intelligence and Will.
These are also the primary stats for using Guns, which makes mages all pretty effective gunslingers.

Mystics always have a piece of equipment bound to them that you can never take off.
Most Mystics sport Mystic Mail, which is a mediocre chestplate that quickly becomes outclassed by even mid-game gear.
It's for this reason that Nusakan is one of the best Mystic characters, as his bound item is the best 'Shirt' equipment in the game.
Unfortunately, only Blue and Riki can recruit Nusakan, as he is too spooky for anyone else to confront.

There are four races in SaGa Frontier and each have different mechanics the govern how they level up and fight.
Humans gain stat points relevant to what they did in combat; they can also 'spark' new techniques in the middle of battle!
Robots gain stats depending on the quality of gear they have equipped; they can download new 'programs' from defeated mecs.
Monsters absorb other monsters to learn their abilities and transform into new forms that influence their stats.
Mystics entrap the souls of slain enemies into their equipment; this gives them unique moves and stat increases.

I typically have lots of different characters in different roles, but I've been experimenting a lot. For instance, because the Sword-only Skill 'Deflect' gives you a chance to block attacks made on your team-mates, I've run a few parties of 5 swordsmen. It's actually quite effective!

People have been asking about the Main Character mechanic, so I've decided to clear up a lot of questions in a single post by being thorough about its rules. I'll be editing this into the first post.
If anyone asks a new question not covered here, I'll answer it and edit it into the first posts.

Spoiler: All about the MC

-What is the 'Main Character'?
The Main Character, referred to as the 'MC' from here on out, is a temporary modifier that a player can gain. The MC is immune to ALL killing actions (including strongman, treestump, etc.) and may not be lynched (except for in LYLO).

-How does a MC die?
The MC can

only

be killed via two or more players on the party targeting the MC (one of these players must submit a killing action). When multiple Party Members submit actions on the same target, all of their actions see 'upgraded priority' and will resolve before any other actions in NAR. Actions with this 'upgraded priority' still follow their own NAR structure, so if one Party member kills the MC and another doctor-protects the MC, the doc shot will still protect from the kill.

This does not extend to factional abilities/kills

. This is the ONLY way the Main Character can die aside from being lynched in LYLO.

-How does someone become the MC?
During the day phase, players vote for a MC. When the day phase ends, whichever player has the most votes for MC will become the new MC during the following Day Phase.
If there is ever a tie (or no votes), the previous MC becomes the new MC.
If there is no previous living MC and no plurality winner in the MC vote, then no one becomes the MC during the following day.
If the voted MC is night-killed before the following day when they would become MC, the previous MC takes their place. If there is no previous MC to take their place, there is no MC for the following day.

-What other bonuses does being MC confer?
During the night that a player is chosen as the MC, they will pick four other players to become their 'Party'.
So long as there is an MC during the following day phase, the MC and the chosen four-player Party will be granted a private topic.
During the day phase that a player is an MC, the MC will decide which Region to visit.
During the night phase following deciding on a region, the MC and his Party may be given rewards based on the Region they visited.

In SaGa Frontier, one of the most exciting parts of combat is executing a 'combo'. Almost every move in the game can combo with another move, with different rates of success. These combo moves do far more damage than the sum of their parts and can't be blocked or deflected! I tried to emulate this in the mechanics of this game. It can be very exciting to finish off a boss while your team is on their last leg because they all combo together!

In SaGa Frontier, each of the main characters have a unique mechanic. In this bump and those to come, I will be discussing them. :3

Red can transform into the hero Alkaizer, which gives him a huge boost to stats and access to some of the best moves in the game. The tradeoff is that he can only do this if no one is watching; so your party needs to be dead, knocked out, blinded, or robots! Fortunately, Red is one of the few characters who can obtain a team of 4 robots (T260G, Engineer Car, Rabbit, and BJ&K) and during every major event/boss you get to be Alkaizer as well.

T260G is a robot! Throughout the game, he is offered different robotic bodies as an alternative to the one he begins with.
These bodies all have special abilities, but the game makes it pretty clear what their differences are. Most of these bodies can be found at Nakajima Robotics in Shrike.

In SaGa Frontier, Asellus is one of the most powerful characters in the game because she gains the bonuses of being both a human and a mystic.

Whenever in combat, Asellus functions as if she were a human, but upon using any of her Mystic abilities, she gains the statistical bonuses of the monsters she's absorbed and has access to their powers. She also has a slight change in how she looks, it's pretty cool. What's notable about this, though, is that if you never use this Mystic power and you make some plot-important decisions, you'll receive a 'human' ending for Asellus, whereas you can also receive a Half-Mystic and Mystic ending for her as well. Each ending reflects how you played Asellus--whether you denied her mystic side or embraced it fully!

This is the sequence of events:
Day X - Players vote for a Main Character.
Night X - This voted Main Character submits 4 players to be his party.

In this way, it would be more difficult for town to keep a scum MC from voting themselves to receive a singular reward.

Continuing with the special aspects of the main characters of SaGa Frontier:
Blue is probably the most powerful character in the entire game due to his unique mechanic! In SaGa Frontier, characters can only achieve the 'Gift' for a type of magic if they completely give up its polar opposite. A spellcaster can't have the 'Gift' for both Light and Shadow magic, for instance.

