THE DEATH OF REAPER CHARLIE

It's the dawn before opening night of the first production of the season at La Scallop opera house. Production had been going smoothly, until now. Dawn revealed an unimaginable occurrence: the death of Reaper Charlie. Reaper Charlie was the company's most sought after star; controversy always piled around her, but that only made the shows sell out faster. Some critics said her voice was a rival to Callas, and some said she'd be better off in a trashy Vaudeville show and that her popularity was only sensationalism. But no matter what opera lovers thought of Reaper Charlie, they knew who she was, and she sold tickets.

It was all over the papers: DIVA DEAD!

The whole company was at a loss. Who would kill Reaper Charlie, on whom all of their jobs depended? Reaper Charlie might annoy most of the company, but sabotaging her was sabotaging the whole company's reputation. Everyone's first thought led to Reaper Charlie's bitterly jealous understudy, Empking, but when she was summoned, to everyone's dismay, it was found that Empking was dead as well.

As the age-old addage says,"the show must go on," but how could La Scallop continue with their two divas both deader than doorknobs? With Empking's death, it was obvious that it wasn't Reaper Charlie who was targetted, but La Scallop as a whole. Even though their reputations would be damaged with each day of delay, La Scallop decided to delay opening night until the killers were found.

Who would do such a thing, they all wondered?

The race to solve the mystery is on.

La Scallop was still in a flurry - though they were continuing rehearsals, desperately searching through the Opera Chorus for a diva capable of filling ReaperCharlie's shoes, no one's mind was truly on the production.

One question was burning in their minds, slipping off their tongues, and causing missed dance steps and off-key notes.

"Who killed ReaperCharlie?"

This question changed everything and the whole company was viewing their peers in new lights (though the actual stage lights needed to be replaced, if the grumbling was to be believed).

Everyone was looking particularly hard at the Opera Chorus. They stood the most to gain from the deaths of ReaperCharlie and Empking. One or more of them may get serious promotions due to this - a chance to be on the foreground of the stage, for once.

One chorus member's ambition began to stand out. The rumor grew that he would do anything for the spotlight. Were his behind the scenes machinations to blame for all of this?

La Scallop fired AlmasterGM in the vain hope of keeping the distractions to a minimum, though the police had cleared his alibi.

The show must go on.

As day dawned on La Scallop Opera House, they were preparing for a dress rehearsal of the show with a new diva, open to loyal patrons as a show of confidence. SensFan had been found dead in his dressing room, shot through the chest, but the show must go on. Some of the company's knees started shaking again, and one of the props crew started crying when PBuG's body was found. The others had all been shot, but PBuG was found slumped over a toilet, clutching his stomach. Still... They had persevered this long and they weren't about to give up.

The show must go on.

As the curtain rose on their new diva, this mantra was the only thing that kept them going. They had hired a perfectly normal woman to be the lead in this opera, but she had somehow become a blue alien. The manager was about to call the show off, but then she opened her mouth, and everyone paused to listen...

Just as the aria was finishing, a shot rang out from the balcony. The alien fell to the stage, dead.

The panicked stage manager dropped the curtain, in hopes that the audience would believe it was an elaborately staged hoax.

The company was more determined than ever to find the culprits of these murders.

Some members of the opera company worked so well together that they were almost always cast in paired roles. Their harmonies were effortless and their comedic timing impeccable. Their dressing rooms were next to each other, all in a row, and they had the habit of spending a lot of time together outside of rehearsal. They each thought they would know if one of the others was up to no good - but truthfully, one of them was. He knew the others well enough to trick them, or so he thought. But he couldn't hide his nefarious intentions well enough. First other members of La Scallop and then his closest friends began to turn on him.

"La Scallop needs a new direction," he shouted as he was dragged off the premises. "We're resting on our laurels, making money off of an imposter instead of striving for true art. Someone has to make the change!"

