Good vs Evil, Chaos vs Law


This is an experimental set up, with two towns with two separate win conditions.



In a world of dungeons and dragons, or ghouls and goblins, of knights and scoundrels there is little room for grey.

Do you stand for Good? Do you strive for others, sacrificing your wants for others needs?
Or do you stand for Evil? Do you take what you can get from this world, staring darkness in the face?

And how do you live within this world?

Do you stand for Law? Do you believe in rules and structure, of oaths and honor?
Or do you stand for Chaos? Do you shirk the restrictions that others erect and run toward your own ends?

Good cannot abide Evil. Just as Law cannot abide Chaos.

A small village sits, as they sometimes do, in a realm of magic and steel. Most are simple Commoners going about their farming and crafting in between bandit raids and necromantic plagues. Some among them, however, are experienced adventures with skills or spells.
Most inhabitants are Good, but hidden amongst them are small sects of Evil. Among both of these groups are those that believe in Law and those that believe in Chaos.
Each inhabitant can accept that his or her neighbour may not agree with them about everything, but can no longer live with those that are their direct opposite. After a particularly violent bar brawl, leaving poor Cecil the Druid dead in the street, the villagers have had enough. One way or the other, this will be over soon.

The Rules


> Fundamental
1) The site-wide rules apply, please read them and don't do anything stupid.
2) Unless it is explicitly stated in your role PM that you can do so, do not talk about this game outside of the game thread. Rant Buddies are cool, as long as they don't provide feedback. The mod's inbox is always here if you're feeling frustrated too!
3) Don’t quote any private communication. This includes with the mod, masons, neighbours, between hydras. Doing so will result in a modkill. Always paraphrase.
4) Play nice. Step over the line of what I feel is acceptable and I will warn/force replace you.
5) No Sig/Avatar bets, this is actually covered by rule 1 but people seem to forget it’s a site wide rule.

> Voting, Lynching & Death
6) For your vote to be counted, it must be bold, and in the form Vote: Equinox or VOTE: Equinox. Caps and colons are optional, but it does need to be bolded. Any other derivation will NOT be counted (i.e. hammer: Mina would not be counted)
7) Unvotes aren't necessary, but will be appreciated.
8) A lynch will occur when a player achieves 50% +1 of the votes. When this has happened, any subsequent votes and unvotes will not be counted, and the game will enter twilight. Night will begin as soon as I have declared the lynch.
9) You may vote for a ‘no lynch’ if desired. If a majority of the players in the game vote for a no lynch, the game will progress to night without a lynch.
10) Once you're dead, you are dead. Do not post in the thread until the game is over, not even a 'bah' post. There'll be a graveyard to complain in/tell us how awesome you are/complain to me.


> Activity & Deadlines
12) Treat this game as a commitment, and try your best to stay active.
13) Prods will be issued after 48 hours in a row without posting. If I keep having to prod you I'll get angry and replace you. Players may request a prod on another player too, I'm human I may forget so if you want someone prodded just tell me.
14) If you do not make a post within 24 hours of being prodded I will begin the search for a replacement. If you post before I find one you get to keep your spot though.
15) Things come up in life, if you need time off for something, please let myself and the players know in-thread for V/LA purposes. I will be flexible, but if you can't be here for a significant amount of time I will replace you.
16) Deadlines for each game day will be 2 weeks.
17) In the event of a deadline ending without a player gaining a majority of votes, there will no lynch.
18) Nights will have a 48 hour deadline. If you fail to send in a night choice, I will automatically default to 'no choice' for that night, and you will do nothing.
19) Deadlines will only be extended if I need a number of replacements, or barring some other freak circumstances. Apart from that laziness, or anything else, will not result in a deadline extension.


> Other Information
20) No mechanism or website may be used to prove that a decision was achieved randomly. I.e. you may chose who claims first by rolling a dice, but you'll have to trust the person who rolled the dice not to lie. This means no dice tags in my game.
21) RED and Mech font are my colours I will use for modly purposes. Try not to use them, oh also no hard to read colours.
22) I will try to post Vote Counts as often as possible. You can request them, but it probably won’t be necessary, expect one every few pages at worst.
23) It's more than possible I've missed a rule or haven't completely covered something. Don't be a prick and try to exploit it, or I will punish you. If something is fuzzy for you, please ask!
24) I reserve the right to add more, or modify existing rules at any time. If this happens, I will let everyone know in thread.
25) Flavour is just flavour. Flavour is also spelled with a u. Silly Americans.
26) There is no rule eleven. Mostly because I numbered this wrong and going back to edit it takes :effort:
27) Have fun!

> Game Specific Mechanics
28) When a faction achieves its win condition, all members of that faction 'win' and then leave the game. Any surviving direct opponents also leave the game. The game then continues until the remaining two factions conclude their conflict.
29) Classes are restricted to the Alignment possibilities detailed in the 3.5 Dungeons and Dragons players handbook. Only classes from that book will be present, with the addition of Commoners.