Blue, after defeating his twin brother, Rouge, gains access to every single school of magic! This makes Blue the only character who can have both Light and Shadow, Rune and Arcane, etc. Another neat aspect of Blue's storyline is that you can actually lose the fight against Rouge and you'll just play as Rouge for the rest of the story. Regardless, the only characters who get the Gift for Time Magic are Blue, Rouge (in Blue's campaign only), and Time Lord--and Time Magic's gift easily makes a character far stronger than any other.

In SaGa Frontier, Riki's special mechanic revolves around the magical rings that he collects as a part of his campaign.
Monsters have 4 accessory slots, which means Riki can hold 4 of these rings at a time--each ring has a powerful once-per-fight magical effect. Normally, Monster characters aren't all that great, but Riki's unique access to these rings makes him a powerful character in his own right.

Too bad Riki has one of the toughest campaigns in the game...

I've noticed some people have been citing flavor from various wiki pages and other sources.
The online info for this game is not very good and sometimes completely inaccurate.
If you've got a flavor question, just ask me.
The flavor isn't game-able anyway. Expect characters who are end-game bosses to be town and protagonists to be scum.
For instance, not all mystics are 'evil', but they definitely are magical vampires. Asellus herself can become 'evil' or 'good'.
Also, I'm pretty sure there's no wiki page for Rastaban or Ciato or even Lion Princess.

I've played SaGa Frontier a whole lot, but even I am unsure what a 'Region' is.
They seem to be planets, or, at least, places in space/time.
They can move and they can die.
You take spacecraft through what seems to be hyperspace in order to travel between them.
There's no traditional 'map'--the Region Map that Blue gets represents regions as 3D art, some of which look like planets but others just seem abstract.
Travel and trade between regions is pretty regular, though, so it's no big deal to go from one region to another.

Adventures can not 'fail', however,
Each REGION can only ever be visited a single time (unless specifically noted by that region--the party will discover this upon adventuring).
Some REGIONS may grant unique rewards to certain characters.
So, for instance, let's say you are Cotton and Cotton has the special ability that if he visits IRPO, he gains 1x Cop shot.
If the Party visits IRPO without Cotton, they'll still get the basic rewards for visiting IRPO, but Cotton won't gain the 1x Cop shot.
Similarly, some REGIONS might have hidden rewards for specific players--so Cotton might not know visiting IRPO uniquely grants him a Cop shot.
Regardless of all of this, a REGION will always grant an award.
If the MC selects a REGION they are ineligible to visit (one that has been visited before, for instance), I will ask them to make a different choice at the end of the day phase but I will not prompt them until then.

The rewards are somewhat arbitrary to the flavor of SaGa Frontier.
For instance; In Asellus' story, when she returns to Shrike, she fights the Fire Sage and learns to use her first 'Mystic' ability--a very important part of her campaign.
In this themed mafia game, an Asellus role might not necessarily gain anything unique for visiting Shrike.
In short, don't overthink it. Every Region has varied enough content in the source material that it's nearly impossible that you'll figure out exactly what REGION might give exactly what reward.

Gen scratched at the stubble growing on his chin, wondering how long it had been since he had a drink. It wasn't too long ago that he had roughed up some of Caballero's goons and since then, he'd been on the lam from region to region, hoping to settle down. It just seemed like every one disappointment lead to another--ever since Trinity wiped Wakatu off the maps, Gen felt like he was quickly spiraling down towards the same fate.

In the back alleys of Koorong, Caballero's gang finally managed to surround him. A skeleton pointed a shaking, bony finger, murmuring, "That's him! That's the guy who used a steel pipe like a sword! The only swordsmen with that skill nowadays are from Wakatu!"

The flare of a cigar lit up a shadowy figure's face. Caballero himself strutted forward, shaking his head. "Doesn't look like a samurai to me."

Gen didn't even assume a stance. He just laughed in the face of death, "How much is Trinity paying you? Can't imagine my head's worth much."

Caballero turned on a heel and tossed his cigar over his shoulder, "It's enough to drag me out to this dump. Whatever--waste him." Gen stood firmly despite the gunfire, his body only collapsing after every single round was spent. As his consciousness faded, his last thoughts lingered wistfully on what would have happened if he never got involved in any of this and just stayed back in that pub in Scrap. He died with a smile, the echo of bullet casings clamoring against the concrete of Koorong's alleyways reminding him of the band that would play late into the nights in that bar. When he finally fell, everyone involved left unnerved, knowing that it could have easily been them lying in the dirt if the swordsman had only fought back.

Gunfire has become more common than the chirping of birds in Koorong these days. No one would miss a vagrant samurai or even question what happened in the underbelly of the region. Those that did quickly found themselves on Trinity's lists and eventually suffered the same fate as Wakatu and it's people. Nowadays, legends of swordsmen capable of defeating any foe were just that--stories and tall tales to entertain children and drunkards. No one would ever set foot in Wakatu again. No one would ever be granted another sword by the Blade God and eventually, everyone would forget such a thing even existed in the first place.

Silence was always looked down upon by other Mystics. Perhaps it was because he had no real power; he was a mute and for many Mystics, words were as powerful as any spell. It may be for this ostracism that Silence turned his back on Chateau Auguille and joined the InterRegional Police Organization. At the very least, it was through IRPO that he could find purpose in detaining the lowlifes and criminals that plagued the various regions. Due to their nature, most Mystics typically strayed from mortal affairs and became increasingly reclusive; Silence found pride in being capable of making actual change in the world.