The company of La Scallop rose to meet a new day of rehearsal. Luckily, they had managed to pass off the alien bit as a very cool bit of special effects, but the patrons were now extra interested and the company still had no one to sing the lead role. So it was back to the drawing board, with investors clamoring for something to show for their money.

The stage director thought the company would be revitalized that they'd caught one of the bad guys, but it wasn't so. It was hard to believe that someone as talented as Bowser could do such a thing, and the paranoia that even your closest friend could be one of the ones doing this was starting to take its toll.

The frenzy wasn't lessened by the discovery of two new bodies.

One lay on the front step outside the opera house. It was Meransiel, a very rich patron who demanded to be allowed access to La Scallop as if he were part of the company. It annoyed most, but he contributed so much money that it had to be tolerated - and everyone had been feeling especially grateful to Meransiel lately for his loyalty. Even throughout the controversy, he had stuck with La Scallop and had been particularly gung ho in the search for the killers; several times, he had been spotted following around some members of the company, trying to catch someone in the act. Perhaps Meransiel had been

too

gung ho. His loyalty had gotten him shot.

Shaky though they were, the company was even more on edge after the discovery of the second body. Petroleumjelly, a chorus member, had been found in the bathroom, just like PBuG.

Bowser had been telling the truth; he wasn't alone. What was left of the company had to find his partners, and fast.

The amount of people found dead curled over the bathrooms really had people beginning to get paranoid. Who would poison people? How could they?

When some of the chorus began bagging lunches instead of eating the complementary food, attention turned to the catering.

Each dish was gone through, but it seemed that everything was fine.

But soon, it was unearthed that both PBuG and petroleumjelly ate outside of the usual fare. They had both ordered late night snacks recently.

killerjester, the overnight catering staff, tried to shift blame elsewhere.

"They'd already been feeling ill!" he protested. "They asked for something to calm their stomachs!"

Everyone had had enough, though, and they weren't willing to listen to excuses.

killerjester was fired immediately.

After rooting out the poisoner, La Scallop greeted the day with a new vigor. Some fostered hope that the killings were over.

The spreading excitement was severed quickly when another chorus member was discovered. Shanba, though only a part-timer, had been talented.

Still, though, the bathrooms were clear. No bodies there. One dead was better than two or three.

They were making progress - or so they thought until the crew raised the curtain on the stage for the beginning of rehearsal.

Laying upstage in a pool of his own blood was a small child. Everyone recognized him as mastin2. He was one of the children used as angels and such in productions; everyone knew there was no way he could have done anything wrong, being so young.

Seeing him there, mouth open and leaking blood, never again to sing, gutted his peers.

In memory, the company watched a recording of mastin2's last performance. Most were moved to tears.

These bastards had gone too far this time. They would pay.

La Scallop was the scene of a lot of commotion on the fourth day after ReaperCharlie's death.

Though everyone's focus had been on the performers, killerjester's death (a caterer!) showed the company the possible error of their ways.

The costume master had a habit of calling everyone down for fittings and adjustments at the worst possible times - right when they were about to go on , or even worse, in the middle of the night! He even summoned patrons for tours that sometimes coincided with important fittings.

No one liked it, but when you had a good head of wardrobe, you put up with his eccentricities. MrBuddyLee might call you to adjust a button at half past midnight, but he got the costumes done and he got them done on time. They were always impeccable and La Scallop was well known for its sartorial splendor.

But in this stressful time, no one had the patience for midnight fittings. Yet, MrBuddyLee seemed to increase them tenfold, and always insisted. The company finally began to take note, asking themselves WHY it was so important that they be measured for bonnets at 3 am and no other time. When too many bonnet fittings coincided with too many deaths, that was the last straw.

La Scallop did not give second chances at a time like this. Renowned or not, MrBuddyLee was fired immediately.

Incensed, MrBuddyLee came up from the basement dressed in his favorite costume, the Queen of the Night. Why, no one could say, but they were too afraid to ask.