Barbarian - Must not be Lawful
Bard - Must not be Lawful
Cleric - May be of any alignment (Although technically must be within one alignment step of their deity, but ignore that here)
Commoner - May be of any alignment
Druid - Must contain one element of Neutral
Fighter - May be of any alignment
Paladin - Must be Lawful Good
Ranger - May be of any alignment
Rogue - May be of any alignment
Sorcerer - May be of any alignment
Wizard - May be of any alignment

Day 1


The villagers emerge from their homes, early morning smoke beginning to puff from their chimneys and the smell of burnt oats and bacon filling the air. Nobody has slept well and nobody has broken fast well. The death of Cecil the druid last night has been weighing on all minds. Today marks the beginning of a cleansing, of a purification that will disinfect the stain in the village.

What that stain is precisely differs from villager to villager. Some wish to destroy all that is reckless and selfish. Others wish to remove those which use the rules and traditions of the town to hurt others. And a few wish to remove those who strive to do what is moral and right, be they lawless ruffians or goody-goody-two-shoes.

Today is the beginning, but when will it end?

Also, I'm going to slightly increase the length of Day 1 by 24 hours. This is partially because of the replacements and partially because I'll be at a funeral at that time.

So if you run up a lynch in that time period, you will possibly be getting a long twilight, although I'll have my phone with me and will lock the thread if I see it. There, everybody is informed.

The villagers enter the village square as the sun rises. Most had a fitful night's sleep and some barely touched their beds at all. There is a shout of dismay and parents struggle to shield their children's eyes. MaguaofIllusion has been found in the village square, throat slit and body deliberately left for all to see.
It is clear now that MaguaofIllusion was a good and law abiding man, even if he did have regular conversations with himself.
This death reinforces what everybody already knew, the threat still exists and today would once again be ugly.

Day2

Another dawn brings another day, and the townspeople trundle out of their homes and into the square, happy to be alive but fearful of what might have happened during the night.

And they are right be fearful.
Lord Mhork's body was quickly found in the townsquare, his throat slit. He, like MaguaofIllusion before him was clearly a noble and just man.
But worse than this was the body that was found in an alleyway shortly after. Greenknight was found strangled to death by his own holy symbol, a golden scales.
His own holy symbol.
Greenknight was a cleric of all that was lawful and good, and now he has gone to his master.

Shadoweh's body still swings from the gallows, but one evil body is a little victory in the face of all this death.

Okay, I've noted some cryptography has been used. Before this devolves into bad play, I'm going to rule on it.

Using cryptography is acceptable.

What is not acceptable, and will result in either forced replacement or modkill depending on the effect, is referring players to an external website to decode it. This includes names of sites and search key words. If I'm not being clear enough, please ask me to clarify.

As the large clock in the town square ticked by, the same arguments came out again and again. The townsfolk grew tired and frustrated, each convinced of their own wisdom and of the foolishness of their neighbours. The sun was already sinking beneath the horizon when a man shouted out. "By the power of this magic ring, I have sensed the evil in CooLDoG! It is a taint on this town and it must be ended!"
The repetition of arguments ceased immediately, some tongues halting in mid shout. Hands roughly grabbed at the accused and dragged him towards the gallows. Within seconds a rope was twisted around his neck and he was thrown off the ledge, followed by a loud snap. Yet his mouth still moved. "I'll see you all in hell! Let your milk curdle and your sons become florists!" And with that his body burst into flame. It was clear to all that he was a servant of
Chaotic Evil

Day 4

The sun rises again over the sleepy hamlet. Last night, screams were heard from the darkness, but the townspeople merely pushed further furniture against the doors and windows and tried to sleep.

As they leave their homes, red eyes evidence of their lack of success, they find two more bodies. One body is lying, bloody and broken, in the town square. It is Regfan. He may have strayed from the path now and then, but he was a good man, and now he is dead.
Soon after, Mastermind of Sin is found in an alley way, strangled to death. He is dressed in dark leathers and a set of lock picks were found in his pocket. He clearly was a servant of chaos and evil.

Maybe there is hope after all.

The townspeople, buoyed by their recent success and luck, engaged in rigorous conversation. It was not long before Feysal stepped forward. "I am a Wizard of the noble tower or Arkus, and I think I would know if there was another good and true wizard in this town. I declare BBmolla for a liar!"
It didn't take much more than this, the town had already come close to stringing him up yesterday.
BBmolla was grabbed and thrown towards the gallows. He was left up there for a while, as conversation continued below. Until someone finally pushed him off the edge "I hope you know Feather Fall".

He didn't.

Day 5

The townspeople went to their beds, allowing themselves to be hopeful for the first time in days. And most rested in untroubled sleep.

But some did not. And as the sun rose, and the townspeople gathered in the square, they began to fear again, in earnest.