When he was freed from Omble, Silence took the first opportunity he could to butt heads with Trinity. IRPO had been investigating Cindy Campbell for smuggling weapons and doing black-market business, but there were no definitive leads--except for those that Silence himself had. He stormed the Campbell building, his swordplay and phantasmal magic making quick work of the security. As he reached the top floor, Ms. Campbell fled to the roof. Silence gave pursuit, but what he saw atop that building was more monstrous than anything he was prepared for. Ms. Campbell's body had been grotesquely shifted, her flesh pulled across the frame of a giant spider. She cackled at the policeman, mocking him for coming alone. The Campbell leads died with Silence, cast from the roof of the tower. His body was found mangled from the fall, his natural grace and capacity to change this world forever forfeit.

What was even more startling is that Cindy Cambell's corpse was discovered on the roof--not the monstrosity that Silence saw, but the female guise she normally took on. At first sight, many believed it was Silence who did her in, but the wounds inflicted looked to be from a different weapon altogether. Silence's death would largely go unavenged, as news stations in many regions broadcast the grizzly murder of Cindy Cambell and police everywhere went from investigating her dealings in life to pursuing the mystery of who killed the most influential woman in all of the regions. For those that dug deeper, however, it became increasingly clear that Cindy Campbell's shady business had nothing to do with Trinity and everything to do with an even darker organization spoken of only in whispers--Black X.

Because people have been asking:
If your night action fails for any reason, including being blocked, you will only receive indication of this if your action yields information.
For instance, a Cop who has a failed action will return "You failed to investigate PLAYERNAME."
A Doctor who has a failed action will receive no indication that their action failed.

If you require less votes to lynch, you will be informed of this.
In the case that you may temporarily require less votes to lynch, you will be informed that it is temporary.

Keep in mind that despite me covering both of these, blocking roles and roles that cause players to take less votes to lynch may not exist independent of the TECHNIQUES available to all players.

You should probably bold questions when you ask me, otherwise I may miss them, but:

Blue and Rouge are both mages from the Magic Kingdom who are tasked with mastering all of the magic in the various Realms.
Blue has the specific mission of mastering these magics and killing his brother, Rouge.
Since you don't play as Rouge, it's unclear if Rouge also has the goal of killing Blue, but it can be assumed.
Most other players can recruit Rouge, who is probably the best human character in the game due to his Gift for Realm magic and his great stat growth.
No player can recruit Blue. Red gets the option, but when he explains that his name is Red, Blue kicks him out of his room (because Red is similar to Rouge, get it?). Blue is a bit of a cynical character, who only sees others as valuable tools rather than actual allies. Rouge, on the other hand, seems to lack the aggression and cynicism that Blue has.
When you play Blue's story, you must travel from realm to realm to learn various 'Gifts' for different schools of magic.
Every school of magic has an opposed school of magic and you can never learn the Gift for both. They are;
Realm and Mystic
Shadow and Light
Arcane and Rune
Time and Space
There are other magical schools that exist, such as Mind, Evil, Mirage, and Life, but these do not matter for Blue's quest.
Every time Blue learns the Gift for one type of Magic, Rouge will eventually learn the opposing type. So if you decide to learn Shadow Magic in the game, Rouge will decide to learn Light Magic. Once you have the Gift for Realm, Shadow/Light, Arcane/Rune, and Time/Space, you duel Rouge to the death. Upon winning, Blue absorbs Rouge and is capable of having the Gift for every type of magic. If you lose, you continue play as Rouge.

Rouge does not get Shadow Magic initially. Both Rouge and Blue start with Realm magic and can travel about to obtain the other 'Gifts'.
In SaGa Frontier, you can cast magic from a school if you don't have the Gift, but you need the Gift to learn and cast the more powerful spells.
If you ever get the Gift for one school, you have to give up all magic you have from its opposing school.
Mecs and Monsters can't learn magic, but Mystics and Humans can.

Rabbit is probably the strongest Mec character in the game (besides T260G, of course). Rabbit has unique access to a Bit system, which fires little satellite bit things that float around and shoot his enemies with lasers. His move, SatelliteLinker, is one of the more powerful moves that a Mec can get.
Rabbit only joins Red's storyline, as it turns out that Rabbit is an agent of IRPO searching for the Black X drug factory in Kyo. It's unfortunate that more characters can't recruit Rabbit, because he's very powerful and his SatelliteLinker ability can make quick work of bosses.

A roleblock would not affect Silence's role. Commuting happens before every action in NAR except for role-copying.

Also, yes, Silence's Commute would prevent him from receiving Adventure rewards because he technically is removed from the game and rewards are given at the end of the night phase for players still in the game.

Yes. However, he would not have been able to submit the Strongman Kill and use his roleblock, as those are both activated night actions.
As per the role PM flipped, the factional kill does not count against a player's limit of a singular night action.

If you talk to the fortune tellers in Devin, you can make a special encounter appear in Mu's tomb in Shrike.
So, as it turns out, the nonsense fortunes do actually have some merit!
Saving and reloading outside of this fight is one of the easiest ways to encounter the Mec God, which grants all of the best Mec techniques.
It should also be noted that there was going to be a storyline featuring the heir to one of these fortune-telling houses, but it was scrapped due to being too comedic and different in tone.
A lot of neat things were cut from SaGa Frontier.
Maybe I'll talk about them more in the next flavor bump.