"You think you're doing the company any good, defending the wastrels, the fakers, the scourge of opera?" he howled, breaking his usual routine of near silence. "We're doing this for your own good. Your own good."

As a last parting shot, he spat, "It's better that this company dies than be anything but excellent. It's time that you start asking yourself where your loyalty lies - with art, or with popularity. Choose carefully, or you'll be next."

On that ominous note, the door slammed behind him.

David Xanatos had always been an interesting character, even in a company full of interesting characters.

He was a props master and he did his job meticulously, so meticulously that no one even thought to question the fact that he kept the guns. The opera house kept many guns of all types, both real and fake, and David was in charge of them all.

But then, the usually quiet props master challenged the head of wardrobe, saying he found a gun in the costume workshop - one of his, that had been missing.

All of a sudden, the people that usually lived their lives behind the scenes were center stage, the focus of the evolving drama.

The company eventually decided to trust David, and it had made a good choice - but unfortunately, this had also made David a target for someone.

"Who would kill David?" everyone wondered. No one could have thought he really framed MrBuddyLee, could they?

They had been hoping MrBuddyLee was Bowser's only conspirator, but now it was all up in the air again. It could even have been someone still suspicios of David's easy access to the guns.

David was found in his props room, one of his own guns having prepared him to become La Scallop's newest prop.

Though La Scallop had been distracted for awhile by hunting for evildoers in unexpected places, like the wardrobe room, they finally turned their attention back to where it had been first: the opera chorus. Nobody else stood as much to gain from killing ReaperCharlie and Empking as those chorus members who longed for the spotlight.

One chorus member, Hydra, who was a well-known novelty for having two heads, was garnering more attention than usual. Enough ruckus was being caused that La Scallop decided they better tell him to find new employment, just in case. He had until the end of the day to pack up his things and go.

So it was Hydra's last rehearsal and he was being surprisingly calm - or so everyone thought, until he whipped out one of the suspiciously missing guns right in the middle of a scene.

"You're going to fire

me

?" he raged. "All these years and never a solo bit, after allowing that charlatan ReaperCharlie free reign, and

then

you fire me? You were sitting on a gold mine - A GOLD MINE."

By this time, Hydra was shaking with unspent emotion, and was caught off guard when someone wrestled the gun out of his hands.

As he was dragged out, he laughed bitterly.

"Have fun finding anyone else that can sing harmony with himself!"

La Scallop's company entered the studio with new fervor on the dawn of Day 6. Finally, they were confident that no more dead bodies would befoul their stage. They could finally pursue art in peace.

When a bunch of musicians get into high spirits, there is no stopping the song. There was dancing, laughter, and most of all, singing. But a key presence was missing.

Bowser, DemonHybrid, and one other had been the best trio in all of La Scallop. Their harmonies were impeccable. Though Bowser had been found out to be part of the conspiracy, DemonHybrid and his cohort were still holding down the fort with their delightful duos.

The celebration would not be complete without them, it was decided, and so they were sought. Their dressing rooms, always purposefully adjacent, were empty, but just a little ways down the hall, someone DemonHybrid's body.

DemonHybrid was surrounded by a pool of blood. In his hands, he clutched a portrait. Never would he sing those perfect harmonies again, except in the beyond, wherever that was.

After spending several days in freezing uncertainty, La Scallop finally reached a decision. Even though no more dead bodies had turned up, Bowser, Hydra, and MrBuddyLee's final words were still on everyone's minds. If there were no one else, who had killed DemonHybrid? The company was so pre-occupied with this that they could not continue rehearsal properly, even if the mysterious last member of the resistance had stopped killing. Still, he must be found.

CrashTextDummie, a member of the opera chorus, had professed a keen interest in rooting out this last member of the resistance. He even boasted that the reason the killings had stopped was because the resistance was scared of him. And indeed, he had been instrumental in the discovery of killerjester's treachery.