Two bodies were found on either side of the square. Shadow1psc was found near the gallows, hung up and strangled by his own bowstring. At the other end of the square was the body of PeregrineV, the hilt of his holy holy blade clutched in his dead hands, blood staining his body from the slit in his throat down. A ranger and a paladin dead... if they couldn't stand against the evil, who could?

The towns people were quick today. Confident in their recent successes and eager to head back to their homes and work of barricading the doors and windows it was not long before somebody was grabbed and forced towards the gallows. "What? You've got to be kidding me! You can't think I'm evil! I'm not! I help old ladies carry their food back from the square on...." His pleas were cut short as he was pushing off the edge of the platform, hemp around his neck.
Snap.
And the crowd saw immediately that they were wrong. TiphaineDeath, despite his ominous sounding name, was not just a good man, but a
Lawful Good
one.

Even with the sun still high in the sky, the people silently crept back to their homes. Dreading the night.

Night falls on a weekend, so I'll give four days or so for everybody to get their actions in.

Day 6

The day dawned and the town square was silent. A keen observer might have noticed a small cloud of smoke coming from an occasional chimney, but elsewise, nothing stirred.
It was some hours later that blinds and curtains tentatively slid open, and nervous eyes peered out.

One by one the people moved into the square. And their numbers were fewer still. Two more lay dead. The first found was Mina, her body broken and discarded. The second was Oversoul, stabbed to death by his own sword shaped holy symbol.

The townspeople looked over the bodies silently, with eyes red with exhaustion, sadness and fear.

The early hours of the day were sharp with both accusation and confession... and perhaps that shock stunned the crowd into silence. For hours upon hours there was little but murmers as townspeople thought aloud to themselves and few others. The offer of an admitted killer to help catch other killers... to what ends? Redemption? Distraction? But it was not an offer many could turn down.
As the day wore on, mastin2 was accused. He was dragged to the gallows and without waiting for final words, he was thrown from the wood.

The snapping of his neck was loud. And the echo seemed to resound in a strange way. As if everything that was dark and beastial had been scared away by a gunshot. mastin2 was clearly the last of the
Chaotic Evil
.

The
Lawful Good
members of the town immediately gave praise. They were saved! Together they blessed those who remained behind and went to the temple to pray long into the night.

The others retreated to their beds... tomorrow would probably go well, but one among them would pay the price.

Epilogue


The sun came up, and those villagers who had not gone to the temple crept from their homes. And one of their number was missing.

Chesskid3 was found dead in his home. A small vial in his hand and a look of bliss on his face. A small sniff of the vial confirmed suspicions. Honeygloom, a euphoria inducing toxin. He had chosen to end his own life rather than swing.

The villagers celebrated and were soon joined by their companions from the church.

They would not all see eye to eye, but at least they could live free from evil


Game over.

Lawful Good wins.
Chaotic Good wins.

I'll post some thoughts when I get a chance, as well as all the PMs.

Briefly, I think this was a fair success, and balanced about right.

Curious to hear your thoughts, I will certainly be running another two town at some other stage, and others are welcome to steal what they wish from the set up.

chesskid, you lost because you left a cop alive since he claimed Day 1.

The 'too many' PRs were balanced in a few ways, one of which was two scum kills per lynch.

So, there were two cops. the bard and the paladin.

But they're only half cops, each of them will get some false positives on their own objective. The paladin can out himself and reveal an evil player, but what if that player is lawful evil? He's outted himself and hasn't helped his team. Similarly for the bard but just a bit more obviously not a pure cop.
The clerics protected from death, but they also protected from other abilities, meaning they interfered with investigations.
The wizard classcop isn't quite the same as a rolecop, since you didn't necessarily know what the role did, so it's closer to a flavour cop.
The tracker was pure, but again, could have outted themselves hunting the wrong scum.

When it became clear there were two NKs each night, compared to only one lynch, a lot of town players said this was scum sided, and it looked to be heading that way. I was toying with the idea of including a NG Vig that wins if both good teams win and loses and leaves the game if one evil team wins. Now i'm not so sure.

I don't think scum played great games. Not always terrible, but not great. If chesskid hadn't ... well, been chesskid, then I think mastin was in with a chance. he'd have probably killed Feysal and then tried for a push on Nacho. Tammy would have been the decider there. Could have gone either way maybe.

The replacements were an absolute nightmare. Lots of new people on my blacklist. But thanks to everybody who stuck it out through that, and all the replacements that came in and stuck it through.

Faraday is going to bully me into aDwD Mafia, but then i'll get onto a sequel of this game.

I'm curious as to how people feel this game worked as a dynamic. Was it really that different from a single town game? Or not really worth the point of difference?

Yeah, I should have put it in the PMs. I didn't think it was a big deal because I had expected all three of each team to post in the QT and discuss tactics. But I'll do so in the future.

I don't think it's quite so bad as that. I've seen games where, despite being given the other scum, a player forgets it during Day 1. Your argument is a slippery slope, should scum players be forced to look at their PM and clarify their buddies before each post?