Fuse had been chasing a cold trail of murders for a long time. All of the victims had the same distinction--there was no sign of entry or struggle. It was as if people were letting the killer into their home to end their lives. Nothing of value was ever taken and there were no other indications that a murder took place besides a corpse. While Fuse chalked it up to being some Mystic charming their way into people's lives, no one fit the profile. With the Campbell case landing in his lap, Fuse just didn't have much time for this dead-end string of bizarre murders.

That was, until last week, when his best friend and partner, Ren, showed up dead. Everything pointed at Ren's trophy-fiance, Emelia, as being the killer. While she had no connection to the case in large, she was the singular person who was close enough to Ren to commit the crime. The damn woman wouldn't talk, though, even when Fuse gave her the third degree. It was as if everything was going to hell in a hand basket. Fuse needed a break.

And that break came--Ren's body was found in Baccarat, where it seemed like he was involved in an altercation that killed him for a second time. Fuse puzzled over the details. Ren was dressed awkwardly, like a Joker from a set of playing cards. It wasn't just the outfit that bothered the IRPO detective, either. He kept turning over a key piece of evidence found at the crime scene; a white mask that gave off a magical aura. He grumbled, wishing Silence was still alive to decipher its purpose. As Fuse handled the mask, he felt a strange compulsion to put it on. Shaking those thoughts from his head, he dropped the thing into an evidence locker and never saw it again. The string of murders ending with Ren had come to an end, and while there were no satisfying conclusions to be found, Fuse figured it was probably best left that way.

Of course!
Fuse is a cop working for the IRPO (InterRegional Police Organization) who takes his job very seriously. He is actually a talented gun and sword user, and even has access to Mind Magic! He comes equipped with the Hand Blaster, a gun capable of shooting beams or becoming a sword. Most characters can recruit him by starting the Arcane quest and visiting IRPO to search for the Shield Card.

Fuse helps the party scale a mountain in Mosperiburg to retrieve the Shield Card--Fuse is going along because he is investigating a flower that only blooms at the top of the mountain. A giant firebird, Suzaku, attacks you up there! There's apparently a way to unfreeze Suzaku Jr. and have him join your team (and IRPO, I guess), but I could never get it to work. Anyway!

Fuse appears in several characters' stories. In Red's Story, he helps Red investigate Cindy Campbell and her connection to Black X. In Emelia's story, he's the cop that interrogates her and ultimately detains her in Despair prison at the beginning.
Fuse takes his job seriously, but he's depicted as a pretty gung-ho and cheerful 80's cop kind of guy. He likes to be in control of the situation--he punches Red in the face when Red speaks out of line in the Campbell meeting! So maybe he's a bit of a rough cop, but he loves his work and is dedicated to the police force.

Fuse was originally planned to be one of the main characters of the game, too. His story (apparently) was going to help to bind the other characters' plots a little more as he was investigating these various shadowy organizations (Like Black X, Trinity, Joker, etc.) that have a hand in all the other characters' storylines. In Omble, you can find his shadow in a room with shadows that represent all the other main characters. Furthermore, there are unused sprites and cutscenes in the game's code that indicate he would have been a main character. It's unfortunate that his storyline was scrapped, because he's an interesting dude. I considered making all the flavor of this game tied to Fuse's investigations, sort of like how I made Suikoden U-Pick's flavor all tied to Richmond's investigations. I think it's a good frame narrative, especially given how the game itself was planning on having the character serve a similar purpose.

Sorry if this was lengthy. I love SaGa Frontier. I tend to nerd out when I talk about it.

I've been talking about various aspects of the game that didn't make it to the finished product. The reality is that SaGa Frontier had a ton of ideas (two whole books worth!) but not all of them made it into the final game.
You probably didn't know the game was going to have fully nude women in it!

Originally, the way Asellus was going to escape Facinaturu was by throwing herself into the living fire there. She and White Rose would have had their clothes burned off and even had fully nude sprites in the game code and (tastefully) nude artwork. They would then end up at Virgil's palace in Mosperiburg--he'd give them new clothes and set them on their way. You can still access this scene if you hack the game to be able to go to Mosperiburg early in Asellus' story via the Region Map item.

Otherwise, Asellus' story was meant to feature several other small arcs where she learns about mystics and their powers. They ended up having to scrap all of that and in the final game you just have to run around mindlessly until the elemental Sages attack you. :/

Getting to the Hide Rune can be a bit of a pain. One easy way to circumvent dungeon-crawling is to insult the Ring Lord, Virgil, who will shunt you out of his realm and right to where you find the rune!
The Hide Rune spell can be bought in Devin. It's a spell that causes the target to not be hit by single-target attacks until they attack or are hit by anything else.

There are three other Runes to collect to get the Gift for Rune Magic.
It should probably noted that collecting these Runes in the game SaGa Frontier doesn't give you the respective spell--you have to buy them in Devin.

The Freedom Rune can be found in the prison, Despair. You have to talk to Annie in Koorong and (usually) have another rune before she'll bring you. The Freedom Rune spell makes a target immune to a few of the status effects; Sleep, Palsy, and Stone. Notably, Emelia (along with Annie and Liza) all collect the Freedom Rune at the start of their storyline. The boss that you have to beat to get the Freedom Rune is a tough undead monster.