But something about him just wasn't right... ToastyToast, with the memory of DemonHybrid so fresh, wanted vengeance. He remembered the way CrashTextDummie had sometimes looked at DemonHybrid - with jealousy, maybe even contempt. Who else would kill poor DemonHybrid?

When a consensus was reached, La Scallop fired CrashTextDummie. Unlike his partners in crime, he did not make a big fuss. He simply nodded and said, "You will regret this. By killing our dream, you have killed art."

He had been left with a large burden, and he had failed. As it turns out, carrying the duty of art on your shoulders is pretty hard.

He left La Scallop with dignity in the face of defeat. Only when he was out of sight did he lose composure. He had lost the battle for art. How could he ever forgive himself?

Meanwhile, at La Scallop, much rejoicing was had. Finally, they could continue their production! Despite their smaller number, the show must go on. And it would. For La Scallop, too, had been fighting for art. In their hearts, they had won.

I want to thank each and every one of my non-flake players for making my first modded game here at MS a success. It was a long haul.

There were some good plays and some bad, but I think the single best play of the game was CrashTextDummie's. If you read the scum qt, you will see that his bold move of counterclaiming doc was not at all dumb luck. It was a strategic play and the best play in that position, in my opinion. He pegged a lot of people's roles and is the reason there was so much rolecop speculation going around (among other things).

I would love to hear your thoughts on this game, if I haven't heard them already.

Was I a good mod? Is there anything I could have or should have done different to improve your enjoyment of the game?

Was this a fun set up? Was it balanced?

After seeing it play out, I think it is a little bit swingy. I chose each role for a reason, but in the end I think I tried to put too many ideas into one game. Still, I don't think it was unbalanced, per se, just a bit too swingy. It came down to 4 player LyLo, so that's a good sign, at least.

Oh, and a note on the neighbors: I actually tried to get several different neighborhoods passed through, but only this one passed normal review. Had I had the neighborhood I wanted to start with, I think the game would have been different, for better or for worse.

The game felt a little unbalanced in favor of town, and definitely swingy, but it still ended up being a lot of fun. Parama ended up costing us the game by getting lynched--his lynch cleared two townie neighbors. And there weren't enough vanillas left to throw suspicion upon--despite the fact that scum didn't kill a single vanilla. (1 lynched, 2 vigged, 2 killed by SK.) 5 power roles and 2 confirmed-town neighbors was too much to overcome.

We could have used a rolecop...

Yos, Iece and Toasty pulled it out in the end with some reasonable logic/argument. CTD played a valiant endgame, and might have won if he hadn't defended all scum to the death like the best teammate EVER! Much love to my teammates for a game well-played.

In the end, that was how this played out: too many named roles. HOWEVER, one of my hopes for this game really did come true. I wanted scum to realize how many roles there were and think, "How do we combat this?" One of the BEST ways is to fakeclaim a role intelligently, which is what happened.

I wanted town to be skeptical and doubt some of the claims (which is also what happened).

HOWEVER, in hindsight, I would have given scum a rolecop and put in an extra VT or two, and probably take out the innocent child. Rolecop would have been a good aid to scum in this situation.

I also didn't think people would take one-scum-in-the-neighborhood for granted so heavily. Of course, I never wanted to PUT one scum in the neighborhood, but that's how it worked out anyway.

Some of my thoughts on the roles:

There was a lot of town power, but they were meant to foil each other, in certain ways. For example, there were lots of red herrings for the tracker (and indeed, the tracker accidentally outed the vig). The gunsmith had a miller in the vig as well. Some of the power roles could be interrupted by the alien (jailkeeper variant).

I knew that there would be claims going on, so to give scum a way to combat this, I gave them daytalk.

I think, perhaps, in light of this, I should have not put an SK in. The balance was precarious and much of the swing lay in the SK. The way the SK decided to play could change things. If I were to run a similar set up again, I would not put an SK in. SKs are fun, but not quite right for this particular set up.