The Victory Rune can be found in Mu's Tomb in Shrike. You have to navigate the dungeon and defeat a fairly easy boss. The Victory Rune spell buffs a character's attack power.

The Vitality Rune can be found in the monster Tanzer. It'll swallow you if you have collected any other rune and try to depart from Koorong to any other Region. The character Fei-On actually can help guide you through Tanzer--you find him in there. Also, Riki is forced to go to Tanzer as a part of his quest and never can get the Vitality Rune. The spell makes a character regenerate their HP.

All in all, Rune magic kinda sucks. More effort than it's worth; but it's good to start both the Rune and Arcane quests just so you can recruit the characters who only join for those quests (like Liza, Gen, Annie, Emelia, Roufas, etc.)

Once again, don't assume any or all of this flavor has been directly translated into this themed game. Just because a Rune exists in a Region in the source material, visiting that Region in this mafia game might not reward anything tied to the rune. Furthermore, even though you can buy all these spells in Devin, visiting Devin might not reward anything tied to all the Rune and Arcane spells. Even furthermore, don't try to outguess me on how I've translated the flavor into mechanics. I could easily make the Freedom Rune cause a player to be a Strongman just as much as I could make it give them Treestump immunity. Insisting that any flavor must be tied to any mechanic or vice versa will likely be wrong, so please take this into consideration. I love making the flavor very intense, but don't think that it's so easily gamed.

I intentionally threw more than one wrench into the region rewards in order to make flavor knowledge incapable of giving an out-and-out advantage to players.

Please stop trying to game the flavor. ;_;

If you're asking about a hypothetical 'ascetic' role outside of Joker's flipped rule, I am not going to answer.

"In the beginning, there was Nothing. I was Nothing. I had no form or substance and yet I was whole and complete. I was perfect. It was then that the scientists bestowed awareness upon me. It was due to this awareness that I came to realize my perfection, but this lead to the first sensation that I can truly call an emotion. I felt Fear. I was afraid because, in my perfection, I was truly alone.

This birthed a second emotion; Desire. I no longer wanted to be alone. This desire was so intense, it stirred something within me, perhaps it could be called my personality. I became someone. While I was more than Nothing, I also became less than whole. I became imperfect.

This led me to my final emotion; Regret. I had diminished myself. However, as it is with regret, this realization came too late. There was no turning back to the Nothing I once was. No amount of modulation, hardware, or meditation could return me to the perfect being from before.

There are those who insist I have no mind--how can a machine? Just as the ancient philosophers claimed even a rock had a mind, likewise I believe even a robot can have its own mind, dreams, emotions, and fears. As I ruminate on the consciousness and mind I now have, I can only feel regret; I am empty inside. Have all of my pursuits been fruitless? Will I always be this imperfect being, incapable of ever being what I once was or what I once wished to be? Perhaps. Soon, I will return to the ash from whence I was borne. If it was fire that made me, it will be fire that undoes all that I ever was."

Fuse listened to the recording a second time, then a third. It seemed as though some vigilante had infiltrated a hidden factory on Kyo--one that produced the sorts of illegal stimulants and drugs that had been driving crime across the Regions. All that was left of the place was lost in the wildfire with the exception of a Mec that had perished in the flames. IRPO specialists were only able to retrieve a single recorded message from his databanks, the rest of which were fried beyond recovery.

The black robot's desire to be someone and subsequent regret sunk into Fuse's stomach like a tight knot. Living with only regret to fuel one's purpose was not a life suited for even a machine. Was consciousness really so terrible? Fuse shook his head and let those questions remain unanswered and forgotten in the back of his mind. This case had to be tied to something bigger. There was some missing link between the murder of Silence, Cindy Campbell's downfall and schemes, and this robot that perished in the inferno on Kyo. Whatever it was, everything hinted at something much larger and more sinister than anything Fuse had gone up against before...

Anyone who spent enough time adventuring would eventually cross Rouge's path, but the meeting was always a pleasant one. While most travelers from the Magic Kingdom are strange folk, they typically keep to themselves and turn their nose up at foreigners. Rouge wasn't like that. He was always quick to strike up a friendly conversation with those who met him. He often offered his magical services to strangers. It was no secret that Rouge was a talented magician, travelling the Realms to master magic. Everyone he met on this journey spoke volumes of how friendly the man was.

One day, Rouge disappeared. While he had no family, frequent travelers and friends noticed immediately. They would ask at the ports if Rouge was around and even the terminal assistants would sigh sadly and shake their heads. This absence was short lived, but when he returned, Rouge was not the man he used to be. While he retained a good deal of his warmth, it was as if something essential to him had been lost. He declined any offers to travel, even for the sake of magic, as if he had given it up. His passion had left him, and while he was still likely to be seen wandering the realms, any purpose he had was now lost. It was as if he had given up on reaching outwards to his dreams and was forever lamenting his past, shadowing the same corridors that he wandered in his more vibrant years, as if searching for the man he once was.

There is now a new public Mechanic in the game: Trading

If a player has an item that may be traded, they may trade that item as a day action to another player.
In order to trade, you must write the following tags;

Trade:

ITEM NAME

To:

PLAYER NAME

In Return:

PAYMENT FOR THE TRADE

If the terms of a trade are agreeable, the receiving player may bold the words "I accept the trade."
If the terms of a trade are not agreeable, the receiving player may bold the words "I decline the trade."

Every trade may include payment but it does not need to.
Payment may include other trade-able items and/or Post Restrictions.
The Post Restrictions offered by trades must only deal with public info.
ANY restriction is allowed so long as it does not hinder achieving both scum and town wincons and does not break the rules of the game.
In the case that a player must perform the restricted action in order to achieve either a town or a scum wincon, it will be made public info that their restriction no longer applies.
If any player breaks the established post restriction, their offending action will count as a failure and/or their offending post will be deleted.
It should be noted that items can be traded infinite times.
That said, please don't try to break the game with your post restrictions. I won't allow any restriction that seeks to break the game for either alignment.

If a player has an item that may be traded and that player is killed or lynched, the item will transfer to a whatever player killed or lynched them.
Once again, do not try to game this towards an advantage. Asking every single player to offer a trade in order to prove who killed a player at night will result in none of the trades being honored and an absolute waste of time. Like with any day action, I will always ask the player for confirmation of the action, which means any scum-who-killed-to-receive-an-item can simply decline the action.

As with the other public mechanics, trading works independent of all other game mechanics. For instance, if a player can not be targeted by any action, they may still be eligible to trade items.

It's no big secret that SaGa Frontier is an unbalanced game with some 'broken' exploits and glitches in it.
But did you know that SaGa Frontier is SO broken that it even breaks other games? Apparently, you can completely skip parts of Final Fantasy 7 by swapping out the disc for SaGa Frontier, allowing you to keep Aeris on your party even after the point in the game where she leaves!

There's been some discussion about this, so I figured I would weigh in with Mod-Meta to establish an equal playing ground:
In the case of player-controlled external votes (such as those cast by Bright in Suikoden U-Pick), I always allow the player controlling the vote to dictate when the vote will be cast. There can even be triggers, such as "When a player reaches L-1, I want my external vote to hammer that player." So long as I can reasonably be online at the time when the player wants their external vote cast, it can happen anytime or even be made to look like it belongs to any player.

Do not assume that the BIT and FIRE votes both function in the same way the BRIGHT vote did in Suikoden U-Pick--this post should not serve as confirmation towards or against that. The intention of this post is simply to establish that you can't 'game' a player's activity in order to figure out if they control an external vote, and attempting to do so is foolish (and against the spirit of the game).

Before you ask, Joker's third party killing ability counted as a FACTIONAL killing ability. If Joker were to gain a sword technique such as LIFE SPRINKLER, the technique would not count as a factional killing ability.

Keep in mind that Treestumping is, for all purposes, a killing action. If a player has immunity to being killed, this counts as immunity to being treestumped under normal circumstances. It should be noted that DODGE SEDUCTION specifically makes a player immune to being treestumped.

While it is not explicitly stated in either the Site Rules or the General Rules for this game, quoting private communication is typically forbidden.
You may paraphrase hydra or PT communication. I have, in the past, even allowed quote boxes so long as they did not link back to the private topic.
I will be adding an addendum to my general rules to outline that quoting Hydra/PT chat (or even fabricating a post that looks like it is quoting hydra/PT chat) is against the rules.

Let this serve as a warning. There are some cases where I feel it is acceptable (I give scum far more leeway to quote private chats in their own scum PT, for instance), but it should never end up in the public game thread.

The localization team was really nerdy. I'm not entirely sure how much that the English localization differs from the original Japanese, but there are a lot of nerdy references. For instance, the strongest armor in the game is called the Spriggan Suit, named after the powerful suit worn in the anime, Spriggan.

I suppose I'll do a small series of game exploits/glitches in SaGa Frontier.
You can get infinite money in Koorong. All you need to do is travel to Nelson, buy at least 12 Gold Ingots, then go to Koorong to sell them.
Every time you attempt to sell a Gold Ingot in Koorong, the price for the next Ingot sold will be lower. However, this doesn't dip into the negatives, so if you click the down button enough in the preview screen, you'll be 'selling' ingots at 0 gold. The exploit comes in when you click the up button to take back the ingots you've previewed as sold. Every Ingot you take back will increase the price of ingots, starting with the first, so you can take them all back and then sell at profits!

Actually, this only apparently matters if you use the abilities tied to your Mystic Boots.

Time Magic's Gift allows learning Overdrive, a powerful move that lets the caster take multiple turns in a row at the expense of all of his mana.
Rune Magic's Gift allows learning Stasis Rune, a practically worthless spell that traps both the caster and their target in stasis for several turns where neither can be affected by anything but also can't take any actions.
Using Stasis Rune while in Overdrive produces an amusing effect; when the caster comes out of stasis, they will receive multiple turns every time it is their turn!

This trick can only be done by Time Lord and Blue, however, as no other character gains access to the gift for Time Magic.

Having some trouble early on in SaGa Frontier? Need better equipment?
Go to Scrap. There's a junk shop there that is run by two lizards. The way it works is that you pay money to go take three items from various junk boxes. You could get a useful item or... a repair kit, broken bumper, or junk.
However, if you pay the money, take the items, then tell the lizards you are selling them a Hyperion Bazooka (even if you don't have one!), they'll let you take seven more items. You can keep 'selling' Hyperion Bazookas to keep taking free items!
But catch this--if you actually sell them some of those repair kits you've been accumulating, the quality of all the items you can receive will increase.

This is not just a great way to get good starting gear, but also a fantastic way to get money, since most of these items can be sold at other locations.

Go to Devin and start BOTH the Rune and Arcane quests. So long as you haven't collected any single Arcane Tarot or Rune, you can recruit any character that normally only joins on one quest or the other!

This last one isn't really a glitch or exploit, but if you've already gotten the gift for one type of magic (or if you're Riki or T260G), you can have all your other party members receive the opposing gift for free by simply visiting the correct location.
This only works with Light, Shadow, and Mind magic, though.

There seems to be some confusion in how Voting works in this game.
If you ever do anything with your vote, all of your votes follow.
For instance, if Drixx had DOUBLE SLASH, he would have double-voted Skybird when using the tag.
If this was the case, then when Drixx unvoted, both of his votes on Skybird were removed.

If a player uses REACTION SHOT and votes for someone 4 times,
then they vote for any other player,
their four votes will be removed and only their singular vote will end up on another player.

If a player uses DOUBLE SLASH to double-vote a single player,
then they cast a singular vote on another player,
their two votes are removed and their singular vote is on the newly voted player.

I thought I had made it clear that all day-use abilities needed to be used with a bolded tag.
I understand the wording of 'Double Slash' is awkward and I understand your confusion.
I will change the description of DOUBLE SLASH to more accurately describe how it works.
Sensei had already used DOUBLE SLASH; it should have been clear from their use how it functions.
I will not retroactively say that you used DOUBLE SLASH when you did not.
I do realize that this is largely against me. The description of the power should be clearer and it is my fault for outing your TECHNIQUE.

At this point, I will hold that there was no hammer--not just because there was not one made, but also because doing so would unfairly out the fact Zulfy has access to all FIST Techniques.

Treestumping is simply a modifier on a kill. If any killing ability would function in one way, so would a treestumping ability.
So, yes, a bodyguard would be treestumped in the target's place.

Dream Super Combo is probably the strongest single technique in the game of SaGa Frontier.
In order to have access to the move, you must first have Sliding, Suplex, Babel Crumble, and Giant Swing. If all four of these fist-fighting moves are on a character, they may use Dream Super Combo, which can hit up to five times, dealing massive damage.
Unfortunately, Dream Super Combo cannot combo with other techniques, so it still might be out-damaged by a well-placed Tower spell.

The music and clamor of the pub on Scrap felt distant, like a white noise to the conversation at hand. At his table were three of the most dangerous humans Lute had ever met; Detective Fuse of the IRPO, Captain Hamilton of the Victoria Pirates, and Roufas--the leader of the terrorist group, Gradius.

Roufas snuffed out his cigar and pushed his shades up his nose. "I agree. I'll see what I can do, but I can't make any promises. Thanks for the drinks, Lute." With that, he excused himself from the table.

Captain Hamilton idly dipped a cold piece of chicken about on her plate, collecting some sauce. She dropped it and shook her head. "It's out of my hands. I need to return to my ship; we're set to cruise to Nelson. Come on out to Owmi sometime, Lute. I'll treat you to the lobster there. My treat, given you're picking up my tab here."

"But I'm not--" Lute was cut off by Fuse, who butted in, "Sounds like everyone just assumes you'll be paying for their drinks, yeah? That's what you get for being friends with a bunch'a hooligans like those two." Lute silently wondered if he even had money in his account to pay for everyone else, as he sipped at his water. Any hope in his face drained as Fuse answered a call on his IRPO radio. Fuse exchanged some hushed words and looked back to Lute, "Gotta make an arrest. I'll let you know if there's a break in the case, Lute!"

"B-but! The tab..." Lute sighed. He looked to the doors and wondered if he'd be able to catch the ship to Nelson before anyone came collecting their credits. His eyes darted around the bar--Gen was the usual guy who'd pick up his tabs, but he was nowhere to be found. Mei Ling usually hung around here, too, but she also seemed to be out. As the waiter rounded the corner, Lute rolled up his sleeves and prepared himself for whatever amount of fighting or work he'd have to do to get out of this one. A smirk cracked over his expression; at least every day was an adventure.

As the Region Shuttle I-O874 rattled to life and started to hover away from Scrap, Fuse mulled over the details of the call he had received. Something was amiss in Shrike and contact had been lost with the investigating officer in the Region. Fuse idly calibrated the energy cell on his hand blaster. IRPO had always figured something nefarious was going on at the BioResearch Lab on Shrike, but there was never a good enough cause to warrant a search and seizure.

The call itself didn’t sit right with Fuse. The agent in Shrike was more than capable of responding to the issue, yet it he was compromised despite being one of the best in the field. He kept rolling the details around in his head as he silently watched the crew of the small shuttle go about their business. He found it banal how the same four crew members would load cargo from one bay to another, moving sluggishly, as if time wasn’t an issue for them. Their jobs seemed so simple, so much so there wasn’t a sense of urgency. As he watched them, he began to notice that they were, in their own way, watching him as well. That’s when Fuse realized that the crew’s job had nothing to do with the ship and everything to do with the IRPO officer himself.

It all made sense—they were just trying to look busy while making sure Fuse didn’t realize what was really going on. The nervous pit in his stomach wasn’t just about the call from before but it was his gut reaction to this hostile environment. Fuse rushed to the front cabin only to find there were no pilots at all. As he turned around, the skin sloughed from the various deck-hands to reveal monstrous bodies beneath their human skin.

No one knows exactly what happened to Region Shuttle I-O874. Some say that it was swallowed by the inter-Regional beast, Tanzer. Others say it malfunctioned and exploded during its flight. Still others pray that it simply disembarked to an uncharted Region. No matter what the fate of the ship was, the truth was that Fuse was never heard from again.

Because more than one player has asked me about it;

The words 'A killing ability' in the description for ROSARIO IMPALE refer to any TECHNIQUE, Factional Ability, or role-unique ability that allows a player to kill another player. This includes TECHNIQUES such as HEAVEN/HELL, ROSARIO IMPALE, and BOUND SHOT. In regards to flipped roles, ROSARIO IMPALE would not kill Rouge before Rouge gained access to MEGAWINDBLAST, but it would kill him at any point after he did. Red and Gen would always be killed by ROSARIO IMPALE, because even though they had not met the pre-requisites to gain access to their kills, it was still an ability on their Role PM.

Bulletproof and other similar modifiers will still protect a player from ROSARIO IMPALE. Think of it like a Double Vote that becomes a Day-Vig if the player targeted has access to a killing ability.

If there are any other public mechanics or TECHNIQUES that you are are confused about, feel free to ask me in the game thread.

It was not my intent to implicate any players for asking for clarity about my (understandably) vague TECHNIQUE descriptions.
There have been multiple inquiries about how ROSARIO IMPALE functioned since before the game started, even.
Cheetory6, who helped me build the setup, was unsure of its exact interactions, and other players have consistently asked since Day 1.
I feel that, in the face of the confusion over DOUBLE SLASH that happened on Day 3, it is important to share all public rules questions in-thread.
Being confused about how a PUBLIC MECHANIC works should not imply anything about a player in this game aside from a lack of understanding how I've written up that mechanic.

Babel Crumble doubles the effective voting power of any singular vote cast on a player.
This includes the BIT vote and the FIRE votes and other 'named' votes, should they exist.
If a player used Double Slash, the two votes would effectively be four votes.
This does not double the effectiveness of any 'hated' mechanics.
I can not list any potential 'hated' modifiers in the VC, as they would be private.
If there is ever a public modifier, such as when a player is affected by Babel Crumble, I will denote it at the bottom of each VC.

There were those who didn't take Fuse's death sitting down. Many IRPO agents put off coffee and donuts and started working double shifts. Some agents, though, never slacked off in the first place. For Doll, the enigmatic punk lady of IRPO, bringing Fuse's killer to justice was an absolute must. She'd thought that Joker was the one killing IRPO agents before--Joker's MO certainly aligned with Ren's death--but now, she wasn't so sure, and her intuition along with an anonymous tip had lead her to the jungles of Shingrow.

She'd been to the ruins out here before. In fact, she spearheaded an investigation into Trinity stealing technology from these ancient sites. She even used the various monsters as sparring practice from time to time. Seeing as she was here on business, she left a decimated trail of fiends from her entry point all the way to the reported hideout of a shady gang. The evidence from the Kyo case matched up with what was going on here--Black X was involved.

No one knows for sure what happened in that jungle. The facts are that Doll brought in Berva's mangled body and definitive proof that he was a general of Black X. The rumors paint a story of Doll executing the fabled Dream Super Combo on him, shattering his defenses, and dropping him from orbit in a suplex. No one really knows for sure, but everyone does agree that she must of kicked his all across Shingrow for what had happened to Ren and Fuse.

What was apparent was that crime had slowed down heavily in the region, and across several others. It was as if all of civilization had breathed a collective sigh of relief. IRPO didn't catch such a break, though, because they knew the truth. There were still others out there, tied up in all of this, pulling the strings and working towards some sort of goal that would compromise all of the regions. There was still a darkness brewing on the horizon, and IRPO wasn't going to take it sitting down.

Amidst the Regions, tragedy was not confined solely to the realms which IRPO had an eye on. No one knew what was brewing in the Magic Kingdom--not even its premier Mage, Blue. As ventured the Regions, seeking out magic, he had heard rumor of a disaster in his homeland, and quickly returned despite official orders not to come back until he had defeated his brother, Rouge, in a legendary duel. However, Rouge had given up his conquest of Magic and Blue found himself aimless. Perhaps returning during a time of crisis would allow him some guidance in his destiny.

What Blue found was no guidance, only cruel fate. Demons had broken a seal in the Magic Kingdom and were pouring forth into the Region. The local mages were slaughtered before Blue arrived--when he finally found a living straggler, a man who taught Blue some of his earliest spells, even this mage was gravely wounded. The mage coughed and sputtered blood, hope glimmering in his eyes when he asked if Blue had come back a master magician. Upon hearing the news that Blue did not, in fact, master all magic and defeat Rouge, the mage's expression turned grave. He sighed deeply, "We are all doomed," and then promptly died in his student's arms.

As the story goes, Blue was joined by a legendary martial artist who was passing through the area. Where Blue's spells faltered, the fighter's fists prevailed. Where a suplex wasn't enough to slay a demon, Blue's magic finished it off. The pair of adventurers were last seen fighting the demons back into the seal and deep underground, but were never seen again. The Magic Kingdom has repaired the seal, and while the rumors say that Blue and the martial artist, Liza, are still fighting demons to protect our world, the Magic Kingdom denies their involvement in the matter altogether.
